Kenwood KDC-352U

Overview

Our take on the Kenwood KDC-352U

Variable illumination and a lot more
The right illumination color can really make a new receiver look at home in your dashboard. Kenwood's KDC-352U CD receiver is the first model in their 2012 lineup with variable-color illumination. You can choose a color that matches your vehicle's illumination, or pick something totally wild — it's a cool feature to have, but that's not all this receiver offers.

Loads of media options
If you tune into your iPod® or iPhone® for your music, you won't miss a beat with this Kenwood in your car. Just plug your player into the convenient front-panel USB input, and you'll enjoy outstanding control right from the receiver. If you're a Pandora® Internet radio fan, you can even pick from your favorite stations when your iPhone's connected.

Kenwood sound quality
Your iPod was designed to work with earbuds, not car speakers. When you're connected via USB, the KDC-352U bypasses your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, sending the digital data to the Kenwood's superior 24-bit converter. Your music will sound more natural and lifelike.

Kenwood KDC-352U

Your iPod isn't the end of your listening options, though. You can liven up your drive by loading in a disc full of music files, or by jacking another device into the front-panel aux input.

You'll hear the difference
This Kenwood dishes out a lot more power than most factory stereos, so you'll enjoy sharper imaging, better stereo separation, and cleaner reproduction. And your tone controls will take a step up too — just compare the treble and bass knobs on most car stereos with the KDC-352U's 3-band EQ, high- and low-pass filters, and selectable bass boost, along with settings that let you customize the output to fit your car's speaker setup.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

I had trouble with displaying the clock at first, it took me a while to see the button for the display. That is why I am techno challenged. Otherwise, it was a breeze to set up. Haven't used it a lot yet, but so far, so good. No problems, and it sounds much better than the stock radio. Now for some better speakers........

Great upgrade. My wife needed something that worked with her phone, and this fit the bill perfectly. As a longtime Kenwood user, there were not any surprises. The use of the unit hasn't changed much over the past 20 years. There are just more bells and whistles.

Pros: Easy to use. My wife figured it out in minutes. iPhone interface is good, and the sound is nice.

Cons: Colors are ok, but could be better.

Great unit to replace the factory radio in my 2001 Blazer. Factory unit would struggle to play CD's with even minor scratches, this Kenwood plays them all no problem. The radio reception is stronger too. I do wish the display would show the time AND radio station or CD track number. Maybe it can and I haven't figured it out yet? An odd complaint I have, the volume knob has smooth edges on it, so I can't adjust volume with one finger by spinning the dial. I have to grab it with 2 fingers and turn it, if it was textured like a quarter, it wouldn't be an issue.

Pros: Easy set up, nice display that isn't too flashy, able to color match the lights. Not sure what the "coolness factor" means. I didn't buy this to brag to the neighborhood kids about it.

    Cons:

Great for price point but if I'd spent $50 more...no $100, no $300

The install went great in my MKIV Jetta, no problems there. The issues I feel relevant to discuss revolve around a few issues: Why was this changer was recommended; I don't own Iphone therefore Pandora option is worthless. The only other issues are a clarity issue and ability to tune in the sound. Yes A great price for what you receive, yet not the quality I wanted. I should have saved more money. In all, a good upgrade from stock, yet to meet my need for clarity I'm dumping more cash for 4 Polk DB6501 component speakers and an Alpine amp.

Pros: - Increased quality of sound greatly. - Can stream Pandora through my Galaxy III and charge phone if needed. - without an amp still puts out a nice sound yet becomes distorted quickly when volume is increased.

Cons: - Unit is geared to IPhone users (Pandora option is worthless and so are the downloadable S3 programs) - Why did Crutchfield recommend this when Im not an Iphone user? - Although quality of sound has increased from my non-monsoon OEM unit, I still don't have the clarity I wanted. - Not able to tune in a great sound.

If you are looking to upgrade your factory radio then this one would be a good place to start. Its definitely an upgrade in looks and sound. It has 3 outputs for perfect separation of channels should you upgrade with aftermarket amps. The user interface is how it should be when upgrading from OEM radios especially when you don't like a whole bunch of features. I am satisfied with this Kenwood and I thought i might be disappointed because of the price. Its worth the money in low end stereos. Kenwood did good with this one.

Pros: Easy to use, looks good, and its a Kenwood

Cons: The buttons for Pandora thumbs up should have been backlit.

Excellent value for the price. I have an older model of this radio in my other car which is the reason I purchased this. Very easy to set up and very easy to use. iPod controls work flawlessly and the aux jack is conveniently located in the front of the unit. Color changing is another nice feature so you can color match according to your interior lights.

I replaced my factory 1999 Jeep Wrangler with this unit. All the necessary parts from Crutchfield were included. The challenge with install is the diagram provided with the Kenwood instructions--specifically the harness connector and what to connect to. The interface to access your options is easy, just push the main knob; I am only having tuning the radio via Direct mode--i can't find it. In addition to Pandora, I also can listen to Songza, Music Unlimited, and any other music app when in Ipod mode. The only thing negative about the 352U is the cheap plastic material these are made of. My Kenwood headunit KRC555 (circa 1988) was made of hard steel and industructable. I hooked up my new 352U with Kicker DS46 on the front panels, and Sound Ordnance P-52 for the roll bar; both 500% better than factory. I shopped around for best value between Crutchfield and another online retailer for the headunit and speakers. Although the other retailer initially appears to be a better cost, they nickle and dime you with all the essential parts that Crutchfield gives you free, and tech support, and all shipped in one box. Go with Crutchfield!

Pros: Great value Great Crutchfield Install instructions

Cons: Can't find Direct mode for AM/FM tuning

Installed this into a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder. Got the special OEM Amplifier Integration (had Bose system and I did not replace the speakers) piece as well as the dash kit. The directions for wiring were a bit sketchy, but with a couple calls to customer support, I was up and going. The first support call left out a very important detail, but the second filled in the missing link. A couple notes: 1. I got the stereo, antenna adapter, the dash kit and the OEM Amplifier Integration piece for less than $150. out the door 2. Although the first tech guy missed a vital piece of info, the tech support did get my project wrapped up 3. Missing link was this: Make sure you put the Back/White wire in with the two black wires (3 wires total) as well as put the Blue/White wires and the Blue wire from the wiring harness, that plugs into the factory plugs, together (3 wires total) and DO NOT use the blue wire from the Kenwood's wiring. My power antenna would not work without connecting the Blue/White + Blue wire like this. 4. I had to fiddle with the dash kit a bit and do some shaving on the black piece of plastic that snaps on the front of the opening under the stereo. I would say it looks about 95% professionally installed (a small gap here and there) which is an improvement over the Bose stereo's missing buttons and pen that was shoved into the tape deck to stop it from making noises when the vehicle was turned on.

Pros: Plenty of customization Looks great Super price

Cons: Took one week for it to arrive It did not say in any of the directions to put some of those wires together.

At first this unit looked promising, but that didn't last long. I quickly discovered that in addition to not dimming like the factory radio's display did, this HU's display is all but impossible to read in anything approaching direct sun. The button lighting colors are adjustable, but the display itself is always the same washed out white no matter what. In addition, my vehicle doesn't have any other clock, so I rely on the radio for this pretty basic functionality. Unfortunately it doesn't display time when it's turned off (like every other radio does), and to make maters worse, every time it starts a new track, it switches from the clock to a bunch of worthless "song info" like "folder 123". It does switch back on it's own, but it is amazingly frequent that when I look down to check the time I have to wait for the display to switch back to it. All of that would have been bad enough, but the unit has always been a bit quriky. At first I thought it was just me needing to get used to the interface, but it's gotten worse over the 5 months that I've owned it. Among other things, I can't even change tracks. Track forward or track back on CD will result in all audio ceasing, "reading" being displayed, and after about 10 seconds the source being changed to USB on it's own. If I'm already on USB, I get a dim flash of jibberish on the display, a short pause in audio, and then whatever was playing resumes. I'm VERY disappointed. I'll DEFINITELY be trying a different brand.

Pros: Some flexibility in lighting colors (but only buttons, not the display) Audio quality is decent Menus are reasonably laid out

Cons: Extremely poor overall reliability Display doesn't dim with dash lights like factory radio Display is completely illegible in sunlight Annoying switching from clock to "track data" every time it starts a new track No clock when it's turned off (combined with the above complaint means that there is no "reliable" clock option) Clock seems to drift ahead over time at the rate of about 1 minute every 3-4 weeks Won't change tracks correctly (or at all now) Never did cycle through menus quite r

Unit has a host of features and excellent sound quality; menu's are a little difficult to learn at first, but are easy to navigate once you get used to their patterns. There are several preset EQ patterns and several user options that allow you to customize this for your vehicle and speaker set-up. Highly recommend this unit for the price, quality, and value.

Kenwood and Crutchfield . . . two names that mean quality, performance and satisfaction. I purchased this radio to replace one in my daughter's 1991 F150 Supercab. It was the last piece of the customization process on her 'baby'. It turned out to be the icing on the cake! She and her friends are highly impressed, so how could I not be? The fact that Crutchfield included (at no additional cost), detailed instructions, the wiring harness adapter, and the mounting adapter, My next sound purchase? I don't know yet, but Crutchfield will be the source, believe me!

Pros: Sound, quality of the build, iPod integration, appearance, and the ability to use thumb drives mean fewer CD's to be damaged by careless storage.

Cons: Sorry, there just don't seem to be any cons to mention.

My only gripe about this unit is user friendliness. The controls are a bit confusing, and some make no sense, especially the button for the on/off. Had I known how confusing it is, I would have bought something different. Don't get me wrong, other than that, it's a good unit and a good value, and the sound is excellent. But I'm sure there's other units/brands out there that cost about the same, sound as good, that have easier controls, and an easier-to-navigate menu.

    Pros: Sound, value, appearance.

Cons: Confusing controls, more trouble to switch between functions (CD, radio, etc.) than it should be, way to easy to accidentally get in to the "settings" mode, harder to navigate the menu than it should be. And really, should it be so hard to turn it on or off? I push the volume control knob in to turn it off (like is common among car stereos), and it switches to the "settings" mode.

This radio completely transformed my 2003 eclipse gts. I was worried about the stock infinity amp being in the equation and was looking to bypass it. I hooked up this Kenwood and WOW seriously the system is crisp and clear with nice clean bass. I Highly recommend this radio to anyone looking to upgrade from their stock radio. I will also be upgrading my door speakers , I have already done the rears. Very Impressed with the Kenwood.

So many good features and a great display! It's functions are very deep and well thought out.... The search feature is a little cumbersome if u are driving down the road but the remote is more useful than u might think. All the RCA outs are fantastic giving u so many different options for amps ect. I am still exploring all that it can do.......so worth the price! Put this in a 2004 Nissan Altima and love it.

Pros: All u can want in a unit in this category....it's miles ahead of the rest......

Cons: Search is a bit deep with a lot of button pushing....pull off the road or just let it play

I am most impressed with this radio and with how easy it was to install (in a 2002 Honda Accord), thanks to Crutchfield's support. The instructions were explicit, which is important - if there is something to screw up doing something like that, I will do it. But it went smoothly, and I am very pleased with the final product. Functionally, it is excellent. Sound quality is as good as could be expected given the factory speakers in the Accord (and it does sound better than the original unit). The logic in using the unit is a little strange until you get used to it, and then it's pretty straightforward. All in all, I'm very glad I bought this Kenwood stereo.

For the sub $125 range, this is a killer deal! Add in the value of the install kit and wire harness, it's the obvious choice here. With all the support, free shipping, and over all great service, you would expect to pay a premium for such good service, but yet, Crutchfield can even beat stores like Wal-Mart on the price! I don't know how you guys do it, but bar none.... the top of the food chain here! But back to the radio, this is really a sweet radio and although I just have an older iPod right now, I will be upgrading to the iPhone in a month. The way this radio works with the i-phone/pod is short of amazing! With all the controls running right off the radio, this is just perfect for me! I will say though, the makers of these radios need to get on the ball and start adding a rear USB plug standard. Although I am using the pocket above the radio to house my iPod via a short cable, I would be longing for a rear plug to hide the USB cord for a slick install. I also installed 4 Kenwood speakers with this new radio and am already longing for maybe an amp and small sub.... Crutchfield... you have created a monster! I am almost 40, not a teen.... yet I am stoked about my new stereo! Thank you all! P.S. Do yourself a HUGE favor... buy the clear twist barrel connectors that Crutchfield sells. I always solder and heatshrink wires, but these new connectors are amazing and are the perfect choice to install your new radio. I HIGHLY recommend these.

Pros: iPod, iPhone and Pandora right from the radio? AWESOME! Add in the ability to play large gig memory sticks of MP3's or disks? You will never look at a "CD Holder" again!

Cons: Very little.... I really thing all the makers need to step up and add rear USB ports, I mean... computers stick them all over the place, monitors... keyboards even! Why are these radios stuck with just one?

The receiver is just what was expected and sounds just fine with the stock Tacoma speakers. The best thing about the purchase was the ease of installation. I have horror stories I can tell about attempted installs and dashboard take downs all the way back to the days of eight track tape players. I was amazed how easy Crutchfield made the whole operation. Nice job guys. Just a couple of things. If the truck has standard shift the console complicates the install just a bit. Also, the pocket under the radio could be angled down in back a bit more, things tend to slide out. Both of these are easy to deal with, I hesitate to mention them but clearly Crutchfield strives to exceed expectations.

Pros: Good sound Very easy install

Cons: Need smaller fingers to operate controls

This is by far the best money i have spent yet. I give it up to Crutchfield for doing an excellent job with everything. The first aftermarket headunit i bought was installed incorrectly by a professional that they said they knew how to do. It ended up blowing the 12v wire cause the amp ground was not connected the the chassis ground. I installed this myself, it was a peace of cake. Thanks to Crutchfield with there master guide. In very many ways this is a great unit. However, it is not always the easiest to use when attaching an external player. A single control knob with clicks needs to be done right, and Kenwood didn't do it right. They got close, but not close enough for me.

Took about 45 minutes to do. I was surprised how much better my factory speakers sounded. I love to be able to plug my iPod and iPhone in and listen to music while my device is being charged.

I HATE aftermarket stereos as a rule, but this one had me thoroughly impressed. After installing it and finding out about its seemingly endless range of functions/features, I couldn't believe it didn't retail for three times what I paid. I have a '99 Cherokee Classic (without the upgraded factory audio), so right now the headunit is powering the factory speakers, and to my surprise, sounds good--better than the factory deck did, and I have no amplifier (this unit actually allows you to select your speaker setup under settings, and I selected "OEM"). I just haven't had the time to replace the speakers, so I will go ahead and do that because the factory speakers just don't seem to have the clarity I want, but so far I'm really impressed. The speaker set-up I am going with is 5.25" Pioneers in the front doors and 5.25" Alpines in the rear roof. It sounds good now, and I anticipate that it will sound incredible once I put those new speakers in.

Pros: I matched the color of my factory lighting/displays with one of the headunit's 25 color choices; fairly easy operability; TONS of acoustic adjustments, including Hz levels; substantial feeling of quality on faceplate controls; easy/thorough manipulation of iPod through deck.

Cons: One or two of the buttons could have been a little bigger for adult male fingers; so many settings and menus and submenus that playing with the settings is, at times, confusing. But the Android phone-styled "back" button sort of makes up for that...

The Kenwood KDC-352U is exactly what it purports itself to be, a simple, easy to use media head unit. It creates wonderful sound, the bass boost actually adds a degree of depth to the music your listening to, rather than simply "muddy" the experience. It's controls are fairly intuitive and easy to use. I've been using Kenwood products off and on for 30+ years and have never been disappointed...if crisp, clean sound, easy navigation and value are at the top of your selection criteria....you owe it to yourself to give this deck serious consideration!

Cons: Can't brew a cup of coffee.....seriously, no cons thus far.

I'm a big fan of kenwood decks, been running them for over a decade. With each new deck I'm always a bit fearful that they'll somehow try to make it a little too fancy, a little too quirky, or just outright mess it up somehow like I've seen with sony's, pioneers, etc. But they always surprise me with their quality, their easy to use menus, and great sound. I'm a big fan of this deck, and love being able to change the colors on it to roughly match the surrounding dash.

Pros: Change the colors, still very high quality and easy to use

Cons: Color change takes a second or two, so have to be just slightly patient.

This unit replaced the stock unit in my Montero Sport, powering 4 Kenwood Components. I am totally blown away by the sound quality of this unit and I believe it was well worth the expense. The Ipod connectivity is great because the head unit overrides the Ipod controls, so I tucked my Ipod out of sight. With 3 sets of preamp outs I can add front, rear, and sub amps if I wanted. The controls on this unit are great, though you will have to spend a little time and tinker with the controls ahead of time because there is some navigation involved. Overall I am extremely satisfied with this product. Crutchfield provided everything I needed to make this installation as easy as possible. If you're in the market for a new head unit, don't pass this one up!

Pros: Great Value, Fully customizable, color changing, lots of preamp outputs

This unit gave me more power to push the speakers. It fitted perfectly into my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the hardware sent by Crutchfield. The sound was very impressive. Being primarily a jazz lisener, it was perfect for bringing out the crisp highs along with vibrant mids and a bold but not overwhelming presence on the lows. The unit was suggested by a Crutchfield rep after much discussion with me about what I was looking to acheive and it was the perfect choice at a good value.

Pros: High quality sound with more power. Colorful display facing and easy to understand operational functions.

    Cons: None

The radio was a little harder to install. Has several new features I have never used and kind of small buttons.

Pros: Looks good. Great sound. A clear upgrade from factory radio-CD player.

Cons: Sodering and taping wires and removing back bracket.

this headunit is awesome. I've always been a huge Kenwood fan because there products are great and so are there prices. sounds great. and the color changing is cool. I have it set to scroll colors so it's constantly changing.

Pros: color change to match the dash

Cons: really can't think of one.

Sure, I like features just like other people, but good sound is the most important thing for me. This unit has a very rich sound, perhaps somewhat due to the fact I have front and rear Bose speakers......still, my original unit never sounded near this good. Slip in the CD Dire Straits: On the Night (live), dial in Brothers in Arms, and you'll understand what I'm saying.

Pros: Very rich sound, nice features layout, "cool" lighting, can plug in a flash drive or iPod

Cons: bottom row of buttons a little small

I love this unit. I was looking for something inexpensive that met my needs - plenty of outputs, if I wanted to add more; a direct port access to iPod, with radio controls to control the iPod; regular radio stations; and a CD player. I got all of that, plus some. The changing colors on the face plate are pretty amazing, I love that little feature, and I really love the iPod controls. I'm still figuring out all of the buttons and finding new stuff daily.

Pros: Easy to use, Great iPod controls

Cons: Doesn't quickly turn off if you need a fast silence, like if your phone is ringing; however, there is a volume reducing button on the remote control that has a similar function.

I've always been a Pioneer fan, but this Kenwood had the features I was looking for at a great price. I am really impressed with the ease of operation, and how the whole unit seems to be well constructed. Recommended for other Pioneer fans when they want to try something new.

Pros: Ease of use and great features at a good price point

Cons: I wish the display color would change with the button colors, but it's not a deal breaker for this price.

Crutchfield does it again! Just purchased the KDC-352U with the Crutchfield Advisor Chuck's help. INstalled in a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Chuck was very thorough and and answered all my questions. Placed the order on Saturday, received it on Wednesday. Friday night I decided to begin installation. Was able to remove factory radio pretty quickly, then Saturday am completed the install. The Master Sheet was a HUGE help (I haven't installed a car radio in over 2 decades). INstructions were accurate and easy to follow (of, a Jeep Wrangler is a pretty simple vehicle, but still...). Powered up, sounds great!! Will definitely have to replace the factory speakers (dash, roll bar, and sub), but this thing rocks! Very easy and intuitive to operate and control. All I really wanted was to be able to connect my iPod, and that's a breeze - I love that I can control it from the head unit, even a full random. So with less than one day use, very pleased, will update my review as it warrants. Big thanks to Crutchfield!

Pros: Easy to install, easy to use, sounds great so far!

    Cons: None so far.
