Fantastic Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put up with the quirks and cutting out of service with an Xact Sirius plug and play for several years. What a refreshing change it is to have this receiver! It has never cut out except in the garage. The sound is very clear and seems to have better range than the one I had before. I am using an aux in on my car receiver for this unit.

Once again - Great unit. I should have bought one sooner.

Easy set up

This was a gift for my girlfriend. She set it up by herself and she's very happy. This will be used in her salon so the big display and the presets are exactly what she needed to set the mood.

SIRIUS Starmate 4

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product. Fairly easy to install. If you're not comfortable installing, ask for a professional. This install took about 3 hours in the summer heat to complete. I recommend purchasing the FM adapter if you have factory stereo. I've never had good experiences using the wireless FM option with other products. The only issue I faced was mounting using the provided mounting options. The windshield mount wasn't an option for me and so I opted to use the AC vent mount. I constantly run into problems with the mount coming loose because the mout is universal thus doesn't always work well on every vent. A few wire ties later and stays!! :)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great receiver when hooked directly to car radio or powered speakers. Previous model lasted about two years before display went bad.

Could be better if:
The display needs auto dimming for night time use in auto.
Program alert should auto tune to that channel at the time set.

Nice unit, not so great service

Written by: drjenki from Chicago, IL on July 25, 2007

This was my first Satellite radio purchase. I found this receiver to be very easy to use with a great layout and simple controls. I read about people complaining about lots of heat from these devices too and this one was pretty good. It got warm to the touch on the top and that's about it. Although I've only had the unit for two weeks, already the 4 and 5 buttons on the unit don't respond unless I really apply some pressure. The remote was handy and I often used it more than the buttons on the unit.

I'm returning this and canceling Sirius service because I found the audio quality to be poor. On many of the stations I noticed the audio sound wavey/watery like it was being stream'd over the web. Not all the stations sounded this way but many I listened too did and also the talk sounded only a step above AM. I've heard this from many other people to and friends who use Sirius also say that they don't think it sounds that great. I wrote Sirius to ask if they compressed channels or if the Satellite and Terrestrial would conflict occasionally to produce this poor quality. Even though I stated that not all channels sounded this way they advised me to have a professional check my install. Sure, that should fix it.

Maybe it is the device or the install that is causing the poor audio. You be the judge. This unit is very nice and if you're currently happy with the service and were looking to nice upgrade.

The FM Modulator direct connection method works great

Written by: milojr from Tampa, FL on July 15, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield strongly recommended using an FM modulator direct connection for installing my Starmates (I have 1 in each car), plus they included the kit for free. The sound is exceptional; no static whatsoever. With the included vehicle-specific dashboard removal instructions, installation was a breeze. I highly recommend the starmate!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The windshield suction cup is illegal in MN, but I did use the parts to rig it into my unused ashtray in a 2005 Elantra. Overall it took about an hour to make everything "hidden". The Starmate 4 is awesome, had to pay a year up front, I think if you call in to activate you could go monthly plan.

SIRIUS Starmate 4

Written by: Robert from Niagara Falls ,New York on March 13, 2007

I recently installed the Starmate 4 in my truck. It took about 15 min. total, using the cassette adapter. My only complaint is with vent attachment itself. A very shakey, loose fitting gadget. Sirius needs to redesign these parts( or perhaps some clever aftermarket manufacturer)
I also own the Tivioli Sirius table radio and the SUBX1 boombox. I am happy with the performance of both units. I'll be even happier when Sirius & XM merge in the next year or so. More choices can only be good as long as the monthly fee doesn't skyrocket.

Good value; just a few complaints

Written by: Matthew from Atlanta on February 9, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, this is a good unit, with some exceptions. In my case, I had a bad hissing when I ran the unit using the wireless FM transmission. Once I bought the FM Direct Adapter and hard wired the ST4 to my radio, the sound became very good. Also, the remote's buttons are not backlit, making it impossible to see them at night.

For the price (after rebate), the unit is very good, if used with FM Adapter. It's ashame that I had to buy another $20 accessory to make it sound good, but so be it. I installed the entire radio and the direct adapter myself, which saved about $75 in installation costs.

Sirius' channel offerings are wonderful. I can no longer listen to my local radio stations. If you can install this yourself and, thus, save on the installation costs, get the FM Direct Adapter and this radio should serve you well.

Decent Satellite Radio

Written by: Bill from Long Island, NY on February 8, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit (Starmate 4) back in January and I am impressed with it. It sounds really good! I have found with it:

Pros: Informative Display, sits snuggly in the dock, good audio coupling/signal between the FM modulator and the in dash radio.

Cons: Difficult to find a place for the antenna (if using wirelessly) in older type vehicles such as mine, weak satellite signal from time to time going under bridges etc., very bright display.

I'm using it wirelessly and have the antenna between the headliner and the fiberglass cap and believe it or not I'm still getting a decent satellite signal. I like the variety of channels to listen too. It's getting to the point where there is not much to listen too on regular radio in my area and bringing CD's can be somewhat of a pain. I would recommend the Starmate 4.

not as good as the older models...

Written by: Paul from La Porte, TX on December 27, 2006

The FM transmitter on this thing is a joke. I have the Starmate Replay (an older version of this thing) and can broadcast to stereos 50ft away w/o any problem. This unit isn't strong enough to broadcast to the same vehicle. It has great features but FM broadcasting isn't one of them. I'm having to purchase the FM adapter to get it to work properly, which isn't much, only about $20, but I know several people with Sirius units and none have had to purchase the adapter.
It's irritating because I know how good these radios can be.

Important note from Crutchfield: Current FCC rules limit the transmission strength of wireless FM transmitters to a point where transmission needs to take place very near your FM antenna. Sirius/XM includes extra wiring in order to address this issue, but Crutchfield strongly encourages customers to use an auxiliary input, wired FM modulator, or cassette adapter to ensure your satisfaction with the performance and cosmetics of this satellite radio.

Great Radio!

Written by: Chris from Port Chester, NY on December 22, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this radio a lot. Very small, fits in your pocket if you need to carry it around. I like the 10 presets right at your finger. very easy to read in the day and night, nice upgrade from my orange screen.

It has a memory option to record something you missed, but I have not used this option yet.

I can't stress how much better the sound quality is if you hardwire this radio to your car & home radio's. FM transmitters are a thing of the past, I discovered the P.I.E. Auxilary adapters.
I use the P.I.E.XM5 Hon98 Aux.Input Converter for my Honda Civic, which hardwires my radio, powers the radio, and I can hook up my ipod also.

Here are a few cons, nothing major
- It was at first very tough to take out of the vehicle & home dock, its loosened up a little.
- I read complaints about the brightness of the screen at night, while driving at night my whole car is illuminated blue, they need a screensaver option where it will dim if not touched in 15-30 seconds- I turned down the brightness, and this has helped.

Overall I definitely recommend if your looking for a simple/inexpensive radio.

Crutchfield Thanks for great service!!!

Good upgrade

Written by: Todd from Tampa, FL on December 8, 2006

I had one of the very old generation radios that had a seperate receiver and tuner. So I thought it was finally time to upgrade. Like the Sportster 4, this radio has a VERY weak FM modulator. You really need to get the separate FM modulator to truly enjoy this system. The features are great, it looks great and has been a big improvement over my old system.

Overall very happy with unit

Written by: Jesse from Thatcher, AZ on November 27, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit has some great features, and is small and compact. Got this unit for that reason, cause I mainly use it for work. The number one down fall on this unit is the built in FM modulator it comes in very weak. I had to go buy one of those cassette adaptors and plug it in using the line out jack. That solved that problem comes in loud and clear, at least if you if you still use a tape deck. But other than that I'm very satisfied with the unit.

Important note from Crutchfield: Current FCC rules limit the transmission strength of wireless FM transmitters to a point where transmission needs to take place very near your FM antenna. Pretty cool

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The features are pretty cool. The memo feature is one of the cooler things about the replay. It lets you store artists or songs and alerts you when they are on. Instructions lacked detail on using the included windshield or vent mount, not too hard to figure out though.

Receiver Features

Product Overview: The Sirius Starmate 4 is a portable plug-n-play Sirius Satellite Radio receiver. Along with the the Starmate 4 Sirius receiver, the package includes a wireless remote, magnetic antenna, FM extender antenna, cigarette lighter power adapter, an adjustable suction cup car mounting kit and vent mounting kit. An optional home kit (607SUPH1) is available for enjoying Sirius programming in your home or office.

Sirius Satellite Radio: Sirius Satellite Radio features more than 120 streams of original programming beamed coast-to-coast, including 65 streams of commercial-free, digital-quality music, plus news, talk, sports, entertainment, and children's programming.

Note: Satellite radio service is available only within the contiguous United States. Service is not available in Alaska and Hawaii.

FM Transmitter: The Starmate 4's built-in modulator allows you transmit Sirius radio programming to your vehicle's FM tuner, so you don't have to make any connections between the Sirius receiver and the radio. You can create a preset list of 5 suitable FM frequencies to use. You can select any frequency (in 0.2 MHz steps) between 88.1 MHz and 107.9 MHz. The FM modulator can be turned off if not in use.

Important Note from Crutchfield: Current FCC rules limit the transmission strength of wireless FM transmitters to a point where transmission needs to take place very near your FM antenna. Sirius includes extra wiring in order to address this issue, but Crutchfield strongly encourages customers to use an auxiliary input, wired FM modulator, or cassette adapter to ensure satisfaction with the performance and cosmetics of this satellite radio.

Direct Connection: Direct connection provides better audio performance than a wireless connection and removes the possibility of interference from local FM broadcasters. You can take advantage of the direct connection if your radio has an AUX IN or LINE IN to connect from the Starmate 4's mini-jack audio output.

Optional Cassette Adapter: You can also use an optional cassette adapter through the audio output of the Starmate 4 if your radio has a cassette player.

FM Direct Adapter: If your vehicle radio does not have an AUX or LINE IN or cassette player, you can use the optional SIRIUS FM Direct Adapter (607FMDA25) which provides a wired connection between your SIRIUS radio and your vehicle's radio, eliminating the outside static and interference you sometimes experience when using a wireless FM connection.

Display: The Starmate 4 tuner has a compact 4-line display. The Default screen displays the Channel Name and Number on the top line, the artist name on the second line, the song title on the third line, and the signal strength meter, channel category, clock, and preset bank on the fourth line. Momentarily pressing the display button changes the artist and song title to a large, scrolling one line display. Holding the display button for 1.5 seconds enters the channel list mode, making it easy to quickly search for music by category, artist, and song title. You can manually adjust the display's contrast and brightness controls for best viewing.

Search Modes: This unit gives you several ways to search for and select music or other programming:

  • Channel: Scroll through each channel in numerical order
  • Category: Scroll through each of the categories (Pop, Rock, Country, Hip-Hop, R&B/Urban, Electronic/Dance, Jazz/Standards, Classical, Latin & World)
  • Artist: Scroll through the artist names of currently playing songs
  • Song Title: Scroll through the titles of currently playing songs

Preset Tuning: The tuner allows you to store 30 presets in 3 separate banks (A, B, and C) of ten channels each. Preset channels can be tuned directly by selecting a preset band and pressing the preset number on the numeric keypad (unit or remote). While in the Preset Tuning mode, you can view the list of presets showing channel name, artist name, or song title.

Direct Tuning: You can directly enter the 3-digit channel numbers using the number keys on the Starmate 4 or the remote.

Memory Function (Memo): The Memo function allows you to capture and store information about the programming (artist/song info or sports team) on the currently tuned channel, up to 30 listings.

S-Seek: Once you have stored artist/song title information in memory, you can activate the S-Seek function to search for, and audibly alert you whenever the artist/song is playing on an incoming channel.

Game Alert: Once you have stored team information in memory, you can activate the Game Alert to search for, and audibly alert you whenever a programmed team is playing on an incoming channel.

Game Zone: This feature displays a list of the current sport matches that are on SIRIUS.

Jump Button: The Jump button is used to quickly tune to a channel that is accessed frequently and temporarily such as a traffic channel, a weather channel, a news channel, a sports channel or your favorite channel. Pressing the Jump button allows you to quickly tune to the specific channel you have programmed into the Jump button, and then tune back to the original channel by pressing the Jump button again. In the menu you can set the Jump button to provide a Traffic report instead.

Signal Indicator: You can check the strength of the Sirius satellite signal being received. When locating the antenna in your home, you should place the antenna in a spot that illuminates the maximum number of bars on the meter.

Instant Replay: You can record the audio of a channel for playback later. As soon as you tune to a channel the receiver starts storing the audio, enabling you to rewind and replay at any time. Once you start playing again, you can fast forward through anything you don't want to hear. You can store approximately 30 to 60 minutes of audio depending upon the channel to which you are tuned is stored.

FM Preset Button: The tuner has a special button called the FM Preset button, which turns on the built-in FM transmitter and begins transmitting on the next frequency from the FM frequency preset list.

Audio Level: The Audio Level setting adjusts the level of the audio output to the radio.

Parental Control: The Starmate 4 has the ability to lockout the use of any channel you do not want accessed without your permission. The locked channel will not appear when the user changes channels with the channel switch. When the user tries to directly access a locked channel, the "Enter Code" screen will be displayed, and the channel will not be accessed until the proper code is entered.

Time-Based Functions: The tuner has a built-in clock with the time data provided by the Sirius signal. The clock can be set for time zone and observance of Daylight Saving Time. Once the clock data is set, you can activate the following functions:
