Our take on the Logitech® Harmony® Smart Control

by Ralph Graves
Logitech

Own a smartphone? Then you know how convenient it is. The Harmony Smart Control system makes it even more so by turning your smartphone into a powerful remote that can control up to eight different home theater components. The system gives you everything you need — a free downloadable app for your smartphone, a wireless hub to forward commands from your phone to your gear, and a spare remote for others to use.

Harmony Logitech Smart Control app screenshot

Control up to eight devices by tapping a single activities button (iPhone® not included).

Intuitive control through the Harmony App

Harmony's free app is available to both iPhone® and Android™ smartphone users. Swipe your phone's touchscreen to change from one component's control panel to the next. You can also group commands together under one-touch activity icons, such as "Watch TV," or "Play a Game." When you select an activity, such as "Watch Movie" for example, the app automatically turns on your TV, receiver, and Blu-ray player — whatever combination is required to make it work in your system.

You can also program up to 50 TV channels with a logo. Want to watch ESPN? Just touch the ESPN icon and let the Smart Control do the rest.

Control devices behind closed doors

The Harmony Hub is the key to this versatile system. It connects to your home Wi-Fi® network and converts signals from your smartphone into infrared (IR) signals your components can understand. This handy low-profile hub comes with an infrared flasher so you can control components stored behind closed cabinet doors.

Game consoles are covered, too. The hub uses Bluetooth® to communicate with your PS3® and Wii® consoles and uses IR for controlling your Xbox 360®. That eliminates the need for extra remotes, and frees up USB connections on your consoles.

All this and a backup remote, too

The Smart Control system comes with a simple remote to control the basic functions of your components. Rather than borrowing your smartphone, friends or family members can use this remote to adjust volume, change the channel, or select an activity button.

Logitech Harmony Remote Hub

The Harmony Hub (left) relays your smarphone's commands to your system. Use the included remote (right) when your smartphone's not available.

Easy Internet setup

Simple, guided setup has always been a big part of Harmony's success. The app walks you through the setup process step-by-step. Just by answering a few simple questions about your system, you can have your smartphone app fully programmed within minutes. And if you already own a Harmony remote, you can use your current device and activity settings for even faster setup.

Features

Harmony Smart Control: The Logitech Harmony Smart Control lets you control your home theater components from your Apple iOS or Android device, via a downloadable remote app. Using the Harmony Smart Control, the "myharmony" website, the free Harmony App, and your Apple iOS/Android device, you can consolidate eight remotes into one simple mobile remote application. The Harmony Smart Control comes with an WiFi/RF Hub, IR blaster, AC adapter, USB cable, and a basic RF remote control.

MyHarmony.com Setup: http://myharmony.com is the website where you configure the Harmony Smart Control. You are able to enter your device information, create activities, and choose your favorites. With this information, myharmony.com will configure the Harmony Smart Control to control your entertainment system. During setup you will be prompted to enter your network password in order to connect the Smart Control Hub to your wireless home network, so you can use the free Harmony App on your Apple iOS or Android device. You can return to myharmony.com any time to update your configuration, although many settings can also be maintained directly from the Harmon App on your apple iOS/Android device. The myharmony.com website has a database of over 225,000 electronic devices from over 5,000 manufacturers. Your computer environment will need to meet the following system requirements:

  • Windows-based PC:
    • Microsoft Windows 8 (32/64-bit), 7 (32/64-bit), Vista (32-bit) or XP (32-bit)
    • 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz); WEP 64/128, WPA Personal, or WPA2-AES)
    • Internet access (Internet Explorer 8+, Chrome 16+, Firefox 11+)
  • Intel-based Mac Computer:
    • Macintosh OS X 10.4.8 or later
    • 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz); WEP 64/128, WPA Personal, or WPA2-AES)
    • Internet access (Firefox 11+, Safari 4+)

Harmony Remote App: Download the Harmony App from the Apple App Store or Google Play and turn your Apple iOS (5.0+) or Android (2.3.3+) device into a personal universal remote, when your Apple iOS or Android device is paired with the Harmony Smart Control Hub. Your Apple iOS/Android device will transmit WiFi commands to the Smart Control's Hub, which then turns these same commands into IR and Bluetooth for control of your IR audio/video components and Bluetooth game console. This app gives you control of your entertainment devices; including TV, DVR, Cable box, Receiver, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, and more. You also get 50 favorite channel icons and one-touch activity control.

Control Hub w/ IR Blaster: The included Hub turns network commands from your Apple iOS/Android device and remote app into IR and Bluetooth commands your home theater devices and game consoles can understand. The Hub send these same commands to the included IR blaster which can be placed beside a hidden IR component or directly to a Bluetooth game console. You'll be able to control your IR audio/video component and Bluetooth game console (like PS3/Wii/Xbox 360), even if they are in an enclosed cabinet or behind a wall.

Remote Commands: The Harmony Smart Control offers a variety of unique remote commands from your Apple iOS or Android device with the Harmony App installed.

  • Activities: The Harmony App uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your entertainment system. You can use the Activity buttons to power on your TV, DVD player, A/V receiver, set all your inputs and even activate play without having to program time consuming macros. Once all of your equipment is "On", the buttons on the app are also automatically configured for the appropriate operation.
  • Gestures: When an Activity is running, swiping up from the bottom of the touchscreen on your Apple iOS/Android device will display the gesture screen. Here, simple taps and swipes will perform functions related to the current Activity such as changing the volume, skipping forward or backward, pausing and playing, etc. Tap the button at the top of the screen to see what gestures are available for each Activity.
  • Favorites: Favorites are your favorite TV channels. Using the myharmony.com website you can select up to 50 favorite channels to display on the remote app. Selecting a favorite channel will start your "Watch TV" activity, if it's not already started, and tune directly to that channel. Using the touchscreen of your Apple iOS/Android device, you can add, remove and reorder your favorite channels right on the remote.
  • System Off: One push of the off button turns off all the equipment in your system.
  • Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the remote app.

Simple RF Remote: When your Apple iOS or Android device is not available, use the included RF remote control to communicate with the Smart Control Hub and operate your AV equipment. It lets you change the channel and adjust the volume, as well as switch to favorite activities; like Watch TV or Play A Game. The remote uses a non-rechargeable 3-volt battery (CR2032), which is replaceable.

Great Remote

Written By Anonymous, Houston, TX on Wednesday, July 16, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great simple solution for replacing multiple remotes. The supplied "basic" remote is perfect for my wife and kids; however, using the iPad/iPhone app you can control the full functionality of all components (including a PS3 and AppleTV).
Cons:
I have a multi-zone receiver and you must add a "device" for each zone; however, the app only allows for 8 devices.

Wow, Best remote compare it to anything up to $500.00 plus

Written By Scott, Chagrin Falls, Ohio on Sunday, July 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned e few older harmony all in one remotes in the past that I paid well over $300.00 dollars for. I am know switching each room to this remote. The other units have a difficult setup, this one tales seconds. The ipad and iphone apps are incredible. The remote on its on is what we use the most of and does everything you need for any unit. You can not beat this for $99.00.
Pros:
Super Easy Programming Great use with ipad or iphone, just like the $500.00 plus digital models Remote is phenomenal on its own.
Cons:
Not one I have come across.

Big improvement over my old Harmony

Written By FiloD, SSF, CA on Saturday, July 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is an improvement over my old Harmony 620 and I love the IR. Apps is ok but I prefer using the remote. I find it too much time to open your apps just to control the TV. Not a con but a suggestion - there should be a default to future Harmony where you can turn off all that will act as reset if something is not working properly. Right now I think you should use the app for this
Pros:
IR is an improvement App is ok, but I end up usually using the remote Nice looking
Cons:
One could easily forget what is programmed in the second function of a button An issue for other members of the family who did not set up the remote Once they keep on using it then the wife stops asking :)

Love it!

Written By Cosmo Dog, New York, NY on Saturday, June 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My old Logitech Harmony finally died and I decided to upgrade to replace it with this Harmony Smart Control. This one represents a huge improvement over my old Harmony remote which used IR signals. Because the old remote needed to fire off a sequence of IR commands to turn equipment on and off, I needed to keep the remote aimed at my equipment. Initiate something like "watch TV", and if you moved the old remote, everything would get out of sync - very frustrating. Nevertheless, the idea of a universal remote with macro commands still had me sold on the old Harmony remote. Now, this new Smart Control fixes all that. The remote talks to the IR receiver and the receiver broacasts the IR signals. Since the receiver stays put, I no longer need to keep the remote aimed at my stack for several seconds whenever I'm turning equipment on and off. Excellent!!!!
Pros:
Don't need to aim the remote at the equipment stack. Also, very responsive!
Cons:
I use a Belkin power strip with a remote to power off my equipment when not in use to conserve energy. Too bad Logitech doesn't support the Belkin power strip.

Harmony Smart Remote

Written By Janet G, Brooklyn, NY on Thursday, June 12, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this remote! I had another Harmony remote but that one got a little glitchy. I bought this one as recommended by a friend and I am happy I did. It was super easy to program and has been working beautifully. And I called Crutchfield about a question I had (I love the free tech support) and they were very helpful. Buy this remote!!!

New approach to Universal Remotes that works

Written By NormP, The Woodlands, TX on Sunday, May 18, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Previous Universal Remotes (URs) that I have used work by sending multiple signals (IR or other) from the remote to control multiple pieces of equipment . You know, if you have used these, what can happen - - some of the commands work and some don't. You then have to deal with out of sync components, and tiresome remote processes (Is your TV on?, Is your Receiver on? Is you DVD player on? Is you receiver set to the DVD?, and so on). Harmony, with their former models had solved the set up problem by using a computer connection and the internet configure the remote - - this was great, but these URs still had the hit or miss control problem. This new remote seems to solve this, at least for me. With it, the main control unit sits in the cabinet with your equipment, logged in to your wireless network. The handheld piece is also connected to the wireless network, and when you push a button, the command is sent over the network to the main unit, which then sends out the signals (IR, or Bluetooth, or whatever) to the equipment . You can plug in up to 2 remote transmitters (one is included), to control equipment in a different location, like the TV. Once you get the main unit and the remote transmitter positioned properly, the commands you send over the wireless network operate very reliably. A couple of other great new features: You can also control things using an app on your smart phone or tablet (Apple and Android are supported), AND you can use the app to set up the remote.
Pros:
Works very reliably once set up and positioned properly. Can be controlled by any number of smart phones / Tablets
Cons:
Needs a robust wireless network environment , an a familiarity with how these work . Some trial and error is needed to get the equipment positioned (a one time effort)

Perfect for multi-room, including garage & pool

Written By Oregonian stuck in Indiana, Marion, IN on Wednesday, April 16, 2014

A late review on a fantastic Xmas gift. WHAT an absolute GEM!!! Our home (we are 3rd owners) was wired for LR, garage and pool speakers (with a manual Monster speaker selector--SIGH), and I've been waiting for a product that lets me select and change the music from wherever I am working (garage) or lazing away (poolside). This is it, as long as you have a decent wifi setup. I have this paired with my iPad mini and iPhone 5c--works perfectly. The app hasn't plagued me with glitches, but it can take 5-10 seconds to find/pair with the wifi module some distance away...in my basement. But it always finds it, and once paired it stays so. My other rooms are powered via a 20+ years Pioneer, which was there on the device list. Amazing. Ditto with my 20+ years Pioneer 6-CD changer, my latest DirecTV HD box, and my 3-year-old Panny plasma and BD player. The biggest hassle with the set-up was finding the model numbers on each unit! Once found, I wrote them down and first created the device list, then my music profiles. Takes some time, but the on-screen process was easy. Now, when I'm in my shop I can listen to SportsCenter (audio only), satellite music (DirecTV stations), old CDs, and even radio. Poolside, too. The app lets me pick my sources by profile or (what I usually do) by the specific component. The Logi remote is quicker than app, but I usu like to see a display. Do yourself a favor and buy this! It does everything I wanted. No idea why others have wifi issues
Pros:
easy set-up, extremely flexible, always have remote (phone or tablet) with me, can control from anywhere in house or back yard
Cons:
pairing with wifi slower than line of sight IR remote

Works great except for the IR mini blaster

Written By Anonymous, Dallas, TX on Friday, February 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product based on some good reviews from friends I know who bought this. I have new home theater set up with all the devices in a closet, wanted an all in one remote that I can operate when watching movies and not bother about which direction I point my remote..the installation and set up was all good and breezy until I had to deal with the min IR blaster..I just couldn't get it to work, I needed it to work to operate my overhead projector BENQ W1070..which was couple of feet away. I figured I was trying too hard to make it work..the repeated on-off cycles that I was doing was going to burn up my costly AVR eventually. For overall set up , installation, and basic functionality I would give a 5 star rating but the mini blaster killed it for me...and I think this product is was over priced as well.. I had to return the product within 2 days...thanks to Crutchfield.com, the customer support was excellent and courteous and understood my problem as well..a 5 star rating for them. Got all the money refunded within 3-4 days.
Pros:
Basic functionality works Easy set up and installation Logitech support guys tried to be helpful
Cons:
IR mini blaster does not work at all Product over priced

Logitech® Harmony® Smart Control

Written By Cass, Melbourne Beach, FL on Wednesday, February 05, 2014

For the first time a remote that allows easy station identification for selection. Installed the unit in an inclosed glass door cabinet and had very little difficulty positioning the Blaster and hub for proper operation. Just follow the instructions suggestions for easy installation. I am using both iPhone and iPad Air for control and both provide excellent performance.
Pros:
Excellent performance in all respects.
Cons:
May require a little time to adjust the position of the blaster and hub for an inclosed multilevel equipment cabinet.

So far so good

Written By DennisB, Louisville, KY on Wednesday, January 22, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far things have gone really well. Only had the Harmony for a couple of weeks, but once I got it set-up, there have been very few issues. It's worked well and as expected.
Pros:
Being able to put all of our components in a closet, out of sight, has been really nice. Thus far it's been reliable and I have had no issues or problems. It's worked great. The one button function to turn everything on/off has been really nice & much easier than turning things on individually. Once I realized I could fine tune the remote to control various components (channel on one, volume on another, etc...) it's been even better.
Cons:
The set-up took a little bit of time, mainly for the remote itself. I had to update java on my Mac to access the on-line app/controls, but honestly not a huge deal. Might be a little bit of a challenge if you aren't technically inclined.. I prefer the Harmony remote as opposed to the iPhone app. I'm not a hug fan of the set-up of the iPhone app, but that's just me.

Remote Harmony

Written By MarkU, Essex, ct on Wednesday, January 15, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A three was as low as I could go. Most of the rating goes to Crutchfield for there great service and competitive price. A fraction of the third star goes to the product. It is clever but setting without calling tech support was difficult. The way the packaging is designed is Apple like but the intuitiveness in the software, hardware and little note in the box did not go quite as easily as it could if only a few sentences would be added to the shipped instructions. The way that Logitech has approached remote emulation is very clever as you deal in activities that link tasks and devices. The product itself is ok with a few minor bugs that I am sure are related to the video, cable and audio equipment configuration. After using this for a couple of weeks I might not recommend it as it still has not solved all of my devices.
Pros:
does work. clever design. adequate implementation.
Cons:
bad documentation. some incompatibility with device configurations

Great remote

Written By Alan L, Millbrae, CA on Monday, January 06, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Remote is very easy to setup and use. I have previously used the Logitech 890 and this one is much easier setup since you don't need to connect it to the computer for each little change. The remote feels great as well even thought it is described as a optional remote. I use both the app and remote and both work well. Ordering a second one for the dining room.
Pros:
Nice build, ease of setup, and ability to use smartphone and tablet
Cons:
No charging, backlite keys, and only 3 direct activities (6 total) to control from remote, only one extra IR blaster included

One Fabulous Accessory

Written By Joseph, Hobe Sound, FL on Sunday, December 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After looking for a great remote control for many many years, I have found it. It required fine tuning until I got all my components working like I wanted. It is definitely a "must have" for the home theater. My remote programs a 70" Sharp TV, a Yamaha RX-V2500 7.1 ch receiver, a Pioneer Elite SC-67 9.2 channel receiver, an Oppo 103 Blu-Ray, and a Dish Sat/DVR receiver. Speakers are connected in 2 rooms and a patio. This remote does it all.
Pros:
Elegant, Effective, Easily Programmable, Long lasting battery charge, Good Visuals. Nice size.
Cons:
Price is a bit steep (but well worth it). A bit of a learning curve depending on the equipment and complexity of the programming user desires. Not difficult just time consuming.

Logitech® Harmony® Smart Control

Written By Rhett, Denham Springs, LA on Monday, November 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Buyer beware. When first purchased the unit worked as advertised and it was all we needed. Recently (after about 2 months) it started losing WiFi connectivity. It has become unusable. There is a long diatribe on the Logitech site about problems with this system. A recent firmware upgrade was supposed to address the problem but has not worked for me. A few others indicate that the firmware upgrade worked so-so. I hope those with recent purchases have better luck than I. I've e-mailed Harmony and have not received any response.
Pros:
If you get one that works it is perfect for a minimalist user who wanted RF capability to avoid IR.
Cons:
It does not work.

Smart Control for Dummies

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For no nonsense setups, i.e. DVD player, cable box, and TV, it couldn't get any easier. I installed this in a customer's kids TV room and it has become hassle-free for his wife, mother-in-law, babysitters, whoever to either watch TV or play a movie. Perfect universal remote to 'dumb-it-down' for the non-techie.
Pros:
Simple setup via myharmony.com; true plug-and-play functionality; it just works.
Cons:
IR blaster should come with adhesive.

A Great Addition Of Harmony In My House

Written By EricS, Glendale, CA on Sunday, November 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My third addition to a Harmony Remote to my house, and I just bought another. You can use it fool proof for the whole family (the Ultimate is a tricky one to get to the channel key in pad, whereas the Smart Control has a channel number pad on it), and it looks good!
Pros:
Easy to program, sleek design and look, can use the remote or your SmartPhone.
Cons:
No infrared, so must still use the original remote for volume. The hub should have some mounting holes so you can mount it to a wall or somewhere else.

This is a great product. Works very well. Got it because I have all of my audio visual devices in a cabinet and the remote for my DirecTV could not contro the volume on my Onkyo Receiver when the cabinet was closed. I set this up and it works exactly as advertised.
Pros:
Controls the devices hidden in a cabinet.
Cons:
Instructions for setting up need to be a little better.

Logitech® Harmony® Smart Control

Written By Mike, Minnesota on Thursday, October 24, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works great!! Was thinking of different ways to operate my complex system, and this fit the bill. Would have given it 5 stars but initial setup (looking for hubs) was a bit challenging. My wife loves it since she no longer has to stand "in front" of the system and hope everything turns on ok. The HELP is way better than my old Logitech remote since it doesn't ask a bunch of questions I don't have an answer for anyway. The mobile app is pretty awesome as well. It also works well with APPLE TV !!
Pros:
Works...even thru walls Help is simple to use Included remote is simple and also works thru walls.
Cons:
Initial Setup No HELP button on included remote, only thru the APP.

Logitech has another winner

Written By Norjg, Madison, WI on Wednesday, October 16, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Logitech Harmony Smart Control does what it should. It lets you control your audio and video devices from Android and iOS devices. It is convenient having the controls for all (most) of my audio and video components in 1 device.
Pros:
Setup was easy. The device works well.
Cons:
Although I thought setup was easy, the instructions were limited. There were gaps in the instructions that were not too intuitive. A friend has the similar device and had to call customer support at least 2 times for assistance. I learned from him. Only 8 devices can be controlled. Since this is digital and memory prices are low, the limit should be higher. I had to eliminate 2 devices from the control.

Great if you leave the lights on and don't skip commercials

Written By Steve, Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, October 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I watch almost everything via DVR on a time delay so I skip commercials. I hit the skip forward button more than any other. I should have studied up on this remote more because I was baffled at the lack of a skip button. Even the expensive version of the remote does not have skip buttons. The long press skip does not work with my Uverse box, plus long-press-to-skip is not a reasonable solution for me. So I programmed the colored buttons to skip, although they're not an ergonomic fit for skipping and I'm not the only remote user, so it became a problem. We watch in a darkened room where this remote is near impossible to use until you've memorized the key locations.

The app is pretty neat although it is much, much less efficient than using a remote. I have to keep skipping between 3 or 4 screens to work the basic controls, and I (obviously) can't feel the buttons so there is no ergonomic benefit. The virtual skip forward / back buttons are even disabled in the app. Someone at Logitech apparently has a beef with skip buttons on remotes - makes no sense to me. But at least the app is backlit, and while the gestures are pretty cool, they don't approach the usefulness of a well designed remote.

The hub is just fantastic - in theory, it could employ all kinds of Wi-Fi or RF enabled devices as remotes, though in practice we'll have to wait and see what develops. I expect I'll re-purchase the hub at some point in the future when it works with a remote that suits me.
Pros:
- Impress your friends with the ability to use your (or their) tablet/smartphone to control your system. - Thorough program-ability via Harmony's online site - extensive device support and ability to create sophisticated activity controls. - The hub distributes IR effectively to multiple components on opaque shelves. - The use of RF between the remote and the hub avoids line-of-sight issues, and helps to ensure that long macro sequences are fully delivered to the appropriate devices
Cons:
No supported backlit remote controls with skip buttons (yet). Until one is available I'll stick with my Harmony 670.

Good inexpensive way to control devices out of sight but with limitati

Written By coolpal, Atlanta, GA on Friday, October 04, 2013

I have been a logitech harmony user (and could probably be called a fan) for over 5 years now but mostly used the regular IR remotes. Recently purchased this as this was the most inexpensive harmony to control devices out of sight (mine were in a bookshelf cabinet with doors) and for the most part like it for that purpose, but the lack of IR on the small remote that's included is a minor inconvenience as my TV is wall mounted and the included blasters can't reach that (I knew this limitation before I made the purchase).

The things I like in this package is the ability to use smartphones to control the device (tho I hardly find myself using this option so far), the ability to control PS3 (via bluetooth pairing) without any additional hardware, surprisingly better than my older harmonys for controlling the newer roku (3?) and most of all a great price I was able to grab this for.

On the flip side, the included basic remote is lacking some much needed buttons like help (to fix issues with an activity button not firing everything up the way it was programmed), dedicated skip and fast forward buttons (long press gets this done, but on a device like Tivo, the lack of dedicated buttons makes the navigation that much harder) and biggest of all, the ability to pick a device instead of an activity (the lack of screen is most likely the reason for this being absent). All of these are moot points if you want to use your smartphone.

pal :)
Pros:
relatively inexpensive, controls bluetooth devices too, RF and WIFI access
Cons:
lacks a full featured remote, not long enough cable for the mini IR blaster

Excellent but limited

Written By P., Philadelphia, PA on Thursday, October 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this remote to replace my Monster MCC AVL300-S (basically a rebranded Harmony 890) remote. I've used several Harmony remotes in the past, most recently a Harmony One and 550; as well as a multitude of other universal remotes in the past.

The first thing I noticed was the ease of setup compared to the older Harmony remotes. The iOS and Android app make setup much easier than using a computer. You still need to use a computer (to access myharmony.com) if you want to change specific buttons for an activity.

I've been using the remote for a few weeks now. The only downfalls of the product are that it has no IR (on the remote) and the keys are not backlit; most likely because of the battery (lithium coin cell) which is supposed to last a year. The IR is not an issue for most people unless you have your TV in one room and equipment in another; even then you can use the IR blaster and run the wire to the TV, but that is not always easy. For most people the hub will be in the same room as the equipment and you'll have no issues. Regarding the lack of a backlit display, it's not too much of a problem, the buttons are easy to remember for common commands. Button placement is good and each button can be programmed for a short press and a long press which is a great addition to the lineup.

I don't plan on using the apps to control my equipment often, only for specific commands I need rarely, if it's important enough of a command I can customize the remote for it.
Pros:
Great value, best remote in it's price range. RF, simple setup, great feeling remote. Latency for button presses out of the box is much better than other remotes I've used with tweaking. Also controls my PS3 without any additional adapters (and does so very smoothly).
Cons:
No IR on the remote, and keys are not backlit. Also, maximum of 6 activities for the remote (I believe the app can have more activities), and 8 devices (seemingly arbitrary device limit to separate this "low end" remote from their "Ultimate" line)

Most things I wanted at a reasonable price

Written By Odi, California on Monday, August 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was finally time to upgrade from a Harmony 550 because the down direction was sporadically working, and my research showed this newly released remote would be a perfect fit for me. After using it for a couple of weeks, it does not disappoint!

The biggest benefit for me is that the IR blaster sits in range of everything, so you can press a button and put the remote down. No more "help screen" needed because my wife or mother-in-law didn't point the remote long enough at the devices. No more trying to get line of sight from the kitchen counter or dining table. The next benefit for me is the non-LCD remote. I dreaded the reviews of other newer Harmony remotes with charging stations and awkward touchscreen interfaces, especially because of my toddler. This simplistic remote (which hopefully can be replaced for $30, the difference in price between Smart Control and Ultimate Hub) is great, with the brains placed high out of reach. Other benefits for me include PS3 control for movies, 10 command custom sequences (my old remote only had 6), and the ability to update the hub via iPhone app (you can even use the full computer based interface, and then use the app to sync the changes).

I originally thought 1 IR blaster only would be a con, but I didn't even need a blaster. The hub is powered from the wall and seems to emit strongly enough to not need line of sight with the TV (reflecting off walls 10 feet away, I only needed to increase the delay between button presses for the TV).
Pros:
No line of sight needed with remote / app, non LCD / Touchscreen remote, PS3 / Wii control, iOS / Android control and programming
Cons:
iOS app default layout not intuitive, no way to copy custom layout between devices, custom sequences only for Smart Control Remote, custom sequences specific to each activity (I needed to enter 3 10 command sequences 3 times), iOS app must scan and cannot specify IP of remote

Love this remote

Written By Geekysqueek, Wisconsin on Friday, July 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had quite a few Logitech Harmony Remotes: from 520, 880, One and some old ones I can't even remember model name. With my new Theater set up all the equipment installed inside the niche and my Harmony One angle wasn't turning on some of the components. I first thought upgrading to Touch, however it had mixed reviews so I pulled the trigger on relatively inexpensive Smart Control. I figured I don't need $350 version that just is a glorified remote that has touchscreen. Set up was easy, now I can control it from any iDevice I have in my house and have spare remote with hardware buttons that I like.

I had to replace my first Smart Control since it wasn't connecting to my Wi-fi, Crutchfield sent me a new one which worked just fine.
Pros:
Simple, easy to set up, a lot of flexibility with positioning, doesn't need direct line of sight for remote or phone to operate; reasonably priced
Cons:
Remote buttons are not led; web set up on Mac won't work with Chrome; only 2.4 Ghz Wi-fi compatibility

Best in class

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned many Harmony and other universal remotes. The Harmony Smart Remote blows all away. Bluetooth technology eliminates any line-of-sight issues, and makes my smartphone into another remote. The hardest part of setup is placement of the hub and any IR blasters you need.
Pros:
1. Huge supported devices list 2. Extremely easy setup 3. The Hub: 3a. Bridges Bluetooth to Infrared. Think RF performance through walls, etc. 3b. Centralizes the logic & allows multiple simultaneous remotes. Substitute or add 1 or more smartphones/tablets as remotes w/different button layout for each. 3c. Supports BT devices (PS3) that don't work with IR or RF.
Cons:
1. For the price Logitech could include (2) IR blasters 2. The BT transmitter remote buttons aren't backlit and don't glow. Invisible in the dark. 3. The BT transmitter remote lacks special-function programmable buttons. Controlling a TV, satellite DVR, and audio receiver every button is already allocated.

Logitech® Harmony® Smart Control

Written By Anonymous, Mt. Pleasant, SC on Thursday, June 27, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent remote. Works ten times better than my Aeros Universal remote. I can make changes to the programming myself; therefore, eliminating the need of having a tech come out because he has the programming software. The swipe features are the coolest thing ever. The only issue I am having currently is editing my favorites after initial setup. I used my PC to update favorites and synced with hub; however, when I sync my iphone with the hub the changes do not appear.
Pros:
Easy setup and easy to use. Works great even from a different room.
Cons:
Editing after initial setup.

I was concerned by some comments regarding the setup. Needless to say, all went fine and we had 3 iphones and an ipad setup within minutes. On a daily basis, we are able to access any option at an amazing speed with no problems. My husband really enjoy the versatility and no longer need to worry with looking for the remote control.
Pros:
Fast and easy setup, quick response and function. Incredible product!
Cons:

Very nice remote

Written By Chris, Lexington, KY on Tuesday, June 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works well, looks good, and the build quality is excellent. It was easy to set up with the iphone app because I upgraded from another Harmony, so it gave me the option of importing my TV activity and settings. The only thing not imported were customized button settings. I have my hub in the open with no enclosed devices (only TV and sat receiver), so I don't have to use the mini-blaster. The remote uses a replaceable CR2032 coin battery that Logitech says should last a year or more, but since I really don't use the iphone as my remote, I'm not sure how long the battery will really last. If I get about three months I'll be happy... we'll see. And the battery type also explains why the buttons aren't backlit. A note on the "Help" feature: there is no "help" button on the remote because there's no display to guide you... only the app has it. Also, there is currently a flaw in the app because the help feature is only available when activities are "on", it's not available upon turning activities off. This means that if your TV or cable/sat box doesn't turn off, you have to either turn it off at the device or use the original remote (which defeats the purpose of the Harmony remote). I called Logitech, they verified it, and said they would "elevate" it to have the app updated... we'll see if they follow through. And I would have rated 5 stars, but very poor documentation and tech support's (aka "customer service") lack of product training lowered the rating a bit.
Pros:
Works well, looks good, high quality build.
Cons:
1. The app lacks the "Help" feature when activities are turned off. What happens if a device doesn't turn off ?? 2. Poor documentation. 3. Logitech's tech support is poor to fair. Lack of product training. I actually had to correct them a few times.

Replaced my old Harmony remote and am so glad I did. So much simpler and easy to use. Fast response. Snappy buttons. Not sure I will use the iPhone app that much, but it was necessary for the setup and extremely easy to follow and use for set up. I am very pleased with this purchase and a great value too.

Can this remote control any SMART TV features? Or just basic TV navigation? [ Jonathan  Jun 15, 2014 ]

  • The remote is pretty simple. My wife uses it. I don't know if it will control your smart tv or not. But the app will control most devices so I use the iphone app instead of the remote. [ ROBERT   Jun 15, 2014 ]
  • Basic Tv functions, but can assign tasks to the colored buttons for smart function. [ R   Jun 15, 2014 ]
We had a power outage during the last ice storm. Our Harmony Smart Control no longer operates the TV etc. That is, the hub doesn't respond to the remote signal. I tried taking out the hub's power connection and replacing it, and pushing the "reset" button on the back on the hub, but still no response when using the remote. Is there another way of restarting it? The TV and sound system work when used independently with their own remotes, but I like using the Harmony for everything. [ Anthony  Feb 07, 2014 ]

Can I program 2 remote systems in 2 rooms (next to each other) and keep the signals separate from each other? [ David  Dec 30, 2013 ]
7 answers
  • The RF physical remote would work fine since it pairs with a specific hub, and the app via wifi would work fine since each needs a unique IP address. My concern would be that the two rooms are close to each other and there are components in the two rooms that share IR signals (for example, cable box). The hub blasts the room with the IR signals and could inadvertently control the next room if the opening is large enough. Repositioning of the hub / problem components might mitigate the IR cross contamination, but it is hard to say without actually seeing the how the rooms are situated. [ LEONARD   Jan 04, 2014 ]
  • I'm sorry but I don't know the answer. I only have one Remote control. [ John   Jan 03, 2014 ]
  • I believe as long as you dont have too many components that it would be possible. [ DONALD   Dec 31, 2013 ]
  • The signal from the remote to the hub goes through wifi. Each remote is paired to one of the hubs; the signalling is separate from each other The signal from the hub to your devices goes via IR (infrared) signalling. If for example there was a doorway between your two rooms that allowed your devices in one room to "see" the IR signal from the hub in the other room, then that part of your signalling would not be separate. [ DONALD   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • Yes, you can. I have 4 of these in my home and they are all in close proximity. The remote communicates with the hub over RF, so multiple Smart Controls coexist just fine. [ RANDY   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • Sorry, don't know. [ PETER   Dec 30, 2013 ]
  • I believe so. Can't say I've tried it but as long as it's seperate you'll be good [ ANDREW   Dec 30, 2013 ]
All my devices except for the TV are located in a closet. The TV is in the living room. Can I use this remote to control the TV? I can't run the blaster from the closet to the TV. [ Patricia  Dec 20, 2013 ]
9 answers
  • No. the only way it would work if you added an additional wireless IR system but the delay would be insane. [ BRICE   Dec 23, 2013 ]
  • Thanks Timothy. I am buying the Utimate remote which I was told would do the trick. [ Patricia   Dec 23, 2013 ]
  • I suspect you can but I can't confirm that yet. I am in the same boat. Currently I just turn the TV on with the regular TV remote. After that the harmony system takes over nicely. There are two blaster plugs in the back of the unit, one of which can be used in your closet. I suspect you can sneak another blaster out of that closet to aim at the TV and then it should work. I plan to do the same thing over Christmas. I've just not had time to fool with it. [ RHETT W   Dec 21, 2013 ]
  • Thanks Eddie. I was looking at the ultimate. I was hoping that I did need to spend the extra amount. But you are correct. This is my only option. Many thanks for taking the time to answer my question. [ Patricia   Dec 20, 2013 ]
  • If you get the "Ultimate" version of this remote that should do it. The "Ultimate" comes with a remote with IR, which you can use for your TV. [ EDDIE   Dec 20, 2013 ]
  • Good thing your TV is not in the closet! I believe you should be able to use the remote on the TV but my setup is different. All my equipment is in plain sight. So I guess I don't have a definitive answer, but I believe it will work. [ RICHARD M   Dec 20, 2013 ]
  • The short answer is that you need a line of sight from the blaster to your TV. You don't need to run the blaster from the closet to the tv, as long as you can run the blaster wire outside the closet and aim it at the TV. I like mine a lot. I'd say if there is a way you can work it out, this is the remote to get. Occasionally the wifi drops, easily fixed by the reset button - or sometimes rebooting my router. I use a PS3 as a blu-ray player and streaming media hub - PS3 is bluetooth, the Harmony Smart eliminates the need for a separate bluetooth remote. My iPad and the 3 iPhones in our house all work as remotes, all work from anywhere in our house. [ JOHN P   Dec 20, 2013 ]
  • No, the remote talks to the hub, then the hub (and mini blaster if connected) sends out the signals to the devices. If the closet and TV are close to each other you maybe able to have the hub outside (for TV) and mini-blaster in the closet (or vica-versa)., or i may just work with the hub. my devices are setup in such a way that I usually need to have IR repeaters, but this does the job because it bombards the room with the signals. [ TIMOTHY   Dec 20, 2013 ]
  • Patricia I have a cabinet along an adjacent wall that houses all my components. My TV is mount above my fireplace. The blaster is probably 5 ft away from TV. I have had no problems at all. This remote is by far the best I have ever owned. I had a universal remote that cost 4 times as much as my harmony smart control and my harmony is 10 times better. Plus the set up and the ability to program my own remote vs the other one had to have a tech come out do to software was dealer use only. Hope this answers your question. [ HAMPTON J   Dec 20, 2013 ]
