Our take on the Logitech® Harmony® Ultimate Remote

by Ralph Graves
Logitech

The Ultimate Remote

logitech harmony ultimate remote hub

The Logitech Harmony Ultimate is one of the most advanced remotes we've ever seen. Right from the start, you can tell this remote is different. Its ergonomic design fits easily into your hand. And its built-in motion sensor “wakes up” the remote when you pick it up — no more draining batteries while the remote's sitting on the coffee table.

Simple, intuitive control

The Ultimate remote doesn't overwhelm you with choices — it has a few simple control buttons and a color touchscreen. With a flick of your finger you can quickly swipe and scroll to navigate to your entertainment choices. You can even consolidate button functions. So, for example, by tapping a button, your Blu-ray player skips to the next chapter. But if you hold down that button, the player will fast-forward through the disc.

Is your setup complex? Not anymore. You can initiate a sequence of commands by tapping a single activity icon. Touch the “Watch TV” icon, for example, and the Harmony automatically assesses the status of your HDTV, receiver, cable or satellite box and makes sure they're all turned on with the proper settings. Presto! Your system's ready for TV viewing. The activity icons also provide easy access for family members and houseguests.

You can have multiple “Watch TV” settings for use with different cable boxes, or setups in different rooms. Select display icons for up to 50 of your favorite channels. And you can personalize and rearrange them as you want — right on the remote's touchscreen. To watch a channel, just touch the icon. The remote does the rest.

"Logitech has one-upped itself with the Harmony Ultimate."

"The Logitech Harmony Ultimate... is one of the most powerful universal remotes available, and one of the easiest to set up, thanks to the Harmony Web app and the Harmony Hub. The addition of Bluetooth control for game systems, smartphone and tablet remote control, and Philips Hue light control all make the remote more flexible than ever...."

"If you want the sleekest, most powerful universal remote available with as much flexibility as possible, the Harmony Ultimate is the controller to go with and is our Editors' Choice for universal remotes."

logitech harmony ultimate remote control

Easy Internet setup

You can control up to 15 devices with the Ultimate remote. The system works with over 5,000 brands and 225,000 entertainment devices, including lighting controls, game consoles, multi-room systems, and more. If it has a remote, you can probably control it with the Ultimate.

To get started, simply connect the Harmony Ultimate to your Mac or PC via the provided USB cable. At the Harmony website, just answer a few questions about your gear and how you use it. The proper command codes automatically download to your remote, and you're done.

The Harmony Hub

The handy low-profile hub comes with two infrared flashers so you can control components stored behind closed cabinet doors. It can relay commands from your remote, effectively extending the range of your controller.

The hub uses Bluetooth® to communicate with your PS3® and Wii® game consoles. It also uses IR (infrared) for Xbox 360 control. That eliminates the need for extra remotes, and frees up USB connections on your consoles. And the hub connects to your home Wi-Fi® network so you can use apps from mobile devices or cloud services.

You also have more control over your TV with the hub. It has a programmable sleep timer so your TV doesn't stay on all the time, wasting power. And it can monitor and manage family screen time, ensuring that children don't spend too much time in front of the screen.

logitech harmony ultimate remote app

The Harmony app can turn your smartphone into a second remote.

Smartphone remote control

With the free Harmony app, available from Apple iTunes® and the Android™ App store, you can turn your smartphone into a second personal remote. And the app has guided screen prompts to make setup even easier.

Features

Harmony Ultimate: The Logitech Harmony Ultimate is an activity-based IR/RF universal remote control that comes with an external IR/RF hub and two IR blasters that gives you control of IR components and Bluetooth game consoles, even in enclosed cabinets and behind walls. Using the myharmony.com web-based setup, you can control up to 15 different devices. Employing Smart State technology, the Harmony Ultimate keeps track of the devices it controls, which allows it to always know which devices are on and off, and what input each device is currently set to. The Harmony Ultimate Universal Remote brings the flexibility and convenience of touchscreen controls to your home entertainment system.

MyHarmony.com Setup: http://myharmony.com is the website where you configure the Harmony Ultimate. By connecting the Harmony Ultimate to your Mac or Windows computer via USB and following the instructions at myharmony.com, you can enter your device information, create activities and choose your favorites. With this information, myharmony.com will configure your Harmony Ultimate to control your entertainment system. During setup you will be prompted to enter your network password in order to connect the included Hub to your wireless home network, so you can use the Harmony App on your Apple iOS or Android device. Your can return to myharmony.com any time to update your configuration, although many settings can also be maintained directly on Harmony Ultimate as well. The myharmony.com website has a database of over 225,000 electronic devices from over 5,000 manufacturers. Your computer environment will need to meet the following system requirements:

  • Windows-based PC:
    • Microsoft Windows 8 (32/64-bit), 7 (32/64-bit), Vista (32-bit) or XP (32-bit)
    • USB type-A port
    • 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz); WEP 64/128, WPA Personal, or WPA2-AES)
    • Internet access (Internet Explorer 8+, Chrome 16+, Firefox 11+)
  • Intel-based Mac Computer:
    • Macintosh OS X 10.4.8 or later
    • USB type-A port
    • 802.11 b/g/n (2.4GHz); WEP 64/128, WPA Personal, or WPA2-AES)
    • Internet access (Firefox 11+, Safari 4+)
Note: The Harmony Ultimate must be connected to your Windows or Mac computer with the included USB cable to setup the remote through the myharmony.com website.

2.4" Color Touchscreen w/ Backlit Buttons: The Harmony Ultimate's 2.4" full-color touchscreen gives you easy swipe (up/down/left/right) and tap control of the remote's commands and activities. The numeric keypad is now located on the touchscreen. All the buttons are backlit and integrated tilt sensors automatically light up the touchscreen, so you can easily navigate your favorite entertainment in the dark. Gentle vibrations let you know when a screen button is pressed, so there's no need to take your eyes off whatever you're watching. You can even double the number of buttons by programming them for both short and long presses.

Control Hub w/ IR Blasters: The included Harmony Hub turns RF signals from the Harmony Ultimate remote control into IR and Bluetooth commands your home theater devices can understand. The Hub then send these same commands to the two included IR blasters which can be placed beside two hidden IR components or directly to your Bluetooth game console. You'll be able to control your IR audio/video components and Bluetooth game consoles (like PS3/Wii/Xbox 360), even if they are in an enclosed cabinet or behind a wall. In addition, you can set the Harmony Ultimate to control your exposed IR components (like your TV & Soundbar) directly without the use of the hub or IR blasters.

Note: The Harmony Ultimate's RF functionality only supports communication between the Ultimate remote and the included Hub for IR and Bluetooth control. It does not support direct control of other RF components.

Remote Commands: The Harmony Ultimate offers a variety of unique remote commands for your home entertainment system.

  • Activities: The Harmony Ultimate uses Activity Control to give you one-touch control of your entertainment system. You can use one of the touchscreen's Activity buttons to power on your TV, DVD player, A/V receiver, set all your inputs and even activate play without having to program time consuming macros. Once all of your equipment is "On", the buttons on the remote are also automatically configured for the appropriate operation.
  • Gestures: When an Activity is running, swiping up from the bottom of the touchscreen will display the gesture screen. Here, simple taps and swipes will perform functions related to the current Activity such as changing the volume, skipping forward or backward, pausing and playing, etc. Tap the button at the top of the screen to see what gestures are available for each Activity.
  • Favorites: Favorites are your favorite TV channels. Using the myharmony.com website you can select up to 50 favorite channels to display on the remote. Selecting a favorite channel will start your "Watch TV" activity, if it's not already started, and tune directly to that channel. Using the touchscreen, you can add, remove and reorder your favorite channels right on the remote.
  • System Off: One push of the off button turns off all the equipment in your system.
  • Help: If you have a problem completing an activity function, the help button will guide you through the fix using the interactive multi-color touchscreen display.

Harmony Remote App: Download the Harmony App from the Apple App Store or Google Play and turn your Apple iOS (5.0+) or Android (2.3.3+) device into a personal universal remote, when your Apple iOS or Android device is paired with the Harmony Ultimate's Hub via WiFi. Your Apple iOS/Android device will transmit WiFi commands to the Ultimate's Hub, which then turns these same commands into IR and Bluetooth for control of your IR audio/video components and Bluetooth game console. This app gives you control of your entertainment devices; including TV, DVR, Cable box, Receiver, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, and more. You also get 50 favorite channel icons and one-touch activity control.

Note: During the myharmony.com setup, you will need to enter your network password in order to connect the Ultimate's Hub to your home's WiFi network so it will communicate with your Apple iOS or Android device.

Philips Hue Light Control: The Harmony Ultimate allows you to set your Philips Hue lights (sold separately) to the perfect brightness and color for any activity, like watching your favorite TV program or enjoying a blockbuster movie.

Lithium-Ion Battery/Recharging Docking Station: The Harmony Ultimate includes an integrated rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, which provides up to 72 hours under normal use. Charging time is approximately 4 hours. The remote comes with a docking station and AC power adapter that keeps the remote fully charged.

Remote is fantastic!

Written By Best of the best universal remotes!, Houston, TX on Saturday, July 19, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If I were to design a remote with all of the features that I could possibly want, I wouldn't have even come close to what the Logitech Ultimate Remote can do and do it fast, easy to learn and program. Logitech does it all. Just tell the program what devices you want to include, answer a few easy questions, and Logitech does it! Easiest remote I've ever used!

Logitech Got It Right

Written By RegW, Keswick, VA on Wednesday, July 16, 2014

Logitech has finally produced a versatile universal remote that is simple to use. The key is its powerful online configuration software and good phone support if necessary. I've been waiting years for this, and it's finally here.
Pros:
Powerful functionality and ease of use and configuration.
Cons:
Pricey, but worth it.

The best remote ever!

Written By Hay Country, Des Moines, IA on Friday, July 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is exactly what we were looking for, it doesn't have interference issues when having all the devices in a closet, easy to setup with your PC, extremely robust, user friendly and it works 100% of the time. I would highly recommend this remote, we're thinking about buying one for our parents.
Pros:
The PC software user interface is really easy to use. Just by entering your make and model, the remote builds the activity/macro needed to turn on and off devices, set the inputs and knows the commands from the manufacturers remote. There are so many ways to customize this remote from your PC it's crazy (e.g., . change what the buttons on the remote do, reorder and add/remove the buttons on the remote screen,
Cons:
Sometimes the sync has issues but it's not a show stopper because it's easy to resolve by doing any or all of the following: power cycling the hub, connecting the hub and/or remote directly to the PC. It's pretty expensive but it was worth it for us to not have the interference issue like the MFR-250 Orsis remotes.

Simplifies a big system

Written By Rich, Chillicothe, IL on Saturday, July 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great choice for a family with complex AV and theater systems of up to 15 components. I was concerned that the 2 blasters would not be sufficient to reach all the components, but our system works fine.
Pros:
Does not require line of sight for the remote. Much simpler for family members to operate without understanding the system setup.
Cons:
Expensive. More blasters would be nice.

This a Harmony ultimate review. A bit complicated at first, aburt as you use the remote it becomes more useable. Called the hotline for support and was connected immmdiately, and the problem resoved instantly.
Pros:
useable behind closed cabinet doors. Once programed, easy to use.
Cons:
To change the TV, ot Sirius channels you have you go back to the home screen and repress the equipment you want to utilize. It then works great.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

we are seniors who wanted to simplify the way we use or entertainment center. I did reseach on line , and found Crutchfield who was also recommended by Logitech.to offer the best price, longest support , best service Never waited o be heard more than 2 minutes.
Pros:
being a senior and not technically savey, the support team walked me through the set up . They had the patience which I needed at times, the set up was succesful in less than one hour. Bravo to the support team.
Cons:
A few days after set up of my harmony ultimate my screen went blank., I called tech service who also could not get me started , after being told to hold the off button, and plug in the charger , which still did not work, I was told to return the remote to the seller for exchange. After I hung up ,I pluged the charger into another outlet and guess what? It started to charge ,So as you can see it was my fault, Therefore no Cons

Much Improved over the first generation

Written By Visiting Prof, Charlottesville, VA on Friday, May 02, 2014

Still Great Universal Remote - Much Improved from Older Generation
Pros:
One remote works my complete system of TV, Bose 321 Sound System, Blueray, and DVD player. The handset is much improved over the older models (especially the touchscreen) and gets you to where you want to be much faster. Works great when all components are enclosed inside a wooden cabinet.
Cons:
Still a bear to program! I paid to have it installed and it took them two trips to finish. The problem was the music stored on the Bose 321 system and getting the remote to pull up the library of that stored music on the TV screen. We eventually got everything working but set-up seemed to be more complicated than it should be. Also, as noted in some other reviews, the screen is very sensitive. If you place something over it, suddenly you can find yourself in a spontaneous surfing mode!

nice remote

Written By PaulE, Beckley, WV on Saturday, March 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set up and easy to use. The touch screen works great, and it's very responsive and sensitive. It can be a little frustrating touching the screen by accident and skipping forward or changing the channel, so if you're the type that likes to hold a remote for territorial purposes it might not be the right one for you.
Pros:
Appears well built, and the IR blasters work flawlessly. Can also be configured to not use the IR blasters and only transmit signals with just the remote, which is a nice choice to have depending on setup. The available smart phone app turns your phone into a remote through wifi, which is great for trolling the kids while they play xbox. I can switch it to cable from 3 states away in the middle of a vitally important COD split screen match. Good times!
Cons:
Touch screen is very sensitive so mistaken inputs can happen. Pricey for something that doesn't have a means to replace the battery.

Harmony Ultimae

Written By Brad, Charleston, SC on Friday, March 07, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received the Harmony Ultimate a few weeks ago and was excited to put its capabilities to the test. I purchased this remote with the goal being to consolidate all living room remotes into one remote while having my components hidden behind cabinet doors. The remote works very basic functions and does allow me to "watch tv" and use only one remote. However, it does not allow me to set up a "watch movie" activity that involves digging deeper into my receiver to manage sound settings b/w TV and AVR. To do that, I have to use my Denon remote (strike one). Next I wanted to teach the Harmony to learn the Denon's Zone-2 button, which was not a compatible learning function so I have to use my Denon remote for that (strike two). Last I wanted to set up my appleTV and the Harmony will not wake up appleTV so I have to use my appleTV remote for that (strike three). The Harmony allows limited functionality and although it is a fancy looking remote, IMO, it is limited in its ability to truly take the place of all factory remotes. BTW, it will also not learn additional RF functions so for anyone also wanting to control their fire place with the Harmony, I can tell you that you will be disappointed there as well.
Pros:
Limited consolidation of remotes and allows you to hide components. Another Pro, Crutchfield reps are always there to kindly assist.
Cons:
Abilities are very basic resulting in the need to keep all those other remotes nearby.

Logitech® Harmony® Ultimate Remote

Written By Eoghan27, Lusby, MD on Wednesday, January 29, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first Harmony remote that actually really works well. I have tried several others over the years, but I am finally impressed with this unit (of course, it comes at a higher price point). The remote itself can be configured per device to send out IR signals, but that is not the default configuration. Uses the a wireless signal via your home wifi network to communicate to the wireless base station. So the actual remote can be used anywhere in the house to communicate to the base station.
Pros:
Very easy to program via the website, iPad, iPhone. Didn't even have to use either of the two transmitters, only needed the base station. Seems to send out quite a large IR blast radius. Wireless works well, remote is not over crowded with useless buttons and they are all changeable/programmable to your specific environment. Touch screen works well.
Cons:
Cost is high. Some of the buttons are small and close to the touchscreen, so you can mis-press a button. At least the remote vibrates each time you press a button so you know that you have pressed something.

User Friendly Universal Remote

Written By Pandrade, Doylestown, PA on Friday, January 10, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Harmony Ultimate Universal Remote overall is an extremely powerful little remote. The equipment we own is a Sony LEDTV, a Denon AVR-2312ci, a Panasonic Blu-Ray player, Apple TV and Hargray Cable Box and each one comes with its own remote which got to be excessively complicated. So we invested in the Harmony and have been extremely satisfied. The remote and it's software online is very user friendly and no programming numbers are required, just model numbers and the software does the rest. We did run into some problems with the Apple TV and the Denon's Zone 2 for outdoor speakers, but after going to the support page and user support, we found all the fixes we needed. The remote, once programmed (which took us a couple of hours) is very straight forward and easy to customize. I would recommend this remote to just about anyone who asked me. I would warn them about about the apple TV bugs and additional Zones, but that there are fixes for just about everything. The other thing we love is that it's Wifi enabled as well, so it can update via the internet when we customize from the laptop.
Pros:
Wifi Enabled, RF capable, Easy Software, amazingly user friendly interface, just about 100% perfect.
Cons:
The only problems I have with it is that it's expensive compared with Harmony Smart Control package, and that the rechargeable battery is not replaceable. It definitely takes a large wad of time to set up an intricate home theater system, so make sure you set aside time to program and wait.

Better than expected

Written By N8L, Houston, TX on Friday, December 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've used Harmony for about 8 years and I always new I'd get another when that one finally died. It did, and now I needed RF capability for hidden devices.

The remote and base unit with IR blaster work great to control hidden equipment in 2 locations, with one blaster remaining outside. You can only connect 2 blaster to the base unit. Contrary to what I was told by a Crutchfield sales rep, the base unit DOES emit IR signals, so it can be one of the hidden emitters. But the remote does not seem to emit IR, or at least not the full set of signals. I wanted to have the blasters and the base unit in 3 separate, hidden cabinets and use the remote for my television, but the remote would not turn on/off the TV without the aid of a blaster. Need to further investigate that. Also, the iPhone app doesn't work reliably, kind of hit or miss.

Can't give it 5 stars because I believe there are problems that can/should be fixed, but I still think it's the best of what's available on the market.
Pros:
Very easy to program, great touch screen, ability to control hidden devices, Help function truly provides Harmony to the house
Cons:

Awful Remote. Continually Gets Worse

Written By rdCLE, Cleveland, OH on Saturday, November 30, 2013

This is the first time I've ever felt compelled to take time out of my day to go online and review a product, but this is such an awful product it had to be done. This is an absolutely horrible remote and would HIGHLY recommend getting ANY other remote or just using a multiple remote approach instead of this piece of junk.

Bought the remote and had it programmed by my installer. Worked well the first day or so and then it continually got worse. Had installer come out and it worked well for a day and got progressively worse. I have a Smart TV, Receiver, DVD Player and Cable Box programmed into the remote.

You would think that for the cost it would switch between these devices effortlessly, but AT BEST it's a 50/50 chance that it will switch correctly. What usually happens is you need to push the "Help" button and then answer a couple questions to resolve the problem. You may be thinking "that doesn't seem that bad" ... wait until you do it a couple hundred times and then tell me what you think.

After a couple weeks the Play, Stop, Fast Forward, Rewind, Pause buttons at the top have become gradually less and less responsive. Sometimes you will hit Fast Forward and then the remote loses responsiveness altogether. You have to hit the "Help" button, answer the questions, and then rewind forever to try and find your spot.

For a piece of equipment that is supposed to make your life easier and more efficient, it seems to continually find new ways to just make it more difficult.

So far, so good!

Written By HausMusic, Newburyport, MA on Sunday, November 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed my first 'Ultimate' for a customer after years of replacing legacy URCs with other Harmony remotes and am very pleased with the RF-to-Hub-to-component communication. Time will tell, of course, but even with the Harmony app on his iPod touch, he was able to easily toggle between activities - though with a longer delay than with the Logitech remote itself - but the TV, cable box, and receiver all responded as intended. My one criticism - hence the 4 stars - is that the Hub only has 2 jacks for IR blasters and they no longer provide individual, adherable IR blasters so I had to do some splicing and wiring to use old ones because the limited space in the media closet would not accomodate the newer 'broadcast' blasters. On the flipside, setup via myharmony.com is much more straight-forward than via the old desktop software and, when I mis-programmed a receiver input for one of the activities, I was able to fix it permanently via the remote & hub without having to connect either of those to the computer. Can't wait to upgrade from my own 890 Pro!
Pros:
RF hub signal/connectivity is much stronger than previous versions; Device and Activity setup is much more simple via myharmony.com than via previous Logitech desktop software; iOS/Android app is a big bonus - arguably easier to use than the screens on the remote itself.
Cons:
The package does not include individual or dual IR blasters tha can adhere to components - only the 'broadcast' blasters intended for shelf placement which may not accomodate tight media closets/enclosures; there are no numbers on the remote control itself so, to choose specific channels, requires navigation to the numbers screen on either the remote control or the app.

The Logitech is super easy to set-up, a novice can easily navigate the Logitech configuration web page; I had the unit set up in less than 15 mins.RF controlling components in a closet, Receiver, Plasma HDTV, Blu-Ray, Cable Box and Sony PS. Feels comfortable in the palm and I like the slight vibration that confirms it accepted the command. The touchscreen works great despite some ratings I read. Remote can also be easily customized without plugging back into a computer. Highly recommended.
Pros:
Easy & Fast Set-Up Intuitive software and Logitech webpage Great ergonomics (button placement and easy to hold securely) Good looks / quality.
Cons:
None.

Awesome and best remote for all house!

I have an older Harmony remote and I've always liked it. When I got a TV for another room, I decided to replace the main TV remote with a new one. Logitech has definitely made some improvements worth saying. The charging cradle is a more positive connection. The interface is easy and good. They've updated the compatible devices and I can get everything to work wonderfully!
Pros:
New look. Charging cradle. Updated compatible devices, family can use it!
Cons:
I wish it was less expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I have spent several hours trying to make this remote work the way I expect. Its coming around. Expect alot of trial and error if you have more than a basic setup. Im using to control,a projector,tv,avr, and ps3, all through an htpc,JRiver, setup. Have used a harmony one for years.

Pros:
It will eventually do what you want, online forum support
Cons:
Cost justification to myself, needs more user control for what shows on screen, what works good one day, may not the next.

Worth the Money

Written By Frank, Eagan, MN on Saturday, August 10, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been looking for a good universal remote for awhile, but I needed the RF feature to control my devices stored in a cabinet, which limited my selections. Another must have was a good tablet/smartphone app. This is the first/only product I was able to find that has an App that stays in sync with the physical remote, which allows me to control all my devices from anywhere in the house. Why is this a nice feature? If I'm heading downstairs for a movie, I can turn the whole system on from my smartphone so the projector has time to warm up before I get there. Also, if my kids leave everything turned on I can turn it all off with one button from the upper level and save myself 32 stairs down and 32 stairs up.

For a 1st time Harmony owner, I thought the initial setup was very intuitive and easy. Aside from the standard functions (Watch TV, Watch a Movie, etc.) I was able to program a couple macros. I created a Watch Netflix macro to power on all devices, launch the streaming apps function of my Blu-Ray player and launch Netflix. I also created a Watch 3D Movie Macro that is similar to Watch a Movie, but has added steps to navigate through the menus on my AV receiver to turn off the dual monitor out function on power up and turn it back on during power down. For some reason my AV receiver will not output 3D when using the dual output feature. Overall I've been very pleased, but do have a couple suggested improvements (see cons below)
Pros:
Nice form factor; Intuitive setup and use; RF & Bluetooth radios; App control
Cons:
Need to have ability to leave unused devices powered on, when switching between functions. Example: The new WiiU console has a nice feature that allows gameplay to continue on the gamepad, without having to use the TV. If my son is playing a game on the big screen it will power off when I hit "Watch TV". The only other issue I've encountered is the remote frequently freezes up when powering on the WiiU. My guess is the remote is having issues establishing a Bluetooth connection.

Written By Chris, Saratoga Springs, NY on Monday, August 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a welcome replacement for my Harmony Touch as they seemed to have taken a step back with the Touch, this new Ultimate fixes it and then some. Some features that the older Touch didn't have that this new Ultimate did was better menu scrolling, accelerometer to sense when you pick it up now, better battery life, vibration with on-screen key presses and easier customization. The hub also adds so much in terms of using your iphone, ipad or Android hardware just like a remote and software updates are now easier to do Over-The-Air too. This one is a keeper !
Pros:
Too many to list
Cons:
Could be a little bit cheaper, but worth it for all the things it includes.

Upgraded to this remote from the Harmony One for the ability to control my equipment with the cabinet doors closed. It works great so far! The Favorite Channels feature is a bit awkward, haven't really invested the time to set it up. It is nice to be able to control my PS3 without the dedicated Logitech adapter I had before. The play/rewind/etc buttons are very small and I'm not sure why they are at the top of the remote. I have downloaded the phone app but haven't really played with it yet. I'm glad the Logitech software finally understands that you might one more than one of their remotes.
Pros:
Works through the cabinet Nice charging station IR boasters work well Good setup software
Cons:
Very expensive Poor buttons on the remote Favorite channels interface is awkward

Fabulous remote - fairly easy to set-up but later one find it has much more depth/features than one expected. Thus it becomes somewhat more complex if in fact you need or must drill down for more exacting or specific commands. Something for everyone.
Pros:

Cons:

The best way for me to describe the remote is it does everything I want it to do perfectly. I wanted one remote that could turn on my Wii or Playstation or run my surround sound system and TV with just one push of a button. The other big thing for me was having a remote that anyone could pick up and be able to use it without having a PhD. I do have to say I really love being able to use my iphone to run all systems also. A very nice plus.

Pros:
Everything works as advertised
Cons:
Wish the back side of the remote was flat. It can roll off of a arm rest once in awhile.. Not a big deal.

Very sleek design, feels great in hand. Very responsive - doesn't jump multiple channels when using guide. Our cabinet and components are in a separate room and it transmits perfectly. This is our 3rd type of Harmony Logitech remote and it really is the best! Also love having a "remote" loaded loaded on our iPhones.
Pros:
Responsive, easy to program, isn't jumpy.
Cons:
We required a level II tech to help set up since we ask the remote to do so much.

Solid remote, but not perfect

Written By Tripper, McKinney, Texas on Friday, June 28, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The good...I like the internet interface and the ease of adding your gear and setting up activities. The touch screen works well and the layout is logical. My only issue is not being able to insert a pause. For example, the OPPO BD 105 requires you to scroll down to the input selection you want...the remote 'works' so fast that it rarely ever gets where I want it to go. This is not an issue on gear that has a direct link to an input, such as on my Denon Receiver. But on the Oppo it requires using the device input select function to get where you need to go.
Pros:
Easy to set up, good touchscreen, generally intuitive.
Cons:
No 'delay' option that would help with some gear.

Harmony Finally Gets It Right

Written By AJC, Oakland, CA on Wednesday, June 26, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After suffering through many universal remotes I've finally found peace with the Harmony Ultimate. Easy to set up and more importantly easy to update, I've found inner remote peace. I had been previously using the Harmony 900 which also utilized the hub system, but it was kludgy, requiring special programming and delays to make sure everything powered up in the right sequence. In addition it required a separate dedicated blaster for the PS3. No such issues here, the remote is Bluetooth enabled so that takes care of the PS3 issue. The IR blasters are far more responsive and accurate. Harmony also does a much better job with the online configuration, and updating. I can program individual favorite channels with ease and program the channel icon. Input changes are quick and efficient DirecTV to AppleTV is almost like changing channels compared to the finger crossing roulette with the former remote. My installer couldn't fathom why I rather have this as opposed to the proprietary programmed URC, easy decision there, I didn't need him for changes and Harmony is way in front of the curve from a feature set as opposed to URC's dated technology. Last, I love that I can update firmware via my network and being tied to my computer and bad software is a thing of the past. Four Stars instead of five due to the fact that no remote layout can be perfect. If I could individually configure the hard buttons we'd have 5 of 5!
Pros:
Easy to program and update! Nice UI & feature sets around channel selection and input changes! IR blasters dramatically improved and reliable.
Cons:
Can't reprogram hard buttons.

very easy to set up; on-line wizard and device detection is fantastic; setting up activities makes the user interface simple for someone (non-technical) to control multiple devices. Only thing left to do is to find a method for a remote IR to control big screen TV which is on a different floor (not necessarily a fault of this remote but was something we had with our RTI remote that we replaced with this one; seems we might need to contact technical support that was included with the purchase!)

Nice Remote

Written By Mike D, Leesburg, VA on Monday, June 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my 5th Harmony remote and first of the new breed of touchscreen remotes. The buttons on the remote are simplified and the interface on the Harmony software has changed as well. I've had years and years of experience with the older "dogbone" remotes and this one does take a little getting used to. I'm still trying to figure out how to customize the screen layout etc within the software but overall it works well. The phone app that is available does not work very well and needs to have allot more development attention before it's ready for primetime. If you are looking to use your iPad or Android as a new remote I would look elsewhere.
Pros:
Harmony Software Ergo Design
Cons:
Finding where to customize things is difficult Phone application leaves a lot to be desired

Excellent remote, but not perfect. Things I like: nice size, feels good in the hand, has dedicated DVR button, touch screen is adequate (but is definitely not designed by Apple), easy setup and charging station is nice. Don't like: button placement for Play, Stop, FF, REW and Pause is awkward. Occasionally there is a long delay when using FF. I went from a Harmony 900 to this one and there are some improvements; however, the H900 'feels' higher quality and button placement is better. In my opinion, not worth upgrading from the Harmony 900 to the Harmony Ultimate. Overall, I would highly recommend this product.

Vast Improvement!

I have had several previous Harmony remotes, most recently the 900 which worked but had a somewhat cumbersome touchscreen and slow response time. The Harmony Ultimate is a vast improvement, the touch screen actually works more like a smart phone and has some intuitive features that make it well worth its price. I am very happy with this purchase!

Logitech Harmony Ultimate

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent remote that is simple to program! I replaced a Universal MX-450 remote which had died and we had purchased from the Home Theater Company which set up our system. The MX-450 was very good as well although we had to pay $100 plus to the home theater company to reprogram the remote each time we bought a new piece of equipment.

The Harmony Ultimate had every one of our components in each data base and everything worked perfectly after set up. I was concerned that it only has two emitters as I had four before but it turns out I didn't use any as the blaster controls everything perfectly. We currently have a Yamaha receiver, a Cisco cable box, a Samsung TV, X-Box, Play Station 3, Wii, VCR/DVD combo, Apple TV and a Sony Blu-ray player. The Harmony Ultimate can even switch between the DVD and VCR which the MX-450 could not. My wife and kids are the most happy as all they have to do is touch what they want to do, watch TV, play X-Box, watch Netflix on the Apple TV, etc. I like it because I can program it every time we switch or add a component.
Pros:
Easy to program Easy to use Very Attractive

Cost Battery Life

Best Harmony Yet

Written By Dan P, Charlotte, NC on Wednesday, June 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a replacement for a Universal MX-450 remote. Programming this Harmony was a breeze. Instead of their old PC software program you run from the computer, this uses a new web based program that is much more responsive. It took me about 30 minutes to setup my devices, do a few customizations and try it out. There are two reasons I gave it four and not five stars. One is that the plug for the IR emitters is not the industry standard size which required me to replace and reroute the cables of my existing emitters with the new ones. If you're not changing from another system this wont be an issue. Also there are only 2 emitter ports, my Universal system had 4. Fortunately the IR blaster is very powerful and I only needed one emitter to reach my AppleTV which is far back on my equipment rack.

The second reason is that this unit appears to be rather heat sensitive. I had it set on top of my Bluray player which doesn't get very warm, at least compared to the DVR or AV receiver. After about an hour I got a message on the remote that it could not reach the Hub. The status LED was red and a reset did not help. It felt warm so I unplugged it for a few minutes to cool. It worked fine and I moved it to a cooler spot on my rack. Some have complained about the transport buttons being above the LCD. This isn't a problem. The gesture functions on the LCD work perfectly to skip/rew/play/pause and control volume. I hardly use the top buttons at all. Great job with this one Logitech!
Pros:
Easy to program and setup Small and lightweight Touchscreen with gesture controls Strong IR blaster on Hub unit Wife found it very easy to use Can make some customizations on remote without he PC software Fast response to button presses Seems to allow custom macros Support of wide range of products, even home automation controls Apple iPod/iPhone app works nicely Looks good
Cons:
Hub seems to be overly sensitive to heat Non-standard IR blaster plug size Supports only two IR blasters (makes the point above a non-issue since it comes with two blasters) Questionable range based on Bluetooth communication between remote and Hub

like a lot of people these days, i researched this thing to death. originally, i had ordered the logitech 1100, but when i learned it couldn't control the phillips 'hue' lighting system, i exchanged it for the ultimate. set-up was prett simple, particularly for a tech-moron like me. another thing i like about the ultimate over the 1100 is that the 1100 is just way too big. too showy. the ultimate is a killer universal remote and i would definitely suggest this to a friend...

Is there a delay when changing channels? [ John  May 28, 2014 ]
6 answers
  • John, I have a CableCard in a TiVo and find no noticeable delay using the Logitech Harmony. Thanks, Kevin [ KEVIN   May 29, 2014 ]
  • Yes, there is often a delay but I believe it is based on my cable box (I have comcast), not the remote. It is especially noticeable when I switch between an HD and non HD channel. [ GLENN E   May 29, 2014 ]
  • No. [ MILTON B   May 29, 2014 ]
  • No - I don't have any appreciable delay when using the channel +/- button. It is not instantaneous and takes about 1 second to complete the change. Are you sending the signal through another (controlling) electronic device prior to getting it to the TV like a sound bar, DVD, Stereo Receiver??? If so, this may add to your signal delay.... [ STEVEN   May 29, 2014 ]
  • Yes you can add delays or subtract delay times. Or when you enter the Name and model number of the device on your computer will inter the Corect delay time for you. Truly a great remote [ ALVIN   May 29, 2014 ]
  • The delay isn't any longer than normal for me with DirecTv. Sometimes I have to hit the "favorite" channel button twice, but not very often. Otherwise it works great. [ ADAM L   May 29, 2014 ]
How do the IR blasters work in cabinets with IR-controlled devices on separate shelves? My entertainment center has two separate cabinets with two shelves in each. One cabinet only has IR-controlled devices on one shelf. The other has IR-controlled devices on separate shelves. Both cabinets have glass doors. Does the IR blaster commands reflect off the glass to control the devices on the shelf without an IR blaster or is an IR blaster needed for each shelf? Thanks in advance for any and all guidance! [ swilson2k  May 20, 2014 ]

  • I do not know if the glass reflects or not. I would doubt it though. My receiver is in a another room altogether and this remote goes through the wall just fine. I would not worry about the glass this remote is awesome !! [ DIANNA   May 21, 2014 ]
  • I have a similar set up as you except for the cabinet doors which are solid wood. The remote comes with the blaster and if I recall at least two other smaller units to address the concern of equipment on different shelves or in different cabinets (my setup). My Ultimate works great and I like the Ultimate much more than my old 1000 which did not survive being throw across a room and not being caught. Cannot speak to the glass issue. If I could go back in time with the opportunity to change my decision, I would not; I would purchase the Ultiimate again. Good luck. [ ARTHUR J   May 21, 2014 ]
  • I have a similar cabinet situation and have the two IR Blasters with each one on a separate shelve. The Hub is also an IR Blaster which handles the third shelf. There is a forth component to deal with, however, which is the television itself. In my current configuration, I handle the television using the IR on/off signal that is emitted from the remote. That means that I have to point the Harmony Ultimate remote toward the television to power it on or off. Otherwise, the Hub responds to the remote's RF signaling and converts it to IR and broadcasts it out throughout the IR Blasters. Logitech had been offering an alternative to the IR Blaster that had four IR emitters, but I was unable to find it on their updated website. It plugs into one of the IR Blaster jacks and has four wires that can be run to as many components. Each emitter is designed to be applied over the IR receiver eye on each component. I bought a pair of these emitters, so can handle up to 8 devices, but have not yet installed them, so cannot report on how well they work. Overall, the Harmony Ultimate is a great product and I'm very happy with its ease of use and performance. Hope this helps. Good luck. [ WILLIAM   May 21, 2014 ]
  • I don't have glass in front of my IR components but I do use one blaster for more than one component. I would imagine if you place the blaster between the two you should have no problem. [ STEVEN   May 21, 2014 ]
How many Televisions can I program and control with this remote? [ eofferdahl  Feb 04, 2014 ]

  • The problem with setting up two TVs is that you cannot use them at the same time because in order for the activities on TV 1 to switch, they must power units off. The only way this will work is if they are not being used simultaneously. [ dinah   Jul 03, 2014 ]
  • I have two but you might be able to do even more than that it depends on how many activities you setup you can run several activities [ JON   Feb 05, 2014 ]

  • It should. Web search 'Harmony Remote'. Select 'logitech.-com/en-us/universal-remotes'. Under 'DIGITAL HOME' banner, select Support. On the right, select 'Search for your device'. Enter Device type, Manufacturer, and Model Number, and it will report compatibility. [ TIMOTHY D   Feb 05, 2014 ]
