Our take on the SIRIUS Sportster 4

by Matt Freeman
SiriusXM

Sports fans, you can keep up with all of the great play-by-play action on SIRIUS with the Sportster 4 plug-and-play satellite radio. It lets you pause and rewind live broadcasts, so you'll never miss a second of the big game. It also has some great features that'll enhance coverage of your favorite teams, and it delivers the rest of SIRIUS's peerless entertainment options.

To make sure you're on top of your favorite teams, program Game Alert to let you know whenever your favorite NFL, NBA, NHL, and college team is about to take the field. With NFL broadcasts, you can even choose whether you want to listen to the home or away announcers.

The Sportster 4 automatically records the last 44 minutes of the channel you're listening to. Just hit the Rewind button to get an instant replay of the game-winning touchdown, or press Pause if, say, you're interrupted by a phone call. The 44-minute memory clears every time you change the channel or turn the Sportster 4 off. And if you're driving to a game, you can program the front-panel Jump button to go directly to your SIRIUS traffic and weather channel to get traffic updates.

Car accessories
This package includes the car accessories you'll need to play the radio over your vehicle's in-dash stereo. The docking station, which holds the Sportster 4 in your car, features a suction-cup mount that'll attach to any reasonably flat glass surface. A car power adapter and a roof-mount antenna round out the package.

The Sportster 4's built-in wireless FM transmitter broadcasts straight to your vehicle's FM stereo.* A remote control is also included, so your passengers can switch channels while you drive.

Other options
To listen to the Sportster 4 over your home stereo, pick up the optional home accessory kit. You can also get extra car kits for convenient multi-car use. A subscription to SIRIUS is required. Satellite radio service is available only within the lower 48 states — not available in Hawaii or U.S. territories. Limited service is available in Alaska.

Note: A subscription to SIRIUS is also required. Satellite radio service is available only within Canada and the lower 48 states — not available in Hawaii or U.S. territories. Receiver Features

SIRIUS Satellite Radio: SIRIUS Satellite Radio features more than 120 channels of original programming beamed coast-to-coast, including 65 channels of commercial-free, digital-quality music, and news, talk, sports, entertainment, and children's programming.

Note: Satellite radio service is available only within the continental United States. Service is not available in Alaska and Hawaii.

Display: The Sportster 4 tuner has a large backlit LCD screen. You can choose between two ways to present the artist and song title information on the LCD screen. The Default screen displays the artist and song title on separate lines. Pressing the Display button will increase the character size to its maximum, put artist and song title information on the same line, and continuously scroll them across the screen. The channel name, number, category, preset band/number, and time of day are always displayed.

Display Adjustments: You can manually adjust the display's contrast and brightness for best viewing.

Category Tuning: The Category buttons allow you to cycle through the available genres of programming: Pop, Rock, Country, Hip-Hop, R&B/Urban, Dance/Electronic, Jazz/Standards, Classical, Latin/World, News, Sports and Entertainment. Once the category has been selected, you can choose the channels from that category using the rotary knob.

Preset Tuning: The tuner allows you to store 30 presets in 3 separate banks (A, B, and C). Preset channels can be tuned directly by selecting a preset band and pressing the preset number on the numeric keypad (unit or remote). You can also activate the preset tune mode in which the rotary knob scrolls through only the preset channels.

Jump: The Jump key is programmed to access a specific channel, regardless of which preset bank is currently selected.

Direct Tuning: Using the direct and numeric buttons on the supplied remote, you can directly access SIRIUS channels by their 3-digit channel numbers.

Channel Lock: You can lock a channel, making it only available by direct tuning. When a locked channel is tuned directly, you will need to enter a 4-digit code before the channel can be heard.

Instant Replay: The receiver is capable of storing the audio from the current channel for later playback. Up to 44 minutes can be stored and accessed later. As soon as you tune to a channel, the receiver automatically begins storing the audio. Once the audio is stored, you can perform the following functions: play, pause, fast forward, and rewind.

Memory and Song Seek Functions: This feature allows you to capture and store the program data information (artist and song title). You can store program data information for up to 30 songs. The tuner will monitor the current incoming SIRIUS signals and alert you if any match the program data information stored in memory.

Antenna Aiming: You can check the strength of the SIRIUS satellite signal being received. When locating the antenna in your home, you should place the antenna in a spot that illuminates the maximum number of bars on the meter.

Antenna: The low-profile SIRIUS antenna has a powerful magnetic base that allows you to mount the antenna on the roof or trunk lid of your vehicle. The antenna needs to be positioned in such a way that it will be free of mechanical and line-of-sight obstructions. The antenna' s dimensions are: W=2.234", H=0.498", D=2.935" (7.236" including "tail"), Cable Length=20.5'.

Note: The attached micro cable has a single SMB connector, which plugs into the docking station.

Audio Output Level: You can adjust the level of the audio output to match the other sources in your audio system.

FM Transmitter: This feature allows you transmit SIRIUS radio programming to your vehicle's FM tuner, so you don't have to make any connections between the SIRIUS receiver and the radio. You can choose any transmitting frequency in the FM band between 88.1 MHz to 107.9 MHz.

Important Note from Crutchfield: Current FCC rules limit the transmission strength of wireless FM transmitters to a point where transmission needs to take place very near your FM antenna. Sirius includes an FM extender antenna with the additional car kit in order to address this issue, but Crutchfield strongly encourages customers to use an auxiliary input, wired FM modulator, or cassette adapter to ensure satisfaction with the performance and cosmetics of this satellite radio.

Game Alert: When your favorite NFL, NBA, NHL, and college team is playing on a different channel, Game Alert will notify you.

Time-Based Functions: The tuner has a built-in clock with the time data provided by the SIRIUS channel. The clock options can be set for 12-hour or 24-hour operation, time zone, and observance of Daylight Saving Time. Once the clock data is set, you can activate the following functions:

  • Alarm Clock: The built-in alarm clock can be set to turn on the unit at a specific time.
  • Program Alert: The Program Alert function allows you to program the unit to turn on and switch to a selected channel at a specific time.
  • Auto Shutdown: The unit can be set to automatically turn off after a one-hour period without any user intervention. After 59 minutes of inactivity, a beep-tone sounds and a display prompt appears on the screen allowing you the option of canceling auto shutdown.
  • Sleep Mode: The receiver can be set to turn off after a selected period of time, 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.

Factory Default: To revert back to all the original receiver settings at once, activate the factory default screen.

Remote Control: In addition to offering all the controls on the receiver's front panel, the remote adds direct tuning, audio mute, and volume control.

Receiver Connections

Receiver Bottom Panel:

  • Docking Station Interface Connection: proprietary connector that interfaces with the vehicle docking station or home docking station

Vehicle Docking Station Features

The kit contains a docking station, suction cup mount, vent mount, DC power supply (cigarette lighter), roof-mount antenna, and mounting hardware. The SIRIUS tuner mounts firmly in the docking station, where antenna, power and signal connections are made.

Docking Station Connections: The Sportster 4 tuner slides into the docking station and is locked into place. On the back of the docking station are inputs for the antenna and DC power supply, plus a line output (minijack) and an FM transmission antenna output (sub-minijack).

Mounting: Using the supplied suction cup mount, the docking station can be mounted to the windshield in your vehicle. The base has two adjustment points that allow you to adjust the tuner for optimum viewing. The vent mount allows you to mount the docking station to any vent in your vehicle.

Compatibility with Optional Pro-Fit Brackets: The cradle can be mounted directly to the Pro-Fit Legend series Vehicle-Specific Mounts (VSMs). Using the EZ-1026  (item #042EZ1026) Easy Swivel mount, the cradle is also compatible with the regular Pro.Fit International VSM series. Great Gift Idea

Written By Chadwick, Texoma Area on Sunday, February 17, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have sirius in My Magnum R/T from the factory. Well My wife wanted it in her car, but her fusion didn't come with it from the factory. So I decided this was what I was getting her for Valentines Day. She loved/s it! Although ford does have a factory add on option for the fusion we could have bought we ended up buying this unit because of the price and the ability to bring it in the house and jam out to sirius on the surround sound with additional home kit.

I find myself liking this unit better than the 1600 dollar factory navi/sat radio in my magnum because you can pause, rewind and fast foward radio. Its like having TIVO for the radio. It will hold about 45~ mins of radio. You can also program it to search for you fav artist, songs, or sports team. This thing is awesome compaired to the factory sirius units.

You will need to get the Wired FM Relay Package because the built in transmitter is weak I mean very very weak. But with the Wired FM Relay Package the sound is crystal clear! Installation was very easy. Might have took me a hour and I pulled panels pulled the factory radio and everything. but on a scale of 1-10 10 being hardest this is like a 2-3 to install. Hardest part getting some panels to pop back in place.

Overall I am very satisfied with this radio A+

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i was very exited to get the new sportster at a great price and when i installed it i could not have been more disapointed.the reception was horrible.i debated on returning it and reusing my old cheap model that worked great but i really wanted the features of the sportster so i decided to order the fm direct adapter which allows a direct signal into your radio far superior to the fm modulater that is built into the sportster.i heard the fcc cut down the signal strenghth of new units so thats why old ones dont have this problem.this cleared up the problem and i now use it with no problems.do yourself a favor and order the fm direct adapter at the same time as the sportster and you will be very pleased. hope this was helpful ,gary

stops recieving satelite signal after 6 mos

Written By JustSomeguy, NY-NJ metro area on Thursday, February 14, 2008

I got this one because the original sportster after about a year decided to not recieve satelite signal anymore. This happened in the car and the house (I had the home kit). I had a service contract so they (not crutchfield) replaced it. After a few months of flawless performance it decided to not recieve satelite signal again. I haven't checked it on my home dock, but I suspect the same thing will happen. If you check the menu there is an option to show the satelite signal strength which is showing Zero on mine. I don't use the fm transmitter as I have an input on the front of my car stereo. In any event, if I can't get this fixed for free, I'm canceling Sirius. Don't buy this radio.

Needs Auto Dimming Feature

Written By Walter, Glen Cove, New York on Saturday, January 26, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like everyhing about the Sportster better than the Kenwood that I replaced except one thing. It doesn't have an auto dimming feature at night like the Kenwood had. It is either to bright at night or to dim in the daytime. I don't like to keep adjusting the brightness all the time. Other than that I really enjoy it.

Newer but not better

Written By atomic_rod, Castro Valley, CA on Wednesday, December 26, 2007

I'm attempting to upgrade from a Sportster 1 (yes the big old unit) to this new one, and as many others have had, I too have issues with the FM transmitter. Now I see the disclaimer about FCC rules and such but how is it that my SP1 is completely rock solid with FM broadcasting?

I do like the new song OR artist memory feature and it is more ascetically pleasing then my old brick SP1, but if Sirius knowingly weakened the FM signal then they should have included the direct connect adapter. Also it does sound good using the SUBX1R boombox, but that's a direct connect so you won't hear the static issue.

Overall since an older unit (SP1) outperforms the SP4 I would suggest against purchasing the unit.

Specific complaint about receiver + boombox

Written By Will, ND on Friday, August 17, 2007

The Sirius service itself is good, it suits my tastes much better than XM. I do not have this model in my car, so I cannot attest to the FM range. The form and styling are wonderful, so much smaller and more compact than the older models I had. Also, the docks/cradles work with all the models, no more separate docks for Sportster/Starmate/Stratus.

My complaint is with the boombox. With the old Sirius, the boombox retained the FM transmission. When the receiver was plugged into the boombox, you could also listen to it on another FM radio in the vicinity. The new Sportster 4 disables this. Although it does not mention it at all in either the receiver or boombox manual, the FM transmitter is disabled when the reciever is plugged into the boombox. The made me very upset, so much so that I'm considering going back to my big ugly Sportster (original) to regain this feature.

I think it is ridiculous when a company disables a feature for no technical reason, only for marketing purposes (as far as I can figure.)

One of the best

Written By 007 BAMA, Fort Payne, Alabama on Saturday, March 17, 2007

I've been a subscriber to both Sirius & XM, both have pretty much the same programming with the exception of the celebrities and SPORTS. SPORTS is why I switched to SIRIUS.
That being said I really like this unit as well as if not better than my XM Skyfi2, which at the time of purchase was the best unit available! The Sporster 4 is almost the same radio, with the differences in the look, my only gripe with the Sportster is the smaller buttons, hard to hit the right preset button!
As far as the FM transmitter, all satellite radios FM transmitters are the same, THEY DON'T WORK, unless in perfect conditions, I've tried 'em all.
BITE THE BULLET and by the FM direct connection adapter, don't even think you can get by!!

Great reciever

Written By Andre, Charlotte, NC on Friday, February 23, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great reciever, the replay feature is fantastic. Much better unit than others I have seen. The FM transmitter is pretty much like all of them are - not great sound quality. However, I hooked it into the IP bus on my head unit, and the sound quality is easily as good as CD.

Thumbs Up For The Sirius Sportster 4

Written By Denny, Oceanside, CA on Wednesday, January 24, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My Sportster 4 delivers exactly what the Crutchfield & Sirius sites promised. I did pay close attention to all site installation refinement information & recommendations. I utilized the Pro-Fit Vehicle Specific Mount; Pro-Fit EZ-1026 Swivel Mount; & FM Direct Adapter to ensure a clean installation & desired performance. As a result, the performance & ease of use of my Sportster 4 equals or exceeds that of the 2006 OEM Sirius I have in another car. I would definately make the same choices if I had it to do over again!

Love this unit

Written By Deirdre, Berlin, CT on Saturday, January 20, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my 2002 Camry through the USA Spec iPOD interface. I get three bars (full strength signal) at all times and no interruptions in transmission. The content available through Sirius is awesome. I have not encountered any problems, static, loss of signal, etc. It's great to listen to so much variety with no commercials. I've read about people who used the FM modulation/transmitter who had clarity and signal transmission issues. With the direct (and easy) connection, I've had no problems. I recommend this setup!

Great except FM transmitter

Written By Thomas, Westford, MA on Friday, December 29, 2006

I read the complaints about the FM transmitter, but bought the unit anyway. My Car has a Bose stereo and I thought it would overcome the weak transmitter. I was wrong. I think the better stereo just picked up more hiss and static. I then bought the direct FM connector. Installing it turned out to be pretty simple in my car, (Nissan Murano) and I am now very happy. I drove to Maryland over Christmas and was thrilled to have high quality music of my choice for the entire trip.

Important note from Crutchfield: Current FCC rules limit the transmission strength of wireless FM transmitters to a point where transmission needs to take place very near your FM antenna. Sirius/XM includes extra wiring in order to address this issue, but Crutchfield strongly encourages customers to use an auxiliary input, wired FM modulator, or cassette adapter to ensure your satisfaction with the performance and cosmetics of this satellite radio.

Awesome with alittle caution

Written By Jerry, Rochester,NY on Thursday, December 28, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased the Sportster 4 and am overall happy with it. I use it primarily in the new SUBX1 Sirius boombox and it sounds awesome. If you require FM modulation to listen on any FM radio you will be disappointed.Using the Sportster in our second vehicle is useless and unable to find any FM frequency that would work! Sounds awesome with any kind of direct connect. Screen is great and easily seen in a vehicle. Set up is easy and menu is very simple.

Very Happy

Written By Stephen, Tupper Lake, NY on Thursday, December 07, 2006

Just like everyone else, I read the reviews. However, I took a chance on this unit. I couldn't be happier. This is the first for me with Sirius radio. So I did my homework. It is true about the FM wireless transmitter, it is not very strong. Rememeber I have nothing to compare it to. However, I live in the mountains and there are not many radio stations up here. After the install, I went through a bunch of radio stations until I found one that works really well. Yes I do have some static, but you can't hear the static until you turn the volume up high on your head unit. I am very pleased with this unit and Sirius and of course Crutchfield is awesome.

Everything That Expected

Written By 67Cuda, Livermore, CA. on Monday, November 27, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read the reviews before buying and with the anticipated problems with the FM modulation I installed it with the FM modulator. All I can say is it is everything that I anticipated. I did a custom install myself and perhaps that adds to my satisfaction over all, but it looks good and sounds great. I like the versatility of it by being able to use it in the house and also to be able to hook up an iPod or other MP3 player, more bang for my buck. The unit is small and unobtrusive, the song and game alerts are also a great feature.

Overall, very happy with this unit

Written By Greg, Phoenix, AZ on Thursday, November 16, 2006

I purchased the Sportster 4 a few weeks ago and have absolutely loved it. I have not had any problems with the antenna as other people have mentioned. I have it wired directly into my Alpine 9857, using the aux in. Yes, that deck is satellite ready, but I wanted portability in my Sirius unit. Because I have it wired directly in with stereo RCA Monster cables, I do not use FM modulators. I understand why people would be upset about it being weak (I haven't even tried it), but it's not fair to drag down the entire rating of this unit over and over again for one thing like that. Other than the FM transmitter, it's a great piece of equipment. If you're planning on hiding all the wires you'll probably need an extension for the 12v connector. The antenna cable is plenty long enough for even larger vehicles though. The only complaint I have about it at all is that it's a little stiff when trying to undock it from the cradle; probably a two-handed operation for most installs.

Nice looking unit; poor FM modulation.

Written By Chris, Lexington, KY on Friday, September 29, 2006

Like a lot of other reviews I read, the built-in FM modulator is very poor. Actually, I tried the relay from the same manufacturer and it was no better. Fortunately, my head unit has an AUX input in the rear, so I just got some RCA's and it works well.
The window mount actually works well in our case. Like some others, I got a "No antenna detected" after a few weeks. The Crutchfield tech support guy apparently had some customer feedback on this and sent me a replacement antenna, which solved the problem. So apparently it's not the receiver in many cases but a defective antenna.
The vent mount is useless and seems very fragile. DEI might as well not have included it.
The sound itself with my head unit is fine, no complaints.
I gave it a 3 because of the FM and the antenna. FM should be a working option for those who need it, and the antenna should be reliable !

I tried really I tried.

Written By Sneakfm, Austin, TX on Saturday, September 23, 2006

I must say that when I read all these bad reviews that there is no way that this reciever could be that bad. I mean I have the Sportster 3 and I love that thing. So easy to install easy to setup and easy to listen to didnt need any add ons. This version was more of a chore then anything. The FM signal which I know is said alot on here is down right disgusting. ( I really didnt think it would be that weak). I had bought the relay and realized that it was going to be to much of a chore to get this thing installed in the back of my radio deck.

Another thing was the deck itself it small and thats cool. But if you already have the Sportster 3 then honestly, you really dont need this one. In fact it was much harder to take the SP4 out of its cradle then the SP3 was.
The only saving grace for this machine was the Aux In for MP3 players. And that was probably my biggest reason for getting this receiver.

I love Sirius to death in fact I drove my girlfriend crazy about how much I wanted this receiver guess she got the last laugh.

his thing is beautiful and really looks nice installed. But as everyone else has said, the FM modulator is awful. In fact it's unusable. I'm also in the process of getting mine replaced as it no longer detects an antenna, an obvious drawback. Wait for somethin better or get an older model.

Got his unit as a replacement for an SP4 which was back ordered. FM modulation was not usable in other than remote rural locations. Crutchfield came through and the base ST2 is now in my car a working like a charm. Believe the reviews....this one is not worth your time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had high hopes for this slick looking unit, and decided to go against all of the reviews here. I should have listened... First, the FM signal is weak as others have mentioned. I installed the sirius relay as others have mentioned, and it was still weak, but tolerable. I still had to change stations multiple times on a recent drive to Dallas. Next, the mounting options are poor. The window mount never did quite work right, and the vent mount is a joke. One, you lose funciton of the vent, and two it weighs down your vent and drops down with every bump in the road. Finally, mine was constantly dropping signal after two weeks of use. I would get a "no antenna detected" message, so I would have to rotate the antenna wire and it would start working again. This worked for about three days. Then, it just quit recieving any signal. I've had two other SIRIUS units and had no problems. I bought this one to "UPGRADE", BIG MISTAKE. Luckily, CRUTCHFIELD has great customer service so this bad boy is going back tomorrow. I guess I'll go with an older unit that is a bit more reliable. I love SIRIUS, but they need to take a few pages from the XM playbook and spend a little $ on the product development, not just programming.

PROS: - BEAUTIFUL!
- Crutchfields Customer service

CONS: - POOR FM SIGNAL
- POOR MOUNTING OPTIONS
- UNITS ANTENNA INPUT QUIT FUNCTIONING
AFTER TWO WEEKS.

Believe the reviews

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well becuase crutchfield offered a no risk trial period, I decided to go against the reviews. And they are accurate. The function is great, the pause is cool, and the unit has a nice size screen. BUT THE STRENGTH OF THE FM SIGNAL IT PUTS OUT IS VERY BAD! In oceanside (not to many competing stations) it isn't to bad. A soon as i went to orange county or san diego, it was very annoying to almost impossible to get anything modualted. If you really liek the unit, just but the FM link cable at the same time, trust me.

Very Pleased

Written By Joseph, San Diego, Ca on Monday, July 24, 2006

With the only addition of an FM Modulator all of the parts included with the purchase of the radio made the installation somewhat easy for someone that has the ability. The FM modulator is a necessity with this product only to guarantee excellent FM transmission. The features of this radio are great and the variety of programing make this product and service well worth the price. When using the vent mount or suction mount devices with the docking platform the plugs for the antenna, power and modulator easily plug into the rear of the unit, however, in both cases the radio projects away from the dash or window. But, looks very stylish.

I now enjoy all of the programming available both in my car at a reasonable price and best of all on the Sirius web site.

Great, but....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit, like the others have said is pretty great. It is my personal first experience with Satellite Radio. I bought it for the content and being able to get my stations everywhere.

The built in FM transmitter is pretty bad. If you're considering this unit, go ahead and get the FM modulator with it. It's non powered, but wow the difference is AMAZING. Similarly, there were very few channels that worked and they didn't work all over the place so I was constantly changing the FM broadcast station. With the FM relay, I was able to clearly broadcast OVER a station and you couldn't even tell that station existed.

If you've ever used an FM transmitter for the iPod, it's pretty similar and then gone to an AUX in, you notice a huge difference. This is the same. With the relay, the fidelity of the music returned and I was extremely impressed.

Over all this device has great features and is a soft blue glow. Great job. The keys have a nice tactile response also.

Poor FM Modulation Performance

Written By Scott, St. Louis on Thursday, June 29, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Do not Purchase this Unit if you plan to use it via FM Modulation unless you want to buy and install one of the FM Mod-Relay kits in each Car or Truck you want to use this in...

The built in FM-Mod is so weak; I started at 88.1 and went all the way up the Dial (even varying the poweroutput of the unit from min to max)and could not even detect a faint signal to my factory head Unit... Even with this unit Touching the Factory HeadUnit...

I tried this in my 2005 Ford Escape, 1996 GMC Sonoma, 2000 S-10 Blazer and 2006 Saturn ION, same deal in all Vehicles. Nothing.

If you have an Aftermarket Headunit that has an AUX input and can get a Mini to RCA Patch, it will work fine...

Beides the Remote Control not comming with a Battery, The unit itself is pretty nice and has all the right features... I was able to Rig it up indoors and get usage of it...

As far as Initial Setup, it is Simple.. Anyone that can read (maybe, just follow Pictures) can set this and the Sirius Service up....

Just DO NOT buy it if FM Modulation is your prefered interface, unless you do some more planning...

Lastly, I contacted Crutchfields Customer Service and Tech Support about this and while they were not able to provide me with a solution I was happy with, they did offer two External add on units, that could have worked, if I wanted a Hard Wired Solution...

The problem was not theirs (techs) or Crutchfieds...

They were extremly polite and you could tell they were trying to help... Which should not be a supprise if youve dealt with them before...

I will always recomend them. Great Staff and Site!

SIRIUS Sportster 4

Written By Frank, South Amboy, NJ on Tuesday, June 27, 2006

I Love the unit at first i had it direct conneced to my head unit and the sound quality was great..

However when i moved the unit into my new car with its factory radio

The built in Fm Transmitter was terrable i couldn't find a single station that would work.

So purchased the Sirius Wired FM Modulation Relay for Starmate, Starbase and Sportster (Model: 14110) and that did the job the sound qualtiy has been restored to great..

So over all i am happy with this product.. as long as you are willing to but the addtional rely for 20 bucks its a great product

Ultimately disappointing

Written By Lugosi, Warrenton, Virginia on Friday, June 23, 2006

The Sportster's biggest problem is its FM converter: It is essentially worthless. I was unable to find a single frequency that wasnt subject to some sort of interference. Even the frequencies I use with the Starmate Replay were picking up static and/or bursts of music from elsewhere. In fact, at the lower end of the FM spectrum (the 88s and 89s) I got nothing. Even on the completely blank frequencies there was just nothing there. Finally around the 90.1 range you would be able to make out whichever channel you were trying to listen to. The upper frequencies were "listenable," provided you were willing to put up with the interference.

I dont know what effect using a direct connect FM modulator would have on this shortcoming.

The second problem is that the power and antenna cables connect directly to the back of the cradle, NOT the sides. The end result is that the back of the radio is no longer a smooth surface, and you can no longer simply velcro the unit to the dashboard. It does come with that annoying standard-issue suction cup mount or a vent mount. I'm not a big fan of either mounting method, however.

On the plus side: If you are able to playback with either a cassette adapter or a direct connect cable, you will like the Sportster 4. It's a beautifully sleek looking unit and the various controls are laid out well. The blue backlight is just a bit weak during the day, but unobtrusive at night.

Buying additional cradles--whether for the house or other cars--makes moving the radio from one location to another a snap since you don't have to deal with connecting and disconnecting various cables.
