Our take on the Sonos® BU-130 Bundle

Tap into your digital music collection from anywhere in your home. The Sonos Digital Music System lets you easily access the music stored on your PC, along with a wealth of tunes available from the Internet. This bundle includes two digital music players — a Sonos ZonePlayer 80 and a ZonePlayer 100 — and one Sonos Controller. Like all Sonos systems, it's a breeze to set up and use, and it offers breakthrough playback flexibility. Best of all, it delivers your music in crisp, clear detail.

Exceptionally easy multi-room music
Connect one of the ZonePlayers to your PC, and place the other in a second room for wireless access to all your music. If you use the ZonePlayer 80 in your second room, connect it to a stereo, a pair of powered speakers, or a home theater system. The ZonePlayer 100 houses a built-in 50-watt stereo amplifier, so you won't need to connect it to a traditional audio system — simply hook up a pair of speakers for smooth stereo sound.

Total control in the palm of your hand
Another main attraction of this system is the Sonos Controller, a remote that's set a new standard for user-friendly multi-room music control. Equipped with a 3.5" color LCD screen and a scroll wheel control, the Controller lets you easily navigate through the playlists and tracks stored on your computer or hard drive. You can even use this remote to cue up customized playlists on the fly for individual ZonePlayers, or for playback over your entire Sonos system. The Controller also gives you the ability to mute or adjust the volume of each of your ZonePlayers.

Compatible with popular digital music services
The Sonos system works seamlessly with Rhapsody®, Pandora®, and SIRIUS Internet Radio, three separate Internet-based digital music services. Rhapsody offers instant access to millions of songs and ad-free radio stations through your Sonos controller. You can browse Rhapsody's digital music library and create customized playlists. With Pandora's Internet radio service, you can use your Sonos controller to enter the name of your favorite songs or artists, and Pandora creates a customized Internet radio station of similar music for you to enjoy. SIRIUS Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Every Sonos system includes free 30-day trials of these services, so you can start listening the moment you take it out of the box. And because Sonos connects directly to Internet for both, you even don't have to turn on your PC.

Easy system expansion — up to 32 rooms
System expansion is hassle-free. Just add more ZP80 or ZP100 ZonePlayers anywhere you want to enjoy your music — the Sonos system can accommodate up to 32 players. And you can listen to the same music through every one — perfect for parties — or select a different playlist for each room, so that each family member can enjoy their favorite music at the same time.

Bundle 130 Contents

Bundle Contents: The Sonos Digital Music System Bundle 130 includes a ZP100 amplified Zone Player, a ZP80 non-amplified Zone Player and a CR100 Controller. You can add up to a total of 32 Zone Players and 32 Controllers to your system.

Zone Player Features

Zone Player Overview: The Sonos ZP100 Zone Player and ZP80 Zone Player work exclusively with the Sonos Digital Music System. The ZP100 contains a stereo amplifier to drive a pair of speakers. The ZP80 is non-amplified, so it will need to be connected to a separate receiver/amplifier or to a pair of powered speakers. In a multi-room sound system, the first Zone Player is connected to your home network, and each subsequent Zone Player can be wired or completely wireless (except for power and speaker wires).

Amplifier: The ZP100's built-in amplifier produces 50 watts RMS per channel (8 ohms, 20-20kHz, THD+N<0.02%). You can connect 4-ohm speakers rated to accept up to 150 watts or 8-ohm speakers rated up to 75 watts. The unit is equipped with two sets of spring-loaded binding posts.

Line Inputs/Outputs: The ZP100 has a pair of stereo RCA jacks available for connecting an external music source, such as a CD player or portable music player. The ZP100 also has stereo RCA line outputs for connecting to a home receiver and a dedicated subwoofer output for a powered sub. The ZP80 also has a pair of stereo RCA jacks available for connecting an external music source, and stereo RCA line outputs for connecting to a home receiver. Both coaxial and optical digital outputs can be found on the ZP80.

Controls: The Zone Players only have a mute button and a volume control, both mounted on the front of the units. Between the buttons lies a Zone Player LED status indicator, which flashes when powering up or connecting to the Sonos Digital Music System, and lights solid when powered up and connected to the music system.

Dual Voltage: The ZP100 is capable of accepting 115/120 Volts AC or 230/240 Volts AC. The voltage switch is located on the rear panel next to the AC power input. The ZP80 can accept 100-240 Volts AC 50/60Hz, but has no voltage switch.

Zones: You can place a ZP100 or ZP80 Zone Player in each zone where you want to listen to music. The Sonos Digital Music System can accept up to 32 Zone Players and up to 32 CP100 Controllers. With multiple zones, you can play the same song in different rooms, or different songs in different rooms.

Placement: It is not necessary to place the Zone Player in a visible place in the home. Although the unit has mute and volume controls on the front, it can be fully controlled using a CR100 controller. Typically, the Zone Player is placed in the crawl space in a house, and used to drive in-wall or in-ceiling speakers.

Range: The transmitting range of the Zone Players' built-in wireless system is approximately 100 feet, depending upon your home's layout. Thick walls, microwave ovens, and the presence of other wireless devices can interfere with or block the wireless network signals of the Sonos Digital Music Signal. When interference occurs, you can relocate the Zone Player, change the wireless channel, or make a wired (Ethernet) connection.

Desktop Controller Software: The supplied setup disc contains the software for the Desktop Controller, which allows you to control the Sonos Digital Music System from your home computer. It includes easy-to-use wizards for setup and music sharing so the music folders on your hard drive can be shared across all Zone Players. You can also add Internet Radio stations and set preferences for online updates. Once the system is set up, all you need to do is choose your music, choose your zone and press Play. Note: The Desktop Controller is compatible with Windows 2000, Windows XP (including Windows XP Media Center), and Mac OS X (version 10.3 or higher) operating systems.

Sound Settings: From your computer or CR100 controller, you can change the sound settings for each individual Zone Player in the system. Adjustable sound settings include volume, bass, treble, balance, and loudness.

Music Storage: Your digital music files can be stored wherever you please--on your computer, music server, a network-attached storage (NAS) box, or an external source like a CD player.

CR100 Controller Features

Controller Overview: The Sonos CR100 Controller works exclusively with the Sonos Multi-zone Digital Music System, and allows you to control all of your music and all of your zones wirelessly from the palm of your hand.

Sonosnet: The controller communicates with the nearest ZP100 or ZP80 Zone player through Sonosnet, a secure, peer-to-peer wireless mesh network, allowing you to extend the range of the controller to any room in your house, even outside. Because it communicates with the nearest Zone Player, rather than through one distant control point, the system avoids sources of wireless interference. The range of the Sonosnet is 50 to 100 feet, a range similar to that of an 802.11g wireless access point.

Rechargeable Battery: The CR100 is powered by a built-in, high-capacity Lithium Ion battery. Assuming typical usage, a fully charged battery will last over a week. Note: The battery is not removable from the controller.

Display: The controller features a 3.5" (diagonally measured) full color LCD screen, with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels, for viewing zone configurations, playlists, and menus, as well as full color album artwork.

Controls: The CR100 features the following controls:

  • Volume Controls:
    • Volume: A two-way "rocker" switch for adjusting the selected zone's volume up or down.
    • Mute: To temporarily silence the music in a zone, or if held for 3 seconds, silences all Zone Players.
  • Playback Controls:
    • Play/Pause
    • Skip Forward/Fast Forward
    • Previous/Fast Reverse
  • Navigation:
    • Zones: For selecting a zone to play music in, or view the music selections playing in each room. You can also create or modify zone groups to share the same music across zones.
    • Music: For browsing or selecting music; You can select new music to play, manage music queues, access playlists, and change the default settings for a Zone Player or Controller.
    • Back: For returning to the previous screen in the selected menu (zone or music)
    • Scroll Wheel: An "iPod-inspired" circular touch wheel used to navigate through a displayed list on the Controller screen. You can slide your thumb or finger clockwise to scroll down or counter-clockwise to scroll up through the list.
    • Soft Buttons: Three unmarked buttons below the LCD screen; the functionality of each button changes to reflect the available actions for the currently-displayed controller screen. The action for each button appears on the screen directly above each button.
  • Light Sensor: The controller's built-in light sensor (located on the controller's face above the LCD screen) automatically turns on the button backlights based upon the brightness of the environment.

Sleep Modes: To save battery power, the controller enters a progressive sleep mode:

  • Light Sleep: The controller will go into a "light" sleep to preserve the battery life when it is unused for a specified period of time. The screen will turn off until motion is detected (by the internal motion sensor) or a button is pressed. You can specify different amounts of time after which the controller will enter the light sleep mode when connected to a power source and when operating in a "wireless" mode.
  • Deep Sleep: The controller will enter a deep sleep when unused for a longer period of time (programmable in the menu). The controller goes through a restart cycle for several seconds when coming out of the deep sleep mode.

Indicators: During operation, the CR100 controller has several status indicators. The LCD screen indicates the battery charge level and wireless signal strength. An LED on the upper right edge of the controller glows red to indicate low battery, amber while the controller is charging, green when it finishes charging, and goes unlit to indicate the controller is in use and the battery is charged.

Dimensions

Dimensions: The Bundle 130 Components have the following dimensions:

Component Width Height Depth
ZP80 Zone Player 5.346" 2.909" 5.375" (6.875" w/RCAs)
ZP100 Zone Player 10.166" 4.443" 8.25" (8.966" w/AC cord)

Wow - Best purchase in a long time

Written By side-burn, Colorado on Sunday, June 29, 2008

I rarely rate something with maximum high-marks. However, Sonos has done everything right.

1- Super easy to use for everyone in the family.
2- Impeccable quality, even for discerning individuals like myself
3- Does one thing and does it very, very well.

Ignore comments about price. People, quality and superb function don't come cheap. I can honestly say, as an engineer and gadget geek, this is THE best thing I've bought in a long time.

I have a decent music collection, but if you subscribe to Rhapsody or Sirius, you'll have an amazing amount of music in the palm of your hands; no ripping required!

I bought 2 bundles but I am so impressed with Sonos' hardware, I'm buying another bundle for my 2 children (my son is 2 and likes to listen to soft music when he sleeps - Sonos + Rhapsody are the perfect fit!)

My only advice. Goto Sonos' website and read the FAQ. Specifically, look at the hardware compatibility list to make sure you don't have a 'cheap' component in your network that would have trouble with Sonos.

Enjoy!

Fantastic product

Written By Michael, Austin, TX on Friday, June 13, 2008

Wow. This is an impressive system. I have to admit I've only had it about an
hour so I can't comment fully on its operation over time. But the setup
experience is awesome. I'm a Mac user and pretty particular on usability. This
Sonos system exceeded my expectations. In the hour I've had it, I set up 2
ZonePlayers and the ZoneController, found all my music on a network drive and
added it to the Sonos music library and connected to my Pandora account. I've
played with alot of wireless options and nothing comes close to this system.
The controller is great - very easy to use, nice graphics. The ZP100 has plenty
of power for my speakers. I bought this system with the Mirage outdoor
speakers. I'll definitely be getting another
ZonePlayer soon to drive those outdoor speakers. This system is not cheap but
more than worth the money. Really awesome.

Most under-rated product ever

Written By John, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, April 24, 2008

Sonos is incredible. I have been enjoying my system for 2 1/2 years. Highlights:

1. It's a good value. Not cheap, but what is? Systems that cost less either (a) do much less, or (b) do it poorly. You can easily spend *much* more and get some sort of wall-mounted controls that, compared to Sonos, are a joke. Plus, systems with wall controls typically require lots of wires to be run, which is surprisingly expensive, difficult, and/or a hassle.

2. The remote control is well-done. If you can't find your music, the system is pointless. That's why 400 disc CD changers were largely useless. And systems (typically with wall-mount controls) that let you "pick a music source" are goofy -- are you supposed to run to a closet and put in a CD?

3. No proprietary music formats to lock-you-in. I converted my CDs to FLAC, which is a *lossless* format for optimum quality.

4. Sonos makes music fun for everyone. And others can easily use it without bothering the local "music geek" (you?).

5. Portable -- it is easy to pack a couple of ZonePlayers, a remote, some wires, and a "music source" (notebook computer with music files?) and some speakers and take the system on a trip. You can also take it with you when you move, re-configure zones as your househodl changes, etc.

6. Versatile. You can convert CDs, play MP3s, your friends can plug in an iPod, or simply use Sirius, etc.

7. Extra features like waking to music and sleep timers are a nice plus.

Best Consumer Electronic since the IPOD!

Written By Rick, Cary, NC on Thursday, February 07, 2008

I rarely write reviews when I buy electronics. Call me lazy.

However, I feel obligated to share my happiness with this purchase. SONOS has finally nailed it. They've built a product that works. It was so easy to install (I was worried about complex networking issues) I had none of it. I installed in 10 minutes and most of that was unpacking boxes and plugging in wires. While some may think SONOS is expensive, try to compare it to a custom whole house audio solution! Plus, and I can't stress this enough. It works. In fact, it works GREAT. Support from Crutchfield and SONOS has also been fantastic.

As I said, it's the best consumer electronic since the IPOD. I HIGHLY recommend it.

This is a great product!

Written By Ray, New York on Sunday, January 20, 2008

The Sonos music product is a dream come true. Combined with the Napster music service, I can stream any of 2 million songs to any or every room of my home, or my pool. Setup was a snap. Unpack the product, install the software, and then press 2 buttons on the unit simultaneously and the Sonos unit automatically links to the network. It is very ruggedly built and is an absolutely revolutionary product. It is accoustically outstanding. No audible hum or distortion whatsover. There is no need to even have your PC on, the Sonos system connects to the internet via your router. This is an expensive product, but well worth every penny. My friends all want to buy one since they have seen mine. Treat your self to great sounding music. Buy it, you won't be sorry and you'll be the envy of your friends.

The best thing EVER!

Written By Kipp, Washington, DC on Tuesday, December 11, 2007

I have been looking at the Sonos for quite some time. I'm so glad I finally took the plunge and bought it. I thought "i can always return it--with Crutchfield's 30 day retrun policy."

No way i'm returning it. It is really hard to conceptualize the features and functions of the Sonos until you have it in your hands. I makes music so much more a part of your life. Rhapsody, Sirius, MP3's and internet radio. So cool! I have to pry to control out of my friend's hands once they start playing with it and making play lists. I think it will be a great party toy.

If your are thinking about Sonos, I highly recommend you try it. You will really like it and don't have anything to lose. You can always return it. :)

I would rate this 6 stars if possible

Written By Frank, Chicago, IL on Monday, November 12, 2007

I am a tech nerd and after the required 10 minutes of crazy-simple set up everything worked the first time and I sat there trying to find SOMETHING I still needed to do. but alas, its just that easy.

Granted, I had my music library set up already in one shared folder and I already had my album art embedded correctly as I had read the forums prior to purchase, and I already had my media computer set up near my router. But these things simply saved the set up from being maby 30 minutes instead of my 10.

This system is unbelievable. I have not witnessed this much thought going into every detail before. The wireless controller makes this system very user friendly and the music quality is incredible. Adding more free internet radio to what is already included was simple. If you don't have enough music of your own you can add Napster or Rhapsody for low monthly fees and that music can be even thrown together with your own in playlists, etc.

The support from both crutchfield and sonos is top notch and the Sonos online forum community is awesome.

The bundle saves an incredible amount of money. My only negative is that the cost to add more rooms later makes you at least stop and think. I am NOT saying that it isn't worth the cost. for what it does, it is worth more. But at the end of the day, to get 2 rooms and the pricey controller for this price makes it hard to swallow the $500 (plus speakers) to add your next zone.
