Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to setup, easy to connect to your network, easy to use and great sound from a small package... I'm even able to take it ouside and listed to it in my garage, a separate building from my house, so range is better than I expected. I'm able to get my local radio station, as well as those around the world...

Great little radio

Written By Randy, Savannah, GA on Thursday, August 04, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great little radio. The set up was pretty easy, although entering a long WEP password was a bit tedious. The sound is good and I love having my SiriusXM, Slacker, and last.fm stations available without any additional hook ups. I've had the radio for about a month and play it pretty much all day with no problems.

Problems with Setup

Written By Anonymous, Covington LA on Tuesday, August 02, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As previous reviews have noted, it is not simple to set up. It recognized my wifi connection no problem but would not make the connection to the squeezebox server. I tried for an hour, even hooked up with direct ethernet cable, no luck. Checked my internet connection on my laptop, no problem. Finally I gave up and it was too late to call technical support. Came back the next day and it hooked right up! Since then I noticed that it will occasionally drop the server connection and have difficulty hooking back up - no reason provided. Aside from that it is great. The menu took a little getting used to. Sound quality is excellent.

Best on the Market

Written By Doug D, Rochester,NY on Thursday, July 07, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit and works great. Sound is good , volume could be louder, at highest level not real load. Good bass and my only drawback is that operating instructions are terrible and this player has many good features that are not explained or told how to operate? Remote has all features you need but again no operating manual on what buttons do what. Only small drawback on remote is buttons too close to each other. As said this is the best on market to date.

Finally radio for the signal challenged

Written By John F, Natick, MA on Tuesday, June 28, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a purchase to replace my older table-top radio that got fried in a lightning storm and decided to try something to improve my signal challenged location and glad I did. My home office is in the basement and had poor reception even with lots of Boston stations and the hassles of special antennas was a pain. The Squeezebox was just what I needed and now I have so many choices for local and world-wide stations all via the internet. Other than resolving my reception issues the next best thing is the online remote control on mysqueezbox.com. I can control the radio from across the room (or across the world for that matter) and see the stations/favorites etc via a Web Remote Control which is far superior than doing it on the radio itself. I do have to say I'm not so impressed with the sound quality but I have Bose and Cambridge Soundworks table-radios and this unit doesn't compare but it was half the price.

All in all I'm happy with this purchase and will probably be happier when I connect the unit to home system and just use more as a tuner and remote.

Love it.

Written By Scott, Salem, IL on Wednesday, June 22, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally purchased the Squeezebox Radio, I liked it so much I decided I needed to have the Boom for the stereo. The speakers on these Logitech Squeezeboxes are wonderful for their size.

Pros: It was easy to set up, pretty much plug and play except for signing up for various services. The speakers sound great. It comes with a remote. Well constructed, the controls feel solid. Large selection of installable apps. Adjustable display.

Cons: It could use a handle to make it easier to move around. How can you have a boom box without a handle? The remote is quite small. Many of the apps require subscriptions. It does not have the nice graphic display like the Radio, just scrolling text.

Great sound (but add a Subwoofer!)

Written By Eml182, Philadelphia, PA on Sunday, May 15, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product is a great complement to the Squeezebox family. I would definitely add a
subwoofer to this thing as it really picks up the lows and allows the unit to
focus on the mid-high range (100 HZ is the cutoff). In all honesty, if you had
two of these in a large room with one sycned to a sub and the other sycned to a
dummy sub, you would get a heck of a system.

Love this product. Don't know why I didn't buy it long ago. So much better than
listening to FM radio. Haven't had any quirky problems yet that I've heard other
people have had. Very happy with it so far and recommend to anyone.

Squeezebox Boom totally worth it

Written By Uncle Bone, Great Falls, VA on Friday, May 13, 2011

Very cool radio! A little difficult to set up, but if I can do it, anyone can. Can listen
to radio from all over the world...hundreds of stations. I also listen to Sirius and
everything on my iTunes. If you're on the fence, like I was, I say 'go for it'. You
can probably return it if you are not satisfied. Easy to move from one room to
another, even outdoors on my deck. Built solid and decent quality sound for a
box this size.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent product. They have really thought this out. With one knob and a
button I can usually find about anything I'd like to listen to in under a minute, in
bed, in the dark. Heavy enough that pushing a preset doesn't tip the radio.
Very good audio quality.

This is the 4th Squeezebox Boom I've purchased for myself and friends, and every day
I'm amazed at the performance of this product. The only problem I've experienced is
with initially setting up the WiFi. After than the radio works flawlessly. I wish there was
another row for presets. Six buttons isn't enough. Also, I wonder if Logitech has
considered incorporating voice command using the remote?

Is Boom a bust?

Written By Hank, Johnson City, TN on Thursday, February 10, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The folks at Logictech sure skimped on the instructions. The totally inadequate instructions included in the Quick Start Guide are ridiculous. It does not even begin to cover what is needed to set it up when you already have an existing wireless network. I guess they wanted to skimp on the cost to include decent instructions.

Next, shortly after I got it up, it suddenly quit. Turns out they automatically downloaded a new software version without my knowledge and it had fatal errors in it. I had to spend an hour waiting for tech support to learn this and to get then to install the older software version. Pretty sloppy in their Software QC.

Next they advertise this a plug it in and use it. Wrong.

Next, they say you can listen to your favorite internet radio stations. WRONG. The station has to broadcast in a format supported by the Boom. None of our favorites does.

Finally, my Boom stops playing frequently. This is not a wireless problem as I have plugged it directly into my Ethernet line and it still stops. Yes, it is easy to restart it by pressing one button twice, but why should I? Seems it should be able to restart itself.

All this being said, we do enjoy it and the good sound we get from it. I would like to add another to my home, but not for this price. It is worth half of that.

Great purchase

Written By CraigM, Michigan on Sunday, February 06, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Every once in a while you make a purchase that really pleases you. This is one
of those for me. I was skeptical of the sound out of this little package, but
it really sounds very good. True audiophiles might take issue with it, but I
think it's great for the money and what it does. I don't get much choice in
traditional radio stations where I live, but that's irrelevant now. I can
listen to any type of music, talk, sports, anything I want. Found out there are
TWO stations dedicated to Pink Floyd 24/7! Amazing.

Setup was a piece of cake. I think I was listening to music within 10 minutes
of unpacking. I signed up for free Pandora service and am building
individualized "stations" just for me. It's great.

The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 was that I have to keep going
through the setup when I start it (about 5 button pushes). That may be operator
failure, and I haven't called the great people at Crutchfield to check. I'll
do that soon. I would recommend this to anyone and will consider getting
another for the second floor of my house. Terrific product!

Love My Squeezebox Boom!

Written By John C, Powell, OH on Tuesday, February 01, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I spent over 20 hours researching the latest "traditional" boom boxes available and didn't find much that is a quality, well-made device that has all of these features:

1. It's compact
2. Has great sound
3. Has an auxiliary input for MP3 players, NOT an Ipod docking station
4. Does NOT have a cassette player (don't need or want it)
5. Has a digit clock (alarm was optional, but wanted to display the time)
6. Has a remote

I hadn't even considered an internet radio since I didn't think the technology would be advanced or stable enough yet. Then I found the Logitech Squeezebox Boom while searching online and I was intrigued by the number of positive reviews it had received. After satisfying my questions about features and options through further research, I made the plunge for Christmas 2010. So glad I did! It met or exceeded all of my requirements and expectations.

The only feature it doesn't have that concerned me at first, is a built-in AM/FM receiver in case I lose wi-fi for any length of time. I came to realize, though, that many MP3 players have built-in FM receivers, so in a pinch I could still use this thru the aux input. Haven't had to do that yet.

I love my Squeezebox Boom!

Logitech® Squeezebox™ Boom

Written By AnnE, Durango, CO on Sunday, January 30, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All in all, I'm glad I bought this. I live in an area with terrible FM
reception, so I use the Boom every day, but it's not my all time favorite
device. Setup was manageable but not exactly a breeze. I'm technically
proficient (but not an expert), and I had to struggle a bit with getting the
Boom connected wirelessly to the internet and the station selection setup
separately on a Mysqueezebox website. (Why the heck do we have to register the
device? Why can't we just connect to the website?!) The sound is decent but
definitely not top quality. It's really just a tabletop radio. You can output
a signal to your home theater, but only by plugging in a cable to the Boom's
headphone output jack. That shorts out the sound to the Boom's own speakers.
So every time you want to listen to just the Boom, you have to unplug the cable.
There should be an easier way to do this. Even connected to a home theater,
the sound still isn't CD quality. Station selection is OK but not stellar. It
won't play certain formats via Mysqueezebox, such as aap+. You can play some of
these stations only if you access them via your computer (using Squeezebox
Center), then stream them from your computer to the Boom. A needless
limitation, especially for those of us who don't have a music server on our
system. But all in all, I recommend the Boom if you're willing to put up with
the needless limitations on a relatively expensive device.

Good for tech-geeks (who wake up on their own)

Written By threej, New Jersey on Saturday, January 29, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A byzantine device menu system and unnecessarily complicated and anti-intuitive web-based controls mar this otherwise splendid-sounding unit.

Sadly, when set up properly, alarms may occasionally vanish from the Squeezebox Boom, rendering its alarm function worthless. Presets can evaporate, as well; but they, at least, have less formidable consequences for the employed who need to be at work at specified times.

Only the low sale price of my purchase and the too-high price of alternative solutions lend this item its attractiveness.

BOOM ROCKS!!!

Written By Russ, New Orleans, LA on Sunday, January 23, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my 3rd unit from Slim Devices, acquired by Logitech. I am the original owner of a SLIMP3 circa 2001. With BOOM, they've still got it. Wow factor is better than ever. Starting with packaging, it's like opening a Christmas present. From there, I was startled at how small BOOM is-no taller than a 12-oz can of coke. The design is tight. But the engineering is better. Probably 90% of BOOM owners will simply follow the instructions: "Plug it in. Turn it on. Rock the House." And BOOM gladly rocks. For anyone technically inclined, Logitech has posted a white paper entitled "Logitech Squeezebox Boom Audio Design" by Caleb Crome. Read this, and BOOM's unstated cool factor jumps out in spades. Individual digital amps and DACs for each of 4 speakers. BOOM's software-defined architecture allows for upgrading its sound and features well into the future. The software design for maximizing bass response in this little unit is ingenious. Which leads into my initial disappointment over the bass response. From photos I knew BOOM would struggle pulling off the bass I am accustomed to. I run 1300 watts RMS in my car and 900 watts RMS on my home theater, subwoofer in each. I was encouraged by reviews of the sound quality, but when I "plugged in, turned on, & rocked the house," bass was missing in action. As luck would have it, I had a mini-jack to RCA 'Y' cable from an old CD player. We are definitely in business now! Run BOOM with a sub and ROCK THE HOUSE!

Love it!
Surprisingly big sound. I've been looking for a way to bring music back into my
life. Don't have time to deal with CDs or even managing songs on an iPod. The
Squeezebox gives you nearly unlimited ways to access music you love. The
Squeezeboxserver software is cool and allows you to manage the Squeezebox
completely from your computer if you want. I've been using Pandora, Internet
radio and accessing all the music on my home server. I had a small issue
playing ogg files natively, but the squeezeboxserver software made it easy to
resolve. I'll probably buy more of these for around the house, office, etc.

This Box Rocks !!

Written By Oregon Bob, Southern Oregon on Friday, November 26, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've only had this a week but I am extremely satisfied with it's performance. I
had the software installed on my computer before I received the radio, so the
setup was a snap.

All the reviews I read before my purchase made my decision a good one. This box
is hefty, sounds excellent and it "just works". I'm happy with my purchase.

simply awsome!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I cant say enough good things about the Boom. If you're thinking about buying, do it. You
will not be disappointed. I did extensive research on internet radios & the boom was the
best choice. Sound is very good, stand alone. I invested in the 3.5mm to RCA chord &
patched it into my home system.

I am a huge music lover and was very dissatisfied with local & satellite radio (especially
since XM removed Fine Tuning). With over 20,000 different stations to chose from, variety
is no longer an issue.

Contrary to many reviews I had read, I had the Boom installed & playing within minutes
of opening the box. Set up was a snap.

I have not been this delighted with a purchased product probably since I got my first
computer. I have found absolutely no problems with this awsome product. As a very, very
small suggestion, a handle on the top for carrying room to room or out on the deck
would have been nice.

Logitech® Squeezebox™ Boom

Written By BarclayN, St. Louis on Monday, November 01, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We absolutely LOVE this thing!!! Good sound quality, great features, and a small
footprint. I think our favorite feature is being about the tie two different Pandora accounts
to the unit. So I have my Pandora channels, and with a click of the button, my Wife can
switch over to her channels. Searching for new channels is a little bit of a hassle when
doing it directly from the unit. It's not hard, it just takes longer since you don't have a
keyboard. I find that it's quicker and easier to log onto my PC, and use the squeezebox
website to add new features and stations. Then you can use remote control from the
website and launch the music to your base unit.

Exceptional product and service. Crutchfield is simply the best. Not always the lowest price on the web but always the best service and shipping.
The squeezebox boom is the best sounding internet radio on the market. Pandora is better than having an extensive CD or MP3 collection. It's like someone who knows you very well has made an infiinite mix tape for you. No disappointment all around.

This is a great product. It has more features than a hackers dream. For the non Technical minded folks setup may be a challenge. Help from LogicTech is good. I made a mistake in setup and they responded and corrected the mistake on their end. Sound is great with more music than you can listen to. Wish I had got this sooner!

Best Decision I Could Have Made

Written By Anonymous, Tampa, FL on Friday, June 04, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I desired to simplify my life and so I decided to purchase an internet radio. I wanted FREE access to radio from across the WORLD. I did the research and found the Logitech Squeezebox Boom. I received my order very quickly. It arrived in excellent condition. It was very easy to set-up. You only have to visit the website and set up your account, leave it up while your radio communicates with it for a few moments, and you're done. You don't have to have your internet up to play the radio after that. It connected to my wifi network very easily. The sound is excellent. I don't know enough to know if that's because it comes from cable or because of the radio itself?? Either way, the sound is amazing. I have the radio located in my great room. The living room part of the great room is about 30' x 20' and the ceilings are 15' high. The radio definitely fills the room. My bedroom is about 80' away from my router and the radio has no problem with the distance or walls in between. I am VERY happy with my purchase.

Great product and very happy with it.

Written By Peter, Kerrville, TX on Thursday, April 15, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Keep in mind that this is not your grandmother's radio. So, as with all software-driven electronic equipment, it does take a bit of savvy and patience to go through the motions of setting it up and figuring out the various options and possibilities. (You do need to keep your computer running to have internet radio reception and while listening I have my laptop on "Standby").

The sound quality from the small 3-inch speakers is very good and with excellent base response. Regardless, I also hooked mine up to another amplifier, bigger speakers and a small subwoofer through the headphone jack. I then selected the audio menu settings that give the best sound quality.

The Squeezebox Boom definitely opens up a new world of radio (literally and figuratively), plus adds great new possibilities of music listening enjoyment. Can't go wrong with this purchase.

Easy setup, great sound, wonderful tech support

Written By Anonymous, Idaho on Monday, March 15, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this great little stereo!! I normally research my tech purchases to death, but this was such a no-brainer to me, I ordered the same hour I saw it. I have not regretted it!

The setup was surprisingly easy. I did have a little trouble, but after a quick call to Logitech support, the guy had me hooked up and playing in under 5 minutes (it required a reset for my problem-I wouldn't have known that)! Pandora setup was a cinch. I have been using the Boom for over a week now, for hours every day. It also has a great sleep timer that I use every night.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, simplicity of use, ability to expand to more units, the magnetic spot to hold your remote (small though that may sound, I am good at losing them)

Cons: I couldn't get it to play my Sony Walkman MP3 player with much success--it played, yes, but I had to crank the volume ALL the way up to even hear it. Not made for that, I guess.

I haven't had a problem with the artist name showing up like the reviewer before me--it has shown up on every song that I've seen. Maybe not available on every site?

I feel that I am getting so much more use out of my internet now. What a great idea!

I love my Squeezebox Boom!

Written By Anonymous, Collegeville, PA on Sunday, January 17, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Many people tell me I am way to finicky about the quality of my music. I fuss with equipment to get great sound. I was very skeptical about the ability of this little box to produce "room-filling quality audio." But Logitech has hit a home run with this one. The sound is fantastic, even deep bass from these small speakers . . . unbelievable!

I really enjoy the easy portability. Also, integration to online services such as Pandora is so easy a child could do it. The only two enhancements needed are:
1. Better range. I get a very low signal on the second floor of my home and outside on my patio. The signal strength is OK on my laptop computer, so it should be good on the Squeezebox Boom. But, for some reason, the Boom does not receive the signal as well.
2. Display the artist name when streaming music. It currently displays title only.

These two shortcomings are the only reasons that I cannot give 5 stars to this fantastic audio streaming device.

I can't remember the last time I was wowed by a product, but the Logitech squeezebox boom has done just that. This is the most amazing music player I have ever seen. The set up was simple, and under 5min was playing internet radio and my own music library from the pc, all though the network. The sound quality is excellent. So much better than the competition. This unit is feature packed and just a great player in every way. Thanks Crutchfield for selling such a wonderful product at a great price.

Never Buy Music Again

Written By TJ, Johnson City, TN on Sunday, August 30, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product! I purchased a portable radio and could not get it to work. I am so glad it did not work now. Returned it, did some research, and found the Squeezebox Boom. Crutchfield had the lowest price, and free shipping. Not only can I listen to free Slacker Radio, but also free Pandora and other music services and hundreds of internet stations including local stations that stream on the internet. Set up was fairly simple, down loaded squeeze center free to listen to music I have on my computer. You can connect it to your home stereo via the headphone jack or take it to any room or outside on the deck and listen to great music. I also use an imac as my wireless router, no problems using Squeezebox. I have not tapped into the full potential of this product yet and I still love it. Never buy music again!

Best gadget I've ever used

Written By bakum, Alameda, CA on Thursday, June 11, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Squeezebox Boom is simply put the best gadget I've ever used. My wife
agrees. It is amazingly simple to operate yet surprisingly sophisticated. The
sound is also fantastic - rich and full.

Out of the box it was connected to my wireless network within three minutes
(and my SSID is not broadcast so I have to type it in manually), exactly 30
seconds later I was browsing my Pandora account.

FYI - I am a fairly technical guy, been working with computers for going on 20
years. This product is simply the best combo of tight hardware and slick, well
written software I've ever used.

Logitech® Squeezebox™ Boom

Excellent product! Set up was a little confusing, but with some persistence it works perfectly. If you have diverse music preferences, this is the product for you as it is possible to program all your favorite genres, from all over the world. The sound quality is superb for such a small package. The set up and programming of stations takes a little while to figure out, but once you get the hang of it you will be pleased. I have been waiting for a product like this for nearly 50 years - it is finally here.

Best Purchase in a Year

Written By KW, Kentucky on Saturday, February 14, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After much research I decided to purchase the Squeezebox. The initial set up was completed in 2-3 minutes and couldn't have been any easier. It found my wireless network instantly and I was playing music in less than 5 minutes. It also plays any streaming radio station (which most are) and even syncs up to your Pandora or other free internet music accounts.

The sound of this system is great and easily adjustable to each listener's preference thru the web browser interface.

I would strongly recommend this product to anyone who doesn't want to be restricted to playing your music thru your IPOD. One word of caution, the Squeezebox will not play mp4's (Apples protected music file format).

The only downside to this devise I can find is the documentation that it shipped with the Squeezebox is somewhat limited. I would recommend browsing Logitech's website for additional information.

Best of it's type

Written By dannytroy, Bronxville, NY on Thursday, February 12, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After doing some pretty extensive research I thought the Squeezebox Boom should suit my needs. I wasn't wrong. The sound is big and the physical size is small. It's a well constructed unit and it looks great. It even looks pretty good mounted on my bathroom wall. Logitech sells a wall mounting kit, but I was able to use a ready-made piece of "L" stock, and with a little drilling it worked perfectly, and is very secure. The wall mounting flange on the unit is recessed, so after mounting on the wall all you see is the unit....not an ugly bracket holding it.

Sound quality: excellent. I turn the treble up full, and because of the amount of bass this unit puts out, I leave the bass setting at neutral.

I haven't cranked it up fully, but I can see this unit filling the area up with sound when I use it on my deck for parties next summer.

The interface with the computer is excellent, although I haven't installed SqueezeCenter since I primarily use it for Internet radio. I use the music service Pandora, that I discoved after installing the Squeeze Network software, and I highly recommend it for use with the Squeezebox.

About the only feature that is lacking is a front mounted earphone jack. That really should have been on this unit, and would not have detracted from it's appearance.

I'm already thinking about buying a second unit!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have used Slimdevices products for a while now. I recently bought the Boom to replace our rather dated alarm clock. I love it!!. Now, I have access to our rather extensive media on our file server, served up with the open source "Squeezecenter" software. I also subscribe to Pandora, Slacker and Rhapsody, all excellent services. You can set a number of different alarms, which is handy because my wife and I get up at different times. We like to use the built in sound effects such as Outside Rain, and Ocean Surf to seep with. It really helps to cut down on the other ambient noise such as passing cars on our street. I'm VERY pleased with this device, and would recommend it to anyone interested.

Great product with some minor quirks

Written By Harry, Simi Valley, CA on Tuesday, January 27, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Squeezebox Boom is great bang for your buck amongst the currently available Internet radios out there in the market. It produces surprisingly rich sound given its size and, after the initial setup hassles, is as easy to use as a clock-radio (with a LOT more functionality). Some random observations/caveats based on my 3 months' usage:

* It's definitely not a toaster: you have to be fairly nerdy to get maximum benefit out of this device. In other words, don't gift this to your grandmother.
* Works with many free Internet radio services and some paid ones (e.g. Sirius), but does not work with Napster.
* Once in a while it'll stop playing the station that you've tuned in to. The display will show "connected" and "playing" as if nothing's wrong; it's usually fixed by scrolling back and re-tuning.
* Does not remember the last station you were listening to (at least I haven't figured how to make it).
* You do not have to disable your Wi-Fi security to make it work -- just disable the firewall during initial setup.
* The SqueezeCenter software is not very refined. For example, it doesn't allow you to organize your favorite channels into folders by category.
* An unadvertised feature is that you can set up the display to scroll RSS news feeds even when the radio is off.
* I wish it could run on alkaline battery power as that would make this unit truly portable.

Minor quibbles on what otherwise is a fantastic product.

Logitec Squeezebox Boom

Written By Paul, Bergen County NJ on Sunday, January 18, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well designed, well priced, with good sound qualities.

Quite good sound for a table radio
It has ever feature that I would need in a beside clock radio
Set up required reading the instructions-- it is not intuitive
I have had some freezes of the unit but generally a power off corrects it or at the maximum a factory restore is required (this takes less than 5 minutes)
The network site from Logitec would be better if it contained additional music services- such as Acurradio

OVERALL HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

tech challenged

Written By Mercedes, Logansport, IN on Friday, January 16, 2009

Now that it's finally working we are enjoying the squeezebox's clear sound and station selection, but it took time to get here.

We had a secure wireless network. In that circumstance the squeezebox does not set itself up. Crutchfield's tech person was friendly and patient, but was stymied. Logitech's (squeezebox) first tech person was impatient, unwilling to specify whether he was giving me directions for computer set-up, on the squeezebox, or using the remote and seemed to switch freely among all three. Logitech's second tech person was convinced that the problem was that I was trying to use Pandora and hadn't paid (Pandora is free). They ended up saying what my kids say: just fiddle with it and it will reveal itself.

After six weeks of this I tried making my network "unsecured" and the squeezebox then set itself up.

I cannot get the specific programs and podcasts that I asked about when I first called Crutchfield regarding this product. But the sound is so good, and the programs and stations that are available so satisfying. And the music service Pandora is fabulous. With memories of a frustrating set-up fading, we are very happy with this product.

Squeezebox Boom

Written By Gary, Simi Valley, CA on Sunday, December 14, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overview:

The Squeezebox Boom is a nice sounding Internet radio and network music player, with lots of useful features. I use mine primarily as an Internet radio via SqueezeNetwork (no PC needed for operation of the radio), although I have tried using it as a network music player via SqueezeCenter (with a PC).

Pros:

Compact size

Useful remote control

Very good sound quality with clear midrange and smooth highs. Excellent bass extension for its size. Plays quite loudly.

Separate bass/treble controls (not noted in specs, but it does have them)

Controllable/configurable via web browser. This is convenient for setting up Favorites or customizing menus and displays.

Wireless B works fine all the way across my house (works best when wireless strength is 60 or more)

Automatic firmware updates over the network

Cons:

Switching from SqueezeNetwork (PC-free interface) to SqueezeCenter (requires PC or NAS device) sometimes problematic, especially when the two interfaces call for different versions of firmware (i.e., one is ahead of the other in the software development cycle)

A couple times it was unable to connect to SqueezeNetwork for awhile, so I couldn't use it (one of these times was the day of a firmware update). Don't discard your over-the-air radio!

There are no folders available for Favorites (it's only a flat list)

Shiny black case shows dust and fingerprints. Case and display seem to scratch easily.
