Just connect the remote to your computer (see requirements below) with the supplied USB cable and go to the Harmony Remote website. There you'll be asked a few simple questions about the components you have and how they're set up. When you're done, click the mouse and your remote's programmed. Best of all, you get a personal page that remembers your setup, so as your system changes, reprogramming the Harmony remains quick and easy. Just add the new components, delete the old ones, and download your new settings. Harmony's Smart State Database includes virtually all audio and video gear, from TVs and DVD players to TiVo® and ReplayTV devices, satellite radio home tuners, game boxes — even lighting and curtain controls.

"Activity" buttons on the remote give you intuitive one-touch control of your system. For example, if you want to play a DVD, just press "play DVD." The remote instantly evaluates your system, turning on or off the appropriate components, selecting the proper inputs, and starting the DVD player. The 688 is a learning remote as well, so you can further fine-tune its operation as well as transfer all the programming from your old remote. Controls include a small LCD screen, and a fully backlit keypad for easy operation in darkened rooms.

I thought that if the Harmony 688 could do most of what is is advertised to do then it would be a success.
I can honestly say the remote is worth every penney since it did everything I wanted to control. When I had a problem, the help line was prompt and extremely helpful and fixed the lacking code of one remote the first time I called them. It truly does control seven of my AV devices with the right commands every time.

A MUST HAVE

I hardly ever give 5 stars to anything unless it is truly exceptional. I (like most of you, I am sure) have a ton of remotes for all of my components, which can become a pain when you are the only one who knows how to use them. The nice thing about this remote is the ease of setup and use. You can visit Logitech's website to take, what they call a "Test Drive" on configuring the remote. The configuration is done with the included software and a USB cable to connect with your PC. All you do is answer a few questions as to the make and model of your equipment and what type of switching needs to occur in order to watch a specific source. Basically, it runs macros easily by switching the video on your TV, audio on your receiver and takes control of your cable or satellite box as well as Tivo.
Trust me, once you get this remote, you'll wonder how you lived without it.

This remote is the end all, be all!!!

Like MANY others, I have a TON of remotes for every unit of my home theatre package. My receiver remote would never accept all of my components, so I always had to use 2 or more remotes, depending on what I was doing (listening to music, watching a DVD, etc.). I have a DirecTV/Tivo combo unit and I thought that this remote would NEVER allow me to use just one remote. I have been proven wrong. I can watch satellite TV, listen to CDs, watch a DVD, all without having to leave the sofa (unless you want to change out the DVD you are watching). Once you select your activity, the remotes powers off the other components not in use and powers on the components in use. It is GREAT! I have ALL of my TIVO functionality in this remote. I have removed ALL of the batteries from my other remotes and thrown them in a box........
