Kenwood's KDC-448U is sure to get high marks from you for versatility and usability. You can plug your iPod® or iPhone® into the front-panel USB input and take charge from the receiver, scrolling through your albums, artists, playlists and more. A dedicated iPod key and extra search tools like Direct Search and Alphabet Search make the iPod controls on this model a cut above many car receivers.
The 3-line display shows off song, album, and artist info all at the same time, or you can set the display to a large font, 2-line mode for the big view. You can also adjust the illumination to match your vehicle's dash lighting, and the USB input and auxiliary input are illuminated so you can find them in the dark. Now that's attention to detail.
Front aux and USB inputs
The USB input is also handy for thumb drives loaded with music files, and you can plug almost any audio device into the front panel auxiliary input. The KDC-448U plays all your discs, whether store-bought, home-burned, or loaded with MP3, WMA, or AAC files.
Get back, Jack
Got some favorite songs, or radio stations? The Log Key stores the last 15 stations, phone numbers, songs, or functions you've visited. Perfect for when you need to get right back to where you started from or play that favorite song again and again.
Great sound to go
Above all, the KDC-448U makes your music sound good. The digital-to-analog converter turns the info on your CDs and music files into warm and realistic sound, and the built-in amp sends a powerful signal to your speakers. You'll also find the audio tools you need to get the best possible performance in your car, including a 3-band parametric equalizer for setting the bass, mids, and highs.
Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

Why replace your factory radio?
Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.
Kenwood KDC-448U Reviews
Average Customer Review:
Great Product for a Good Price
Ease of Use
I was looking a a starter head unit and shopped and compared everywhere. The Kenwood KDC-448u is the most bang for your buck. This was my very first Installation and was very easy but the instruction manual was very us-less. Have a friend help you out who has experience with car stereo systems. The player it's self is very sleek and sexy with custom color change and EQ that will hit hard. Love this player and recommend it to any level of music enthusiast.
Pros: Vaule, Ipod jack, Color Change
Cons: Instruction Manual is us-less

Ease of Use
Nice stereo. Color changing face is awesome. Instruction booklet not worth the paper it's printed on. Excellent sound quality. Can't change stations by pushing up/down/left or right arrows, have to fumble for number on remote then press enter (very inconvenient).
Pros: Color changing face. Sound quality.
Cons: Instruction booklet worthless. Can't change stations easily.

Ease of Use
Nice unit and easy to install. I like that I could fine tune the color to better match the OEM dash lighting and the install kit fit perfectly. Easy enough to use but there are a couple touchy spots... a) be careful using the on-off button as the faceplate disconnect button is right above it and both are very small. It's easy to inadvertently pop the faceplate off b) I miss preset buttons. You don't realize how slow choosing another preset is until you don't have them. Plus it diverts your attention away from the road much longer. I'll make do with the distracting 3 to 4 second process, but next time I'm going for preset buttons and to get a clean and fast half second hit.
Pros: a) Looks and sounds great for this non-audiophile. b) Fine tune the color to match the OEM dash lighting. c) Great install kit. d) Fabulous Crutchfield support
Cons: a)It's easy to inadvertently pop the faceplate off becuase the on-off and faceplate buttons are small and right near each other b) No preset buttons diverts your attention from the road for too long

Great deck and easy to install thanks to Crutchfield's helpful install package. The display colors surprised me since I could basically pick any color in the rainbow...definitely a plus! The only downside is with ease of changing stations. I have not found an easy way to switch between the stations that I like best whether it is on FM or Sirius.
Good Unit - nice display

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I ordered this unit because I wanted a Ipod playback deck with a three line display. Installation was easy thanks to Crutchfield's all inclusive parts and complete instructions. I haven't fully investigated the unit because it's in a pickup truck, not my daily driver, but the nice customizable colors and informative display seems to be just what I wanted. Like all units I've had with the one big knob, getting used to what direction to press when is a little tricky. I'm sure it will be more natural with more use.
Well worth the investment
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I had foolishly waited to upgrade my Saab 9-2x factory system for years, and then one day realized I just couldn't take the horrible sound anymore. I ended up with this Kenwood - liked the multi-format compatibility, the ability to change display color, the power - and am very happy. Crutchfield was, as usual, super helpful in the purchase and after-sale support. Everything shipped as promised. The stereo itself works great, has ample power, pulls in the same (or slightly better) stations as my factory unit, looks very good in the dash, and does a pretty good job controlling my iPhone 3GS. Overall, I'm very satisfied.
Only a couple negatives:
1) Biggest gripe is that stereo automatically switches to playing iTunes when I connect iPhone. I would prefer to do this manually because sometimes I want to stay on Tuner or Disc and just charge the phone.
2) Glossy display is hard to read in bright sun conditions. I will try applying some Apple iPhone matte protective film to see if it helps.
3) Stereo seems to automatically put iPhone on repeat, no matter what iTunes is set to before hooking up.
4) Related to #3, stereo doesn't always play songs in the order I had set up in iTunes before I connected. Sometimes need to go back to "iPod by hand" mode, make an adjustment, and then go back to controls through stereo.
Otherwise, for the price, why wait - make the investment and you will be happy you did.

Great headunit, many color changes that match perfect with my stock gauge cluster. Love how you can change so many setting with a subwoffer hooked up, such as sub level, bass level, you can turn the sub completely off. Ipod settings are awesome, very easy to use, like how it displays the song, artist and album on the screen, you can pause it from the headunit. only problem i have had with it is while changing songs on the unit it freezes and i have to shut the deck off to get it to start playing again. other that that the unit is awesome

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Variable color display matched my truck well. I like the display which has a
number of display options, and is easy to read. Would prefer to have
forward/back function as keys, not having to click the knob up/down, left/right
when you are bouncing down the highway. My main complaint though centers
around the mp3 playback. This is my first unit that can play mp3's off a USB so
maybe this complaint applies to all brands. It sorts the songs strictly by
filename alphabetically/numerically. So if you if start playing an album it doesn't
play the songs in order, but alphabetically by song title. Or if you have two
albums by the same artist it will play songs off both albums, each song
alphabetically. I tried a number of naming conventions and finally thought I had
it figured out by just naming the file by its number in the entire USB. Basically
they are named 1.mp3 to 894.mp3. I figured this would force it to play an album
in sequence before going to the next artist or album. But even here it was
goofy, for example if you you play, track 10 of an album (10.mp3
also being the filename), it won't play track 11 next. It will play tracks 101 to 109
next, then track 11. I really don't know why it is using such a convention,
especially since it can read the metadata, and shouldn't have to sort by
Great cd receiver
2002 GMC Sierra 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I was looking for a quality receiver with three rca outputs, usb and auxiliary
ports, and a detachable face for a good price to put in my daily driver a 2002
GMC Sierra extended cab. So I chose the 448U. And I'm very pleased with it.
This thing is awesome. I love all the options this thing has. And the display is
cool too. And I saved about $80 buying it from Crutchfield because of the free
installation kit and wiring harness. A+ product and service. And I will be putting
another one of these in my show car.

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KDC-448U features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The head unit includes a cloth pouch for storing the face-plate when detached. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.
Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.
Variable Color Illumination: The Kenwood KDC-448U features variable color display and button illumination. You can choose from one of 24 preset colors, have the unit scan through all 24 preset colors continuously, or customize your own color (1-24: 0-9). The display, button illumination, and USB/Auxiliary input can be set to the same color or set independently.
Note: You can switch the in-dash head unit's display between a positive or negative effect. You can also adjust the display's contrast from 1-30.
Display Types: The KDC-448U offers five different display types:
- Type A: Displays 3 lines of text.
- Type B: Display 2 lines of text.
- Type C: Displays only the 12-hour clock and date.
- Type D: Displays the spectrum analyzer.
- Type E: Display is turned off.
Note: The Kenwood KDC-448U offers English, French, and Spanish menu text.
Illumination Effects: The Kenwood KDC-448U offers two unique key-button illumination effects.
- Illumination Operation Sync: This function sets whether the head unit's key illumination color is changed in conjunction with the key-button operation.
- Illumination Music Sync: This function set whether the head unit's key illumination color is changed in conjunction with the system's sound & volume level.
Dimmer: The dimmer function will dim this unit's display automatically when the vehicle light switch is turned On when you connect orange/white Illumination wire of this player. You can also choose to dim the display manually.
Clock/Date Display: The in-dash CD receiver features a 12-hour clock and date (M/D/Y) display. You can even set times for two different cities (dual clock display).
Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.
Log Function: This unit automatically memorizes previously used functions and function settings, which can then be easily recalled from a list. A maximum of 15 recently used functions are logged automatically. When this limit is reached, the memorized functions are deleted from the oldest to newest. You can select which functions are logged from the following list - Tuner, CD, iPod, USB, Phone, Settings.
Note: You can lock the memory log function to prevent memorized functions from being deleted from the list.
Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned "on" or "off" within the menu.
24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-448U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.
MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-448U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-448U are as follows:
- Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
- Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels
Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 7-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.
Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).
Supreme Setting: When MP3, WMA, and AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).
System Q Sound Control: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.
Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The System Q's User Mode features independent Bass (100 Hz), Treble (10 kHz), and Midrange (1 kHz) control from - 8 to +8 dB.
Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver also features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV11, LV2 or Off.
Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, Aux, and USB).
6ch/2.5V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-448U features front, rear and subwoofer 2.5-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.
Note: You can turn the KDC-448U's built-in amplifier off to improve the quality of the sound from the head unit's preamp outputs.
Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-448U features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, or 180, 220Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.
Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-448U provides the following subwoofer preamp output controls.
- Low-Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the unit's subwoofer preamp output. You can select from 50, 60, 80, 100, 120Hz, or "Through". The "Through" setting allows your external amplifier's crossover network to do all the filtering for your subwoofer.
- Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
- Subwoofer Level: You can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level from the CD receiver. You select levels between -15 to +15.
Audio Preset: You can register a single Audio Preset into the head unit's memory to be recalled at any time for all sources. The Audio Preset memory can save Bass, Treble, Midrange, Subwoofer, and High-Pass/Low-Pass Crossover settings.
Note: When you recall the saved Audio Preset, all the sources will be the setting value which is registered.
Dual Zone: The Dual Zone mode allows you to output the Main source and the Auxiliary input separately for the front and rear channels. You can select whether the auxiliary input will play in the front or the rear. You can adjust the volume of the rear channels independently from the front channels (0-35).
Tel Mute: The KDC-448U features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.
Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.
AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood KDC-448U features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.
RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.
Tuner Presets: The KDC-448U's tuner provides two ways to store your favorite radio stations.
- Normal Presets: You can store up to 18 FM presets (01-18) and 6 AM presets (01-06).
- Mixed Presets: In this mode, different bands and turner sources can be saved in the same preset layer, which allows you to recall the desired stations without switching the bands or tuner sources. You can store a mixture of 6 AM/FM, HD Radio, and Satellite Radio presets of any combination.
Note: This unit does not offer direct preset buttons. Instead, you will need to access the unit's presets using the Control Knob.
Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put AM/FM stations with good reception into memory automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.
