Features

Overview: A relay is simply an electrically activated switch. Relays are used in a wide variety of automotive applications. This relay is composed of three contacts (terminals #30, #87A, and #87). Activating this relay is done with the coil (terminals #85 and #86). For auto security applications there are numerous features which require the use of a relay such as Starter Kill, Circuit Isolation, Trigger Inversion, and Trunk Release. The 8617 relay is capable of handling 40A maximum across its normally open contacts and 30A maximum across its normally closed contacts.

Q
Does this have a built in diode? If not, what size diode does it take?

This relay does not have a diode built into it. Diodes and the one to use will vary depending on what is needed to make the new gear work. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get help selecting the right gear

Q
Will this work to remote turn on 2 amps? Just installed my Kenwood head unit but only have 1 remote wire, unsure how to connect 2 remote wires from 2 amps to head units single remote wire

I initially purchased this relay to turn on 3 amps from the remote out from the head unit. I was told that if I ran the remote wire from my head unit directly to 3 amps it could possibly damage my head unit so I purchased the relay. The plan was to run that head unit remote out to the relay and then Run 3 remote outs from the relay to the amps. I ended up not having to use this because I purchased the audio control dm810dsp from Crutchfield and my local shop said the remote output from the dsp can turn on my 3 amps because it 'boosts' the remote signal strength. I was told Some line output converters and dsps essentially do what a relay does. There are many good videos out there regarding relays and wiring them, however if you are purchasing a dsp or loc, check and see if you really need the relay. I am not allowed to send the links to the videos on here. I would also talk to crutchfield and ask them, explain what system to have or are going to get, and if you are going to run lights or other accessories. Check with crutchfield as I am not and expert but you should be able to run your head unit remote out into one amp, then daisy chain to the second amp. 2 amps should not hurt your head unit. Please check with crutchfield first.

A relay, in conjunction with something like a Fuse Block (e.g Blue Sea Systems ATC Fuse Block) will allow you to provide power to multiple devices. In theory, you would connect one end of the relay directly to the battery and the other to the Fuse block. Connect the relay to ground. The relay has a connection for a switch, in this case your single remote wire. When the remote wire triggers, it allows power to pass from the battery, through the relay, and to the fuse block. When the remote wire is off, the connection is closed and thus no power is sent to the fuse block. The relay should have specific instructions and to where you need to connect the battery, ground, etc. Also not that you can also use the fuse block to power DSPs and LOCs. Just be sure to fuse everything properly. Hope this helps.
