SIRIUS

Our take on the SIRIUS SIR-GM1

If the factory stereo in your 2003-up General Motors vehicle is satellite radio-ready, you now have the option of adding a SIRIUS radio.

This package includes everything that's necessary for you to play SIRIUS through your compatible factory stereo: a SIRIUS radio, a roof-mount antenna, and the adapter cable that connects the radio to your stereo.

You can mount the compact radio easily in a convenient spot behind the dash. The adapter cable hooks up to the radio at one end, and to your factory stereo at the other, providing all signal and power connections. The magnetic antenna mounts firmly on your vehicle's roof, and connects to the satellite radio. An extra connection lets you keep a factory (or factory-compatible) CD changer connected to the system.

Note: Your in-dash stereo must be have the factory satellite radio option to work with this SIRIUS package. Please enter your vehicle information or call a Sales Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to check compatibility. If you're not sure whether or not your factory stereo is satellite radio-ready, ask your local dealership. A SIRIUS subscription is also required.

Features

Overview: The SIR-GM1 is a Sirius Satellite Radio tuner that is compatible with select 2003-2008 General Motors vehicles. The package includes the proper interface cables and a magnetic Sirius antenna. In addition to the tuner, a subscription to Sirius Satellite Radio programming is also required.

Compatibility: The SIR-GM1 is designed to be compatible with select headunits from 2003-2008 GM vehicles that operate on the Class-2 bus. In many cases, the tuner can replace the factory XM Satellite tuner. It is also compatible with some systems that support Satellite Radio operation, but did not come with a tuner from the factory. Compatible headunit types include CD only, CD + Cassette, and 6-CD changer headunits, as well as Touch Screen and Non-Touch Screen monitor headunits. The factory radios in the majority of the compatible vehicles must have a "BAND" button. In some cases, the radio must have a factory satellite connection (noted by an asterisk in the chart below). The SIR-GM1 is compatible with most additional factory audio accessories that might be included, such as Rear Seat Audio Control Center, Rear Seat Entertainment (DVD/Monitor) System, Heads-up Display, and Steering Wheel controls.

Install in 2003 Suburban

Written By lbdaggett, Long Beach, CA on Wednesday, August 03, 2011

As petroboy43 noted, please read all the reviews. The hardest part of install of the unit behind the dash. My vehicle was not an original XM vehicle, and mounting behind the glove box is impossible with the supplied T-Wires. I was able to place it in the dash below the center venting duct and behind the storage cubby directly below. That alone took a bit more than an hour. The rest was simple. Tapped into 12V power supply in center console, which is very easy to access. Being a suburban, I needed every inch of the antennae wire. Mounted it on rear of roof, and ran wire behind third break light and used existing grommet to run wire into headliner. Plastic trim pieces come apart easy. Fired up first time, activated no problem. Only complaint is that the antennae does not work as well as my other newer vehicle's factory sirius set up.

2005 Rendezvous with Factory Stereo

Written By Dayve, Bedford, Ohio on Tuesday, February 03, 2009

This was an easy install and took about an hour to complete. I knew in advance about the short t-cable and took that into account before I started. The antenna was mounted on the rear and run down the passenger side to be hidden in the sill trim and the unit itself was placed just below the center console airducts and tie wrapped securely to the passenger side console. The power and ground I picked up in the lower driver's footwell when I tapped into the cigarette lighter. The unit fired right up and displayed correctly on the display. I was able to retain the steeringwheel controls which was useful because of the safety feature and my wife now has Sirius again.( I'm still her Hero!)I suggest that you look at the length of the cable and determine where you're going to put the unit before you start, saves loads of time. Service was great as always with Crutchfield even though they were out of stock after I ordered and let me know right away. This is definitely the best and cheapest way to gain factory Sirius in your GM vehicle.

2003 GMC Sierra ext cab

Written By hurst7t9, Scranton, PA on Saturday, December 13, 2008

The biggest help was the other reviews on this board. Installation of the antenna and SIRGM1 took about 3 hours. Antenna mounted on roof and wired through third brake light, across headliner to the pass rear pillar, down pillar under edge of carpet and up beind glove box. Since I had the resources and I knew about the T harness being too short, I made the T harness about 12 inches longer. Perfect length. Mounted the SIRGM1 using three of the supplied screws to the firewall, just above a wire that is routed on the firewall. Removed radio, routed wiring harness behind the dash to the radio. Plugged blue connector into radio, plugged in antenna and main radio harness. Tapped into cigarette lighter power and ground for SIRGM1 power and ground. T harness plug was very difficult to plug in and took about 1.5 hours to make T harness longer. If it wasn't for those two things I would have given it 5 out of 5 stars. Works perfectly, like it was always there.

Worth the price and effort for Factory look

Written By Vinchenzo, NJ on Monday, March 31, 2008

pros

1) Price is reasonable
2) sound is better than i expected. i dont have bose radio, and i was never happy with over the air sound quality for fm. this unit is just as good if not a bit better. I would say the quality is better than a plug and play unit.
3) Can't beat the factory look
4) Functions well with factory radio (head unit)

Cons

1) installation in not simple
a) directions that came with unit were not great
aa) they did not suggest or even adress a mounting location
bb) they do not tell you you need to go through a series of steps to reset the radio so it can recognize the new tuner
cc) they dont mention that with the t harness unless you have another accesory, you will not need to use all three connectors
b) the t- harness that comes with the unit (this is the one you will use if your vehicle did not come with xm from the factory) is too short.
c) tech help, was not great. I have used them for previous installs any they were great. this time, i spoke with three different techs and received conflicting information. (one insisted that i needed to use all the inputs on the t harness, even though i was not using any accesories. another failed to mention i needed to rest the radio

overall good value and worth the effort

SIR-GM1 06 Sierra 2500 bose/6chngr/xm

Written By Dan, Phx, Az on Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Installation wasn't slightly difficult. Used the knowledge from other reviews. Bracket for the XM module had the screws threaded from the reverse side. Very difficult to get them undone in the small space. I reversed the screws in the bracket once assembled to ease the reinstallation of the bracket with sirius unit ziptied to it. ------------------------------------------
As fo the function of the unit, there is a noticeable blank screen until the unit connects. Not sure of the reason, but it has a 3-4 second pause before the factory radio displays anything. This only happens when the sir unit was the last active when powered off then on.
Overall the unit performs very well. No signal strength issues.

Service Great...Reception poor on Corvette

Written By Daniel, West Palm Beach FL on Sunday, February 03, 2008

I switched out the factory XM receiver for the SIR-GM1. The installation was as easy as could be. The reception, however leaves much to be desired. I gathered from other audio websites that the issue is the fact that the Corvette is not a metal-bodied car. The car acts as part of the antenna.

I do love Sirius service, but I will continue to work at getting better recpetion so the music does not cut out. I had the service in my Mustang, and the reception was much better. I used the SIR-KEN1 for that installation.

Overall I would do it again, as the talk stations are not that bad, but the music does suffer from dropouts.

I gave this a 4 star rating because the equipment works as advertised, but the car makes reception difficult.

SIR GM-1

Written By jvnova67, central Mass on Sunday, January 06, 2008

The t-harness definately isn't long enough.Installation was a little more challenging than I thought! There were two connections on my stock 2003 Chevy Silverado radio. One of which I disconnected upon radio removal and the other was empty. The empty one is for the bus-2 communication. After careful reading of the installation literature, it would appear as though a factory connection from the vehicle side needs to be plugged into the t-harness.Apparently this is not needed on my application. Some clarification through tech-support pointed me in the right direction.I feel the installation instructions could have been more specific.

OK for the money

Written By Jim, Bel Air, MD on Thursday, November 29, 2007

As many others have said, the T harness just isn't long enough. Stock satellite tuner location is behind the glove box in my Olds Alero. T Harness is about 3 inches too short to mount there. It's rigged up behind the climate controls with some zip ties and double back sticky tape. Other than that, the installation was easy with most of the time routing the antenna wire under trim. Power was supplied through the auxillary power point next to the glove box.

I would only rate the signal as so-so. I'll loose signal for a good 5 or 6 seconds if I drive by some tall trees. The stock Sirius in my Jeep Grand Cherokee has never lost signal as long as I was moving.

Good alternative to plug and play systems if you live in an area without bridges, or trees, or hills.

2004 Impala

Written By Intrepid1, Baltimore, Md. on Thursday, October 11, 2007

Install behind the dash is impossible. After removing radio and connecting the T-Harness, I let it through a hole to the right of the Radio and down to the back of the cubby hole that sits beneath the climate controls. The supplied power harness is not long enough to reach the battery through the firewall so I got a hot connection in the passenger fuse box. The Sir-GM1 is strapped behind the cubby hole out of sight and activated. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because the T-Harness lenght is too short to place the tuner under the seat. My antennae that has a 21ft. cable is too short to reach the the back roof from its present location, but would reach if could install tuner under seat. The tuner works great otherwise. Looking for a longer T-Harness, COME ON Sirius!
