Plenty of other entertainment options, too
When you're not enjoying your drive-time radio, slip in a CD to take advantage of this receiver's 24-bit digital-to-analog converter. It converts the raw data on your disc, including MP3 and WMA files, to smooth life-like sound. And convenient front-panel auxiliary and USB inputs give you access to plenty of other listening options.

Once you plug in your iPod® or iPhone®, you'll enjoy quick navigation of your playlists and albums. Plus, if you groove to Pandora® Internet radio with your iPhone, you won't miss a beat when you plug it into KDC-X596 with its built-in Pandora® controls. And you Android fans can take advantage of the Music Link app, which provides a variety of search and playback features when your phone is plugged into the front-panel USB input.

Sound-shaping tools
Wimpy bass and treble controls can't compare with the KDC-X596's 3-band EQ, high- and low-pass filters, and selectable bass boost, along with settings that let you customize the output to fit your car's speaker setup. And, speaking of customizing, you can adjust the illumination color on this Kenwood to match your vehicle's lighting.

And don't forget another Excelon sound advantage. If you're building a car audio system, one of the keys to the getting the most out of your system is a clean, powerful signal from your preamp outputs. All Kenwood Excelon receivers feature 4-volt preamp outputs that'll provide your amps with the strong signal they need for top performance.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod or iPhone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

This stereo was fairly easy to install in my '95 Accord, the instructions included were slightly vague but I figured it out. The only problem was that I wired the harness up color for color and found that I had almost zero radio reception. Well I called Crutchfield and spoke to an employee who said that I needed to wire the blue wire from the harness to the blue/white wire on the stereo. That fixed the issue and I haven't had any problems since! It made my Alpine speakers sound amazing compared to the stock unit. I definitely recommend this one.

Pros: Easy to install, simple controls, good price

Cons: Wiring harness can be a little tricky, was difficult to mount flush with my console

I called Crutchfield to order a different stereo. The guys at Crutchfield helped me choose a better integrated system; included the wire harness, dash kit, and free tech support. I am pleased with the sound, the looks, and the set up was straitforward. I think I saved some money to boot. Thanks Crutchfield.

Pros: Well built system and loaded with features. The USB and HD Radio tuner is a big plus.

    Cons: No cons.

Can't imagine a better head unit any any price. Installed in an 04 Infiniti G35 with Bose system. Sound is MUCH better than the factory unit, same speakers and amp. HD radio is awesome, reception is very good. AAA+++ Crutchfield tech support is the BEST. First unit ever installed and no problems with a little help from tech. Not the easiest car to work on as the climate control and radio is all one unit.

    Pros: Sound, features, price

    Cons: None to date.

First off let me say that Crutchfield are always a pleasure to order electronics from and their customer service is the best in the industry. A close friend of mine who has his own Car Installation company installed this in 25 minutes for me, as soon as I hooked up my USB Flashdrive to it and turned in the unit I could hear the difference in quality compared to my old stock Toyota receiver. The learning curve for operating the unit is pretty easy, I set up everything in a few minutes to the way I liked. As of now I still have the stock speakers in my car, but the sound is so much cleaner and clearer. I'm very happy also the wire harness and fit kit was included free, plus free shipping! The local big box store wanted to charge me over $59.00 for the Kit and Harness plus $70 for install, im glad i went with Crutchfield.

Pros: Great sound, easy to use , remote control

Great sound for the money. I installed it in my 2006 Town and Country that did not have a USB or AUX port. I liked the sound and ease of installation that I got another Kenwood for my 2004 silverado

Pros: Good sound easy install. Nice to have the SUB and AUX ports and not have to deal with the Cassette adapter. Now I can play my music off the $10 jump drive.

Cons: Small buttons, my wife has a hard time reading them. Takes some time to learn how to use all the functions.

Pros: Easy to use, the programmable color gave the edge to this unit over an Alpine. Very impressed with the HD Radio!

I have always had great luck with Kenwood products. This has many more features and outputs than I will ever use. It was great having the installation kit available since I needed to remove the stock bracket and use the installation kit bracket to get a better faceplate fit. Using the stock bracket made the radio face plate stick out too far. Having virtually a plug and play wiring harness adapter permitted me to match up the colors and functions perfectly before attempting to install the radio. Using the supplied instructions, the dash panels came out without too much of a challenge. Because of the ample length of the supplied wiring adapter I was able to plug in and test the radio before mounting it to the brackets.

Pros: Attractive face plate, HD sound capability, ease of installation, excellent written instructions.

Cons: Perhaps a little complicated operation for those of us old timers who still have 12:00 blinking on our VCR's.

This Head unit is amazing! I will tell you a brief history of why i chose this head unit. I went shopping and ended up up getting a pioneer 2013 unit. I installed it in my Mack R model semi truck and at first i noticed the pioneer Dim features were horrible and the colors were too bright. Secondly i noticed that the display was too dim unless you are at eye level. Well, i did research and decided i wanted THIS head unit. I saw it in a store and it was discontinued. That didn't stop me from ordering it though. I paired it the alpine internal amp to give it a better sound in my semi. Here is what is awesome about this head unit so far to me. The Dimmer features are well thought out.. Not only can you select the dimmer and hit yes or no, but you also have the option to change the colors and of the keys and the best option of them all is that they included a feature to give you two levels of dimmer on the keys on the right and left. How cool is that? The screen is perfect for me. It is a back lit type of screen so it can be seen from any angle. What i love most about it this is the ease of how it is to get the sound just right. I set the bass all the way up, mid up +3, treble at +5 and then there is a bass booster and loudness feature too, when it becomes too much to handle your speakers might bottom out with too much bass going through, you simply go to detailed settings, select High pass filter and turn to 100hz. I LOVE this head unit

Pros: Awesome and easy to use tuner, Dimmer capabilities(can dim key colors too) Easy to use and drive A+

    Cons: Discontinued

    Great upgrade

This was a great upgrade over the factory unit in my '05 Lancer, especially considering the price (got it on sale). The install was easy enough, utilizing the Crutchfield instructions and wiring harness, as well as the factory stereo brackets. Good features at the price point. I was pleasantly surprised with the audio tuning features, EQ adjustments, etc. Sound is an improvement over the factory unit, even with factory speakers still (next to upgrade). I have yet to really unlock on the potential on this unit.

Pros: Price, connections and capabilities for expansion, USB and front AUX input, Pandora, EQ and audio adjustments, HD tuner

Cons: The only thing I can say is very poor AM reception for me. I don't listen to a lot of AM, but the one channel I did comes in very weak. Other than that, can't say anymore.

The product is good looking and functional. I have not tried out all of the available features but the ones I have work well. My only complaint is that I'm having a hard time programming all three available FM station groups. I'll program FM 1 but then when I program FM 2 it wipes out FM 1. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but it shouldn't be that hard. Also the install was problematic. The radio does not fit well in the dash with the accompanying install kit. The radio sticks out an inch, which is OK but I actually need at least another 1/2 inch, but that will be in my install review.

Pros: Fair price for an attractive unit.

Cons: Not the best fit for the dash.

    Great product, price and company.

This unit delivers on every promise it makes. I live in a digital radio (HD) rich environment so it is almost an essential feature here. The front aux and usb ports are also very useful. Reception is good, the transition from digital to analog is very smooth when I head out of town. I put one in my commuter car when the factory unit acted up and liked it so much I bought a second to replace an older Kenwood unit in my weekend toy. There is a slight learning curve when using a usb flash drive but spend a few seconds with it and your all set. The Kenwood software makes it simple. Installation was dead easy but that may depend on the specific vehicle. Having used Kenwood products for a while now I can't see using anything else. i also can't say enough good things about Crutchfield's customer service, absolutely top-notch.

For the price it cannot be beat. I replaced the Harmen Karden deck in my 02 BMW 325i that refused to pull in AM stations and had no front aux inputs. The sound quality is spectacular and works great with the factory speakers and amp. Installation was very easy, less than an hour including the wiring of the harness adapter, and looks very clean. This is my first HD radio and I'm impressed.

This is a great unit bought it for my 08 crossfire. Super easy to install took about 20 mins from opening the box to playing my iPhone in my Car. Slick look and love that you can change the color to match the dash. Sounds great and the amount of options you have when it comes down to sound control are awesome, or you can use the presets which still sounds great.

I reviewed this item the other day (see below) and I want to amend that review. I called the Crutchfield Support line and explained my disappointment with the reception (I thought that maybe there was an antenna amplifier I could add to improve reception). The support person was quite helpful. Even though the installation instructions said to match up the wires by color (thus blue to blue, white to white, etc.) In fact, I needed to wire together a blue wire to a blue/white wire. He said that this would provide power to a built-in antenna amplifier that I didn't know that I had!!!!! At this time that seems to have worked on local stations. Of course, I have no idea if this will result in decent reception when driving across the wide open spaces of the west. I have a reasonable expectation that all will work out on that score as well.

I was interested in the X596 for 3 reasons--I wanted easy access to my iPhone music, I liked the idea of HD radio, and finally I was hoping for better reception on AM/FM as I drove around the western US. The unit does give access to iPhone/iPodTouch music (although I haven't found that it's easy to get to specific tunes or albums yet). On the subject of HD radio--I live in the Seattle metro area and there are many HD stations here so there are many choices. The radio keeps switching from digital to analog as I drive, and while this is reasonable and is done seamlessly the analog reception is not that good. My last desire (better "far off" reception) doesn't seem to be reachable. My sense is that, even locally, reception is nowhere near as good as the OEM radio. Even local AM stations are "fuzzy" which makes a difference for traffic/sports/news etc. Frankly, I don't have much hope that this radio will pull in stations of any kind when traveling the wide open spaces of WA, ID, OR, UT for instance. A few other comments. It took longer than expected to install because of confusing directions. Extra parts and pieces sent with the package make it more confusing (should I have used these parts? Why was the alternate antenna connection sent?). "Coolness" was the last thing I cared about thus the one star. A very obscure scheme for memorizing pre-set stations that was not explained anywhere but figured out by trial and error (a few hours). Update: 2.13.2013 - I had originally had serious reservations about the AM/FM reception on my new Kenwood X596. I had installed it according to the directions provided. This called for hooking up the wires same color to same color. That is, red to red, green-white to green-white, and so on. I installed the radio and was surprised to find quite poor AM/FM reception, even here in the Seattle metropolitan area, and I had little hope that I'd get any reception at all when driving across the open spaces of the US west. A few days later I called Crutchfield Support hoping that there might be an "antenna booster" of some kind that would solve the problem. What I found was that the instructions were not adequate to the task. A particular blue wire needed to be wired to a particular blue-white wire (to power a built-in antenna amplifier that I didn't know existed). Radio reception was improved dramatically. Although I can't yet speak of the reception on the open, lonely roads of the west I do have hopes that this will be at least as good as the OEM radio. So, what I learned was that Crutchfield Support is your best, first source of help if unsatisfied with a product. I also wonder how many folks are driving around with an unsatisfying sound because original instructions were incomplete or downright wrong!!

    Pros: iPhone music accessibility.

    Cons: AM/FM reception.

I only buy my car stereos from Crutchfield, the installation kits and instructions make it sooo easy! Total time to install this unit in my 2006 Exterra was 30 minutes. And once it was hooked up, it was very easy to use. I have a factory installed HD radio in my other car, and it does not get reception in my driveway. The Kenwood Excelon got a number of HD stations that I cannot get... Love this radio, it is really cool and it sounds out of this world!

Only in for one day, but sound is awesome. Controls/options are endless but appears to be intuitive. Cannnot see readout in bright sun unfortunately, but this had been commented on previously. I would highly recommend this unit. However, I DO NOT agree with Crutchfields recommendation that this fits a VW New Beetle - this unit is too deep, fitting all the wiring behind the unit in the dash was nearly impossible and unbelievably frustrating. What should have taken 20 minutes took almost 2 hours. I really hope I do not have issues down the road since I had to muscle this unit in to fit. I'm keeping my fingers crossed everything continues to work. Crutchfield will hear from me if I have problems in the future.....

Pros: All good here with the unit - highly recommend. Sound improvement is considerable and significant. Excellent!

Cons: Does not fit the VW New Beetle as recommended. Unit is too deep and getting the wiring to fit behind it is nearly impossible.

Not bad for an entry level HD Radio. After I bought this and installed it, I was a bit disappointed at the lighting options (custom display colors only for surrounding buttons, not lower buttons or LED display.) The HD radio options are okay, I wanted to seek and store only the HD stations into memory and it was a lot of work. I'd suggest you compare the other models in the series, the KDC-X9xx series is much better, this model seems like it's a cripped/feature restricted version of the KDC-X9 series receiver.

Pros: User based enhanced EQ Settings. Advanced Sub low pass filter options. High pass filter options. USB, AUX IN, Easy installation, clear sound and loud button does the job at lower volume levels.

Cons: Lack of sort and play options for music via USB drive. Also the search feature is pretty bad when searching for music on the USB. I still haven't found any music i've been searching for on a 32GB thumbdrive that has 4,248 songs in one single folder. Attenuate feature is only available from the remote

Got this to replace the stock system that was in my '03 Camry. Never realized how bad the factory sound had gotten until I put this in. Unbelievable how clear it is, especially when HD radio locks in! Seems to be pretty well built, but only time will tell. Overall, a great choice for what I was looking for, and Crutchfield service is incredible.

Pros: Great sound! Nice array of input/listening options (AM/FM, HD radio, USB, iPod/iPhone, Aux, CD).

Cons: AM radio reception isn't great. However, when it does lock in an AM station in HD, it sounds great. I realize now it'd nice to have a two-line display, but I knew what I was getting when I bought this so I can't complain too much.

Excellent head unit for the money. A couple of quirks potential buyers need to know: 1) Single line display. 2) You need to call up the clock to check the time. 3)Sound/EQ settings need to be set for each function(iPod, Pandora, Radio). While I like this feature, it is not explained in the limited manual. 4)The display color cannot be changed (only the buttons). 5) The controls/settings steps are not intuitive (study the manual and familiarize yourself with how it works and you will find that after 1 day you will be a pro).

Pros: I wanted an inexpensive stereo for my Jeep Wrangler due to the potential theft issue. This stereo has surpassed all of my expectations. I paired this with the Polk DB series speakers with Polyfill stuffed behind them and in the soundbar and all I can say is Wow! Hooking up the factory center console subwoofer was as easy as wiring it into the solid blue wire on the included harness.

Cons: ***See review. My next stereo will have 3 line display.

Cons: The radio reception went to the dogs when I put this unit it to my Accord 2006, especially AM. A power boost antenna recovered the FM, but I can get almost no AM now. Not sure if this is the radio, but my guess it is. Be aware of this if you listen to AM much.

This is an awesome product. Installation was simple because Crutchfield supplied all the necessary adapters. Stereo is good looking, sound quality is amazing in comparison to the stock head unit, and the reception is exceptional. The buttons each take care of multiple functions which is the only reason I didn't give it a 5/5 on ease of use. I like stereos with more dedicated buttons versus having to look for which button would take care of what command. Once you find which ones control what functions it becomes very easy to navigate. Overall the unit is really good especially for the price. I highly recommend it.

I upgraded from my factory stereo to this one a few weeks ago, and am very pleased. The unit looks and sounds great! I love the constantly changing color of the LED trim. The HD radio is great. This unit transitions from analog to HD radio and back again seamlessly, which is important in my rural area. I knew the one-line display would be a limitation before I bought the unit, because the Crutchfield buying guide says two lines of text are much easier to work with when scrolling to find a podcast. It wasn't a deal breaker since I didn't listen to podcasts very often. Well, now I am surprised by how much I am listening to podcasts now that I have the ability. I wish I had bought a unit with a two-line display. I don't understand the way the unit scrolls through podcasts. Unfortunately, this unit scrolls through podcasts randomly. For example, I have a backlog of 40 podcasts from one producer I want to listen to. After I played the first podcast in the series I expected the stereo to go to the next one in the series. It does not. It goes to a different, seemingly random one. I haven't figured out how to modify this. And, as other reviewers have mentioned, It's unfortunate that you can't call up the clock to see what time it is.

Pros: Sounds great. HD to Analog transitions are seamless. Color changing LED trim is attractive.

Cons: Scrolling for content on my iPod using the one-line display is difficult. After one podcast is done the next one played is apparently random.

Pros: It's easy to set up and use I haven't had any problems with it

    Cons: None

This is a good basic unit. It is nothing fancy or complex. Just an HD radio and media player. Good value and low cost.

Pros: Decent sound quality and options for playback.

    Cons: Overly complex menu system

Sound is decent, not the best I've heard. Third car stereo I've put in now. Remote is WAY TOO COMPLICATED for driving, small buttons and not safe to navigate while driving. Sony remotes are much better and easier to use. Had to read the instructions to figure out how to set up the stereo and the remote has no specific instructions. Have thought about swapping this one out for something more user friendly. I bought it for the front USB capability which is the best feature.

    Pros: USB infront

Cons: complicated remote, a pain to do all of the initial setup, faceplate popped off while I was driving.

    Great radio!

When my 6 disc changer died while on vacation I decided to upgrade the head unit in my 2001 Lincoln Town Car instead of getting a used changer. I chose the Kenwood KDC-X 596 based on customer reviews and the specifications. The Crutchfield adviser was a great help in assuring me the factory sub woofer will still function as it does with my factory Alpine unit. Everything worked out GREAT! Steering wheel control, wiring harness dash kit, right on the money. Looks great and sounds even better with no need to upgrade my factory speakers. Thanks Crutchfield for another great install experience.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, front USB, IPOD controls, HD Radio ease of install.

    Cons: NONE!

This hd cd usb radio has it all. Great price for a great piece of electronics. Hooked up to a M4100 Sound Ordnance amp with four 6x9 pioneer speakers. WOW! My system sounds better than many I hear rolling down the street. Loud and Clear and it looks cool too. Color match is awesome. My car has orange interior lights and it matches perfectly. Two day free shipping is the real deal.

Pros: cheap, great sound and quality. remote a plus.

Has everything i need for a low price, and don't forget the $50 worth of free installation gear. Has pandora, hd radio, usb spot, aux spot, ipod integration and a nice quality sound. Only replaced the stereo in my car, everything else was the same and as a result the bass increased, the loudness and the quality all increased. Installing it myself was also a unique experience!

Pros: all the features and the quality

Couldn't be happier with the radio reception. Really like the Padndora, HD radio and Iphone functions. It will take awhile to figure out all of the features and how to access them all. Only wish some of the features were more accessible with one touch instead of several propmts to get to a desired feature. Crutchfield customer service is first rate.

This CD receiver is well worth the money! My car previously had a Pioneer CD receiver installed and it's amazing how much a new receiver can change the sound quality of your speakers!

Pros: Sound quality, color selection, USB and AUX on the front, price, and looks!

Cons: My radio cover must be forced shut with this receiver, modification will be needed.

I thought this was a great purchase. This little guy has all the features I wanted and a reasonable price. Installation was easy, especially with the Crutchfield instructions, and I was up and running in no time. Some of my favorite features are how the HD Radio has three FM bands so you can program in 18 presets instead of so many that can only go up to 12. Another great feature is that, when you have an iPhone/iPod connected, you can switch between controlling the device with the deck's controls and the iPhone's own controls. The former is good for when you're driving and don't want to fumble around with you device while the second is good for when you're driving and your wife is tired of listening to what you picked so she decides to look to see what else you have in your music collection (or at least that's been my experience). I only have a few complaints. One is that the screen does not show up very well when the sun is shining on it. This isn't usually a big problem for me, but it is worth noting. Also, the interface isn't the most intuitive I've ever used. I highly recommend glancing at the user's guide so you know what all the different settings mean. Other than those two minor things I have loved every aspect of this product. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to replace a stock radio with something that can do a bit more.

Pros: HD Radio, iPhone interface, Pandoa

    Cons: Screen Brightness, UI
