Overview

Our take on the Kenwood KDC-155U

Plenty of media options

The KDC-155U CD receiver may be one of Kenwood's least expensive models, but you'll be impressed by the performance and features it offers. If you tune into an iPod® or iPhone® for your music, this Kenwood makes it easy and safe to use your player in your car. Just plug into the convenient front-panel USB input, and you'll enjoy outstanding control over your playlists right from the receiver. Tools like Alphabet Search, Reverse Browsing, and Skip Search allow you to find the song you want fast, without having to squint at the tiny display on your player.

If you're a Pandora® Internet radio fan, you can even pick from your favorite stations when your iPhone's connected. Android users, you can download Kenwood's free Music Control app and access music from your phone through this receiver. You and your friends can plug almost any portable device into the receiver's handy front-panel minijack input and listen to your favorite tunes while you drive. If you're spinning CDs, you'll enjoy superior sound quality from your discs, and the KDC-155U plays discs loaded with MP3 and WMA files, so you can enjoy long road trips without having to swap out discs.

Kenwood KDC-155U CD receiver

Kenwood's KDC-155U CD receiver features handy front-panel USB and auxiliary inputs.

A big step up from a factory radio

The typical factory radio doesn't have the power needed to deliver clean sound when you get up to highway speeds, but this Kenwood's built-in amplifier offers impressive power for a big bump in performance. The KDC-155U also gives you a 3-band EQ and a 3-level bass boost, along with a Supreme Setting feature to improve the sound of your compressed music. If you add a powered sub to your system, you can turn it up and down with the receiver's sub level control, a great feature if you listen to a wide variety of music. Last of all, Kenwood includes a wireless remote for your convenience.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Great sound & easy to install. I had a question & called, the tech was very knowledgeable and very helpful

Bought this for a Christmas present for my teenage son -- Easy installation and the phone support guys were awesome. We had several questions and they answered QUICKLY, no waiting forever on hold, no endless phone punching to get to a person. Concise, accurate answers. Great sounding system. Looks good in the dash, fits well

Pros: Priced right. Sounds great. Looks good, easy to install

Cons: Alot of options to go through to actually use the system. However, I'm kind of old school. This is not really a problem for younger folks.

Can't be beat for the price. Plays CD's and still has USB input on the front face, and also contains iPod, iPhone, and Pandora controls.

Pros: high power good sound plenty of sound adjustability (EQ options) Works with lots of devices

Cons: USB cover is a little flimsy and not sure how long it'll last or hold up Sound settings aren't the most convenient to adjust Only one pre-amp output

I wanted a head unit that wouldn't look too out of place in a beat-up old Volvo, and this fit the bill. It's a good set-and-forget choice. I can't comment on the CD player portion, since I haven't used it and probably never will. The USB socket is my choice; I've got a low-profile stick plugged in all the time, and it just works. It hooks up fine with my factory speakers.

Pros: Looks less desireable than it is

Cons: Does not play AAC files (eg purchases from iTunes) No automatic dimming

This unit did the job for me at a very affordable price. Makes my factory speakers sound better, gives me a lot of options, and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. The instructions were missing one important point but the advisor I contacted was very helpful and I finished the job in short order. I'm still not sure how much value a remote has when you're a foot away from the unit, but it doesn't hurt to have it I guess.

Pros: Cost, sound quality, input options, detachable face.

    Cons: Small buttons, big fingers

This is a great car stereo, especially for those cars and trucks are from the old generations. I replaced the factory car stereo in my 1992 Ford Ranger with this one. The process was easy enough, although those who don't know how to solder wires may need help from others. Everything together, it took me about 2.5 hrs from the beginning to the end. The instruction manual was very straight forward and all necessary tools, except soldering necessities, were in the package (they were recommended at the time of order). Now I can play Pandora and iTunes through my phone in my old truck! Seems to pick up more radio stations than the factory radio. Pretty happy about the improvements. Now the stereo is the most valuable part of the whole truck!

Pros: Easy installation. Inexpensive. Pandora capability. iPhone recognition.

Cons: Nothing really... Then again, I was starting from a pretty low standard...

The unit is "OK" for the cost. By OK I don't mean that I am dissatisfied. It sounds better than the original factory unit it replaced. It's also about the cheapest unit Crutchfield offers and I didn't replace the original factory installed speakers. So given the price and the existing speakers, it's an OK, i.e., not the best, which would have exceeded my budget and the low quality of my speakers. Other factors which make it OK are the design. Since there's only one knob (volume), any other sound changes require multiple steps and repeated attempts until the procedure becomes ingrained. I prefer knobs instead of numerous digital finger presses to control sound, radio station selection, and device. The preselect radio buttons are hard to find while driving. A knob plus a digital press combination would have been a better solution. The unit fit my car nicely and the wiring instructions were straight forward- simply match color coded wires with butt or wire nut connectors that you supply. The installation diagram that accompanied the unit was fair, but I searched the internet and found a better series of instruction steps using photographs of an actual removal and installation of the factory unit for my 1993 car. Otherwise, the Crutchfield telephone sales personnel were excellent in helping me select the right stereo for my needs, budget, and car.

Was looking for an inexpensive but good quality unit for my VW Rabbit pickup and ordered this one. Simple to install and easy to use, this radio exceeded my expectations on several levels. I'm not as big of an audiophile as I used to be, but it gets the job done well and the built in iPod & Pandora controls work great. I installed it a few weeks ago and am very happy with my purchase!

Pros: Pandora and iPhone compatibility Easy to use controls GREAT Value

The sound is great for a unit costing less than $100. I love the Pandora feature but have found navigating my iPod music is buggy. Radio preset buttons are tiny and hard for my 50-year-old eyes to find. The sound is better than the Alpine unit I replaced. I do wish I had gone with Bluetooth, but otherwise I love it.

Generally very happy. See pros and cons below.

Pros: Great sound and a lot of nice features. This is the first car radio I have bought in about 15 years and I see they have come a long way. Display is cool and gives a lot of information about the CD or music on an IPhone.

Cons: One thing that has not come a long way with aftermarket radios is the small buttons that just defy easy use while driving. Why can't aftermarket models have the same ergonomics as factory radios?

At first I thought I might be able to use a couple 2-channel amps, but the amps don't really have the right digital signal processing, and the Tech at Crutchfield suggested using a receiver, which does have the right signal processing. I mounted the receiver where the the ash-try used to be, and mounted the iPad where the factory radio was. The CRUX SOCGM-17 Factory Integration Adapter made the wiring easy. I plugged the iPad into the receiver USB (allows the iPad to charge, and provides excellent sound quality). I still need to use the receiver to control volume (can't control that on the iPad) but that's fine, and within easy reach. I was most-surprised by how good it sounds considering I still have the factory speakers. This is the base Impala too, so the speakers are nothing special.

Pros: Value, customer service, sound quality.

Cons: Not very easy to change settings of bass/treble, clock, etc., even after you figure out the steps.

    Excellent Value

Radio looks nice and sounds excellent. Really cranks loud and sound quality is clear. Good mix of base & treble with plenty of power. Red Lighting looks nice. CD Player, USB, Ipod options are nice. Lots of settings to play with.

Pros: Crank loud, plenty of power with excellent sound.

Cons: still trying to figure out all the controls the radio has.

    Great for the price.

Great stereo, good features, the only issue was not being able to tune in manually a certain radio station. The station tune button seems to just go into seek scan feature, just have to read the instructions to see how exactly to manually tune in and lock in the station, other than that perfect replacement fit perfect, looks great sounds great, great tech help on chat with abe.

Pros: Price, value, features, sound quality, customer service.

Cons: Not intuative, could not manually program certain radion station.

I was looking for a low cost radio with that I would easily connect with my iPod Classic, so I could replace the factory radio in my 2005 Subaru Forester. This was a great purchase. I'm extremely satisfied with the sound quality even with my factory speakers. This radio cranks so much louder then the factory model. It also has quite of bit of equalization settings for the user to tweak, or you can just rock one of the pre-sets. It's an awesome upgrade! Crutchfield's installation directions were top notch. Easy to read, great photos and specifically detailed to my car model. Highly recommended!

Pros: low cost, great sound, perfect factory replacement, Connects to iPod easily, equalization customization, easy install, nice fit, excellent install directions

Cons: FM signals are not as strong as I would like, but I could have a loose antenna wire going in to the back of the radio.

Had it for a few weeks now. Great radio. Glad I chose that one! Wasn't too expensive, and it definitely doesn't dissapoint. If I had to argue something, I would say that I'd like to see it have Bluetooth where u could make calls thru it, but I'm sure they have one of those- just outta my budget. Haha

Pros: Great sound. Easy to use. Looks cool and slim. Good reception too!

Cons: Took me a while to figure out how to get the am- but who really uses that anymore?

My factory radio with CD player went deep over the spring and it became more and more apparent that it wasn't going to ever come back. That left me with the choice of going to the local BB (Big Box) store or order a product online. I got a quote for install and parts from the BB store then compared the price to Crutchfield. I purchased a better product from Crutchfield for less than half the money with me doing my own installation. The Kenwood KDC-155U CD receiver is an ideal factory replacement sound system. No it doesn't pound out the bass or create a symphonic hall in your Jeep (or in my case a GMC Jimmy) but its gives you a quality sound package with enough audio control to give you some sound manageability in your car. The CD player is very easy to operate with the included remote and there are up to 18 preset FM and six preset AM stations to select. On the removable faceplate is a USB connector to attach your iPod, iPhone, or another auxiliary device. Installation with the Crutchfield install kit is easy enough. The directions are thorough and the correct parts are included with the install kit. You don't have to run to the store to get extra parts. When I did have a question not addressed in the instructions a quick call to customer service took care of my issue. All in all I would highly recommend this CD receiver to anyone looking for a quick and quality replacement of a factory radio.

Pros: Great sound quality and a solid build. Installation was doable with simple hand tools and the install kit was complete with appropriate parts and instructions. I'm really happy with this Kenwood product.

    Cons: None worth mentioning.

I've always been a fan of Kenwood head units and this is my third. While I've had less impressive experiences with their amps, this Kenwood unit is solid. I've had the unit installed for almost a month in my daily driver and it hasn't had any glitches or problems so far.

    Pros: Economic value. Features.

Cons: For anyone installing this product in a Jeep Wrangler TJ, there's a little issue with the physical install of the unit. There's a mounting bracket that connects to the stock unit on the back. I couldn't find a hole that matched on the head unit, and the bracket kept the unit from pushing all the way into the dash. After pushing on the bracket and bending it back, I was able to get the unit pushed all the way in.

This is a great head unit!I wanted just a basic unit as all I listen to are CD"S and a flash player.I researched several different units and this meet all my needs.Installation was easy enough, and after playing around with it for awhile you get the hang of it.I also bought two pair of kickers speakers 68 and 69 which made this a good sound system. The first time I turned it up I put on Dark Side Of The Moon and cranked it up,and rocked out for awhile,it was so loud that the back window was moving in and out.The sound quality from both the unit and speakers are great. There isn't any distortion or vibration. If you want a good head unit without all the bells and whistles try this unit out you won't be dissapointed.

Pros: Easy to install and operate.Good sound.Nice on the wallet.

Great product for the price. Installed it in my 2002 BMW 330ci. The receiver went in heat protect mode (safe mode) when I turned the heater on. When the receiver in safe mode, it would not work at all. Call Crutchfield Tech, and was adviced to remove the unit. I noticed it was very hot when I removed it due to the heater duct is right next to the unit. The techs didn't know how to fix the issue because they never had this issue in the past. I took it upon myself and placed foam insulation between the heater duct and the unit, and that had fixed the issue.

Pros: USB, Ipod or Iphone control compatible, very loud. Great product.

Cons: Heat protection temp set too low.

After doing my own research to replace a stock radio in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler, I called Crutchfield...and with the help of the experinced sales dept. I was directed to purchase this Kenwood Radio. I highly recommend this radio as well as highly recommend Crutchfield to invest in your next purchase. While shopping around to replace that crappy stock radio (shame on you Chrysler) the places I went to shop did'nt have a clue what I needed to purchse to install myself.

Pros: For the price, you can't beat it. The unit has everything that I required. Detachable faceplate (as in the summer I take the top and doors off) so I have piece of mind of theft. The unit enhances bass, mid and treble. Very Easy to adjust to the functions of the unit.

Cons: I have nothing bad to say about this purchase.

This radio is great. At first i was scared because when i installed this radio it would not turn. After rewiring it i decided to call crutchfield. I was told to check my fuse and it turn out that was the problem. After getting the radio to finally turn on i fell in love. It is very easy to tune your audio settings and offers many many settings. Also It looks really cool at night with the red being illuminated. Id recommend this radio to anyone on a budget. Also yes the built in amp makes a HUUUGEE difference in sound. Also you can adjust it incase you dont want your music to loud.

Great receiver, particularly for the price! With Crutchfield's install kit, had the old one out and the new one in in less than an hour. Good FM and AM reception, easy to operate advanced controls once you get the hang of it. Works extremely well with my iPod Nano Gen 6 and with my iPhone 5, as well as USB thumb drives and the normal Aux input. By default, it's set to auto-scan radio presets, so if you live in a remote area like I do, you will need to switch it over to manual seeking which works better for me than auto-scan anyway. Glad it has a sub output, which I may put to use at some point. Display is very clear, clock easy to set, manual is readable by humans for once, all in all a great little replacement receiver at a great price.

Pros: Inexpensive Full-featured (particularly remarkable for the price) Super easy to install with Crutchfield's cheap install kit Great master sheet (as always) from Crutchfield Adequate output power for my needs. Works with iPhone 5

Cons: Red lights, not that there's anything "wrong" with them, just don't like red. You can order one model up from this and get "programmable" lighting color, but didn't need that.

USB Port: The Kenwood KDC-155U features a front panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-up cover. The USB port enables connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device; such as your Android smartphone, portable digital audio player, or USB thumbdrive. The unit supports playback of MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) music files stored on a compatible USB memory device formatted with FAT16 or FAT32 file system. Your USB device should only have a maximum of 8 folder layers, 255 folders, and 255 files per folder - with a maximum of 65,025 files and folders. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

Music Control for Android Smartphone: The Kenwood Music Control app for Android organizes your Android smartphone's music, while providing quick and easy search capability from the Kenwood CD receiver. The free Kenwood Music Control App for Android can be downloaded onto your Android smartphone from the Google Play App Store. Your Android smartphone must be running Android OS 2.2 or later. Once the app is downloaded and has a chance to organize all the stored music on your Android smartphone, you can connect your Android smartphone to the Kenwood CD receiver via USB (your compatible Android smartphone must be recognized as a USB mass storage class device; not compatible with MTP protocol). The Kenwood Music Control app offers the following Android supported functions.

    • Song Management: Music stored in your Android smartphone can be navigated from the Kenwood CD receiver. Songs can be easily selected by searching for a Song title, Artist name, Album label, or Genre.
    • Song Information Display: Song information such as Artist name, Song title, and Album label are displayed on the connected Kenwood CD receiver.
    • Mood Playlist: Playlists can be created by classifying songs into categories by type of mood. Songs are analyzed and classified into the following categories of moods - High Energy (Active/Powerful/Core), Acoustic (Detailed/Simple/Smooth/Easy), Standard (Dynamic/Rockin/Vivid), Stylistic (Cool/Urban/Trance)
    • Intro Skip: This function allows you to choose and listen to only the hook-lines of songs stored in your Android smartphone.
Note: When the Kenwood Music Control app is first downloaded it will require some time to populate all the music, so we suggest doing this overnight.

Music Files Format Supported by Music Control app for Android:

Codec Extension Bit Rate Sampling Frequency
AAC .aac, m4a up to 160 kbps 8-48 kHz
    MP3 .mp3 8-320 kbps n/a
    PCM/WAV .wav 8-/16-bit n/a

Music Editor Compatible: The Kenwood KDC-155U supports the PC application, Kenwood Music Editor Lite (ver.1.1.0). Kenwood Music Editor Lite is a Windows-based desktop software that helps organize, manage and transfer MP3/WMA music files to your USB (MSC) device from your PC. When you playback audio files that have been stored on your USB (MSC) device using Kenwood Music Editor Lite through this unit, you can search a file by title, album, or artist name using the head unit's Music Search function. The Kenwood Music Editor Light (ver.1.1.0) Windows-based software can be downloaded for free from Kenwood.com to your PC. The Kenwood Music Editor Light is compatible with the following Windows Microsoft Operating Systems.

    • Windows XP Professional, Home Edition SP2 or later (32-bit)
    • Windows Vista (32/64-bit)
    • Windows 7 (32/64-bit)
Note: Not compatible with Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Zune, or Android

Aux In: The unit is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input that can be used to input audio from a portable audio source, such as a portable MP3 player. The Aux input must be turned on to function. The KDC-155U allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video, or TV. The unit has 3 auxiliary input modes.

    • On1: Outputs the sound of the external unit connected to the Aux terminal when switched to the Aux source.
    • On2: Activates the attenuator function when turning on the power with the auxiliary source selected. This prevents the noise when no external unit is connected to the Aux terminal. Turn off the attenuator function when listening to output from an external unit.
    • Off: Disables the selection of the Aux source.

    iPod/iPhone Control

iPod Direct Connection w/ DAC Bypass: The KDC-155U's front-panel USB port acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the optional Kenwood USB Direct Connection Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the USB/iPod cable that comes with your iPod/iPhone. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the KDC-155U.

    • DAC Bypass: This USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of music files and podcasts stored on your iPod or iPhone, as well as music apps streamed to your iPhone.
    • Music Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.
      • Head Unit: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigate your iPod's music by Playlist, Artists, Album, Genre, Composer, Song, or Podcast. You can search these categories alphabetically or using a percentage search (0.5%, 1%, 5%, 10%). The head unit also supports Repeat (file) & Random (folder) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone.
      • iPod/App Mode: In iPod/App mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You can also listen to your favorite music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, Last.fm, Rhapsody, & Slacker) from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Kenwood head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your apps. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode. Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.
    • Information Display: The KDC-155U will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. If you choose to operate your connected iPod/iPhone via its clickwheel or touchscreen controls, the KDC-155U will not display your iPod/iPhone's music information (the head unit will instead display "APP/iPod").

    • CD1: Automatically distinguishes between audio file disc and music CD when playing a CD or CD-R/RW disc.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-155U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-155U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-155U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Selectable 2.5V Preamp Output: The KDC-155U features a 2.5-volt stereo preamp output that you can be adjusted from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass subwoofer preamp output.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-155U offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Note: You can store bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Bass Boost: In addition, The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2, BB3, or Off).

Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood KDC-155U features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of four tuning methods: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), Manual Tune, or Direct Access (via remote).
