Our take on the Kenwood KDC-BT652U

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Enjoy the advantages of Bluetooth® in your car
Kenwood's KDC-BT652U CD receiver takes your phone out of your hand when you're driving and lets you stay focused on the road. When a call comes in, just touch the dedicated "phone" button and talk hands-free — it's as if the caller is sitting next to you. And outgoing calls are easy too, since the receiver can store your phone book in its memory.

Bluetooth audio streaming connects this receiver to songs stored on your compatible music player — with no wires cluttering up your dash and console.

Kenwood KDC-BT652U

Your digital music, at your command
Once you plug your iPod® into the receiver's front-panel USB input, you'll be flicking through your albums, artists, and playlists in a few seconds. If you've got lots of music on your iPod, you'll love the dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys that simplify your search when you want to hear a particular song or album. Your device will charge faster too, thanks to the 1-amp output of the USB port.

Music control for Android
If you store your music on an Android device, go to the Android market and download Kenwood's free Music Control app. You'll enjoy a variety of search and playback features when your phone is plugged into the front-panel USB port.

Need more options?
If you're addicted to Pandora® Internet radio on your iPhone®, you'll appreciate the built-in controls that allow you to scroll through your Pandora® stations, bookmark songs, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face. The front-panel auxiliary input offers an instant connection for a portable satellite radio or another sound source. Last but not least, you can play all kinds of CDs, even discs that you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod or iPhone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood KDC-BT652U is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1 + EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. Bluetooth Technology is a short-range wireless radio connectivity technology that was developed as a cable replacement for mobile phones and other electronic devices. Bluetooth operates in 2.4 GHz frequency range and transmits voice and data at speeds up to 1 megabit per second.

Bluetooth Profiles: In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

Pairing: Your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone must be paired with the KDC-BT652U before hands-free operation. You can register up to five Bluetooth enabled cell-phones with the Kenwood head unit (only one paired phone can be used at a time).

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KDC-BT652U. Visit http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/bt/index.php for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Integrated Microphone: The Kenwood KDC-BT652U features an integrated front-panel microphone for added convenience, so you don't have to mount an external microphone inside your vehicle.

Note: There is no mic input for adding an external microphone.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KDC-BT652U can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also features an integrated microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-99 seconds. The KDC-BT652U also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KDC-BT652U, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
      • Speed (Preset) Dialing: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's Control Knob.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KDC-BT652U. Up to 600 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long and each name can be up to 50 characters long.  Stored phone numbers can be categorized by General, Home, Office, Mobile, or Other. You can search each category of the phone book in alphabetical order.
      • Call Log: The Call Log is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Kenwood KDC-BT652U also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The KDC-BT652U will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Next/Previous Track, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The KDC-BT652U also supports audio streaming of music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker), but without control or metadata. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to view and control streaming music apps.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Bluetooth Detailed Settings: The KDC-BT652U offers the following Bluetooth Detailed Settings, so you can configure the unit to suit your needs.

    • Call Beep: You can choose to output a beep from your vehicle's speaker's when a call comes in, or you can turn this function off.
    • Speaker Output: You can select whether the call beep/caller's voice and streaming audio is heard through only the front speakers or all speakers.
    • Mic Gain: Adjusts the volume of the external microphone.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: The KDC-BT652U can play MP3 (8-320 kbps), WMA (32-192 kbps), and AAC (8-320 kbps) files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo, and Long file name formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 50 folders, and 255 files per folder (512 maximum number of files and folders). During MP3/WMA/AAC playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (ver. 1.x/2.x) and WMA Tag information - up to 60 characters.

Text Scroll: The KDC-BT652U will display CD text or Audio file text. You can set the text scrolling feature to three different modes (Auto, Once, or Off) to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Music Search: The Kenwood AM/FM CD receiver features a Music Search feature which allows you to scroll through and select your MP3/WMA/AAC music folders and files, as well as scroll through your audio CD's music tracks using the head unit's rotary knob.

    • Repeat Play: Track, File, or Folder
    • Random Play: Disc or Folder
    • Scan Play: Track or File (plays the first 10-seconds of each music track on a disc or music file in a folder)

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

CD Read: This function sets the method for reading a CD disc. You can choose between two modes.

    • CD1: Automatically distinguishes between audio file disc and music CD when playing a CD or CD-R/RW disc.
    • CD2: When unable to play a special formatted CD, set this function to CD2 to force playing. Some music CD  discs may be unplayable even when set to this mode.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Reload: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust.

    USB/Aux Inputs

USB Port: The Kenwood KDC-BT652U features a front panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-up cover. The USB port enables connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device with MP3 (8-320 kbps), WMA (32-192 kbps), and AAC (8-320 kbps) music files. The USB port is compatible with USB mass storage class devices that support the FAT16 or FAT32 file system. Your USB device should only have a maximum of 8 folder layers, 255 folders, and 255 files per folder - with a maximum of 65,025 files and folders. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

Music Editor Compatible: The Kenwood KDC-BT652U supports the PC application, Kenwood Music Editor Lite (ver.1.1.0). When you playback audio files that have been stored on your USB (MSC) device using Kenwood Music Editor Lite through this unit, you can search a file by title, album, or artist name using the head unit's Music Search function.

System Requirements: The Kenwood Music Editor Light (ver.1.1.0) Windows-based software can be downloaded for free from Kenwood.com to your PC. The Kenwood Music Editor Light is compatible with the following Windows Microsoft Operating Systems.

    • Windows XP Professional, Home Edition SP2 or later (32-bit)
    • Windows Vista (32/64-bit)
    • Windows 7 (32/64-bit)

Note: Not compatible with Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Zune, or Android.

Aux In: The unit is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input that can be used to input audio from a portable audio source, such as a portable MP3 player. The Aux input must be turned on to function. The unit has 3 auxiliary input modes.

    • On1: Outputs the sound of the external unit connected to the Aux terminal when switched to the Aux source.
    • On2: Activates the attenuator function when turning on the power with the auxiliary source selected. This prevents the noise when no external unit is connected to the Aux terminal. Turn off the attenuator function when listening to output from an external unit.
    • Off: Disables the selection of the Aux source.

Auxiliary Display: The KDC-BT652U allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video, or TV.

    iPod/Android Control

iPod Direct Connection: The KDC-BT652U's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the optional Kenwood USB Direct Connection Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the USB/iPod cable that comes with your iPod/iPhone. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the KDC-BT652U.

iPod DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of music files and podcasts stored on your iPod or iPhone, as well as music apps streamed to your iPhone.

iPod Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.

    • Head Unit: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigate your iPod's music by Playlist, Artists, Album, Genre, Composer, Song, or Podcast. You can search these categories alphabetically or using a percentage search (0.5%, 1%, 5%, 10%). The head unit supports Repeat (file) & Random (folder) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone.
    • iPod/App Mode: In iPod/App mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You can also listen to your favorite music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Kenwood head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your apps. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode.

Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Pandora App: The Pandora App (free) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Kenwood KDC-BT652U using your connected Apple iPhone, via the Kenwood KCA-iP102 USB/iPod connector cable (sold separately), or the USB/Dock cable supplied with your iPhone. The Kenwood KDC-BT652U provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your station list and sort them by date or alphabetically (A-Z). You can also skip song tracks within a station. You can even give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS3 or later) with the latest version of the Pandora application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

iPod/ Display: The KDC-BT652U will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. If you choose to operate your connected iPod/iPhone via its clickwheel or touchscreen controls, the KDC-BT652U will not display your iPod/iPhone's music information (the head unit will instead display "APP/iPod").

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Music Control for Android Smartphone: The Kenwood Music Control app for Android organizes your Android smartphone's music, while providing quick and easy search capability from the Kenwood CD receiver. The free Kenwood Music Control App for Android can be downloaded onto your Android smartphone from the Android Market place. Your Android smartphone must be running Android OS 2.2 or later. Once the app is downloaded and has a chance to organize all the stored music on your Android smartphone, you can connect your Android smartphone to the Kenwood CD receiver via USB (your compatible Android smartphone must be recognized as a USB mass storage class device; not compatible with MTP protocol). The Kenwood Music Control app offers the following Android supported functions.

    • Song Management: Music stored in your Android smartphone can be navigated from the Kenwood CD receiver. Songs can be easily selected by searching for a Song title, Artist name, Album label, or Genre.
    • Song Information Display: Song information such as Artist name, Song title, and Album label are displayed on the connected Kenwood CD receiver.
    • Mood Playlist: Playlists can be created by classifying songs into categories by type of mood. Songs are analyzed and classified into the following categories of moods - High Energy (Active/Powerful/Core), Acoustic (Detailed/Simple/Smooth/Easy), Standard (Dynamic/Rockin/Vivid), Stylistic (Cool/Urban/Trance)
    • Intro Skip: This function allows you to choose and listen to only the hook-lines of songs stored in your Android smartphone.

Note: When the Kenwood Music Control app is first downloaded it will require some time to populate all the music, so we suggest doing this overnight.

Music Files Format Supported by Music Control app for Android:

Codec Extension Bit Rate Sampling Frequency
AAC .aac, m4a up to 160 kbps 8-48 kHz
    MP3 .mp3 8-320 kbps n/a
    PCM/WAV .wav n/a n/a

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-BT652U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-BT652U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-BT652U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

3-Way Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 3-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Bass Boost: In addition, The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2 or Off).

Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

6ch/2.5V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-BT652U features front, rear and subwoofer 2.5-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-BT652U features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-BT652U offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Tel Mute: The KDC-BT652U features a cell-phone mute wire (tan) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood KDC-BT652U features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of four tuning methods: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), Manual Tune, or Direct Access (via remote).

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

Tuner Presets: The KDC-BT652U's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. The Kenwood KDC-BT652U offers two preset modes.

    • Normal: You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets (total of 24).
    • Mix: A total of 6 preset stations can be assigned to the head unit's 6 preset buttons, regardless of AM/FM band. This lets you recall a preset station without switching between bands.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

Direct Access Tuning: You can directly access an AM/FM station by entering in the frequency number using the include wireless remote control.

Mono Mode: The Mono mode improves the radio's FM reception, but the stereo effect will be lost.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KDC-BT652U features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The head unit includes a cloth pouch for storing the face-plate when detached. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features a single-line, 13-character, bluish-white backlit fluorescent display.

Illumination Dimmer: The head unit's fluorescent display has two dimmers settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can switch the display dimmer setting On or Off. The head unit's button illumination has an independent dimmer setting from the display which lets you set the button illumination dimmer to LVL1, LVL2, or Off. The Kenwood logo and eject button remain the same brightness.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face and button illumination is "keyed." When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KDC-BT652U comes with an IR remote control (RC-405) for wireless operation of the head unit. The remote will control Audio, CD, USB, and Tuner functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

    • Numeric Keypad: The wireless remote control features a numeric keypad (0-9) which allows direct track access of your music tracks & files (from CD or USB), as well as AM/FM presets.
    • Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit also features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with the optional PAC SWI-RC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (541SWIRC, sold separately);  or the optional Metra ASWC Steering Wheel Control Interface Adapter (120ASWC, sold separately).

    Great Receiver

Written By JohnC, Rathdrum, ID on Monday, April 22, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound and quality of this receiver are very good. I had difficulty getting my phone to pair with the bluetooth function. It took a 45 minute helping hand from one of Crutchfield's very capable techs. Without his help, I never would have got it to pair. The iPod control function is overly complicated and cumbersome to use. The lighting of the receiver is very visible at night, but very hard to see during the day. These small issues do not detract from the good sound and the very usable controls (iPod usage excepted). For the money, this is a very hard receiver to beat.
    Pros:
Good quality build Good sound Good basic controls Looks good on the dash
    Cons:
Readout display is hard to see during the day iPod controller is not user friendly User Manual is poorly written and sometimes confusing

    Great HU

Written By Dan L, Nashville, tn on Monday, April 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great radio HU and great customer support. Only problem was not a Crutchfield issue. It was the user manual of the unit by Kenwood. For God sake if you are going to sell in the USA get a manual that can write on the language. Half the instructions were very poorly organized and very difficult to follow. The other half were not much better. Typical when someone was thinking in Chinaese and trying to put it done in English. This is the reason I rated "ease of use" at only "3"
    Pros:
Easy install, great sound, good array of features
    Cons:
    Very poor user manual

I am very pleased with the features and sound quality of this Kenwood unit. My CRV had an after market Alpine unit installed when I purchased it and I wanted Bluetooth capability added for a low cost. The Kenwood was the perfect solution. I have been using it for 2 weeks now and am very happy with the sound quality as compared to the Alpine.

    Features. Sound Quality. Bluetooth. Cost

    KDC-BT652U has poor microphone

Written By SS, FRESNO, CA on Saturday, March 09, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

KDC-BT652U dramatically improved my Nissan Sentra stereo system. The price and sound quality is great for the price. It doesn't have all of the fancy color schemes, but I wasn't interested in that. I was raving about this unit until I tested the built-in microphone. The people who called me described the background noise like driving on the freeway with your windows down... except my windows weren't down and I was driving 30mph. Since there are no pre-outs on the back of the unit for an external microphone, I'm returning the KDC-BT652U and upgrading for a better microphone.
    Pros:
    Excellent sound for the price.
    Cons:
Microphone picks up too much background noise.

Good unit for the cost. This is my second one for another vehicle. Only bad things are the Bluetooth mic picks up a lot of back ground noise and that there is no mute/ att on dash display only on remote.
    Pros:
Good cost for the quality and all the features.
    Cons:
Little difficult to use. Bluetooth picks up too much background noise.

    2002 S10 pickup

I would have given 5 stars but the wire harness that was sent with original order was wrong. The harness was for a 2002 S10 but didnt fit my truck. After calling a Crutchfield cutomer service person, I explained my problem but the representative had no answer except "it should fit". I asked him to send me the one for a 2001 S10,which he agreed to do, and it solved the problem. The truck is a 2002 model but was built in 2001. Crutchfield should take note of this.

    Great choice!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my 2004 F-150 to replace the stock cd player. I wanted something with an aux interface; I figured the Bluetooth would be gravy because I had read some trouble reports with some folks' phones.

I got the unit in (the included kit was easy to use -- I soldered the wires together and it was very neat and clean once I zip-tied it all together) and tested pairing up my phone (Samsung Galaxy S II). It paired up just fine and I was able to make a test call and play music. Both worked just fine.

Just for kicks I tested Pandora. It worked just fine over Bluetooth, too! The like/dislike buttons didn't work, but that's no big deal. I'm just tickled that I don't have to use my aux cable (except for with my ipod).

This seems to be a good head unit for the money. I have other Kenwood radio products and I knew the quality would be high.
    Pros:
    Bluetooth Radio Data (Station/Track info)
    Cons:
Dimmer doesn't really dim it at all -- I wish there was a connection to my truck's dimmer control.

    Not so great with Android.

Written By Ed D, Princeton, NJ on Saturday, December 15, 2012

Purchased this unit to replace an older JVC that didn't have Bluetooth. Was also interested in streaming Pandora from my Android to the unit. The BT audio works, but you can't use the "Pandora Radio" functionality unless you have an iPhone plugged into the USB. You can still use Pandora on an Android through BT, but only in BT audio mode, which means no artist or song ID on the unit. It only says "BT Audio" all the time. You can still skip forward to a next track, which is nice.

Getting a refurb unit for $110 was a deal. Not sure if it would be worth it at normal retail, when for about $20 more you can get the 752 would have the Pandora radio functions that would work properly with Android, as well as HD radio.
    Pros:
Internal Mic for HF phone works great. Easy to set up and use. Sounds great.
    Cons:
Pandora radio only works with Apple product that is plugged into USB. No HD radio.

Great look, nice features. Not so easy to use. Needs "quick buttons" for sources (uses a "source" button that has to be repeatedly pushed to reach desired source). No quick "on/off" button. Round knob is for volume but also doubles as "function" button when pushed which is counter-intuitive to typical "on/off" feature when pushed.
    Pros:
Lot's of features for the money; nice look
    Cons:
Not so user-friendly; some fancy features limited (e.g. i-Phone compatibility only)

    Bluetooth not very good

Written By dave, phoenix, az on Monday, October 29, 2012

I bought this unit hoping to bring my car's audio system into this decade, with iPod control and Bluetooth streaming and handsfree. Unfortunately, I found out that using multiple devices (an IPod and phone) is too much to ask of the system. On the majority of factory radios, you get in and the radio knows that you want to use the IPod for music and the phone for handsfree calls. The Kenwood KDC-BT652U requests that you choose EVERY single time which device you will use for music and which you will use for calling. It has no memory for preferences.
    Pros:
    Quick to set up
    Cons:
    Doesn't remember settings for bluetooth

This unit has what I was looking for, a little more power, USB input, Remte control and Aux Input. I wanted to connect my XM radio through my stereo unit and not the FM modulator(when traveling must change stations) It has a clearer sound using the Aux Input. I loaded a lot of songs on a thumb drive and they play through the USB input, very nice.
    Pros:
Inputs - Aux and USB, power, remote control
    Cons:
can be a little difficult to adjust playback variations for USB, may need to refer to manual a few times.

    Not Bad

Written By mike o, greeley co on Monday, October 15, 2012

I bought this for my wifes birthday, the idea was to build her a mobile office since she is in sales and always on the road meeting clients.

I was replacing a Kenwood that i had purchased when i first got the car about three years ago. The install was a pain due to partially my approach of breaking the required tabs on the universal mount. The second issue was the wiring harness that was sent would not connect to the car, the saving grace was the fact that i was replacing a kenwood and just used the old wiring harness.

The stereo is great and has a lot of great features compared to the old kenwook, Bluetooth can be a bit tempermental and would require removing the pairing from both the receiver and our iphones. Streaming over bluetooth is amazing and works great, this is the stereo you should get if that is what you are looking for. I was looking for a solution to do hands free calling and this does not seem to meet that need. While the car is not moving, there are a lot of echoing and sounds slow. When the car is in motion, all you can hear is a lot of background noise and can not hear her voice at all.

Overall i think this is a great device but not what i was looking for.
    Pros:
great device, streams music over bluetooth amazingly and has a lot of great features that make this a great buy.
    Cons:
very poor hands free calling. laggy and echos while car is stationary. While the car is in motion, it is absolutely worthless.

Works great! I love the options. The best part of the whole experience was how helpful the Tech support team is. This system was actually pretty easy to install, but I called the tech people 3 times to varify that I was doing it right. Yes I am one of those guys. They were patient and extremly knowledgeable with every aspect of the installation and set up. They even helped with some of the setting options on the system so I didn't have to wade throught the manual. Thanks!
    Pros:
    System and Crutchfield Tech support.
    Cons:
    none

Plugged it in and everything worked right away as advertised, blue tooth and all. More than I hoped for!
    Pros:
Plays my itunes or Pandora either by blue tooth or plugged in. Answers phone calls from multiple cell phones that are paired, which is great since my son also uses the car, so either of our phones works when we get in. Followed all instructions and in less than an hour it was installed and we were checked out on its operation. I've never put in my own stereo before.
    Cons:
    None.

All the BlueTooth functions work great. All the parts for installation and the install paperwork made for an easy swap out. Got one for Fathers day, and liked it alot, bought another for the mini-van.
    Pros:
Nice product for the price and options. Bluetooth functions.
    Cons:
All other illumination except for display can not be dimmed.

Wow. Kids got this for me for fathers day because THEY didn't like the existing unit in my car. I was less than excited when I read that Pandora and Bluetooth were. Compatible with iPhone only but what the heck...I installed anyway. Much to my surprise my blackberry torch synced right up and works great. Only issue is Pandora must be streamed from the Bb vs using the USB cord therefore the thumbs up and down buttons on the deck don't work. You can update the decks firmware and this could fix the Pandora thing but I'm in no hurry to try it. If you want a deck with the latest technology on a budget, don't pass this deal up!
    Pros:
    Price, features, ease of use/sync
    Cons:
Pandora not perfect with blackberry but docs don't claim that it should be.

Bluetooth Excellent After Firmware Update, Sounds Great.

Written By Rockin Rog, Desperate, Ontario Canada. on Saturday, June 23, 2012

At first I was having issues with Bluetooth connectivity. What was happening was the unit wasn't auto connecting after I turned my truck off however the unit was enabling BT. Was back to square one as this was the sole reason I swapped out my perfectly good Sony Car Stereo. Was thinking that my new Motorola RAZR Cell Phone from Rogers Canada was the issue because I had recently had warranty done to it after it wouldn't power on. Anyhow I headed over to Kenwood.ca and found under the support tab that there was a firmware update for the stereo that had fixes for bluetooth issues. After applying the update I was in like flint....the stereo works jack now..auto connects, streams audio flawless, phone conversations are great, downloaded my phone contacts and has a cool name display when people call. I also like that Kenwood used the line display lcd instead of what most other car stereos have which resembles a washed out liquid crystal that appears dull and washed out. If you need to update the firmware you need to download the file onto a computer, burn it to a blank CD, place the CD into your car stereo and press the settings button to a certain menu to apply the update. These instructions are clearly printed out out in the file you download and is easy to do.
    Pros:
Bluetooth, Price, Appearance, Clarity, Firmware Updates,
    Cons:
Had to update firmware by burning the update to a CD only, couldn't simply flash from a USB memory stick.

I will give a 5 of 5, but I wish the clock would display when you have the song title playing. Or the full song title displayed then go to the clock. Other than that, this is the best car stereo I have purchased. I used to purchase by salesman suggestions. No More! I will purchase by reviews. That is what decided this (these) purchase. I was so pleased with the one I put in my work truck I replaced my JVC crap in my personal car. The only problem I had was the one for my car had a problem with the RCA jacks. (very bad static) My car has two amps one for the deck , one for the band-pass sub. I thought I did something wrong and went over everything two times. Then I thought to swap work truck with car deck. Truck, no RCA plug-ins. The deck worked great in my car, no static and the one put in the truck, sounds great due to no use of the RCA's. I am very happy with my purchase. I don't think because you have a couple little problems the rating should be lower. I also called Crutchfield "tech support" and they conferred that the deck is probably the problem and to send it back. After i did the deck swap I have no need unless is fails further, which I'm sure it won't. Great customer service and will definitely purchase from Crutchfield again.
    Pros:
Great sound, all kinds of features I can't even use. Tight sound with or without a separate amplifier.
    Cons:
I would like a clock display no matter what device or mode you are using.

Bluetooth sucks, the rest is good.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am no audiophile, so not qualified to talk about sound quality. It seems adequate to me. I bought this stereo because 1) it connects to my ipod / ipod touch - which is does admirably. and 2) because it has built-in bluetooth, which appeals to me because my BT headset is always out of batteries when i need it. Sadly, the BT connection is awful, it connects one time out of 10, the rest of the time it just connects then disconnects repeatedly, my phone buzzing away in my pocket with notifcations. I have read the manual, tried everything in there, and still no result. Its a mystery. Sometimes deleting the device then reconnecting work, sometimes starting the pairing from my phone works, sometimes starting the pairing from the device works... in general, the bluetooth part of the stereo simply does not work. I don't think that I have a bad unit, i just think the unit is badly designed

Apart from that, its great, but I feel that a large part of the value proposition is missing

As far as installation goes, its easy with the harness supplied by Crutchfield. My advice - throw away all your different types of connectors, crimps, caps etc, and learn to use a soldering iron when joining the wires together. There is nothing worse than finally getting the stereo in place only to find one of the speakers doesn't work because a cheap butt connector came loose.
    Pros:
Cheap. Great Ipod connectivtiy. Looks acceptable
    Cons:
    The bluetooth connectivity reconnects constantly.

I could not ask for a better head unit... It meets all of the requirements to complete the entire sound system, from highs, mids, and lows... It is the complete package!!! Well worth the money, especially for the craftsmanship and quality provided by Kenwood!!!
    Pros:
3 pre-jack outputs to control and separate the lows from the mids and highs; multiple combinations for tuning your system for the perfect sound. The Bluetooth is very simple to operate and hands free with the sound coming through the speakers, delivering the same clarity as the Pandora internet radio. It's a great unit with multiple media options!!!
    Cons:
I have not found any deficiencies with it...

    Very Good, needs small improvements

Written By VW-Westy, Southern Cal on Sunday, April 01, 2012

Excellent, looks and sounds great. I'd buy another after its upgraded.
    Pros:
easy to use, easy to install in an old buggy. Blue Tooth works with music or mobile Iphone4, Pandora is slick, USB works fine with the iPhone4.
    Cons:
The remote control is tooo small, its made for little kids; the face of the unit could be tilted upward for improved viewing; Pushing the tiny Source button for power off/on is ridiculous but it seems most of the new radios have a similar design. Teeny tiny instruction book had to be enlarged on a copy machine to read. How about a user manual in PDF file format so we can print it ourselves?

    Great stereo

Written By Jimmy T, West Melbourne, FL on Wednesday, March 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this unit, it is great. When I open the hatch of my jeep and put a thumb drive in the USB port of the stereo, I can control the system with the remote while I do other things at the rear of my jeep. I have not had the oputunity to try the blue tooth yet, so I have no review on it.
    Pros:
The remote make it easy to control the stereo whithout taking your eyes off the road. It has a lot of useful features and setttings.
    Cons:
It does not automatically switch to radio when you take out the CD, also you have to push the source button a number of time to get to the radio function. The delay between functions is a little long.

unit is an easy install. bluetooth is a bit cumbersome setting up even following the directions is kinda rough but it's doable and worth it.
    Pros:
Bluetooth mic built into the face plate is worth the price alone.
    Cons:
the screen doesn't scroll the mp3 names if you have you're ipod is set to double rather than just stereo and for the radio you can't title your radio stations. really really petty "cons" there really are no cons

Overall Great stereo with some flaws

Written By Justin R, Davenport, IA on Tuesday, March 13, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a great stereo. Install went smooth, and setup is easy if you have the manual to follow. The display is very clean and easy to read, if not a little to bright, even on the dim setting. Bluetooth synchs up well, and sounds great with hands-free calling and audio streaming from my android phone. My only complaints are the radio reception, and the display options. Stations that came in clear on my OEM stereo are staticy or don't come in at all with this stereo. This isn't a big deal to me since I now stream most of my music from my phone, but still a little annoying. My other problem is the display button and options. The button to change between artist/title, station name/frequency, or clock, is very small (in fact the smallest button on the stereo) and there is no corresponding button on the remote, so your forced to find this little button and press it 3 - 4 times every time you want to see what time it is or what station your on. As mentioned in the other review (and another annoyance) you can only see either the text displays OR the clock, not both at the same time.
    Pros:
Bluetooth synchs great and sounds great. Easy installation and setup.
    Cons:
Tuner reception is low, display button is small and hard to press and only displays clock OR radio text.
