Conveniently locks and unlocks your vehicle automatically

The VSK100 will sense the presence of your phone as it gets to within 10 to 15 feet, and will disarm and unlock your vehicle automatically, so you don't even have to take your phone out of your pocket. And when you walk away, your vehicle will lock and rearm itself automatically, the same way. (This feature is not yet available for Android users.)

Other features

The Viper SmartKey system includes a panic button, so you can set off an alarm in case of an emergency. Two auxiliary channels allow you to control additional actions like turning on the interior lights, for example. If your device can use Siri to control Bluetooth functions, you can use voice commands to access SmartStart to lock, unlock, and start your vehicle when you're in range. Please note that some features require this Viper SmartKey module to be installed with a compatible Viper remote start or security system in order to operate.

More details on the Viper VSK100 SmartKey Bluetooth® Module

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Viper VSK100 SmartKey Bluetooth module can lock and unlock the doors of your vehicle automatically without pressing a button. SmartKey works with your smartphone (and the free Directed SmartStart app v3.2 or newer), and can be used as a standalone product, or added to an existing Directed Electronics product (Viper, Python, Clifford), including security, remote start, and hybrid systems. SmartKey currently works in the US and Canada. No service plan is required.

Note: The VSK100 works with negative switching locks only. Any other type of door locking system such as positive switching, 5 wire reversal, or single wire door lock systems will require the 607451M (sold separately).

SmartKey Functionality: With SmartKey installed in your vehicle, your doors will automatically unlock when the SmartKey module pairs with your smartphone. Conversely, as you leave the vehicle and get out of Bluetooth range, the doors will automatically lock when your smartphone is no longer paired with the module. You can independently set a range for the locking and unlocking functions. You can also use the two auxiliary channels to perform other functions, such as window roll up/down or pop the trunk. When added to a Viper security or remote start system, the SmartKey module allows you to control your car with your smartphone: lock/arm, unlock/disarm, remote start.

Advanced SmartKey Functions: Other SmartKey functions include:

  • Disable SmartKey: The SmartKey system can be temporarily disabled by sending an active lock or unlock command. When you are again out of range, the passive locking/unlocking is resumed.
  • Shut Off SmartKey: SmartKey can be completely turned off if you wish to disable passive locking/unlocking. You will need to manually re-enable SmartKey when you wish to resume.
  • Sleep Mode: When you are parking the vehicle for an extended period, it is recommended that the Sleep Mode be activated to prevent it from using any battery current. You can "wake up" the module by simply sending a connect request.
  • Power Saver Mode: After 14 hours with no command activity, the SmartKey module enters Power Saver Mode. The SmartKey device remains active so you can connect with it and send commands, but the reduced auto-connect polling lowers the current draw from the battery. Power Saver Mode is automatically exited when you return to the vehicle and a command is sent.

Smartphone Compatibility: The VSK100 SmartKey module works with your smartphone through the free Directed SmartStart App. The app is available from the iTunes App Store. Basic Control is supported on iPhone 3G and newer. The SmartKey passive lock/unlock feature requires Version 3.2 of the SmartStart app, and requires iOS 6 or newer. SmartKey is compatible with iPhone 5s, 5c, 5, 4s, and 4. Version 3.2 of the SmartStart app for Android is not yet available (as of 6/17/14). Windows and Blackberry are not supported at this time.

Operating Range: During normal operations, you should be able to connect with your SmartKey Bluetooth system from up to 200 feet away, however you should set the passive lock/unlock range at approximately 10-15 feet. The range can be affected by local interference, which direction you are from the vehicle (facing it from the side, front, or rear), and whether you are moving or standing still. Your smartphone will indicate the Bluetooth connection status on its display.

Installation: The VSK100 can easily interface with your existing Directed security, remote start or hybrid system. The Bluetooth Control Module is connected between the existing Directed control module and the system's Control Center via the supplied cable. A simple power and ground connection is also needed. If you are installing the VSK100 as a standalone unit, Door Lock, Door Unlock, Start/Stop, and Trunk wires have to be connected in addition to Power and Ground.

Multiple Vehicles: If you have a SmartKey Bluetooth module installed in more than one vehicle, you can choose which vehicle to control right from your compatible smart device. The Cars Screen lets you name and attach a picture for each vehicle you wish to control. You can select the desired vehicle from the Cars Screen.

Q
I'm not really concerned with the unlocking my car door, I want to know how reliable is the remote start/security system of this smartkey?

A
When added to a compatible remote start system and installed properly, the system works very well when your smartphone is within range (up to 200 feet). I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

Q
will this work on a 2004 VW passat tdi?
swgrdoc  Dec 23, 2015

A
I had a different question. The box lists compatibly with iPhone 3-5 . of course iPhone 6 is out although I don't own one I contacted Viper via email and asked them if it was compatible with a 6. They got back to me the next day and said that it was. That being said, I would have no way of knowing vehicle compatibility but would recommend that you either check with your local VW tech or better yet, send Viper and email and check with them.

Q
Does this require an authorized viper dealer to install or can you do the add on install yourself?

A
Hi you installed your own just I did mine the whole Smartstart system
constantine  Oct 27, 2015
A
If you have access to the main control module, then you can add it yourself, but if that is hidden, it is probably best to have it installed.
adam  Oct 26, 2015
A
Well I work for a company that installs Astro starts so I have acces to the techs and have been around electronics most of my life. In saying that, you can probably install it yourself. I don't remember there being much to it as long as you have an Astro start or viper start to tie into.

Q
Does the car start if you have remote start upon unlock? Do you still need the keys if you have remote start installed or can you drive without inserting the keys?
ryan  May 20, 2015
2 answers
A
Yes you still need your key to actually drive car. If car is running and someone gains access they would have to press brake pedal to put car in gear, when you press brake pedal without the key being inserted and turn to the on position cat will automatically turn off, also if you do not have the key the steering wheel will not unlock so there are several obstacles to overcome. So if car is running driving it is almost impossible they would still have all the same obstacles to defeat if they were stealing it.
lenwood  May 20, 2015
A
No,for the first part - The engine will stop if you do not insert and turn the key with in a certain amount of time. It is like a time out

Q
how many phone can I pair to control the smartkey bluetooth module?
cu  Mar 16, 2015
1 answer
A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Only one phone can be "paired" at a time to control the module. However, you could have multiple phones with the app on it to control it. As long as we're only using one at a time. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
