Our take on the Logitech® Squeezebox™ Classic

by Tara W.

Enjoy your digital music on your favorite home speakers with the Squeezebox Classic from Logitech. This player connects to your computer using your wired or wireless home network and plays back most popular types of digital audio files, including high-quality lossless and uncompressed formats.

Built-in Wi-Fi® for easy setup and expandability
Setup is as simple as downloading the SlimServer software to your PC and adding the Squeezebox to your home network. The player also acts as a wireless bridge — you can connect a network-capable audio/video component, like a gaming system or home theater receiver, via an Ethernet cable. The Squeezebox will connect that device to your wireless home network.

Connections for your home audio system
The Squeezebox features an array of audio/video outputs, so you can make the best connection possible to your home audio system. Use the digital outputs to connect to your home stereo or home theater receiver. Or use the analog outputs to take advantage of the Squeezebox's high-quality digital-to-analog converter. Either way, you'll get crystal-clear, detailed sound. A wireless remote and bright, easy-to-read display on the Squeezebox make it a snap to control your tunes.

Add a Logitech Squeezebox Controller with an intuitive scroll wheel and 2-3/8" color LCD screen for more convenient operation.

Note: requires free SlimServer software download from www.slimdevices.com

helpful info

Written By recoveryone, San Bernardino, Ca on Sunday, January 29, 2012

I read some of the other reviews and felt a needed update would answer some questions. The squeezebox line has expanded from the Classic model displayed here to a few more:

Squeezebox radio Squeezebox boom Squeezebox touch Squeezebox Transporter

The Radio is pretty much as it sounds, it looks like a table top Radio, but uses the full services of the classic with its own speaker

The Boom is much the same with a boom box design

The Touch is the newest release and adds the touch screen GUI with artwork of album covers of your music.

Transporter is the Flagship model that will appeal to the audiophile group

In todays world of smart phones, squeezebox has apps that work on iphone, android OS and Win 7 phones. These apps may vary in detail preformance, but each will display your playlist in album art form. I can only speak about the win7 app on my Samsung Focus, as it gives me artist info and lyrics on most songs being played.
Pros:
The squeezebox line has set the standard for all others to meet in this age of digital music streaming
Cons:
The server software can be iffy, but once you have it right its a dream. Will need a P4 CPU with at least 1 gig ram to run the software smoothly.

Greatest music player ever,.... see why:

Written By pallpoul, tx usa on Sunday, May 03, 2009

If you are debating wether to sepnd the buck on this puppy,..debate no more..it is worth every penny.

I researcehed extensively this device before i decided to buy it, please read the manual..please do so before even plugging a single wire,..you will be thankfull you did.

I started by downloading the squeez center from slimdevices. and created an account. then I plugged the squeezebox to my receiver, then plugged my ethernet cable.

The input on my yamaha rx v565 receiver i chose was the CD...I am glade I did, the sound was great... can use rca, coax, or optical, i chose optical

now came configuration...I followed manual instruction which were very simple. the squeeze box detected my wireless network and I was prompted to enter the password,.. all great now.

So with squeezebox online with my wireless network, I specified which computer I will using to control it.

once the computer source was specified, it found my music library automatically, and I was able to play it instantly through my celing speakers,.... wow, wow, wow,... sound is crisp, cd quality.

then I went to play with the squeezcenter,..very easy interface,...

For online radio, i use mainly live365, ...great sound and streaming.

Now i am enjoying, music from online radio stations from arround the world

enjoy non stop music.

Logitech® Squeezebox™ Classic

Written By rich, East Haven, CT on Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Works as advertised! Crutchfield's advice was honest and accurate. This is exactly the product that I was looking for. Simple setup and perfect audio reproduction. I had a couple of questions, so I called the tech support phone number. The calls were all answered within seconds by people (in America!) that were knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I am very satisfied and will not only contact Crutchfield the next time that I am looking for electronics, but I will look first for a Logitech product. Thank you all!

Outstanding Product

Written By Wadle, Boulder CO on Tuesday, July 29, 2008

This an outstanding product. Using my exsiting WiFi home network and iTunes music library, the Squeezebox delievers flawless playback of all my music from the PC in my home office to my main stereo in the living room. I especially like the option to use a large font for the Squeezebox display which makes it readable across the room. I have also integrated the Squeezebox with my Logitech Harmony One universal remote - very simple.

This product is well designed, easy to set up and works perfectly.

Fantastic Product!

Written By Andy, Hamburg, NY on Sunday, June 29, 2008

I've had several MP3 based media servers over the past several years and this is the FIRST product that I enthusiastically recommend to my friends.

Simple setup, great out of the box appearance, and shockingly good sound quality all mean I'm using my MP3 collection more than ever before. (Full disclosure, I'm still a tube-amp'd, LP playing fool, but if you have to listen to MP3s, nothing makes them sound more brilliant, nor convenient than this.)

Unit also integrates nicely with the Logitech/Harmony One.

The only complaint is the Toslink digital out makes it sound a bit harsh, and as always, promptly pitch all in-box interconnects for a decent set.

I'm considering buying a few more for every stereo in the house (No kidding!)

It works and that is good

Written By Jim, St Paul MN on Friday, April 04, 2008

I am very pleased with this. I have been grappling with how to move audio through my condo for some time. My needs were very simple. Just wanted to get what I was playing off of my computer to other rooms in my condo.

First tried an FM transmitter from my computer to stereo set up. Cheap solution but lots of static. Then I bought a Roku soundbridge. Couldn't make it work. I

Returned it and months later bought this product. Unpacked it, plugged it in, told my wireless network its mac address and it worked beautifully.

Sounds great. AND I had a few questions and the customer support was among the best I have ever experienced. It is at the level of Crutchfield. I asked a question -- got an answer within 48 hours that was not canned -- someone actually read my question.... he invited to ask again if it did not work,,,, I did and within 12 hours the same person wrote back with another suggestion. So in this day and age of miracles and wonder -- this product delivered, and there was a human being who actually answered questions I had.

Squeezebox

Written By Rene, Derry , NH on Thursday, January 24, 2008

Terrific product. I am now listening to my .FLAC and .APE music collection on my PC. I connected my SB to my Bose Acoustic Wave and the Bose system never sounded better. I have also setup my SB to tune into my SIRIUS online subscription and I can also listen to my favorite sports stations online (and new ones I find by the day). Best money I spent over the holidays.

Awesome Concept/Product!

Written By Jim, SF Bay, CA on Wednesday, January 23, 2008

What a great concept! I've recorded all my library over to .FLAC files on my PC, and the Squeezebox plays them wirelessly using my home network!

Sound quality is terrific - shuffle mode immediate - and the internet radio stations are an added bonus.
