Step up to the big screen

Make a big change in your travel time by installing Kenwood's DDX790 DVD receiver with its stunning 6.95" touchscreen display. And this great-looking receiver is backed by the Kenwood Excelon 2-year warranty.

Kenwood DDX790

The DDX790's motorized touchscreen offers impressive picture quality.

The DDX790 does more than look good, though. It'll enrich your in-car audio/video experience with a variety of tools: easy-to-use iPod® controls, access to music and video apps through your iPhone®, and Bluetooth® hands-free calling and audio streaming. And you can use that big touchscreen to change sources, choose music, select DVD menu items, or adjust EQ settings with just a few quick touches of your fingertip. For a final touch, you can even set this Kenwood's control buttons to match the color of your vehicle's dash illumination.

Bluetooth that's easy to use

The DDX790's built-in Bluetooth sets new marks for ease of use. Kenwood's Simple Secure Pairing system will automatically detect and pair phones in close proximity to the receiver — with no searches, PIN codes, or other hassles. Your phonebook transfers quickly to the receiver, so it's easy to make outgoing calls — you can even use voice dialing with compatible phones. And the DDX790 will even inform you when you receive a text message on your phone.

When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5 through Bluetooth, you can engage Siri through Kenwood's Siri Digital Assistant Control. Just press a button and talk to Siri through the included Bluetooth microphone and hear her answers through the car's speakers.

Cool app compatibility

With your iPhone plugged into the DDX790's USB input, you can control Pandora® Internet radio, with easy access to your stations, "thumbs-up" and "thumbs-down" ratings, and other major functions. If you have an iPhone 4 or 4S, you can watch Netflix content on the built-in screen whenever you're parked, or send video to a screen in the back so your passengers can watch while you drive. And you can download Garmin's "Streetpilot" app for iPhone, then use the receiver's screen for navigation.

Play all your other media, too

Of course the DDX790 plays CDs and DVDs, along with recordable discs loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. You can enjoy other A/V sources by plugging them into the A/V input. The receiver works with the SiriusXM tuner (not included) to bring you the wide variety of music, sports, and entertainment offered by satellite radio. You'll also have control over the music and video content on your iPod from the touchscreen, so finding the tune you want to hear is a snap.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

I switched from a Pioneer AVH to this model because I was looking for a unit with XM capability. My first thought when I started using the unit was that it was very basic. If you are looking for a unit that has some flashy looks then this one isn't for you. It's impossible to change the screen colors leaving the black/blue/white theme on there all the time. I wish there were some other options for this. As far as sound quality I would give this an A+. I have a 500w Alpine amp and a 10" Kicker sub. This radio has a MUCH better EQ system than my old head unit. It really made my system come alive. What it lacks in looks it makes up for with sound quality 5 times over. Overall I would buy this again. Especially for the money.

Pros: Sound quality. Easy setup. Great EQ.

    Cons: Boring looks and style.

I purchased a refurbished unit and unfortunately it was defective. The display flickers intermittently and turns white after a few minutes of operation. The only way to see anything on the screen again is to cycle the ignition or turn the unit off and back on.

I give it 5 stars because it is a great unit! The only down side to this is its only compatible with iPhones and iPods. I have an android and do not planning on switching it. But over all. The Bluetooth connects to my phone great! And does play all my music. The only thing that is a down fall is I live In minnesota and when you start the car in the morning and the blue tooth will only pick up the telephone part not the music. So what I have to do is shut off my car and open my door to turn the radio off. Then restart my car. But other then that a great radio!

Awesome product. Being refurbished at this price was a great deal. It's a beautiful product and it fit perfectly into my car. Sound quality was above and beyond as well. The touch screen is super responsive and very quick with no lag.

Cons: Hooking it up was a little difficult, but that was my fault!

Over all this is a really good stereo

Pros: Its made by Kenwood.. It's easy to use, you can use a custom background image, the load time on the USB and the DVDs is pretty quick I would say it takes about ten seconds or so not bad IMO. The display is great the images show clear. If you have album art on any of the the devices it'll show the album art which I think is really cool. There's a lot extras in this Kenwood stereo. All in all it's a great buy.

Cons: When streaming music through Bluetooth it for some odd reason turns off the Subs!!!. Maybe it's something I did wrong but I'm not sure because everything else is in order. If anyone else knows how to keep the Subs on when streaming music through Bluetooth please help a brotha out. I would give it a five star but due to the problem of my subs not playing only when I stream music through my IPhone 5 I had to take that extra star but overall it's a great stereo

Crutchfield response on March 5, 2014 This problem arose because the default setting for Bluetooth on Kenwood receivers is that the incoming signal will only play through the front speakers. Our tech support team contacted Jerome to help him change that setting from "Front" to "All", which enables the incoming Bluetooth audio signal to play through his full system, including his subwoofers. That's the kind of service you get when purchasing from Crutchfield.

Great stereo, replaced factory unit in 2013 challenger base model. The sound was better even from factory speakers, can't wait to replace speakers to make it even better. Couldn't be happier. The screen is flawless for dvds. The integration wiring was intimidating at first glance, but was easy to install and worked correctly the first time. Had to cut off mounting tabs or rests for factory radio. Easy to do and radio fits in dash very nicely with the adapter that was included.

    Pros: Bluetooth Backup camera Sirius

Cons: Unattractive screen while listening to radio.

Overall this is a good unit it does everything anyone can want out of a unit like this and more. It does has a lot of flash or any graphics that jumps around the screen.

If a little more flash I suggest you look at the higher end models, will cost more but it worth it.

Pros: Expandability, good sound, iPhone friendly

    Cons: No screen graphics

As always I can count on kenwood to deliver a solid product. For far to long manufacturers were ignoring the GUI aspect of in dash monitor/head units. Pioneer got on board first but kenwood perfected it IMHO. The menus and swipes work in an almost flawless manner. The sound is great and the controls and head unit itself are very attractive. It compliments my dash so well. It's not perfect, sometimes my bluetooth is spotty and the iPod interface is a tad glitchy but I haven't come across a single head unit that has minor issues. My factory navigation head unit on my 2013 4runner has a far glitchier iPod interface.

Pros: Looks, GUI, sound, screen size

    Cons: No remote...... That's it!

Very nice product but a little quirky sometimes

Good unit overall, however, would think a high-dollar unit would have more flash to it, like when the radio or CD is playing, having some pattern or whatever going... kinda plain when stuff is playing. Bluetooth sometimes "forgets" that my phone can play Pandora and I have to select it again in the set up. That might be fixed in future software updates. Looks great in the dash with huge screen and small buttons at the bottom. I would also have liked this unit to have more advanced integration with smartphones, like MirrorLink or the like.

Pros: Looks great. Sounds great. Many features and can connect so many different devices.

Cons: Lacks wow-factor that you might expect from high-dollar unit. Bluetooth sometimes quirky

Overall a solid unit. Wish the volume controls were larger, but you lose that functionality with a touch screen. Touch sensors are very responsive and layout is easy to change. Kenwood implies that it works with the Iphone 5. it does but it doesn't live up to this claim very well. It has to be connected by the USB port to work as I'd like. Could have better designed screen, the radio preset display buttons are awful. I would have looked at other head units if I'd known that it didn't do more with the phone. Otherwise it's a solid unit that I'll be happy with for the next few years.

    Pros: Good sound quality !

Cons: Lack of full integration with the Iphone 5

I purchased this unit on tuesday and arrived on thursday. I installed it the same day in about 2.5 hours including the rear camera and the Sirius antenna/tuner. This is only the second time I installed a radio in my car in over 30 years. It is extremely easy and the Crutchfield support department only a phone call away. I called them on some clarification on the wires connections and they took me through the connection of every single wire. How is that for customer service? The unit looks great and it sounds really good with the ford factory speakers, I can't wait to get some great aftermarket speakers. Everything went smooth. Thank you Crutchfield for making this a great experience. However Sirius is another thing. They are terrible. It took me almost 2 hours and 8 calls to get service. First they could not find the unit number, then the unit did not qualify for the trial period, then it was not the right number but had to call the "Tuners" department, then it was the online service. I was ready to take the tuner out and send it back. Finaly I got a manager on line and called the right department directly and instructed them to connect service to the unit.

I will be back to buy more from Crutchfield. Sirius not so sure.

Pros: Easy installation with the reccomended accessories. Gret quality and service. Money well spent.

    Cons: Sirius connection is painfull.

I'm very torn about this product. My radio reception isn't very good with this head unit. There is always static on stations that were normally clear. The video looks great when playing a dvd or using the back up camera. The bluetooth audio and Pandora streaming are great (when my phone (Galaxy S3) is in wifi or 4G range). When its using 3G its a nightmare although that isn't really a knock on the head unit. This unit came with a free back up camera which made it worthwhile. Without the free camera, I probably would've gone with something different.

Pros: Great video quality. Large screen. Very responsive and easy to customize and flip between various audio/video sources. Overall, a good head unit.

Cons: Radio reception has definitely suffered in a major way. Little in the way of Android support. Audio quality is a little less than my factory Boston acoustic set up.

I Installed this in my Corolla and with the steering wheel adapter and it works flawlessly , good reception but dont care about a.m. or f.m. radio , I bought the Sirius tuner to go with it , the hardest part of the whole install was dealing with Sirius to get that going . I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4 and it pairs right up no issues and the Pandora app is awesome , it has made the car stereo sound much better really happy with this purchase and it even came with a free back up camera , i hooked up my 4th gen Ipod touch and no work tried another cable still didnt work called Crutchfield and was told you need the Kenwood kc ip 202 cable , not true i used the 4th gen cable and an extra 1/8 male to male stereo cable and guess what the audio works not sure if the video works once again i dont care ,, all in all so far happy with my purchase and like the free stuff that comes with it ,, thanks again Crutchfield .

Pros: nice looking head unit screen is large good for us old people,, and the bluetooth is awesome

Cons: being told you need to buy another cable to play the ipod ,, just not true ,,, read my review

I bought this unit because it specifically would use the Garmin Streetsmart system on my iPhone. The Garmin software and maps cost about $35 on iTunes. In order to display this software while plugged into this head unit there is an additional charge of about $50. I don't know how Garmin and Kenwood split the extra money, but I think a 140% adder is ridiculous. I've tried other apps including TomTom on the phone and the Kenwood doesn't display anything even with the parking interlock satisfied. So, if you want to use your iPhone/iPod apps buy something else.

The audio seems to be pretty good. I like being able to change the frequency definitions and the crossover network for the various speakers. I don't have the rear camera connected yet, but expect to have no trouble as the screen looks fine.

I wish there were more dimming controls for the screen. It's very bright while driving at night. It's easy to get the screen on and off so that's not too bad.

Pros: Good audio, good video, good looking

Cons: Terrible iPhone app integration. For this price I have to pay extra to use apps?

    Overall a great purchase

I am extremely happy with this head unit. I tested it out before replacing my factory speakers and this unit alone made a huge difference. With my Infinity speakers, the combination blows me away. The touch screen is WAY more responsive than I was hoping for, and the display is customizable so you can always see your primarily used inputs. Also, the Bluetooth is working flawlessly so far. Looks like it came factory from Ford in my '04 F150. Build quality is outstanding. So far I couldn't be happier.

Pros: Bluetooth, Touchscreen Responsiveness, Screen Size, iPhone (4) integration, Sound Quality, EQ Settings

    Cons: None yet

This went into a '13 Subaru Outback. The stock radio is terrible. The Kenwood has mush greater power and sound. Nicely adjustable EQ. You can change the bass, mid and treble frequencies plus the width. It also has a LPF which is nice. Even the FM signal is much stronger than the stock radio. Pairing via Bluetooth to my Blackberry Q10 was easy. The touchscreen works very well. The buttons are a little small but, what would I expect with a full screen display.

Pros: sounds great, good EQ settings, nice screen, lot of inputs.

Cons: small buttons (very minor niggle)

Great unit for the price, I will tell you that it made stock speakers in my car come to life. Good features, but very slow to get them started. Bluetooth takes a while to lock in, and Pandora app via Bluetooth is VERY slow opening up, once open, a good interface. Reception is not the greatest either. Talked to crutchfield about it, and they send me a new ant amp, but still no help, unit keeps cutting out from stereo, non stereo. I like things to work how they are supposed to work, I HATE having to deal or accept things for the sake of others. I think Bluetooth needs to be corrected, as well as reception issues. I had the unit 2 weeks now, and honestly thinking about sending back and going with the stock unit, at least Bluetooth works as it should, and locks in almost instantly.

    Pros: good styling, easy setup

Cons: Bluetooth issues, making all the other apps on this unit horrible.

I researched a lot of receivers before I bought this unit. I wanted a flat touch screen with backup camera capable, bluetooth, handsfree calling, had to work with my iPhone 5. Crutchfield offered this receiver with a backup camera just what I needed, great price too. Well it does all I wanted quite seamlessly the iPhone 5 worked perfect I actually made my first call to Crutchfield support because I couldn't get any volume through the USB connector with the iPhone, had the change to input 2 and then it worked great. Was a bit tight fitting in the Jeep dash you have to cut the top of the factory mounting bracket, the MasterSheet says to remove the bracket however after trying to do that I figured it's not coming out so I remembered the Tech telling me I would have to cut the top off the bracket so I did that with a dremal tool. Than I had to cut two plastic tabs with a hack saw. After that the fit was perfect used the trim plate that Crutchfield provided, looks like a factory install. I used the recommended PAC C2R-CHY4 harness to link to the factory harness.

The backup camera works perfect great clear video, the PAC C2R-CHY4 links that up with the reverse wire input and the DVD worked great with the parking break input as well. Because of the location of the license plate on the jeep being off to the side I fabricated a bracket to mount the camera about three inches above the hitch which gives me a center view with camera parking lines. Couldn't be happier!

Pros: Great Looks, ease of use, bluetooth, hands free calling, great sound, real nice screen.

As a replacement for my 2003 GMC 2500HD, I'd say it brings the truck into a new realm. Having retained the Bose speakers the sound quality has improved but the variation in volume between various inputs requires volume adjustment on a regular basis. The greater advantage to this unit is bringing in my iPhone and using Pandora, and Garmin apps. And with the backup camera, it becomes more versatile. I had a separate backup camera in the past which I would recommend to anyone that pulls a trailer , but integrating it into the stereo reduced clutter and made it more convenient. The Garmin map app isn't as clear on this stereo screen as on the iPhone but it does its job, and I haven't had any issues come up yet, so I can recommend the app for those that travel to different locations and need mapping assistance. Again the Kenwood DDX790 makes it more convenient to have that information on the dash. You do have the ability to use Sirius XM but I haven't used that product on this stereo. As for listening/watching DVD's, I have no comment at this time, but the screen moves out of the way until you load one then it closes back up. There is a learning curve to remember all of the features as can be expected, so ease of use will advance with more hands on experience.

Pros: Fits the dash without too much effort. Incorporates Onstar and steering wheel controls with extra components wired in. Crutchfields help line was advantageous when the manuals weren't straight forward.

Cons: A bracket from the old stereo had to be cut out from the back of the dash with a Dremel.

I like the functionality of this receiver, and the adapter kit and supplied materials made installing this in my F250 a breeze. I added a backup camera as well, and I'm addicted to that already. My one gripe is that the various source screens have a dated look to them, and it never reverts back to the home screen. The "tuner" screen is near impossible to tell at a glance what's going on, what station you're on, etc. It's just the interface, it has a 2004-ish feel to it, and it's 2013. Yes, I'm picky, and yes, I would still buy it again, but I don't have to like everything about it, right?

Pros: Easy installation, nice integration with backup camera, tons of inputs, tilt screen works great for bright sun-easy to read in daylight.

Cons: Interface looks like my brother's kids designed it; doesn't revert to home screen, cluttered big blocky letters on the individual source screens.

I have only had the Unit for about 3 hours so far. I use to have a Pioneer Avic system that stopped reading my CD's so I decided to replace it with this unit. I purchased this unit based on the great praise it received in the reviews. The Pioneer unit I had was about 7 years old and for some reason I am not impressed with this Kenwood unit. Before you buy it, try to find a unit on display and play with it first.

Pros: It has a nice home display and the phone screen is easy to use. This unit also will work with a remote and I am told that it works well with Iphone and Android phones.

Cons: The tuner.. If you are trying to find a radio station you will find that the station number is very small and located at the far right side of the screen. If you are driving and trying to find a station by its number you had better take care to not drive off the road trying to read the small station number on the screen. I'm having a little trouble getting it to properly work with my Iphone 4s when plugged in. It worked fine the first time but now it won't.

Love this radio!!!! It was quick and easy to install, fits perfectly in my 2007 cobalt, and looks phenomenal!!!! My girls love the color scan for the buttons and i love using Pandora!!!! Even my hubby was impressed, i was able to do the harnesses and mount it alone, in under an hour. If you're in search of an awesome unit, this is by far the way to go, and the price is perfect!!!!

I've installed many stereo's in the past, but this Kenwood was sweet! All the connections were clearly marked and this unit was very simple to set-up. The screen is unreal and I like the ability to change the viewing angle. Overall this one is hard to beat!

Excelon Series: The DDX790 DVD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage preouts (4V), and a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the DDX790 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The DDX790 features front, rear and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The DDX790 features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from 'Through' (off), 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, or 220 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 50, 60, 80, Hz, 100 Hz, 120 Hz, or 'Through' (off).
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-50 to +10) from the DVD receiver.

Speaker Type Setting: This feature tailors the DDX790 according to the type of front speakers in your vehicle. You may select Standard (for speakers with a general diameter), Narrow (for speakers with a small diameter), Middle (for speakers with a medium diameter), or Wide (for speakers with a large diameter).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Flat, and User.

EQ Pro: The DDX790 features independent Bass, Treble, and Midrange control when the Preset EQ is in User mode. EQ Pro allows you to adjust the following settings for the Bass, Treble and Mid frequency levels.

    EQ Pro
Center Frequency Q-Factor Bass Extension Level
    Bass 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 120, or 150 Hz 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, or 2.00 On/Off -8 to +8
    Midrange 0.5k, 1.0k, 1.5k, or 2.0k Hz 1.00 or 2.00 N/A
    Treble 10.0k, 12.5k, 15.0k, or 17.5k Hz N/A N/A
Note: You can store bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, AV, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, and Pandora).

Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to +6.

Dynamic Range: The dynamic range can be adjusted by selecting either Normal, Wide or Dialog. Dialog makes the total sound volume become larger as compared with Wide and Normal, allowing you to listen to the movie's dialogue more clearly. This is effective only on Dolby Digital software.

Key Beep: The in-dash multimedia head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Touchscreen Display

Motorized Touchscreen Display: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790 features a motorized 6.95" wide, 16:9 touchscreen display with a TFT active matrix system and LED backlighting. The screen has a resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB with 1,152,000 total pixels. This unit has touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The monitor electronically slides down for loading or ejecting a disc. The bottom of the touchscreen monitor can be tilted upward at six different positions to provide the best visibility in your vehicle (you can save any one of these positions to the head unit's memory).

    • Aspect Ratio: You can change the aspect ratio for video playback. You can select from Full (16:9), Just (4:3 LB), or Normal (4:3), or Auto (automatically selects to match incoming video signal)
    • Picture Adjustment: You can adjust the unit's display brightness, contrast, color, tint, sharpness, and black level to suit your viewing needs during video playback.
    • Custom Background Images: You can download a still image (800 x 600) for use as the unit's background from a connected USB thumbdrive.
    • Customized Top Menu: You can select and arrange which sources and icons display on the unit's Top Menu screen for easier, quicker access.

Multi-Language Display: For your convenience, this unit is equipped with a multiple language display. You can select the language which is best suited to your first language - English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese (simplified/traditional), Thai, Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, or Greece. For connected external monitors; only English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, and Portuguese are available.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the display of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire (attached to rear-chassis) must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. You cannot view video unless your vehicle's parking brake is engaged. If you attempt to view video without the parking brake engaged, the unit's LCD touchscreen will simply display a blue screen and "Parking Off". While your vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the head unit's menu screens/settings, source information, metadata, and album artwork.

Front-Panel Controls w/ Variable Color Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. You can adjust the head unit's button illumination from the following preset colors - Blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Yellow, Green, Amber, Red, Pink, White or Scan (Scans through all preset colors). You can also select a custom "User" color that is adjusted between Red, Green, and Blue (values range: 0-31).  The Kenwood logo remains red, regardless of variable color illumination setting.

Dimmer: The dimmer function will dim this unit's display and button illumination automatically when the vehicle light switch is turned On when you connect orange/white Illumination wire of this player's harness. You can also manually dim the unit's display and button illumination.

Security Indicator: The Security Indicator feature helps to protect the Kenwood Excelon DDX790 against theft. Turning this function "On" allows the security indicator light (red) on the front-panel of the head unit to flash when your vehicle's ignition is off.

2-DIN Chassis: The DDX790 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as Double DIN or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Built-in Bluetooth

USB Bluetooth Adapter: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790 comes supplied with a USB Bluetooth Adapter (KS-UBT1) which is pre-installed into the head unit's hidden front-panel USB input, making the DDX790 Bluetooth 2.1+EDR certified. The unit's hidden front-panel USB port is located behind the detachable touchscreen monitor. The USB Bluetooth Adapter (KS-UBT1) must remain plugged into this USB port (Bluetooth only). The DDX790 supports Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless audio streaming.

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (2.1+EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. You can register up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices with the Kenwood head unit (only one paired phone can be used at a time).

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The touchscreen controls of the DDX790 can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. Note: This unit allows you to answer a call or dial out using any option without engaging the parking brake.

External Microphone: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790 includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).

Note: This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's "VOICE/TEL" button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the DDX790 and its microphone. The head unit's LCD touchscreen will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood Excelon DDX790; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

    iPod/iPhone Integration

iPod/iPhone Connectivity: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790 supports audio/video playback from select Apple iPods and iPhones.

    • Audio/Video Playback: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790's rear-panel USB (type-A) port and rear-panel 3.5mm A/V AUX input allow you to connect select Apple iPod/iPhones using the Kenwood KCA-IP202 iPod cable (113IP202, sold separately). The unit's USB port handles the control, metadata display, and charging of your iPod/iPhone. You can navigate through your music and video files using the head unit's touchscreen controls and view song and movie info on its display, while your iPod/iPhone charges. The 3.5mm AV input handles audio and video transfer from your iPod/iPhone to the Kenwood Excelon DDX790. By using the Auxiliary input, the music travels to the receiver as an analog signal, so you can even play the Digital-Rights-Protected files you've stored on your iPod/iPhone. The unit's rear-panel AV input must be set to "iPod" in order to playback audio/video from your connected iPod/iPhone. Video can only be displayed while the vehicle is in park.
    • Audio Only Playback: If you only want to playback audio from your iPod or iPhone, you can simply connect it to the DDX790's USB port using either the USB/iPod dock cable that came with your iPod/iPhone or Kenwood's iPod Direct Connect Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately). This 1-wire USB connection bypasses the iPod/iPhone's DAC and sound quality is maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal-to-Noise ratio up to 99dB. The unit's rear-panel AV input must be set to "AV-IN2" in order to use the 1-wire USB connection. You will not be able to play Digital-Rights-Protected files.
Note: If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. These Apple devices only support audio playback (no video output).

iPod Control: You can choose to control your connected iPod/iPhone from the head unit, from the iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen, or from select apps streamed to your iPhone.

    • Head Unit Control Mode: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigate your iPod's music library by Playlist, Artists, Album, Genre, Composer, Song, Podcast, or Audiobook. Your iPod's video library can be searched by Video Playlist, Movie, Music Video, TV Show, Video Podcast, Rented Movie, or iTunesU. You can then search each of these categories using the head unit's touchscreen slider function. The head unit also supports Repeat (track) & Random (album) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone.
    • iPod/App Control Mode: The iPod/App control mode allows you to control stored audio/video content from your connected iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. This is very useful for the person riding in your passenger seat. The iPod/App mode also lets you listen to your favorite music apps, such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker streamed to your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Kenwood head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You can even watch video on the Kenwood DVD receiver's touchscreen from streaming movie apps, such as Netflix & YouTube, downloaded on your iPhone 4/4S (iOS 4.0+), via the Kenwood KCA-IP202 iPod cable (sold separately). The App Mode's video functions can only be accessed when the vehicle is in park and the hand-brake is fully engaged. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode and App Mode will provide only limited (basic), if any, control over the app. Available controls may include - Play/Pause & Skip Previous/Next.
Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

iPod/iPhone Display: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790 will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood multimedia head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. The unit will also display Album Art. If you choose to operate your connected iPod/iPhone in iPod/App Control Mode, the DDX790 will not display your iPod/iPhone's music information (the head unit will instead display 'iPhone App and iPod Control Mode + Parking Off').

iPod Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Garmin App: In addition, the optional KCA-IP202 iPod cable allows you to view navigation maps and get audible/visual directions on the DDX790's touchscreen, when the Garmin StreetPilot Onboard USA app ($49.99), and the Vehicle Display Integration in-app option ($49.99) are both downloaded to your connected iPhone or iPad (iOS 5.1+). The Garmin StreetPilot Onboard USA app contains NAVTEQ map data for the United States (lower 49 states); with over a million POIs, turn-by turn directions, lane assist with junction view, traffic updates, and speed limit alerts. Because the map data is downloaded onto your iPhone and does not live on the network, wireless coverage is not required to navigate. Once you have selected your destination on your connected iPhone, your map route will be visible on the DDX790's touchscreen (even with parking brake disengaged) and turn-by-turn directions can be heard through your car stereo speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to control the Garmin StreetPilot USA app. The screen of your iPhone and the screen of the Kenwood DDX790 may not be identical.

Note: A Garmin StreetPilot Onboard app with North American maps (US, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, USVI, and more) is also available for $59.99.

RDS AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood Excelon DDX790 features a built-in AM/FM tuner. The unit's tuner features RDS (Radio Data System). RDS is a service used by some radio stations to transmit data outside of normal radio broadcast signals. When an RDS station is received, you can immediately find out what kind of data is being transmitted by looking at the program service name which appears in the display after the frequency. RDS features an emergency transmission function which interrupts regular programming to broadcast an emergency announcement (such as a tornado or severe storm). There is also a switchable Traffic Information function, which will automatically tune a traffic bulletin when it is broadcast, even when you're not listening to the radio.

    • Seek Modes: You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.
    • Presets: Not only does the multimedia receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling. You can store up to 18 FM stations and 6 AM stations as presets.
    • Mono Mode: This feature reduces the noise (static) when a stereo broadcast is received as monaural (for FM band only).

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note II and my phone works fine with the system. I can access my phone directory with no problem and I even get my text messages read as well so I can respond verbally without having to touch any buttons at all. [ JERRY M  Feb 17, 2014 ]

No mine is the same plastic. [ MARCO  Jan 01, 2014 ]
Cory, I have the DDX790 and the screen is plastic like yours. I travel about 3 miles of dusty gravel road each day. Have not had a problem with scratching the screen but I've been careful. I've had my unit a little over 6 months. [ RICHARD  Dec 29, 2013 ]
You are right, Corey. [ DANIEL  Dec 29, 2013 ]

There are safety features built into all DVD receivers that prevent them from displaying video while the vehicle is in motion. [ Jeff  Dec 05, 2013 ]  Staff
Crutchfield usually will give you one free with some stereo purchases if you enter in your vehicle information. Otherwise I had to purchase the adapter specifically for my jeep grand cherokee. If your curious as to which brand adapter they usually send, mine was a scosche. [ Christopher  Mar 02, 2014 ]
