Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this item for my husband because we have been Sirius subscribers for years and my husband always commented on how there was nothing for him to listen to on regular radio while he was at work. I thought this item would be a good surprise and boy was it ever. Not only is the radio very attactive, but the features are more extensive than the system we had in the car! The instructions were super simple and the sound quality is superb. My husband is estatic about his gift and I have found a new source for my electronic needs!!!

Nice portability

Written by: Bradford from Miami, FL on November 26, 2006

I have been using the Starmate unit without the boombox for about 6 months and just bought the boombox today. Normally I have the Starmate tuner in the bedroom and get a clear signal all over my apartment to the other fm radios to listen to sirius. Somehow the boombox diminishes the ability of the starmate unit to transmit the signal over fm. I tried adjusting the antenna (and removing it from the boombox), but it doesnt help. If you want to take your sirius anywhere with you, the boombox is great. Also, for listening to sirius on one radio at a time, it's great. But just an FYI...the distance you can get the sirius signal over fm when you hook up the radio to the boombox is less than when the radio stands by itself. I suspect this might be the case with all the boomboxes but I didnt know.
The boombox sounds pretty good, wish it had treble/bass controls, but still good.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The STB2 portable player for the Starmate receiver is very functional and easy to use. I would love to see the connector be available for the car and home adaptors. It provides very good sound quality and the option to play auxiliary devices is very handy in areas the receiver can not pick up a signal. I highly recommend this item if you are looking for a way to use your Starmate away from your vehicle. Only thing to make it better is to include a cigarette lighter adapter.

Product Research

Product Overview: The STB2 portable satellite radio boombox is designed to interface with the SIRIUS ST-2 Staramate Replay plug-and-play tuner. The boombox gives the plug-and-play receiver portability, allowing you to play the unit virtually anywhere. An auxiliary input lets you connect additional components. For the system to work, you'll need a subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio in addition to the tuner.

SIRIUS Satellite Radio: SIRIUS Satellite Radio features more than 125 streams of original programming beamed coast-to-coast, including 67 streams of commercial-free digital-quality music, plus news, talk, sports, entertainment, and children's programming.

Note: Satellite radio service is available only within the contiguous United States. Service is not available in Alaska and Hawaii.

Power Options: The boombox can be operated on household AC current when the supplied AC adapter is used. The unit can also operate using 8 "D" batteries, allowing you to take it with you wherever you go. The batteries are automatically bypassed whenever the AC adapter is plugged into the unit.

Antenna: The unit comes with a SIRIUS satellite antenna with a 16' 4" cable. The antenna cable has a single SMB connector. You must place the antenna in a location that has a relatively clear view of the SIRIUS satellite paths. For convenience, the antenna can be mounted to the 4 pegs on the back of the unit. The antenna has the following dimensions: Width=2.63", Height=1.341" (3.659" with antenna raised), Depth=3.236".

Note: SIRIUS has three satellites and antenna placement will depend upon where you live in the contiguous United States.

Inputs/Outputs: In addition to the inputs for the receiver, the DC power supply, and the antenna, the boombox has one mini-jack auxiliary input for plugging in an external audio device. For private listening, you can use the front-mounted headphone jack (3.5mm mini-jack) for plugging in a set of stereo headphones. When headphones are plugged in, the unit's speakers are muted.

Power Output: 5 watts RMS per channel.

Handle: The handle slides up from the top of the unit for easy portability.

  • Power: on/off
  • Volume: up/down
  • AUX: toggles between Starmate and the auxiliary source

Power Light: When the unit is on the power light glows green, when the batteries are low and need to be replaced, the power light glows red.
