About the Logitech® Harmony® 650

Ralph Graves

A truly simple remote

Maybe you've got your home theater system figured out and know which remotes control what — but chances are your other family members, houseguests, and babysitters don't. The Logitech Harmony 650 keeps things intuitively simple, so everyone in the household can operate the audio/video system.

A truly simple remote

Maybe you've got your home theater system figured out and know which remotes control what — but chances are your other family members, houseguests, and babysitters don't. The Logitech Harmony 650 keeps things intuitively simple, so everyone in the household can operate the audio/video system.

All the great Harmony remotes we've seen over the years are based on one simple, powerful idea: you tell the remote exactly which brand and model your components are, and then it will know exactly how to make your system do what you want it to do.

One-touch commands

Operate your system by tapping a single activity button. Touch the “Watch TV” icon, for example, and the Harmony 650 automatically assesses the status of your TV, receiver, and cable or satellite box to make sure they're all turned on with the proper settings. Your system's ready for TV viewing.

Logitech Harmony 650

Smart color screen

The Harmony 650's eye-catching color screen can display channel icons, letting you quickly jump to your favorite news, sports, or movie channel. It also displays quick commandsrelated to your chosen activity, for convenient access to commonly used functions. Plus, it provides on-screen help when you need it with just the touch of a button.

Easy setup

You can control up to eight devices with the Harmony 650 remote. The system works with over 5,000 brands and 225,000 entertainment devices, including lighting controls, game consoles, multi-room systems, and more.

To get started, just download the free MyHarmony software to your Mac or PC. Then connect the Harmony 650 to it via the provided USB cable. MyHarmony will help you program your remote by asking some simple questions about your system and how you use it. It then downloads the commands and command sequences to your Harmony 650. And you can use MyHarmony to update your remote whenever you upgrade your system with new gear.

Product Research

Features

Universal Remote Control: The Harmony 650 is a universal IR remote control which combines up to 8 remotes into 1 simple controller. Control your TV, cable or satellite box, DVR, Blu-ray player, sound system, and more from this one remote control.

Desktop Software Setup: The Harmony 650 is programmed by connecting the universal remote to your laptop or desktop computer using the supplied USB cable, and downloading the MyHarmony desktop software. The MyHarmony desktop software will guide you through entering the manufacturer and model numbers of your home devices so the Harmony 650 understands how to control them. It then helps you create your Watch TV Activity (or scene) for one-button control.

Note: The Harmony database has over 270,000 electronic devices from more than 6,000 manufacturers.

System Requirements: In order to use the MyHarmony desktop software your computer will need to meet the following system requirements:

  • Windows-based PC:
    • Microsoft Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista
    • USB type-A port
    • Internet access
  • Intel-based Mac Computer:
    • Macintosh OS X 10.6 or later
    • USB type-A port
    • Internet access

Infrared (IR): The Harmony 650 controls your devices using infrared (IR) light meaning that there must be a direct line of sight between the Harmony remote and your component's IR eye or external IR receiver. The remote has an IR transmission range of up to 50'.

Color LCD: The Harmony 650 features a 1.5" LCD with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels and 65,000 colors. See just what you need, like icons for your favorite channels and the commands you need for the devices you're using.

Intuitive Design: Buttons are grouped by how you use them, shaped so you can feel your way around and backlit so you can navigate your home entertainment anywhere, even in the dark.

One-Touch Activity Control: The Harmony Touch uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your entertainment system. For example, you can use one of the Activity buttons to power on your TV, DVD player, A/V receiver, set all your inputs and even activate play without having to program time consuming macros. Once all of your equipment is "on", the buttons on the remote are also automatically configured for the appropriate operation. There are 3 activity buttons - Watch TV, Watch a Movie, & Listen to Music. You can also power off all your devices with one button press.

Note: To help keep the Harmony 650 in sync with your devices, avoid turning your television, set top box, and other devices on and off manually or by using their original remote control.

Favorite Channels: The Harmony 650 allows you to program your favorite TV, satellite, and cable stations (up to 23) into the remote's memory for easier access through its LCD screen a backlit buttons. You can even store and view station icons.

Button Customization: The Harmony 650 allows you to customize what each of the physical buttons on the remote does, and each of these customizations are unique for every Activity. For example; you may want the Channel Up button to change channels on your set top box when watching TV, but have the Channel Up button tune to different stations with Listening to Radio using your stereo.

More Controls: With the Harmony 650 universal remote control you can easily access guides, menus, and recorded programs; as well as control playback, with dedicated buttons.

Help Button: A designated help button walks you through solutions when problems arise.

Teach Function: If there's a command on your original remote that doesn't appear on the Harmony 650 remote, or doesn't work properly, you can use your original remote to teach the command to the Harmony remote.

Battery Powered: The Harmony 650 universal remote control is powered by two "AA" batteries (included).

Q
I have a Harmony 650 remote that is a little over a year old. Recently the "8", "9", and "0" keys do not work. All the other keys work fine. I have changed the batteries but that did not help. Any suggestions? Other than this issue the remote has been working great. Thanks in advance for any input.

Q
When I use my Harmony 650 to initially turn on my system (LG OLED 65B6P, Onkyo TX-RZ810 and DirecTV DVR), my UHD Blu-ray player also comes on and displays its menu on the TV, after the TV initially shows the DirecTV satellite program. I must then use my Onkyo remote to change it from the Blu-ray player back to the CBL/Sat setting. The Blu-ray player turns off and I am OK to watch the DirecTV feed. This sequence of events did not occur with I initially programmed the Harmony 650. It only started a few weeks afterwards. I have no idea as to why. Suggestions?

I would clear remote and re-program it. Also unplug all devices for a few minutes, plug back in to sort of "reboot" devices. You probably already did that. Or contact Harmony. C.T.S.

Sorry. Returned this item.

I have almost the same occurance with my Denon and have to reprogram it every couple months. Right now even reprogramming requires me to use the denon remote to switch to the Cbl/Sat setting

I just entered that model number and it did show that TV available for the remote but since I don't have the TV I can't confirm that it controls everything but in my experience everything it shows available works.

you can control Apple TV, option is available during setup of the remote. Original or iPhone/iPad is needed during ATV setup, afterwards you can use the Harmony. Some reprogramming of the Harmonys buttons may be needed but is easy through the software.

Will this work with Comcast basic cable box (non HD)?
nicolas  Jun 07, 2017

A
Suggest you go to Logitech's website and see if the Harmony 650 supports the use of your Comcast cable box.
richard  Jun 11, 2017
A
I don't know it works great with direct tv HD should not make a difference it's the cable box
timothy  Jun 09, 2017
A
My guess is the box is probably manufactured by Cisco or Motorola. Look for the make and model, then go to the Logitech site to see. They list by the mix mfg, not cable provider. Even if not, I have a Harmon-Kardon receiver not supported, and there is a manual method. Difficult, but it works.

Q
How long is the battery life?
seth  Apr 11, 2017
10 answers
A
Battery's usually last about 6 months.
robert  Apr 13, 2017
A
Obviously it depends on the amount of usage, since the screen is activated during usage and draws from the battery. I used mine pretty much 6 evenings per week for almost a year before the batteries needed replacing. While everyone's experience will likely differ somewhat, I would say that battery replacement intervals are not an issue with this device. I use standard name-brand alkaline batteries, not the super expensive lithium batteries.
gerald w  Apr 12, 2017
A
The batteries in mine tend to last at least 3-4 months.
chad  Apr 12, 2017

i have had problems using the 650 and can't give you an accurate answer. My guess has been about 8 months
john  Apr 12, 2017

In the two years that I have had the Harmony unit I changed batteries one time.
john  Apr 12, 2017
A
It is good. Not exactly sure how long they last but I never thought it was an issue.
brad  Apr 12, 2017
A
Months at a time.
jason  Apr 12, 2017
A
Battery life is obviously directly affected by the amount of usage. My normal viewing times are weekends and weeknights and the batteries last roughly a month or more.
timothy  Apr 12, 2017
A
Depends on use. If you constantly channel surf battery life is only month or so. If you rarely surf you can expect batteries to last five or six months.Every time you push a button on the remote battery power is used.
hugh  Apr 12, 2017
A
Not long, that is for sure. Plus, it is difficult to observe when the battery is low...is just slows down and finally the only thing to do is change batteries. I buy them by large packages. There does not seem to be a good alternative but I would certainly purchase another product if it would perform as well and not require continuous battery changes.

Q
Can my Harmony 650 use rechargeable battery's? My fresh everyready battery's only last a few hours. I had to change them 2 times.
charles  Jul 23, 2016
4 answers
A
My experience is that new fresh name-brand alkaline batteries last many months, close to a year, based on almost nightly usage. However, I never watch daytime TV. If you are using this throughout the day and evening, I could imagine batteries lasting only a few months. But a few hours?.... something is wrong with that scenario.
gerald w  Apr 12, 2017
A
i dont believe it can use rechargeable batteries. But something is wrong if your batteries only last a few hours. They last for months in my Logitech 650.
drake  Jul 24, 2016
A
Rechargeable battery's will work but regular cheap battery's should last for Months so something is wrong with the remote. get a replacement.
john  Jul 23, 2016
A
Yes. Any good quality rechargable AA battery should work
richard  Jul 23, 2016

terry  Jul 05, 2016

Yes as long as the turntable has a working infrared remote. You can teach the 650 any commands but it won't help you if remote is broken or lost.

I would think so. The remote is set up on your computer with the Logitech app most devices for all major brands are listed
eugene h  Dec 03, 2015
A
Yes, it will work with any smart TV. One negative thing about this remote, is that it goes through batteries very fast.
mark  Dec 03, 2015
A
we did not use it for an lg tv but I will say it is an extremely fragile remote. If you have children or a tendency to leave it on the sofa and a little fall from that height dislodges prices inside and making the remote useless. It was a great remote when it worked but only lasted outside of the crutch field warranty by a few days before ours stopped working.
andrew  Dec 03, 2015
A
It should. It works with my Samsung Smart TV....I see no reason why it wouldn't work with LG

I have not tried this, but if you do an online search for "Harmony upgrades and combinations" you will find a Harmony Support page that states "Harmony Home Hub is not currently compatible as an upgrade to existing Harmony remotes." In addition, there is a compatibility table entry on that page for the 650 which states "No" across the entries for various updates.

robert d  Nov 21, 2014

Hi Jeff B, I am pretty sure this remote does not work with PS3 functions. Logitech used to have a PS3 adapter, but they have discontinued it. You may still be able to get it through Crutchfield or Amazon. Hope this helps. Good luck! Ali

A
Do not own a PS3, sorry
barry  Nov 21, 2014
A
No experience with PS3, but works surprisingly well with Apple TV and every function of my cable set-top box with DVR, significantly better than my other remotes. Very refined and smooth funtioning product, wish I had bought one years earlier. Cheers!
michael  Nov 21, 2014
A
According to logitech, it is not directly compatible with the PS3, but they say it will work if you purchase a PS3 adapter which is sold separately. I would suggest you contact Logitech product support directly for more information.
arthur  Nov 21, 2014
A
I do not have a PS3 to confirm this for you. The remote works great with all of the equipment I have. Sorry I could not answer your question.
lindsay  Nov 21, 2014
A
You need to purchase the adaptor for PS3. It's a separate tiny receiver that converts the remotes signals into Bluetooth that the play station can read. Crutchfield carries this as well. I bought one and it seems to work flawlessly with the PS3. I use it to watch movies mostly. It's once not having to grab the PS3 remote and make sure it's charged etc.
samuel r  Nov 21, 2014
A
I don't have a PS3, but it is my understanding that it is a bluetooth only device. Since this controller is IR only, it will not control the PS3. I noticed that there is a Harmony Playstation 3 adapter (Item #: 596PS3ADPT) that looks like it will enable the 650 to work with the PS3. Another option would be the Logitech Harmony Smart Control. The writeup says it will control the PS3.
stephen  Nov 21, 2014
A
No this does not support Bluetooth.
