Plenty of other entertainment options, too
When you're not enjoying your drive-time radio, slip in a CD to take advantage of this receiver's 24-bit digital-to-analog converter. It converts the raw data on your disc, including MP3 and WMA files, to smooth life-like sound. And convenient front-panel auxiliary and USB inputs give you access to plenty of other listening options.

Once you plug in your iPod® or iPhone®, you'll enjoy quick navigation of your playlists and albums. Plus, if you groove to Pandora® Internet radio with your iPhone, you won't miss a beat when you plug it into KDC-X596 with its built-in Pandora® controls. And you Android fans can take advantage of the Music Link app, which provides a variety of search and playback features when your phone is plugged into the front-panel USB input.

Sound-shaping tools
Wimpy bass and treble controls can't compare with the KDC-X596's 3-band EQ, high- and low-pass filters, and selectable bass boost, along with settings that let you customize the output to fit your car's speaker setup. And, speaking of customizing, you can adjust the illumination color on this Kenwood to match your vehicle's lighting.

And don't forget another Excelon sound advantage. If you're building a car audio system, one of the keys to the getting the most out of your system is a clean, powerful signal from your preamp outputs. All Kenwood Excelon receivers feature 4-volt preamp outputs that'll provide your amps with the strong signal they need for top performance.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod or iPhone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo was fairly easy to install in my '95 Accord, the instructions included were slightly vague but I figured it out. The only problem was that I wired the harness up color for color and found that I had almost zero radio reception. Well I called Crutchfield and spoke to an employee who said that I needed to wire the blue wire from the harness to the blue/white wire on the stereo. That fixed the issue and I haven't had any problems since! It made my Alpine speakers sound amazing compared to the stock unit. I definitely recommend this one.

Pros: Easy to install, simple controls, good price

Cons: Wiring harness can be a little tricky, was difficult to mount flush with my console

I called Crutchfield to order a different stereo. The guys at Crutchfield helped me choose a better integrated system; included the wire harness, dash kit, and free tech support. I am pleased with the sound, the looks, and the set up was straitforward. I think I saved some money to boot. Thanks Crutchfield.

Pros: Well built system and loaded with features. The USB and HD Radio tuner is a big plus.

    Cons: No cons.

Can't imagine a better head unit any any price. Installed in an 04 Infiniti G35 with Bose system. Sound is MUCH better than the factory unit, same speakers and amp. HD radio is awesome, reception is very good. AAA+++ Crutchfield tech support is the BEST. First unit ever installed and no problems with a little help from tech. Not the easiest car to work on as the climate control and radio is all one unit.

    Pros: Sound, features, price

    Cons: None to date.

First off let me say that Crutchfield are always a pleasure to order electronics from and their customer service is the best in the industry. A close friend of mine who has his own Car Installation company installed this in 25 minutes for me, as soon as I hooked up my USB Flashdrive to it and turned in the unit I could hear the difference in quality compared to my old stock Toyota receiver. The learning curve for operating the unit is pretty easy, I set up everything in a few minutes to the way I liked. As of now I still have the stock speakers in my car, but the sound is so much cleaner and clearer. I'm very happy also the wire harness and fit kit was included free, plus free shipping! The local big box store wanted to charge me over $59.00 for the Kit and Harness plus $70 for install, im glad i went with Crutchfield.

Pros: Great sound, easy to use , remote control

    Cons: None

Great sound for the money. I installed it in my 2006 Town and Country that did not have a USB or AUX port. I liked the sound and ease of installation that I got another Kenwood for my 2004 silverado

Pros: Good sound easy install. Nice to have the SUB and AUX ports and not have to deal with the Cassette adapter. Now I can play my music off the $10 jump drive.

Cons: Small buttons, my wife has a hard time reading them. Takes some time to learn how to use all the functions.

Pros: Easy to use, the programmable color gave the edge to this unit over an Alpine. Very impressed with the HD Radio!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always had great luck with Kenwood products. This has many more features and outputs than I will ever use. It was great having the installation kit available since I needed to remove the stock bracket and use the installation kit bracket to get a better faceplate fit. Using the stock bracket made the radio face plate stick out too far. Having virtually a plug and play wiring harness adapter permitted me to match up the colors and functions perfectly before attempting to install the radio. Using the supplied instructions, the dash panels came out without too much of a challenge. Because of the ample length of the supplied wiring adapter I was able to plug in and test the radio before mounting it to the brackets.

Pros: Attractive face plate, HD sound capability, ease of installation, excellent written instructions.

Cons: Perhaps a little complicated operation for those of us old timers who still have 12:00 blinking on our VCR's.

Awesome Tuner capabilities! Better than more expensive units

Anonymous from Aurora Il on 2/25/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Head unit is amazing! I will tell you a brief history of why i chose this head unit. I went shopping and ended up up getting a pioneer 2013 unit. I installed it in my Mack R model semi truck and at first i noticed the pioneer Dim features were horrible and the colors were too bright. Secondly i noticed that the display was too dim unless you are at eye level. Well, i did research and decided i wanted THIS head unit. I saw it in a store and it was discontinued. That didn't stop me from ordering it though. I paired it the alpine internal amp to give it a better sound in my semi. Here is what is awesome about this head unit so far to me. The Dimmer features are well thought out.. Not only can you select the dimmer and hit yes or no, but you also have the option to change the colors and of the keys and the best option of them all is that they included a feature to give you two levels of dimmer on the keys on the right and left. How cool is that? The screen is perfect for me. It is a back lit type of screen so it can be seen from any angle. What i love most about it this is the ease of how it is to get the sound just right. I set the bass all the way up, mid up +3, treble at +5 and then there is a bass booster and loudness feature too, when it becomes too much to handle your speakers might bottom out with too much bass going through, you simply go to detailed settings, select High pass filter and turn to 100hz. I LOVE this head unit

Pros: Awesome and easy to use tuner, Dimmer capabilities(can dim key colors too) Easy to use and drive A+

    Cons: Discontinued

    Great upgrade

    2005 Mitsubishi Lancer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a great upgrade over the factory unit in my '05 Lancer, especially considering the price (got it on sale). The install was easy enough, utilizing the Crutchfield instructions and wiring harness, as well as the factory stereo brackets. Good features at the price point. I was pleasantly surprised with the audio tuning features, EQ adjustments, etc. Sound is an improvement over the factory unit, even with factory speakers still (next to upgrade). I have yet to really unlock on the potential on this unit.

Pros: Price, connections and capabilities for expansion, USB and front AUX input, Pandora, EQ and audio adjustments, HD tuner

Cons: The only thing I can say is very poor AM reception for me. I don't listen to a lot of AM, but the one channel I did comes in very weak. Other than that, can't say anymore.

    Kenwood KDC-X596 and Install

FrankR from Greenfield, WI on 2/20/2013

    2000 Chevrolet Malibu
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The product is good looking and functional. I have not tried out all of the available features but the ones I have work well. My only complaint is that I'm having a hard time programming all three available FM station groups. I'll program FM 1 but then when I program FM 2 it wipes out FM 1. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but it shouldn't be that hard. Also the install was problematic. The radio does not fit well in the dash with the accompanying install kit. The radio sticks out an inch, which is OK but I actually need at least another 1/2 inch, but that will be in my install review.

Pros: Fair price for an attractive unit.

Cons: Not the best fit for the dash.

    Great product, price and company.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit delivers on every promise it makes. I live in a digital radio (HD) rich environment so it is almost an essential feature here. The front aux and usb ports are also very useful. Reception is good, the transition from digital to analog is very smooth when I head out of town. I put one in my commuter car when the factory unit acted up and liked it so much I bought a second to replace an older Kenwood unit in my weekend toy. There is a slight learning curve when using a usb flash drive but spend a few seconds with it and your all set. The Kenwood software makes it simple. Installation was dead easy but that may depend on the specific vehicle. Having used Kenwood products for a while now I can't see using anything else. i also can't say enough good things about Crutchfield's customer service, absolutely top-notch.

For the price it cannot be beat. I replaced the Harmen Karden deck in my 02 BMW 325i that refused to pull in AM stations and had no front aux inputs. The sound quality is spectacular and works great with the factory speakers and amp. Installation was very easy, less than an hour including the wiring of the harness adapter, and looks very clean. This is my first HD radio and I'm impressed.

This is a great unit bought it for my 08 crossfire. Super easy to install took about 20 mins from opening the box to playing my iPhone in my Car. Slick look and love that you can change the color to match the dash. Sounds great and the amount of options you have when it comes down to sound control are awesome, or you can use the presets which still sounds great.

jiminkirkland from Kirkland, WA on 2/7/2013

I reviewed this item the other day (see below) and I want to amend that review. I called the Crutchfield Support line and explained my disappointment with the reception (I thought that maybe there was an antenna amplifier I could add to improve reception). The support person was quite helpful. Even though the installation instructions said to match up the wires by color (thus blue to blue, white to white, etc.) In fact, I needed to wire together a blue wire to a blue/white wire. He said that this would provide power to a built-in antenna amplifier that I didn't know that I had!!!!! At this time that seems to have worked on local stations. Of course, I have no idea if this will result in decent reception when driving across the wide open spaces of the west. I have a reasonable expectation that all will work out on that score as well.

    mixed feelings

    2008 Honda Element LX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was interested in the X596 for 3 reasons--I wanted easy access to my iPhone music, I liked the idea of HD radio, and finally I was hoping for better reception on AM/FM as I drove around the western US. The unit does give access to iPhone/iPodTouch music (although I haven't found that it's easy to get to specific tunes or albums yet). On the subject of HD radio--I live in the Seattle metro area and there are many HD stations here so there are many choices. The radio keeps switching from digital to analog as I drive, and while this is reasonable and is done seamlessly the analog reception is not that good. My last desire (better "far off" reception) doesn't seem to be reachable. My sense is that, even locally, reception is nowhere near as good as the OEM radio. Even local AM stations are "fuzzy" which makes a difference for traffic/sports/news etc. Frankly, I don't have much hope that this radio will pull in stations of any kind when traveling the wide open spaces of WA, ID, OR, UT for instance. A few other comments. It took longer than expected to install because of confusing directions. Extra parts and pieces sent with the package make it more confusing (should I have used these parts? Why was the alternate antenna connection sent?). "Coolness" was the last thing I cared about thus the one star. A very obscure scheme for memorizing pre-set stations that was not explained anywhere but figured out by trial and error (a few hours). Update: 2.13.2013 - I had originally had serious reservations about the AM/FM reception on my new Kenwood X596. I had installed it according to the directions provided. This called for hooking up the wires same color to same color. That is, red to red, green-white to green-white, and so on. I installed the radio and was surprised to find quite poor AM/FM reception, even here in the Seattle metropolitan area, and I had little hope that I'd get any reception at all when driving across the open spaces of the US west. A few days later I called Crutchfield Support hoping that there might be an "antenna booster" of some kind that would solve the problem. What I found was that the instructions were not adequate to the task. A particular blue wire needed to be wired to a particular blue-white wire (to power a built-in antenna amplifier that I didn't know existed). Radio reception was improved dramatically. Although I can't yet speak of the reception on the open, lonely roads of the west I do have hopes that this will be at least as good as the OEM radio. So, what I learned was that Crutchfield Support is your best, first source of help if unsatisfied with a product. I also wonder how many folks are driving around with an unsatisfying sound because original instructions were incomplete or downright wrong!!

    Pros: iPhone music accessibility.

    Cons: AM/FM reception.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I only buy my car stereos from Crutchfield, the installation kits and instructions make it sooo easy! Total time to install this unit in my 2006 Exterra was 30 minutes. And once it was hooked up, it was very easy to use. I have a factory installed HD radio in my other car, and it does not get reception in my driveway. The Kenwood Excelon got a number of HD stations that I cannot get... Love this radio, it is really cool and it sounds out of this world!

Pros: HD radio, USB connection, iPod controls, the look!

    Cons: Haven't found any yet.

Only in for one day, but sound is awesome. Controls/options are endless but appears to be intuitive. Cannnot see readout in bright sun unfortunately, but this had been commented on previously. I would highly recommend this unit. However, I DO NOT agree with Crutchfields recommendation that this fits a VW New Beetle - this unit is too deep, fitting all the wiring behind the unit in the dash was nearly impossible and unbelievably frustrating. What should have taken 20 minutes took almost 2 hours. I really hope I do not have issues down the road since I had to muscle this unit in to fit. I'm keeping my fingers crossed everything continues to work. Crutchfield will hear from me if I have problems in the future.....

Pros: All good here with the unit - highly recommend. Sound improvement is considerable and significant. Excellent!

Cons: Does not fit the VW New Beetle as recommended. Unit is too deep and getting the wiring to fit behind it is nearly impossible.

Pros: Controls/options well organized; Excellent sound

Cons: Manual could be written better. I give it a B+; Remote doesn't work first thing on a winter morning

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not bad for an entry level HD Radio. After I bought this and installed it, I was a bit disappointed at the lighting options (custom display colors only for surrounding buttons, not lower buttons or LED display.) The HD radio options are okay, I wanted to seek and store only the HD stations into memory and it was a lot of work. I'd suggest you compare the other models in the series, the KDC-X9xx series is much better, this model seems like it's a cripped/feature restricted version of the KDC-X9 series receiver.

Pros: User based enhanced EQ Settings. Advanced Sub low pass filter options. High pass filter options. USB, AUX IN, Easy installation, clear sound and loud button does the job at lower volume levels.

Cons: Lack of sort and play options for music via USB drive. Also the search feature is pretty bad when searching for music on the USB. I still haven't found any music i've been searching for on a 32GB thumbdrive that has 4,248 songs in one single folder. Attenuate feature is only available from the remote

Love the features, price, and control. Seems a bit underpowered as I'm running it near max volume all the time. The aux can be adjusted +/- 8 and I had to go to +8. Unfortunately the iPod USB input is only adjustable -8 to 0, so it can't be boosted. This replaced a Bose 6 CD 7.1 system. Sound quality is great, I just want more oomph.

Got this to replace the stock system that was in my '03 Camry. Never realized how bad the factory sound had gotten until I put this in. Unbelievable how clear it is, especially when HD radio locks in! Seems to be pretty well built, but only time will tell. Overall, a great choice for what I was looking for, and Crutchfield service is incredible.

Pros: Great sound! Nice array of input/listening options (AM/FM, HD radio, USB, iPod/iPhone, Aux, CD).

Cons: AM radio reception isn't great. However, when it does lock in an AM station in HD, it sounds great. I realize now it'd nice to have a two-line display, but I knew what I was getting when I bought this so I can't complain too much.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent head unit for the money. A couple of quirks potential buyers need to know: 1) Single line display. 2) You need to call up the clock to check the time. 3)Sound/EQ settings need to be set for each function(iPod, Pandora, Radio). While I like this feature, it is not explained in the limited manual. 4)The display color cannot be changed (only the buttons). 5) The controls/settings steps are not intuitive (study the manual and familiarize yourself with how it works and you will find that after 1 day you will be a pro).

Pros: I wanted an inexpensive stereo for my Jeep Wrangler due to the potential theft issue. This stereo has surpassed all of my expectations. I paired this with the Polk DB series speakers with Polyfill stuffed behind them and in the soundbar and all I can say is Wow! Hooking up the factory center console subwoofer was as easy as wiring it into the solid blue wire on the included harness.

Cons: ***See review. My next stereo will have 3 line display.

Pros: Great performance, full-featured audio controls, good looks, has played every type of file (mp3, mp4, wav) that I have thrown at it. Drives my POLK speakers perfectly.

Cons: The radio reception went to the dogs when I put this unit it to my Accord 2006, especially AM. A power boost antenna recovered the FM, but I can get almost no AM now. Not sure if this is the radio, but my guess it is. Be aware of this if you listen to AM much.

I absolutly love this receiver ! Installed in a 2007 Subaru Impreza after my stock unit ate a CD. This is an awesome product. Installation was simple because Crutchfield supplied all the necessary adapters. Stereo is good looking, sound quality is amazing in comparison to the stock head unit, and the reception is exceptional. The buttons each take care of multiple functions which is the only reason I didn't give it a 5/5 on ease of use. I like stereos with more dedicated buttons versus having to look for which button would take care of what command. Once you find which ones control what functions it becomes very easy to navigate. Overall the unit is really good especially for the price. I highly recommend it.

Pros: Great looking, great sound, easy to use, great tuner, HD works very smoothly, great price

Cons: Would like to see more dedicated buttons but its not too big of a deal.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded from my factory stereo to this one a few weeks ago, and am very pleased. The unit looks and sounds great! I love the constantly changing color of the LED trim. The HD radio is great. This unit transitions from analog to HD radio and back again seamlessly, which is important in my rural area. I knew the one-line display would be a limitation before I bought the unit, because the Crutchfield buying guide says two lines of text are much easier to work with when scrolling to find a podcast. It wasn't a deal breaker since I didn't listen to podcasts very often. Well, now I am surprised by how much I am listening to podcasts now that I have the ability. I wish I had bought a unit with a two-line display. I don't understand the way the unit scrolls through podcasts. Unfortunately, this unit scrolls through podcasts randomly. For example, I have a backlog of 40 podcasts from one producer I want to listen to. After I played the first podcast in the series I expected the stereo to go to the next one in the series. It does not. It goes to a different, seemingly random one. I haven't figured out how to modify this. And, as other reviewers have mentioned, It's unfortunate that you can't call up the clock to see what time it is.

Pros: Sounds great. HD to Analog transitions are seamless. Color changing LED trim is attractive.

Cons: Scrolling for content on my iPod using the one-line display is difficult. After one podcast is done the next one played is apparently random.

The internal amp has plenty of power, surprising in some respects with the proper speakers (Polk ) The display is clean, straight forward and easy to see. You can easily change the colors to your liking. There are several adjustments you can choose from to adjust the EQ, balance, Fader, Subwoofer Freq. and power. It also has 3 pair of RCA outputs so you can do whatever you want to do as far as adding more power to your stereo. Too many delightful things to list. In a word. BUY THIS RECIEVER!! I thought this was a great purchase. This little guy has all the features I wanted and a reasonable price. Installation was easy, especially with the Crutchfield instructions, and I was up and running in no time. Some of my favorite features are how the HD Radio has three FM bands so you can program in 18 presets instead of so many that can only go up to 12. Another great feature is that, when you have an iPhone/iPod connected, you can switch between controlling the device with the deck's controls and the iPhone's own controls. The former is good for when you're driving and don't want to fumble around with you device while the second is good for when you're driving and your wife is tired of listening to what you picked so she decides to look to see what else you have in your music collection (or at least that's been my experience). I only have a few complaints. One is that the screen does not show up very well when the sun is shining on it. This isn't usually a big problem for me, but it is worth noting. Also, the interface isn't the most intuitive I've ever used. I highly recommend glancing at the user's guide so you know what all the different settings mean. Other than those two minor things I have loved every aspect of this product. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to replace a stock radio with something that can do a bit more.

I believe this is a great product for someone looking to upgrade from a factory head unit to enjoy their music and looking for a smooth introduction into car audio. It's got everything you will need for hooking up subs and external amplifier later on. I would definitely recommend this.

The radio works great as a replacement for my Bose radio on my Mercedes ML. The CD changer went kaput. I ripped the CD's to a Jump drive. I now have over 50 hours of media to listen to when traveling.

Pros: I now have an unlimited amount of listening pleasure while traveling. There are numerous features on the radio which I am still trying to figure out. Multiple FM channels and one AM channel with the available presets. Tech support was very knowledgeable and helpful.

    Cons: none

This receiver is the best! Exactly as advertised and more. It is everything that I needed, but the big surprise is the tuner, the stations I can receive surpasses any other unit I have ever owned. I used the online adviser chat and asked the questions I needed answered and they were answered promptly and provisionally. Crutchfield is my new favorite store for audio equipment! Good price, great service.

Pros: The operation is simple and elegant, everything is where you expect it to be. Great design

Cons: The display has dimming options, dim or not dimmed. I would like to see a variable dim control, at night on the unit is still a bit bright for my tastes, the multi-color display helps this, but asked for cons and it is the only one that I have:-)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this deck compared to my old sony, even with the same speaker and subwoofer set-up it sounds so much better. The 4 volt preamp out is to thank, I have the bass turned way down and it still kicks butt compared to my old system. I love that the color variation is subtle over 30 different colors, not just the primary ones some others offer and the ability to let the deck just cycle through the colors really impresses people. My only complaint would be there are almost too many options and things to tweak, but that's dumb to complain about honestly and for more basic users such as myself it does have preset EQ's that are amazing. I do need to figure out how to have it not start pandora every time I turn it on, but other than my own lack of understanding this is an amazing deck, great buy and I highly recommend it.

Pros: Sound quality, color variation, wide variety of options to play and tweak.

Cons: It doesn't complement me when I'm sad.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Kenwood Excelon KDC X-596 has so many features & options for the money spent it"s almost unbelieveable. Currently Crutchfield has it for $15 less than when I bought it from them which makes it an even better deal. It seems the only thing not on this unit is Bluetooth, but I did not want that feature anyway. The factory warranty on the Excelon product line is 2 years. I have had my unit a couple months now & intalled it myself. I am very pleased with the performance & value. Enough good things can't be said about the superior customer service and tech support of the Crutchfield team. They are seasoned, courteous professionals that are always ready to help, at least that is the experience I had with them. Other mail order companies would increase their business if they followed Crutchfield"s customer service model. I am looking forward to adding a subwoofer to round out the system and when I upgrade my mobile phone so I can stream Pandora.

Pros: So many features & options

Cons: So many features & options can make it complicated, but the owners manual is quite helpful but on top of that you get free tech support from Crutchfield if you need it.

Great Head unit. With my old alpine, the sound was droned out and sounded bad. I could only crank the volume to 23 without distortion. Now I can blast my music at 28 with clear sound. Sounds are clear and sound quality is fantastic with this Kenwood Headunit ! Sounds as though my speakers are amped with only head unit power. Will definitely buy more Kenwood products!

This has been a great replacement for the OEM stereo. i really like the feature that allows you to dim the panel lights independently of the button lights not to mention that there are a ton of colors to choose from for the button lights. i was able to perfectly match the color of the stereo lights to the cars dash and console lights making it look like it was made for the car. i did not have to look at the instructions to be able to program all the setting, because every button made sense and did what it looked like it should do. the sound is great, but i would like a little more control of the EQ. took some messing around to get the highs close to the way i like it. it could be fault of the location of the speakers in the car and would require a component set up to get it right. iPod control is very simple also. i was really impressed with the FM reception. i travel to south KS. twice a month and i would lose reception from my favorite station in Kansas City about 45 min out with the stock stereo. this one let me get about an hour and 20 min out before it lost it. i know it sounds stupid, but a few more extra tunes from my favorite station is just icing on the cake.

This is my first experiance with an HD receiver. It sounds incredible when you can lock in on a station but switches from HD to Stereo when the signal is a bit weak. It does NOT pull in FM stations like my non HD model. This is a bummer. Fortunuatly, I've never been a big fan of the radio because of the endless commercials. The four volt preamps make a huge difference with the signal to noise ratio when running a four channel amp. This six, four volt pre-outs were the selling point for me.

Pros: Six, four volt pre-outs. Built in low and high pass filters and the EQ Pro. Multi color display to match you vehicle.

    Cons: Poor FM reception.

We purchased this radio to replace a failed factory Infinity radio. Actual installation in our van took about 10 minutes thanks to Crutchfields detailed instructions. I was able to have the wiring harness preconnected and all I had to do is take out the old radio and put the new one in. We travel long distances in our van and one of the best features of this system is the ability to use a USB thumb drive with it. This enables us to carry our entire music library with us anywhere we go on a single USB stick. No more carrying CDs! Use a USB drive coupled with the Kenwood Music Editor Lite and you can search the USB and create a playlist. Great job Kenwood! Sound seems better than the original Infinity system to me. And the price was right. We'd recommend this to anyone!

For the price you cant ask for anything better... Always been partial to alpine however their more resent mid range decks seem to be lacking some pretty common features, also going back to a fixed color they went back in technology. Also im not sure what alpine doesnt get about throwing 4v preouts on their decks.... The 4v preouts and the ability to adjust color is really what drew me to this deck and i cant say im disappointed... have it hooked up to a 1800 watt mono block and a 700 watt 4ch with 4 alpine type R components and while this deck isnt the fanciest it does its job and does it well...

Pros: color change, 4v preouts, customization.

WOW! I can't believe the difference between regular radio and HD radio. It is like going from the old rabbit ears on a TV with only a handful of stations to HD TV with hundreds of stations. The sound quality and additional station formats is far superior to any radio I've ever had. Forget about satellite. HD Radio is Free!! And I've discovering the secondary audio stations are without commericals. One thing about my installation - the radio was not plug and play. I did have to sort a number of wires making sure the proper ones were attached. The friendly tech support crew was patient with me on any questions I asked. They really were patient with me.

Pros: Increased number of stations. Vastly improved audio quality. Easy to use remote control so I can keep my eyes on the road. Color coordinates with my car.

I bought this to replace my wife's stereo so I wanted something easy to use, had iPod control, and a USB port for thumb drives. Needless to say this unit was perfect. It took me all of 20 minutes to swap everything out and it works great with her factory speakers. I plugged in her iPod and was selecting play lists without having to read the instructions. My wife was very happy with how everything looked and worked and I was happy at how affordable and clean it looks not being loaded up with a ton of features she will never bother to use. I like it so much I may get one for my truck.

Pros: Simple to operate. Clean looks. Detachable face that is easy to remove/insert. USB port in the front. Built in iPod control. Good unit to build a full stereo system around. Colors are pretty sharp.

I have to say I am very impressed, I didn't want to spend a lot of money but wanted the quality and features of a higher end unit. This unit delivers, you can tweak the sound parameters many different ways, which comes in very handy when using a component setup with a subwoofer system. Having the ability to adjust the two separately is great, and a feature I now will never want to give up. I would highly recommend this product for someone looking for lots of features but a reasonable price. I have to say best bang for your buck. Replaced those first, and realized the factory stereo was not all that. This Kenwood receiver is quite amazing for the money. Kids think dad's old truck is the cool car now. Hooked up their iPod and were jammin'. Great features for the money. Thought it had Bluetooth, but I guess I got that confused with another receiver I looked at. But it's cool having the lil remote. It does all I need and with the new speakers I installed, it sure does make my commute a lot better. Loving it so far! As usual, Crutchfield gave the right cable adapters and mounting hardware. This replaced another Kenwood unit that had the pre-amps go out. It's a nice upgrade with a little bit of a face lift over the older models. The sound is great. There's a lot of features, and the ability to make the face any color under the sun is nice as well. I think the radio is a bit weak however. My older model Kenwood picked up most stations around me without problems. This one seems to get more interference and annoyingly drops out of HD signals back to analog and back again. This constant changing in clarity is very annoying. The Pandora control is a nice feature but it's cumbersome to use when driving. Wish there was an easy on the fly way to switch back to iPod / iPhone interface for easy searching and radio switching.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X596 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X596 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X596 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

3-Way Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 3-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (12.5kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

EQ Pro: The Excelon KDC-X596 features independent Bass, Treble, and Midrange control when the Preset EQ is in User mode. EQ Pro allows you to adjust the following settings for the Bass, Treble and Mid frequency levels.

    EQ Pro
Center Frequency Q-Factor Bass Extension Level
    Bass 60, 80, 100, or 200 Hz 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, or 2.00 On/Off -8 to +8
    Midrange 0.5k, 1.0k, 1.5k, or 2.5k Hz 0.75, 1.00, or 1.25 N/A
    Treble 10.0k, 12.5k, 15.0k, or17.5k Hz N/A N/A

Bass Boost: In addition, the Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2 or Off).

Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer at lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store Preset EQ and EQ Pro bass/midrange/treble tone settings for each source (CD, AM/FM, Aux, USB, iPod, and Pandora).

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-X596 features front, rear and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-X596 features an independent High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting. This feature is very helpful when you have smaller-type speakers in the front and larger-type speakers installed in the rear of the vehicle.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X596 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Tel Mute: The KDC-X596 features a cell-phone mute wire (tan) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    HD Radio

Built-In HD Tuner: With its built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio significantly improves AM/FM audio quality and reception, as well as includes information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display. HD Radio Technology will deliver high-quality digital sound. AM digital will have FM-like quality in stereo (70dB SN @ 40-15kHz), while FM digital will have CD-like quality (70 dB SN @ 20-20kHz) with static free and clear reception. The unit's built-in HD Radio tuner allows analog AM/FM tuning as well.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Station Text: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog).

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from and HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store. You can "tag" up to 50 songs.

Tuner Presets: The KDC-X596's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. The Kenwood KDC-X596 offers two preset modes.

    • Normal: You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets (total of 24).
    • Mix: A total of 6 preset stations can be assigned to the head unit's 6 preset buttons, regardless of AM/FM band. This lets you recall a preset station without switching between bands.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

Seek Modes: You can choose one of three seek modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Note: You can also setup the KDC-X596 to search only HD Radio stations.

Direct Access Tuning: You can directly access an AM/FM station by entering in the frequency number using the include wireless remote control.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Reload: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust.

    USB/Aux Inputs

USB Port: The Kenwood KDC-X596 features a front panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-up cover. The USB port enables connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device with MP3 (8-320 kbps), WMA (32-192 kbps), and AAC (8-320 kbps) music files. The USB port is compatible with USB mass storage class devices that support the FAT16 or FAT32 file system.
