Form, function, fun

If you're considering ditching your factory stereo for something that'll add a little life your ride, Kenwood's DPX500BT CD receiver ought to be high on your list. This great-looking double-DIN receiver features a big single-line display, Bluetooth functionality, an array of tools for sonic adjustments, and some very cool entertainment options.

Bluetooth made easy

This receiver's built-in Bluetooth eliminates all the headaches. Kenwood's Simple Secure Pairing system automatically detects and pairs phones in close proximity to the receiver — no dealing with searches, PIN codes, or other hassles. Your phonebook transfers quickly to the receiver, so it's easy to make outgoing calls — you can even use voice dialing with compatible phones. And the DPX500BT will even inform you when you receive a text message on your phone.

When paired with an iPhone 4s or iPhone 5, you can engage Siri through Kenwood's Siri Digital Assistant Control. Just press a button to talk to Siri through the included Bluetooth microphone, and you'll hear her answers through your car's speakers.

Bring your smartphone

When it comes to music on your phone, this Kenwood covers a lot of bases. Of course, you can stream music wirelessly from just about any phone. But this receiver also provides easy access to and control over these apps:

  • PANDORA: You can check out PANDORA Internet radio when your iPhone's connected to the USB port, or through the Bluetooth connection with your Android or Blackberry phone.
  • Aha Radio: You can control Aha Radio with your iPhone (wired connection) or Android phone (Bluetooth connection).
  • iHeartRadio: Listen to more than 1,500 radio stations all across the USA with your iPhone or Android phone.

Get the beat however you like it

This Kenwood's got you covered, whether you're listening to CDs, streaming audio through Bluetooth, or checking out the music on your iPod. And you can easily expand your entertainment options by adding SiriusXM's add-on tuner, and getting into the amazing variety of programs and personalities offered by satellite radio.

The sound's the thing

This receiver's built-in amp will rejuvenate your car's sound system. You'll find preset tone curves for quick adjustments, plus bass, treble, and midrange controls for hands-on customization. Special controls let you tailor the sound to match your car's cabin, speaker setup, and your favorite listening position. And you have a full complement of preamp outputs for adding amplifiers and subs.

Attention, Toyota owners

Kenwood includes a set of Toyota trim pieces that'll make this receiver look great in your dash.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood DPX500BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1 + EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood DPX500BT. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood DPX500BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can register up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices with the Kenwood head unit, but only one can be used at a time.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the DPX500BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately, or after 1-99 seconds. The DPX500BT also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the DPX500BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's front-panel controls or remote control.
      • Speed (Preset) Dialing: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's Control Knob.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the DPX500BT. Up to 600 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long and each name can be up to 50 characters long. You can search each category of the phone book in alphabetical order.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

External Microphone: The Kenwood DPX500BT includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).

Note: This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The Kenwood DPX500BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The DPX500BT will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The DPX500BT also supports audio streaming of music apps downloaded on your smartphone with metadata display and limited control. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Digital Assistant Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S/5 via Bluetooth (not USB), the Kenwood KDC-BT55U has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the DPX500BT and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood DPX500BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.
    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The Kenwood DPX500BT features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit also supports playback of MP3, WMA, and AAC music files loaded onto CD-R/RW discs.

USB Port: The DPX500BT also features a front-panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-down cover. The USB port enables connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device; such as your Android smartphone, portable digital audio player, or USB thumbdrive. The unit supports playback of MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV music files stored on a compatible USB memory device formatted with FAT 12/16/32 file system. USB portable devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: Not compatible with Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Zune, or Android
    iPod/Android/Aux Integration

iPod Direct Connection w/ DAC Bypass: The DPX500BT's front-panel USB port acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the optional Kenwood USB Direct Connection Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the USB/iPod cable that comes with your iPod/iPhone. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the DPX500BT.

    • DAC Bypass: This USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of music files and podcasts stored on your iPod or iPhone, as well as music apps streamed to your iPhone.
    • Music Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.
      • Head Unit: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigate your iPod's music by Playlist, Artists, Album, Genre, Composer, Song, or Podcast. You can search these categories alphabetically or using a percentage search (0.5%, 1%, 5%, 10%). The head unit also supports Repeat (file) & Random (folder) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone.
      • iPod/App Mode: In iPod/App mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You can also listen to your favorite music apps (such as Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Kenwood head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your apps. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode. Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.
    • Information Display: The DPX500BT will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. If you choose to operate your connected iPod/iPhone via its clickwheel or touchscreen controls, the DPX500BT will not display your iPod/iPhone's music information (the head unit will instead display "APP/iPod").
    • Battery Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood DPX500BT utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood DPX500BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the DPX500BT are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/2.5V Preamp Outputs: The DPX500BT features front, rear and subwoofer 2.5-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The DPX500BT features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood DPX500BT offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

EQ Pro: The DPX500BT is equipped with Kenwood's EQ Pro. The integrated equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Natural, Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Powerful, and User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    EQ Pro
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz -8 to +8 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz -8 to +8 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz -8 to +8 Fixed
Note: You can store EQ Pro bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Bass Boost: In addition, The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2, BB3, or Off).

Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Variable Button Illumination: The Kenwood DPX500U features variable color display and button illumination. You can choose from one of 24 preset colors, have the unit scan through all 24 preset colors continuously, or customize your own color (RGB: 0-9). Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

2-DIN Chassis: The DPX500BT has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. • Numeric Keypad: The wireless remote control features a numeric keypad (0-9) which allows direct track access of your music tracks & files (from CD or USB), as well as AM/FM presets.
    • Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Does this unit offer any sort of internal amplifier control? I currently have a low end Alpine HU and the volume stepping is loud (vol 1 a whisper and vol 2 screaming), and I want to make sure this unit is more precise

There are a number of settings to adjust the quality and loudness of the unit, as well as an equalizer function that can help soften the sound all together. I find the increase is very gradual, though. It's always easy to find the perfect volume. I think the scale goes from 0 (mute) to 30 (deafening). It's a great unit, I've been using it for almost 2 years and have had no issues.

Hello George, The CD only holds a single disk at a time. Despite having upwards of a thousand cd's though, I only rarely use the CD player on the unit, as I spend most of my time using the USB port to play songs on flash drives, each of which can hold up to 256 folders of 256 songs each. Great unit!

For anyone who has already purchased this model recently, did you find that a system and/or bluetooth update was required? Asking because I noticed in the Built-in Bluetooth feature details of this model, it mentions visiting the Kenwood's Support Site to ensure your bluetooth device is compatible, and it provides a link to the site. Kenwood's site mentions "*Be sure to update the Kenwood unit to the latest firmware. (7 March 2013)" and provides a link to go to the update guide which has the system & bluetooth updates available to download.

Bought mine in beginning of March 2013. Did not know of any update. Perhaps this explains the "so-so" performance of the bluetooth. Great receiver though.
    david  Dec 28, 2014
    A
Yes, I would do that, at this point. When I bought mine last year, there were already a couple of BT and system updates since my head unit had been manufactured. It was very easy to do, I just downloaded both files to a USB flash drive, and then followed their instructions. It takes no more than five minutes, but it will reset all of your settings.

When I call this unit, and my lady is using the Bluetooth function I get an awful feedback returning my voice, very garbled. And I have difficulty hearing her over the feedback or echo. Any suggestions?

Echo Cancel under Bluetooth Mode Settings (BT Mode) will fix this. Simply adjust from default (4) up or down until you get the sound you like.
    chipp  Dec 28, 2014
    A
Under Bluetooth detailed settings adjust the "Echo Cancel" setting to eliminate the echo or feedback. (section 17.5 of the manual). Press the phone receiver button to enter BT Mode. The default level is 4, but it can be set from 1 to 10. Easiest way to do this is to park your car and make a call, then adjust the setting while on the call until it sounds best to you.

I have that head unit in 2 cars.....and I installed them myself. ..the first thing that comes to mind is the Bluetooth signal transfer....I have used a lot of Bluetooth ear pieces and have noticed an echo with those. ...so it could be a Bluetooth thing.....also.. your mic wire could be touching a hot wire or it could be pinched somewhere in your installation.....that seems to be a good radio. ...so I can't blame your problem on the radio.....but honestly I've always had some small issue with Bluetooth in a car. ..even with other radios

Hi Jere, Try the following: 1. Push and hold audio button to enter function mode. 2. Use control knob to select Settings. 3. Use control knob to select Display & Illumination. 4. Scroll to "Disp Off Mode." 5. Select Clock On or Clock Off. While it would seem that Clock Off would turn off the clock I believe it only dims it. But I believe that's the only adjustment you can make to the clock illumination. Good luck.

I am trying to update the stereo in my wife's 2006 chevy cobalt ss. Basic system(not pioneer), no on star. I like this unit, but it says we'll lose the digital information center. Is that true? And if so, is there a way to install without losing it? Thanks, Carl

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

I need a SiriusXM Adapter for my new Kenwood DPX500BT. My already installed Sirius XM cable, that worked with the factory radio, has an antenna type male end but the Kenwood has a male pin connector on the back, lower right corner. The only Kenwood adapter I found in Crutchfield stated it would not work in my 2010 Dodge Ram 3500 or the Kenwood DPX-500BT? HELP! I listen to XMSirius all the time.....

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: You will need the SiriusXM SXV200V1 Tuner Package. This will allow you to turn the Kenwood DPX-500BT into a SiriusXM receiver. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

I've had good luck with Kenwood decks using bluetooth, shouldn't be a problem. Getting them paired can be a challenge, if they don't see each other the first time you try, turn everything off and then try again and it will probably come right up. Good luck, Ron

Bluetooth worked well, however you need to find a good place for the microphone out of the way of wind if you want the other person to be able to hear you well. Playing bluetooth audio was clear as long as the phone was in the car within three feet of the unit. If its in your pocket and you get out to pump gas, itll cut out. Not that much of an issue.

You are right, it is non-detachable and you cannot slide any part of the interface. If you are looking for a receiver that has a detachable interface you can speak to a crutchfield advisor they are always happy to help or you can use the filter option at the side, just select the feature (face detachable) under general feature.

Thanks Sergio...Hoping that you are correct. I am installing this in my Desert Fox Toy Hauler RV. You pay big money for these things and they come with crappy sound. They installed the KDC unit in the rv but I am pushing 60 and I cant see the dang thing. I need a flash light and my glasses to do anything on it. Im hoping this new one will be of larger size and easier for me to use the controls. Plus I bought new speakers too. Cant wait for quality sound.
    gage  May 19, 2014

My experience with Kenwood is that most of the receivers use the same harness. That would make your install an easy plug and play. However, if it uses a different harness, Crutchfield will probably include the proper harness. I did no soldering for my unit. The screw down clips work perfectly and make for easy swapping of head units.

    andrew  Apr 02, 2014

It is not really recommended that you power subwoofers off the power that a head unit puts instead. The head unit would connect to an amplifier to power the subwoofer. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

With the remote control, press the green phone button. Scroll to settings , select it, the scroll to advanced settings. Scroll through until you find the display. It will give you the 3 choices of keys, display or both. There are a few things that you can only set by going through this path with the remote, like auto answer or setting the number of rings before answer. I have tried to find a manual about this head unit but have been unable to. Most things have to be figured out by just pressing buttons. Note: there are 3 or 4 different adjustment menu's entered different ways. Through the remote only by the green button. By pressing the menu button. By pressing and holding the center knob. Can't remember the other one right now.

Pressing and holding the "Audio" button for a few seconds will bring up the settings menu. Use the center knob to turn scroll through options, and press the knob to select, and use the return key to the left of the knob to go back. I don't remember specifically what the menu options are called, (Display and Illumination, I think), but you should easily find the option to disable "demo mode" and select the display color of your choosing. Hope this helped!

Will this head unit stream music from my new LG G2 and play music from GTUNES and PANDORA from it through blue tooth ?? If not which double din head units will be compatible with the LG G2 and steering wheel controls ?

As long as your device has BT it will stream as usual. It plays Pandora, Aha and Iheart radio. I lost the use of my steering wheel controls but it wasn't a big deal to me though. I still catch my self from time to time adjusting the volume from my steering wheel. lol

In my Ford F150 Super Crew it is in place with 4 screws then theres a dash piece over that. So not easily removed. But if they really want it they will rip the dash up order to get the stereo.

This receiver basically uses the same mounts or type of mounts in your vehicle now. There's no reason to believe that the Kenwood receiver will be at a greater risk of theft than what you have now. That said, if a thief wants to steal it it's gone.

The only thing you have to consider is the display will be difficult to see with all the sunlight; some colors are easier to see. It is certainly a unit worth having period, I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Okay I bought this and installed it in June, works great except...when it is around 15 and below it won't have any power to it then when my car warms up and I turn it off and back on it turns on. Its not an ignition problem because everything works except the radio. I drive a 01 grand am se stored outside in an Iowa winter. Everything was hooked up exactly right. Any help?

I'm not a GM ASE Cert Service Tech..... our son is, however. Need to confirm if it's the supply or ground issue coming from the car, or the elctrical interface control unit between the car and the radio head (assume you purchased from Crutchfeild... I did). Only way we know to better define is to do a volt meter check on the suply side, including same 12V ground source the original GM radio provided. If OK 12V(+) and 12V (-) from GM wiring when cold temp, then proceed to do same test on output side of Crutchfield furnished adpater module. If same 12V (+ and -) supply is good = issue is internal to the radio unit.
    christopher n  Feb 06, 2014

The coldest that my radio has been subjected to was 22 degrees and it worked fine. Since you have ignition (ACC), the next thing that I would check is the "yellow" wire that runs to the battery directly and is "hot" all the time. If you can get to the radio harness when it is cold and not working, I would do a voltage check at the radio plug and see if it is at least 11.5 volts. Since you are not losing your memories or radio settings, your voltage may be too low to fire the radio up but high enough to maintain the memory settings. Since your car battery starts the vehicle, your battery should be good; it would be the connections from the Kenwood to the battery that may be suspect. If you have decent voltage there, then in my opinion, you have a component failing in the radio and needs replaced. Hope you hear back from others that live in colder areas than I do. Sorry I can't be of more help.
    dennis  Feb 06, 2014
    A
Hmm. Mine will basically not show any display when that cold but still functions fine. If I change inputs or channels or something like that the LCD will respond, but very very sluggishly. Usually only takes a few minutes for it to act normally.

I would check your power connections, if you just crimped them the cold can have something to do with the connection. Pull them and soilder them and use heat shrink. I have found the same type of issues on my customers cars in my auto repair shop on other systems and lighting that was not properly installed.

Just this past Sunday I installed the Infinity Basslink 200 watt a powered Subwoofer system to it and it's that much better! So you should no problems hooking yours up to it. I will say this, the powered Infinity system I bought is waaaaaay better than imagined. I drive a 2004 Ford Expedition and the sub is in the very back of my truck and it will shake your voice!

It will play the music from just about any source as far as I can tell. It basically re-routes the audio from your phone to the stereo when connected by bluetooth (at least it does on my Windows Phone). Can't really answer your question about controls in general. It does provide controls for Pandora and the Ipod. I suspect you would have at least limited functionality (play, stop) for any source.

I have a iPhone 5, I haven't used the voice dial as of yet. I can only assume if your phone has Bluetooth capabilities that the mic will work for voice calls. The incomming call does come through the speakers and you can set the in coming call to either go through the front speakers only or all of them. The only problem with sending through the front speakers only is when you play music through your Bluetooth it will only come out of the front speakers. The mic I have set at the upper driver side of my wind shield. It works Great!! I have had my son talking on it from the back seat and the caller were able to hear him just fine. I love this radio I would recomend it to anyone who is looking to upgrade from their stock radio.

To Mohamed, you can adjust / cancel the auto answer. I hated it and figured it out. You have to use the remote control. It is the only way. When not talking on the phone press the green phone button and it goes it settings. Scroll down to advance settings and enter it. It is adjustable in that menu, where you can also adjust the mic gain and echo cancel. You can set auto answer to off or to answer after 99 rings.

You can register up to 5 devices on this radio. If you do a Google search for "dpx500bt manual" you will find a link to an html version of the manual from Kenwood. Make sure you bookmark that link because the unit itself does not come with a manual.

I have recently bought Kenwood DPX500BT, it is an awesome radio. I haven't had any problems with it at all. Your question about 4 iPhones. Yes, it should be able to connect to more than one phone. You could also connect them at the same time and separate various calls would appear on the car receiver. For example, phone 1 is receiving a call now. 2 mins after the call is over, for example, phone 2 receives a call. The receiver would pause the music or radio and play a ring sound. The phone would connect as long as it is in range and the bluetooth is working on the phone. In other words, it should not be a problem. One thing I found annoying, but got use to it is that after several ring tones on the receiver it would pick up the call automatically. I am not sure if there is a way to cancel that option in the settings.

Yes. I have two iPhone's and two Android devices that connect at random times throughout the day depending on use. I bought it specifically for the Bluetooth feature that allows me to make and receive calls without dialing. It was very easy to set up. I believe I did call customer service and a tech walked me through the setup...I love this radio and my phone! I am in compliance with the law that states you can't use your hands to talk on the phone. I am not a technical person so I bought the install card and had the radio put in by a local car audio center. It took less than an hour to put it in and I have been very happy with this purchase.

I noticed the exact same problem in my 03 Yukon. I think it is in the unit itself, now hearing your problem. I, after hearing the problem, instinctively but not necessarily intelligently, hit the dash above the unit and the rear speakers began working. I thought maybe one of my connections was not soldered well or plugged in fully, though it could be in one of the wiring harness kits that came with the unit. I have been meaning to take this up with Crutchfield and Kenwood but I wanted to take the unit out and inspect those things I mentioned, narrowing the problem, completely, down to the unit itself with certainty. I just haven't had the time. I really like Kenwood equipment and have several in different cars and on the boat. I think they deliver the best fidelity in play back. Maybe I'll get it apart before the holiday but for now, I'll just "wack" the dash. Give it a try and let me know if you get results. The probability that we both made the same bad connection is remote, at best. Good Luck

    Q
I bought this unit and finally got around to installing it, but have two technical problems - hoping another owner can help: 1. The descriptions say it offers European tuning, but I cannot get anything but the odd numbered frequencies. Living in Europe, this is a problem - anyone know how to make this feature work? (Yes - I read the manual, etc..) 2. No matter how many ways I've tried, I cannot get the stereo to interface with my 2005 Toyota Camry steering wheel controls. I bought the right and official Crutchfield kit, but no luck. The diagram of the harness in the instructions shows a slightly different wiring harness than is actually there. Appreciate any help anyone might have - thank you!

Tom, I purchased this unit just over a year ago for my 2007 Toyota 4 Runner. I live in the states and can not help with your first question. However I also used my steering wheel controls and had to purchase the ASWC-1 kit (if I remember right). Hope this helps.

I am not familiar with European radio frequencies. I trust that you are within the range of the operating radio boundary, otherwise it won't dial in.

I've bought 2 of these DPX500's refurbished from Crutchfield. They both looked brand new and I haven't had any problems.

so far no problems. love the unit. the blue tooth works perfectly. I was a little leery about buying a refurbished unit but I am quite happy with the purchase. the install was very easy with the step by step instructions and install kit.

No worries so far from my unit...granted I use it primarily for XM (baseball), CDs and radio so can not tell you if other music features are any good. I also have one phone (Samsung) via blue tooth and that works well. Additionally Crutchfield has a good return policy, I would ask a rep if they would accept a return on a refurbished just in case, if you have concerns or doubts. If you do get it ask them to send you an owner's manual as mine did not come with so had a heck of a time until I asked for, and was sent one via e-mail. Hope this helps. The instructions Crutchfield sends are easy to use.. if you install yourself....I recommend you solder your leads.

I purchased item in late Feb '14, since then, no problems with it. The hardest task is learning all the features. The controls are easy to learn. Set up for normal everyday features was not so bad. Pricing was very compatible and after researching different units, this was a good choice. As far as warranty, Crutchfield will honor and back up what they sell. To put your mind at ease, I'm 62 years young and doing it. I also installed it myself with their installation recommendations. Enjoy.

Had this unit installed in my wife's truck since January of this year and so far no problems. Unit looks brand new and all accessories came as if it was new. Free adapter kit from Crutchfield saved me some $$ too.

I bought a refurb of this unit in January ... no issues at all other than the Toyota interface had screws for th plastic molding that were not long enough and required some "dremel-izing" of hte plastic to work. The unit itself has been flawless (BT interface, mic, everything working fine).

Got it back in January. Have not had any issues with the unit at all. They even sent a new hands free mic that was left out of the box no charge. The only minor issue is it is a XM unit so you have to upgrade to get all of the Sirius channels.

So far, so good. I have purchased 3 refurbished stereos from Crutchfield: A Pioneer in 2008, a JVC in 2010 and this latest Kenwood this Christmas as a gift. All are working exactly as designed with zero problems to date. Just a note about the Kenwood should you get it... it seems someone at Kenwood has decided that Bluetooth streaming should by default only work through the front channels only. You'll need to go into the setting under "Detailed Set" to change the bluetooth streaming from it default "Front Only" setting to "All" setting. No other issues to note.

The one I have was packed well from Kenwood and came with a new wire harness and new remote and the radio looks like new. I am very happy.

James, I bought a refurb of this unit and had to send it back because the microphone interface for the bluetooth failed. The problem was in the unit and not the microphone. I traded for the same unit new and it works great. Not sure if this is a common problem but I thought I would mention it.
