Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently had my Sportster 4 stolen from my vehicle. I had that unit for over 9 years. I have always wanted to trade up to a Sportster 5 with the color changing display, well I had no choice. I purchaced the unit from Crutchfield. The Sportster 5 is everything I thought it would be and more. Great job guys.

Pros: Trouble free so far.

Cons: NONE

My old Sportster refused to update and needed to be replaced, it was 6 yrs old. After lookiing at other models, I settled on another Sportster. Best decision I could have made. The color screen and the thin body design are awesome! The other features are comparable to the older model, Team alert, score alert, 30 presets, what's not to like.

I use to have XM radio in the past and I really missed it. My coming back has enhanced my delight once again to be able to listen to my favorite music I enjoy. Now that Sirius and XM has merged together, it makes the experience even better. My purchase of the Sirius Sportster 5 was a informative and smooth process, thanks Crutchfield.

Pros: Great product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I researched to find the best. I found it in this radio. I love the color display. Great quality. No problems after two weeks. Works best when your vehicle has an auxiliary input. Very happy with this purchase.

Cons: My husband has to dial his in on various stations when traveling because his truck has no auxiliary input. Mine is much clearer.

Excellent version of the Sportster

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First and foremost, the customer service and support I received from Crutchfield is second to none. I placed my order on a weekend and still received it in three business days with the free shipping included. The Crutchfield Advisors are an incredible resource to designing and installing a system in your car. Having the Crutchfield team behind you during an install is better than having an extended warranty. They will never leave you hanging-no question will go unanswered.

Now onto the Sportster: The display is much more pleasing to the eye than earlier models, and the much, much thinner profile is very nice. Other than that it performs pretty much as my old Sportster did. I have this in my glove box and operate it through my new Sony XAV-70BT head unit utilizing the VDOC cradle/adapter and the SNYSC1 Sirius Connect Sony Interface. This is the best setup if you do not want a ton of electronics in the cockpit.

The only con to this unit is actually a reflection of Sirius itself. I absolutely am hooked on Sirius programming, but the sound quality produced by all of their units should be at least CD quality and it quite simply falls short. No matter how well I tweak the EQ Sirius always produces a hollow sort of echo.

All in all the Unit is everything I expected and it looks even better once I got my hands on it. As far as the sound quality issue, apparently it is not enough to keep me from renewing my subscription, as I have for the past 8 years.

I have had a Sportster 5 for 18 months. The first one went bad after about 18 months. The connection between the radio and the dock had issues. The spot where the antena connection is went bad in the radio, and Sirius too bad out of warantee

The second radio has lasted about a year to date. Exact same problem again. Contacted Sirius again and they said that it is out of warranty, and that this can happen when it is moved to much. I probably move the radio 20 times per year. Is that really too much?

There docking systen really su... I love the convienice of the dock and play, but I will buy a cheaper unit like the Starmate this next time since these head units are "disposable."

I am going on a drive to SW FL in April and previously hated the drive because of the "radio desert" all through SC. Now I can listen to music or to NPR (apparently unheard of in coastal SC) during the long trip. I am too old to crawl around so I paid a good install shop $135 to do a really good installation and I am glad.

Be prepared to replace it in a year.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My wife and I purchased this for my father in laws birthday. My father in law and I installed it in his Jeep in one evening. We also used installation kit part number 607SIRPVK1 from Crutchfield which I would say is a must have! The instructions that came with the radio were great. The installation is super clean and professional looking (it was easy!) The most difficult part was deciding placement of the radio. We chose an area on the dash itself and mounted it directly to the dash (with help of the previously mentioned installation kit). Everything worked upon first power on, great product. I wish I had a Sirius radio in my car...! The radio comes with instructions on how to mount the antenna on the roof and hide the wire within the weatherstripping. This was my largest concern regarding the install and the instructions explained this very well.

If you are going to use this in a over-the-road truck, forget it!!!

I am a Sirius liftime subscriber since 2003. I updated from my original Kenwood PNP to the Sporster 5. Color is great and the 6 line display is very easy to read. I definitely would recomend this unit to a user who is looking for a Sirius PNP

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works as advertised. I switced from an older receiver that went belly-up and was skeptical of going from one with the overly strong FM transmitter method of set-up to using the cassette adpater method -- but it worked out fine. I bought an extended cigarette plug mount that brought the receiver into the same vicinity as the cassette player which minimized the length of the exposed wiring. My only complaint is that the channel dial is overly senstive meaning that it frequently jumps two channels instead of only one -- especially in the winter when I have gloves on.

I found Spotster 5 easy to install. Learning to use the remote made finding the stations to listen to easier then using the radio itself. Programing the presets was a piece of cake. I would recomend this to anyone.

This has been GREAT. Easy to install in car, easy to get subscription. Since we specifically picked out a new car stereo with a front aux plug, we needed the aux cable to come with this. Not a big deal, just bought one at the store.

We also got the home kit and it works perfectly also!

Good stuff

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this installed for a a couple of weeks now. No major complaints, at least not with CF. Sirius advertises a monthly subscription price, but just try and sign up for one month, it's not available and they will make you commit to a year. As far as the receiver goes, I found it to be well built, fairly easy to navigate but there are a couple of confusing buttons in the menu system but the remote is easier to work with so I just use that. I love the Jump feature. Reception is solid in the car, but the home kit I bought seemed to have a less sensitive antenna. The only thing that I can say was less than expected was the quality of the dock. I found it to be flimsy and weak. Forget about the vent mount, that was a bad idea! Reception, sound quality and overall functionality are great. I won't bother reviewing the features as they are exactly what was described in the product description. The CF installation instructions were right on the mark for getting the car antenna placement correct. I even get reception when my car is in my garage... never thought that would be possible for a satellite radio, but it is true. About the only thing that makes me loose reception are the really huge overpasses... like 18 lanes across overpasses. The normal 4 lane overpasses don't bother it one bit. I would say it was a good value and I love the remote as I was able to use it to program my universal (learning) remote so now I have a remote in the house and in the car.

I have enjoyed this item for the last month as it was easy to install and to me for a plug in play it sounds really good. I was hesitant to use the plug and play as I wanted to have a factory set up. After some research I chose this one and I am not dissappointed. The instructions and support from Crutchfield is first class. I would recommend the direct connect instead of the wireless as you do not have to worry about finding a new channel as you travel and to me the sound is so much better with direct connect. Great item and I highly recommend it.

Worth it!

Great nice compact radio. Only problem is that I had to change some wiring around in my car to use 5 volt power instead of the old radio's 12 volt. This unit runs a lot cooler and has many neat features compared to other units. I would recommend getting the boom box as well!

Just installed a Sportster 5 in my 2006 Toyota Highlander...and I am
THRILLED with it. This is my 3rd Sirius PnP, and by far the best one I have
used yet. If you are looking for a feature-rich radio but aren't ready to pay
the price for a Stiletto (as I was), this is the radio for you !!

Loaded with features, VERY compact, and easy to use. When I pulled it out
of the box my wife asked "is that the face plate?"..."No honey,...that is the
whole radio". LOL...

Highly recommend istalling the FM direct-connect adapter as well - makes
all the difference in the world.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed my new sportster 5 last night and I am extremely pleased. A
bit of research regarding the way my dashboard comes apart helped me
pull off a seamless install and I am not a professional. I really like the
optional color schemes that match the colors on my dash buttons. I also
really like the ability to scan through the listings of what is playing on other
channels without actually having to change stations on the radio. It brings
a whole new feeling of "channel surfing" in the car. I didn't think I would
get much use out of the remote but it is nice to be able to surf without
having your hand on the unit (I mounted mine to the windshield just above
my stock radio and you do have to reach to touch it, but I like having the
unit in my field of vision while im driving). I did also purchase the wired FM
adapter which is a must have with this unit. I disconnected the wired
modulator for a second just to see what the result was and while I could
hear the sirius playing over the FM frequency it was extremely washed out
and full of static. The FM transmitters in these new radios are not as
powerful as the old ones and you will be disappointed if you do not hard
wire the radio to your system in some way. An auxilary input is obviously
the first choice. My stock radio does not have an aux input so the Wired FM
adapter was what i needed. It sounds better than my old FM modulated
unit and was super easy to install.

The Sportster 5 is a nice addition to Sirius radios. I also bought the boom box and it sounds great. Occasionally the antenna is difficult to aim outside my garage but overall I am pleased with my purchases. As far as ordering from Crutchfield, I would recommend dealing with them to anyone. This is my 5th satellite radio purchase, my fourth with Sirius. I have had 2
starmate 3's and one starmate 4. The sporster 5 is a little bigger but the
screen is soooo much nicer. It does not get as hot as the starmates and
with the adjustable colors does not blind the driver. Worked great out of
the box and sirius customer support was great with transfering my service
from my starmate 3. This is a great looking unit, buy with confidence. And
the Crutchfield Team is awesome as always with getting you hooked up
with accessories you need to make the product sound great! Love the PIE

After searching the internet and local stores Crutchfield was the ideal place to purchase the Sportster 5. The price they offer can't be beat and the customer service is unheard of. The vehicle kit was "Out of Stock" when I ordered the Sportster 5 but they sent an email letting me know when they shipped it and included a tracking number. Has anyone else noticed customer service these days has been pretty poor lately nationwide? That is why I'll recommend Crutchfield to everyone in site - the customer service and price cannot be beat. I have never left feedback for any online company before but......CRUTCHFIELD IS THE BEST!!!

I bought this radio when it first came out. I had to go back the next day to get the FM Direct Adapter the sound quality was well worth the extra $$$. I have used other Sirius radios and this one is by far the best... you can choose from many different colors and the sports ticker is nice if you want to listen to music on another channel and still keep tabs on the game. If you want satellite radio this is the one to get.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought 2 radios for each of our vehicles, one wouldn't activate; tried at least 10 times by using Internet and Sirius Phone Tech-Support. Crutchfield immediately sent me a replacement and this radio works great. So far I am pleased with the features and sound quality. Thanks to Crutchfield for sending a replacement without requiring me to return the bad radio first.

On a side note, I tried using one of these radios with the USA-Spec iPod adapter (Toyota Version) by using the AUX input and had horrible ignition/hissing noise. Switched to the Sirius FM Direct accessory and it sounds great.

Avery nice improvement over the the first 4 Sportsters . This unit does not get hot like the other Sirius radios that I have owned and has some nice features such as the 1 hour rewind and the ability to change the color of the display. The dial is larger and coated with rubber so turning the dial is easier than the older models. The only improvement the I wish they would make is a dial for the color change feature on the unit. There are still too many menus to go thou to do this.

Receiver Features

SIRIUS Satellite Radio: SIRIUS Satellite Radio features more than 120 channels of original programming beamed coast-to-coast, including 65 channels of commercial-free, digital-quality music, and news, talk, sports, entertainment, and children's programming. Satellite radio service is available only within the continental United States. Service is not available in Alaska and Hawaii.

Multi-Color Display: The Sportster 5 tuner has a large multi-color backlit LCD screen. You can select from 15 different color combinations for the unit's LCD screen background and text, and the front-panel button backlight color. You can also adjust the brightness and contrast of the unit's color LCD screen. In addition, you can choose between two ways to present the artist and song title information on the LCD screen. The Default screen displays the artist and song title on separate lines. Pressing the Display button will increase the character size to its maximum, put artist and song title information on the same line, and continuously scroll them across the screen. The channel name, number, category, preset band/number, and time of day are always displayed.

Search Modes: You can search for and select music four ways on the Sportster 5. You can search and select by Category, Channel, Artist and Song title. The Category mode allows you to cycle through the available genres of programming: Pop, Rock, Country, Hip-Hop, R&B/Urban, Dance/Electronic, Jazz/Standards, Classical, Latin/World, News, Sports and Entertainment. Once the category has been selected, you can choose the channels from that category using the rotary knob.

Channel Preview List: The Channel Preview List feature makes it possible to search for a different channel while listening to your current channel so you never have to interrupt your music.

Direct Tuning: Using the direct and numeric buttons on the supplied remote, you can directly access SIRIUS channels by their 3-digit channel numbers.

Preset Tuning: The tuner allows you to store 30 presets in 3 separate banks (A, B, and C - 10 presets each). Preset channels can be tuned directly by selecting a preset band and pressing the preset number on the numeric keypad (unit or remote). You can also activate the preset tune mode in which the rotary knob scrolls through only the preset channels.

Jump: The Jump key is programmed to access a specific channel, regardless of which preset bank is currently selected.

Channel Lock: You can lock a channel, making it only available by direct tuning. When a locked channel is tuned directly, you will need to enter a 4-digit code before the channel can be heard.

Instant Replay: The receiver is capable of storing the audio from the current channel for later playback. Up to 44 minutes can be stored and accessed later. As soon as you tune to a channel, the receiver automatically begins storing the audio. Once the audio is stored, you can perform the following functions: play, pause, fast forward, and rewind.

Memory and Song Seek Functions: This feature allows you to capture and store the program data information (artist and song title). You can store program data information for up to 30 songs. The tuner will monitor the current incoming SIRIUS signals and alert you if any match the program data information stored in memory.

FM Transmitter: This feature allows you transmit SIRIUS radio programming to your vehicle's FM tuner, so you don't have to make any connections between the SIRIUS receiver and the radio. You can choose any transmitting frequency in the FM band between 88.1 MHz to 107.9 MHz. You can also set five FM transmitter presets for easier accessibility.

Important Note from Crutchfield: Current FCC rules limit the transmission strength of wireless FM transmitters to a point where transmission needs to take place very near your FM antenna. Sirius includes an FM extender antenna with the additional car kit in order to address this issue, but Crutchfield strongly encourages customers to use an auxiliary input, wired FM modulator, or cassette adapter to ensure satisfaction with the performance and cosmetics of this satellite radio.

FM Output: The supplied vehicle kit for the Sportster 5 features a 3.5mm FM output for connecting the SIRIUS FM Direct Adapter (607FMDA25, sold separately) which will provide a hardwired FM connection and give you better sound quality versus a wireless connection.

Auxiliary Output: The supplied vehicle kit for the Sportster 5 features a 3.5mm auxiliary output so you can connect the SIRIUS tuner directly to your headunit via a stereo 3.5mm minijack cable (sold separately). Your headunit must feature an auxiliary input to use this feature. If you headunit features a stereo RCA auxiliary input, you will need an RCA to Y-adapter to make the connection.

Audio Output Level: You can adjust the level of the audio output to match the other sources in your audio system.

Antenna: The low-profile SIRIUS antenna has a powerful magnetic base that allows you to mount the antenna on the roof or trunk lid of your vehicle. The antenna needs to be positioned in such a way that it will be free of mechanical and line-of-sight obstructions. The antenna' s dimensions are: W = 2.1875", H = 0.442", D = 2.426" (5.175" including "tail"); Cable Length = 20.5'. The attached micro cable has a single SMB connector, which plugs into the docking station.

Antenna Aiming: You can check the strength of the SIRIUS satellite signal being received. When locating the antenna in your home, you should place the antenna in a spot that illuminates the maximum number of bars on the meter.

Game Alert With Sports Ticker: When your favorite NFL, NBA, NHL, and college team is playing on a different channel, Game Alert will notify you. The Sports Ticker feature will display the information (including the channel that is carrying the game) for the team continually during a game they are playing. The currently-playing artist and song title will still be visible when the ticker is active.

Time-Based Functions: The tuner has a built-in clock with the time data provided by the SIRIUS channel. The clock options can be set for 12-hour or 24-hour operation, time zone, and observance of Daylight Saving Time. Once the clock data is set, you can activate the following functions:

Alarm Clock: The built-in alarm clock can be set to turn on the unit at a specific time.
Program Alert: The Program Alert function allows you to program the unit to turn on and switch to a selected channel at a specific time.
Auto Shutdown: The unit can be set to automatically turn off after a one-hour period without any user intervention. After 59 minutes of inactivity, a beep-tone sounds and a display prompt appears on the screen allowing you the option of canceling auto shutdown.
Sleep Mode: The receiver can be set to turn off after a selected period of time, 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.

Factory Default: To revert back to all the original receiver settings at once, activate the factory default screen.

Remote Control: In addition to offering all the controls on the receiver's front panel, the remote adds direct tuning, audio mute, and volume control.

Receiver Connections

Receiver To Docking Station Interface Connection: There is a proprietary connector on the bottom of the Sportster 5 tuner that interfaces with the supplied vehicle docking station or optional home docking station.

Vehicle Docking Station Features

Overview: The vehicle kit includes everything you need to install the SIRIUS Sportster 5 tuner into your vehicle. The kit contains a docking station, suction cup mount, vent mount, DC power supply (cigarette lighter), magnetic roof-mount antenna, and mounting hardware. The SIRIUS tuner mounts firmly in the docking station, where the antenna, power and signal connections are made.

Docking Station Connections: The Sportster 5 tuner slides into the docking station and is locked into place. On the sides of the docking station are inputs for the antenna and DC power supply, plus a line output (minijack) and an FM transmission antenna output (sub-minijack).

Mounting: Using the supplied suction cup mount, the docking station can be mounted to the windshield in your vehicle. The base has two adjustment points that allow you to adjust the tuner for optimum viewing. The vent mount allows you to mount the docking station to any vent in your vehicle.

Compatibility with Optional Pro-Fit Brackets: The cradle can be mounted directly to the Pro-Fit Legend series Vehicle-Specific Mounts (VSMs). Using the EZ-1026  (item #042EZ1026) Easy Swivel mount, the cradle is also compatible with the regular Pro.Fit International VSM series. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to see which VSMs are compatible with your vehicle.
