SIRIUS

Our take on the SIRIUS Sportster 4

Sports fans, you can keep up with all of the great play-by-play action on SIRIUS with the Sportster 4 plug-and-play satellite radio. It lets you pause and rewind live broadcasts, so you'll never miss a second of the big game. It also has some great features that'll enhance coverage of your favorite teams, and it delivers the rest of SIRIUS's peerless entertainment options.

To make sure you're on top of your favorite teams, program Game Alert to let you know whenever your favorite NFL, NBA, NHL, and college team is about to take the field. With NFL broadcasts, you can even choose whether you want to listen to the home or away announcers.

The Sportster 4 automatically records the last 44 minutes of the channel you're listening to. Just hit the Rewind button to get an instant replay of the game-winning touchdown, or press Pause if, say, you're interrupted by a phone call. The 44-minute memory clears every time you change the channel or turn the Sportster 4 off. And if you're driving to a game, you can program the front-panel Jump button to go directly to your SIRIUS traffic and weather channel to get traffic updates.

Car accessories
This package includes the car accessories you'll need to play the radio over your vehicle's in-dash stereo. The docking station, which holds the Sportster 4 in your car, features a suction-cup mount that'll attach to any reasonably flat glass surface. A car power adapter and a roof-mount antenna round out the package.

The Sportster 4's built-in wireless FM transmitter broadcasts straight to your vehicle's FM stereo.* A remote control is also included, so your passengers can switch channels while you drive.

Other options
To listen to the Sportster 4 over your home stereo, pick up the optional home accessory kit. You can also get extra car kits for convenient multi-car use. A subscription to SIRIUS is required. Satellite radio service is available only within the lower 48 states — not available in Hawaii or U.S. territories. Limited service is available in Alaska.

Note: A subscription to SIRIUS is also required. Satellite radio service is available only within Canada and the lower 48 states — not available in Hawaii or U.S. territories. Limited service is available in Alaska. Portable reception may vary by location. If you have questions about the proposed XM/SIRIUS merger, read the SIRIUS guarantee. Receiver Features

SIRIUS Satellite Radio: SIRIUS Satellite Radio features more than 120 channels of original programming beamed coast-to-coast, including 65 channels of commercial-free, digital-quality music, and news, talk, sports, entertainment, and children's programming.

Note: Satellite radio service is available only within the continental United States. Service is not available in Alaska and Hawaii.

Display: The Sportster 4 tuner has a large backlit LCD screen. You can choose between two ways to present the artist and song title information on the LCD screen. The Default screen displays the artist and song title on separate lines. Pressing the Display button will increase the character size to its maximum, put artist and song title information on the same line, and continuously scroll them across the screen. The channel name, number, category, preset band/number, and time of day are always displayed.

Display Adjustments: You can manually adjust the display's contrast and brightness for best viewing.

Category Tuning: The Category buttons allow you to cycle through the available genres of programming: Pop, Rock, Country, Hip-Hop, R&B/Urban, Dance/Electronic, Jazz/Standards, Classical, Latin/World, News, Sports and Entertainment. Once the category has been selected, you can choose the channels from that category using the rotary knob.

Preset Tuning: The tuner allows you to store 30 presets in 3 separate banks (A, B, and C). Preset channels can be tuned directly by selecting a preset band and pressing the preset number on the numeric keypad (unit or remote). You can also activate the preset tune mode in which the rotary knob scrolls through only the preset channels.

Jump: The Jump key is programmed to access a specific channel, regardless of which preset bank is currently selected.

Direct Tuning: Using the direct and numeric buttons on the supplied remote, you can directly access SIRIUS channels by their 3-digit channel numbers.

Channel Lock: You can lock a channel, making it only available by direct tuning. When a locked channel is tuned directly, you will need to enter a 4-digit code before the channel can be heard.

Instant Replay: The receiver is capable of storing the audio from the current channel for later playback. Up to 44 minutes can be stored and accessed later. As soon as you tune to a channel, the receiver automatically begins storing the audio. Once the audio is stored, you can perform the following functions: play, pause, fast forward, and rewind.

Memory and Song Seek Functions: This feature allows you to capture and store the program data information (artist and song title). You can store program data information for up to 30 songs. The tuner will monitor the current incoming SIRIUS signals and alert you if any match the program data information stored in memory.

Antenna Aiming: You can check the strength of the SIRIUS satellite signal being received. When locating the antenna in your home, you should place the antenna in a spot that illuminates the maximum number of bars on the meter.

Antenna: The low-profile SIRIUS antenna has a powerful magnetic base that allows you to mount the antenna on the roof or trunk lid of your vehicle. The antenna needs to be positioned in such a way that it will be free of mechanical and line-of-sight obstructions. The antenna' s dimensions are: W=2.234", H=0.498", D=2.935" (7.236" including "tail"), Cable Length=20.5'.

Note: The attached micro cable has a single SMB connector, which plugs into the docking station.

Audio Output Level: You can adjust the level of the audio output to match the other sources in your audio system.

FM Transmitter: This feature allows you transmit SIRIUS radio programming to your vehicle's FM tuner, so you don't have to make any connections between the SIRIUS receiver and the radio. You can choose any transmitting frequency in the FM band between 88.1 MHz to 107.9 MHz.

Important Note from Crutchfield: Current FCC rules limit the transmission strength of wireless FM transmitters to a point where transmission needs to take place very near your FM antenna. Sirius includes an FM extender antenna with the additional car kit in order to address this issue, but Crutchfield strongly encourages customers to use an auxiliary input, wired FM modulator, or cassette adapter to ensure satisfaction with the performance and cosmetics of this satellite radio.

Game Alert: When your favorite NFL, NBA, NHL, and college team is playing on a different channel, Game Alert will notify you.

Time-Based Functions: The tuner has a built-in clock with the time data provided by the SIRIUS channel. The clock options can be set for 12-hour or 24-hour operation, time zone, and observance of Daylight Saving Time. Once the clock data is set, you can activate the following functions:

  • Alarm Clock: The built-in alarm clock can be set to turn on the unit at a specific time.
  • Program Alert: The Program Alert function allows you to program the unit to turn on and switch to a selected channel at a specific time.
  • Auto Shutdown: The unit can be set to automatically turn off after a one-hour period without any user intervention. After 59 minutes of inactivity, a beep-tone sounds and a display prompt appears on the screen allowing you the option of canceling auto shutdown.
  • Sleep Mode: The receiver can be set to turn off after a selected period of time, 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.

Factory Default: To revert back to all the original receiver settings at once, activate the factory default screen.

Remote Control: In addition to offering all the controls on the receiver's front panel, the remote adds direct tuning, audio mute, and volume control.

Receiver Connections

Receiver Bottom Panel:

  • Docking Station Interface Connection: proprietary connector that interfaces with the vehicle docking station or home docking station

Vehicle Docking Station Features

Overview: The vehicle kit includes everything you need to install the SIRIUS Sportster 4 tuner into your vehicle. The kit contains a docking station, suction cup mount, vent mount, DC power supply (cigarette lighter), roof-mount antenna, and mounting hardware. The SIRIUS tuner mounts firmly in the docking station, where antenna, power and signal connections are made.

Docking Station Connections: The Sportster 4 tuner slides into the docking station and is locked into place. On the back of the docking station are inputs for the antenna and DC power supply, plus a line output (minijack) and an FM transmission antenna output (sub-minijack).

Mounting: Using the supplied suction cup mount, the docking station can be mounted to the windshield in your vehicle. The base has two adjustment points that allow you to adjust the tuner for optimum viewing. The vent mount allows you to mount the docking station to any vent in your vehicle.

Compatibility with Optional Pro-Fit Brackets: The cradle can be mounted directly to the Pro-Fit Legend series Vehicle-Specific Mounts (VSMs). Using the EZ-1026  (item #042EZ1026) Easy Swivel mount, the cradle is also compatible with the regular Pro.Fit International VSM series. Great Gift Idea

Written By Chadwick, Texoma Area on Sunday, February 17, 2008

I have sirius in My Magnum R/T from the factory. Well My wife wanted it in her car, but her fusion didn't come with it from the factory. So I decided this was what I was getting her for Valentines Day. She loved/s it! Although ford does have a factory add on option for the fusion we could have bought we ended up buying this unit because of the price and the ability to bring it in the house and jam out to sirius on the surround sound with additional home kit.

I find myself liking this unit better than the 1600 dollar factory navi/sat radio in my magnum because you can pause, rewind and fast foward radio. Its like having TIVO for the radio. It will hold about 45~ mins of radio. You can also program it to search for you fav artist, songs, or sports team. This thing is awesome compaired to the factory sirius units.

You will need to get the Wired FM Relay Package because the built in transmitter is weak I mean very very weak. But with the Wired FM Relay Package the sound is crystal clear! Installation was very easy. Might have took me a hour and I pulled panels pulled the factory radio and everything. but on a scale of 1-10 10 being hardest this is like a 2-3 to install. Hardest part getting some panels to pop back in place.

Overall I am very satisfied with this radio A+

read this before you buy

Written By gary g, brockton ma on Saturday, February 16, 2008

i was very exited to get the new sportster at a great price and when i installed it i could not have been more disapointed.the reception was horrible.i debated on returning it and reusing my old cheap model that worked great but i really wanted the features of the sportster so i decided to order the fm direct adapter which allows a direct signal into your radio far superior to the fm modulater that is built into the sportster.i heard the fcc cut down the signal strenghth of new units so thats why old ones dont have this problem.this cleared up the problem and i now use it with no problems.do yourself a favor and order the fm direct adapter at the same time as the sportster and you will be very pleased. hope this was helpful ,gary

stops recieving satelite signal after 6 mos

Written By JustSomeguy, NY-NJ metro area on Thursday, February 14, 2008

I got this one because the original sportster after about a year decided to not recieve satelite signal anymore. This happened in the car and the house (I had the home kit). I had a service contract so they (not crutchfield) replaced it. After a few months of flawless performance it decided to not recieve satelite signal again. I haven't checked it on my home dock, but I suspect the same thing will happen. If you check the menu there is an option to show the satelite signal strength which is showing Zero on mine. I don't use the fm transmitter as I have an input on the front of my car stereo. In any event, if I can't get this fixed for free, I'm canceling Sirius. Don't buy this radio.

Needs Auto Dimming Feature

Written By Walter, Glen Cove, New York on Saturday, January 26, 2008

I like everyhing about the Sportster better than the Kenwood that I replaced except one thing. It doesn't have an auto dimming feature at night like the Kenwood had. It is either to bright at night or to dim in the daytime. I don't like to keep adjusting the brightness all the time. Other than that I really enjoy it.

Newer but not better

Written By atomic_rod, Castro Valley, CA on Wednesday, December 26, 2007

I'm attempting to upgrade from a Sportster 1 (yes the big old unit) to this new one, and as many others have had, I too have issues with the FM transmitter. Now I see the disclaimer about FCC rules and such but how is it that my SP1 is completely rock solid with FM broadcasting?

I do like the new song OR artist memory feature and it is more ascetically pleasing then my old brick SP1, but if Sirius knowingly weakened the FM signal then they should have included the direct connect adapter. Also it does sound good using the SUBX1R boombox, but that's a direct connect so you won't hear the static issue.

Overall since an older unit (SP1) outperforms the SP4 I would suggest against purchasing the unit.

Specific complaint about receiver + boombox

Written By Will, ND on Friday, August 17, 2007

The Sirius service itself is good, it suits my tastes much better than XM. I do not have this model in my car, so I cannot attest to the FM range. The form and styling are wonderful, so much smaller and more compact than the older models I had. Also, the docks/cradles work with all the models, no more separate docks for Sportster/Starmate/Stratus.

My complaint is with the boombox. With the old Sirius, the boombox retained the FM transmission. When the receiver was plugged into the boombox, you could also listen to it on another FM radio in the vicinity. The new Sportster 4 disables this. Although it does not mention it at all in either the receiver or boombox manual, the FM transmitter is disabled when the reciever is plugged into the boombox. The made me very upset, so much so that I'm considering going back to my big ugly Sportster (original) to regain this feature.

I think it is ridiculous when a company disables a feature for no technical reason, only for marketing purposes (as far as I can figure.)

One of the best

Written By 007 BAMA, Fort Payne, Alabama on Saturday, March 17, 2007

I've been a subscriber to both Sirius & XM, both have pretty much the same programming with the exception of the celebrities and SPORTS. SPORTS is why I switched to SIRIUS.
That being said I really like this unit as well as if not better than my XM Skyfi2, which at the time of purchase was the best unit available! The Sporster 4 is almost the same radio, with the differences in the look, my only gripe with the Sportster is the smaller buttons, hard to hit the right preset button!
As far as the FM transmitter, all satellite radios FM transmitters are the same, THEY DON'T WORK, unless in perfect conditions, I've tried 'em all.
BITE THE BULLET and by the FM direct connection adapter, don't even think you can get by!!

Great reciever

Written By Andre, Charlotte, NC on Friday, February 23, 2007

Great reciever, the replay feature is fantastic. Much better unit than others I have seen. The FM transmitter is pretty much like all of them are - not great sound quality. However, I hooked it into the IP bus on my head unit, and the sound quality is easily as good as CD.

Thumbs Up For The Sirius Sportster 4

Written By Denny, Oceanside, CA on Wednesday, January 24, 2007

My Sportster 4 delivers exactly what the Crutchfield & Sirius sites promised. I did pay close attention to all site installation refinement information & recommendations. I utilized the Pro-Fit Vehicle Specific Mount; Pro-Fit EZ-1026 Swivel Mount; & FM Direct Adapter to ensure a clean installation & desired performance. As a result, the performance & ease of use of my Sportster 4 equals or exceeds that of the 2006 OEM Sirius I have in another car. I would definately make the same choices if I had it to do over again!

Love this unit

Written By Deirdre, Berlin, CT on Saturday, January 20, 2007

I installed this in my 2002 Camry through the USA Spec iPOD interface. I get three bars (full strength signal) at all times and no interruptions in transmission. The content available through Sirius is awesome. I have not encountered any problems, static, loss of signal, etc. It's great to listen to so much variety with no commercials. I've read about people who used the FM modulation/transmitter who had clarity and signal transmission issues. With the direct (and easy) connection, I've had no problems. I recommend this setup!
