Our take on the Sonos PLAY:1

by David Brown
Sonos
Sonos PLAY:1 wireless streaming music speaker

A world of music you can fit almost anywhere

If you have a wireless home network and a smartphone, then you're ready to start streaming music in any room in your home. All you're missing is Sonos, the easiest way to create a network of wireless music players throughout your home. Now, it's more affordable than ever to get in on the fun. The compact PLAY:1 offers easy setup, clear sound, and simple placement or wall mounting in almost any spot you'd like to liven up with some tunes.

How much music can you access with the PLAY:1? How about pretty much any music available anywhere? Get Pandora® Internet radio, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Rhapsody®, SiriusXM, and thousands of free Internet radio stations. The compact Sonos PLAY:1 lets you enjoy music from the Internet as well as songs stored on your home computers or portable devices — without filling your room with audio gear. It's perfect for small rooms and cozy corners, and setup is as easy as pushing a button. You can even pair two PLAY:1 speakers and configure them for rich stereo sound.

Expand to any (or every) room

Place Sonos players like the PLAY:1, as well as the larger PLAY:3 and PLAY:5, in every room where you want to listen to music. You can set up the players to work on your existing Wi-Fi® network. Or, you can connect any Sonos speaker to your network router, and Sonos will create its own dedicated wireless network for even better performance. You can also use a BRIDGE to create this network if you can't place a speaker near your router.

Sonos controllers

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ device to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone or tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Don't have your portable device handy? Press the "Play/Pause" button on top of the PLAY:1 to pick up the music where you left off.

Play music stored on your Apple® or Android™ portable device

Sonos now gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored on iOS and Android devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This function works on Apple devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices) as well as Android smartphones and tablets. The system even lets you connect multiple devices at once. For instance, you can queue up songs from your iPhone® to play in the kitchen while you cook, and your spouse can stream a podcast in the den on his smartphone at the same time.

Spotify®, Pandora®, SiriusXM, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Rhapsody, Pandora, Slacker, Songza, and SiriusXM Internet Radio. Spotify offers instant access to millions of songs and seemingly endless playlists. SiriusXM Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Every Sonos system includes free 30-day trials of these two services, so you can start listening the moment you take it out of the box. Pandora creates customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 Sonos music players in your system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

Features

Two Custom-Designed Drivers + Dedicated Amplifiers: The Sonos PLAY:1 uses two state-of the-art digital amplifiers individually coupled with two drivers (1" tweeter/3.5" mid-woofer) to deliver great sound to any room. The wireless music system provides pure, clean sound that is perfect for bringing room filling music to a kitchen, bedroom, office, or just about any room in your home.

Two Ways to Connect Wirelessly: The Sonos PLAY:1 brings great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through SonosNet or WiFi.

  • SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: SonosNet, a proprietary wireless mesh network technology, provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensures synchronous music playback, and avoids sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the PLAY:1's built-in wireless system is approximately 100', depending upon your home's layout. In addition to the PLAY:1, you will need a Sonos Bridge (sold separately) connected to your network router/modem via a Ethernet cable.
  • WiFi Wireless Network: The Sonos PLAY:1 can also operate over your home's existing WiFi network (802.11 b/g; 2.4GHz). Because you are connecting wirelessly to your home's existing WiFi network, you do not need to hardwire a Sonos Bridge to your router/modem. The PLAY:1's range will be dependent on your home's existing WiFi network. PLAY:1 devices manufactured after March 2014 are loaded with the proper firmware and ready to go out of the box for WiFi connectivity. All PLAY:1 devices manufactured prior to that date will require a first wire connection to facilitate a firmware upgrade and  hereafter they will be able to work over WiFi.
Note: You cannot connect the Play:1 via both SonoNet and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable. SonosNet will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance. WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi and 2.4GHz devices on your network. WiFi connectivity is not compatible with 5GHz and N routers (you will have to use SonosNet in this case).

Multi-Zone Compatibility: You can place a PLAY:1 in each zone where you want to listen to music. The Sonos Digital Music System can accept up to 32 Sonos players. With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms. The PLAY:1 can be combined with other Sonos components; including the PLAY:3 or PLAY:5 amplified wireless music players, the Connect:Amp zone player (ZP120), and the Connect zone player (ZP90); all sold separately.

Stereo or Multichannel System Compatible: You can use two PLAY:1's in a stereo pair; one speaker acts as a dedicated left, while the other speaker acts as a dedicated right. The Sonos PLAY:1 wireless speakers can also be used to create a wireless 5.1ch surround sound experience with the Sonos Playbar (616PLAYBAR, sold separately) and Sub (616SUB, sold separately). You must setup your Sonos system via the SonosNet wireless mesh network in order to connect a Sonos Playbar or Sub (not compatible with WiFi).

Music Streaming Services: The Sonos PLAY:1 gives you access to unlimited music; such as your iTunes library, your favorite music services, and thousands of Internet radio stations, shows, and podcasts.

  • Tune-In Internet Radio: The Sonos PLAY:1 includes TuneIn, an Internet Radio Service, that provides immediate access to 100,000 Internet radio stations and broadcast programs. You can easily find radio stations from all over the world broadcasting music, news, and variety programming, including archived shows and podcasts.
  • Online Music Services: The Sonos PLAY:1 works seamlessly with 7Digital, Amazon Cloud Player, AUPEO!, DAR.fm, Hearts of Space, iHeartRadio, Murfie, Pandora, Rdio, Rhapsody, SiriusXM Internet Radio, Slacker Radio, Songza, Spotify, Stitcher, & Wolfgang's Vault, plus downloads from any service offering DRM-free tracks (service availability varies by region). Check out the Sonos website for the latest online music services. (Some online services require a paid subscription.)
  • Music Library: The PLAY:1 supports playback of music from any computer or network-attached storage (NAS) device on your home network where you have shared music folders. The PLAY:1 can play music stored on up to 16 PCs, Macs or NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices on your home network, supporting the most popular audio formats. The PLAY:1 indexes your music folders so you can view your music collection by categories (such as artists, albums, composers, genres, or tracks). The PLAY:1 supports the following audio file formats - MP3 (compressed), WMA (compressed), AAC (MPEG4), iTunes, Ogg Vorbis, Audible (format 4), Apple Lossless, FLAC (lossless), WAV (uncompressed), and AIFF (uncompressed).
  • iTunes Music: The Sonos PLAY:1 supports the playback of music and playlists managed with your iTunes account (playlists are limited to 40,000 tracks). The PLAY:1 can access your iTunes music files from your network computer or directly from your Apple iPod iOS device (4.0+) running the Sonos Controller app.

Sonos Controller: The Sonos PLAY:1 allows you to control its audio setup, playback functions, and search features through the Sonos Controller software for Windows and Mac computers, or from the Sonos Controller app for Apple iOS and Android devices. You'll have access to thousands of internet radio stations, dozens of online music services, your iTunes music, and your network music library; all from one control app on your computer/laptop or smartphone/tablet.

  • Sonos Controller for Windows/Mac: The Sonos Controller software allows you to control the Sonos PLAY:1 from your computer. Simply download the Sonos Controller software from the Sonos website onto your Windows PC or Mac computer. The Sonos Controller software is compatible with Windows XP (SP3), Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Macintosh OS X (10.6 or higher) operating systems.
  • Sonos Controller for Apple iOS/Android: You can also wirelessly control the Sonos PLAY:1 from your Apple iOS device (4.0+) or Android smartphone/tablet (2.1+) running the Sonos Controller App from the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store.
Note: The Sonos PLAY:1, computer, and Apple iOS/Android device must be connected to the same home network.

Home Network Requirements: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

  • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation in download rates.
  • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a router in your home network. If you don't have a router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
  • If you are going to use a Sonos controller application on an Android smartphone, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or other tablet, you will need a wireless router in your home network.
  • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly. Or setup your Sonos component wirelessly via WiFi without any hardwire connection.
  • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.

Note: The PLAY:1 is compatible with Sonos software versions 4.0 and later. If you are adding the PLAY:1 to an existing Sonos system, be sure to check for software updates before adding the PLAY:1 to your Sonos system.

Automatic Updates: The Sonos PLAY:1 supports free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the PLAY:1 and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.

Mounting Options: You can place the Sonos PLAY:1 wherever you find the sound most enjoyable. Its compact size makes it easy to place the PLAY:1 on your desk, the kitchen counter, or on your nightstand. You can even wall mount it (optional wall bracket sold separately).

  • Rubber Feet: You can position the PLAY:1 in a vertical orientation on your bookshelf, nightstand, or desk. Integrated rubber feet protect your furniture and keep the PLAY:1 secure.
  • Wall-Mount (optional): The Sonos PLAY:1 has a 1/4"-20 integrated, threaded mounting hole. If desired, you can easily wall mount the PLAY:1 using a suitable mounting bracket (sold separately). Simply choose a location that's close to an electrical outlet.

AC Power: The Sonos PLAY:1 operates on standard household current using the supplied 6.5' AC power cord.

Have had trouble setting up with the arrival of the last of a 3 speaker system. Have had to reset up a few times. Glitches. Sound is really really nice for such a small speaker. Love the ease of control. Would like a little more with regards to some of the modes. No Apple AirPlay. :(
Pros:
Sound Ease of control
Cons:
No Apple AirPlay

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two Sonos Play: 1 speakers - one for the living room and one for the kitchen. Great sound, and I really like the Sonos system. Very simple to use, and I love that you can add more speakers VERY simply later on if you decide to expand the system.
Pros:
Great sound. Really like the Sonos system, particularly integration with Spotify and Pandora. Love the simplicity.
Cons:
Took a little while to understand the system on the iPhone, but not overly complex and I love that you can use from all your devices. Have had some trouble getting the radio to play through the system - but not sure if that's tied to a slowdown in my wireless. That said, system is definitely dependent on your wireless/router.

Sonos Play1

Written By Bruce, Dallas on Friday, August 29, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought a single Sonos Play1 speaker to try out before committing to a complete system, and I am delighted with it's performance. I did not buy a bridge, as the Play1 speaker can be connected directly to your computer with an Ethernet cable. The Play1 setup was a breeze. I use it to stream Pandora and the Play1 even works with my computer turned off. The sound quality is rich and deep with no loss of highs and mid-range tones. I am not an audiophile, but the play1 sounds good to me. The price and performance make it a winner.

I've read that the bridge may be unnecessary with the next software upgrade, so I will buy one more Play1 and pair it up to see how the stereo pairing function performs, and also to see if the one base unit will function as a bridge for the new speaker. The bridge information was a bit unclear to me from the literature. I would, and have recommended the Play1 as a great buy and excellent sound system.
Pros:
ease of use. small footprint, great sound, wireless control (app), great price for the quality

Blown away

Written By Jerry, Denver, CO on Thursday, July 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always been tempted to get a Sonos product because of the ability to cut the wires, but have always abstained until I discovered the Sonos Play:1. This definitely felt more within my price range and I was initially worried that it might come at the cost of audio quality. I was pleasantly surprised after I took the plunge as it definitely felt as though the quality of the audio was pretty good. The connection to my other speakers was flawless even though they were placed at opposite ends of a 2 bedroom house. I would recommend this for people who would like to try out a Sonos product for sure!
Pros:
Great audio Great connectivity
Cons:
App could be better in integration of custom playlists

Wow!

Exceeded all my expectations. Originally looked for a wire-less speaker to connect to I-pod. Begun looking at the Sonos play 1 speaker for outside on pool deck. Purchased it and the controller. Setup was a breeze. Found some stations on Pandora radio and the sound was great. Have some Regae Calypso playing and sounds like we're back in Jamaica. Next step is the Play 5 for inside the house. Wife loves it, hasn't played her I-Pod since the Play 1 arrivied. Very pleased.

I love it

This is my second Sonos speaker. I earlier bought a Play:3. Both sound excellent to me. I mostly use them for accessing my itunes library in different parts of the house. I wasn't sure if the Play:1 would be large enough to sound good with the range of music I listed to but it sounds great. Adding it to the current configuration couldn't have been easier. I will likely buy another very soon.
Pros:
Great sound and easy to connect

Fantastic

Written By Chris, Seminole, FL on Friday, July 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a fantastic speaker. I was impressed by the Play 5, but the Play 1 is much better, probably because of new technology. After buying one, I ordered another and paired them in stereo. The sound is clear, crisp, and has great bass for such a small speaker. Sonos uses a great power supply, which enhances the sound of this speaker. I bought the Bridge, the Connect, and two Play 1 speakers. All were ultra easy to set up. Plug it into your router and just push a button. Sonos does the rest. There is nothing to figure out. The app that runs it works great too. The Connect is hooked to my stereo but I hardly use it because the Play 1 speakers are so great. If you are trying to choose between the Connect to use with your stereo or two Play 1s, buy the Play 1s. You will not be sorry. Plus, you can move them around. Your stereo speakers are fixed.
Pros:
Clean, clear, crisp sound. Great bass. Easy to set up. Easy to add more components. Ultra portable.
Cons:
None

Great system despite setup difficulty

Written By LG, Dallas on Tuesday, June 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I stumbled upon Sonos while looking for a solution to enjoy music on my screened-in porch. It appeared to be a very cost effective solution versus wiring B-channel speakers to one of my stereo systems, and with Crutchfield's generous return policy, I figured it was worth a try. I purchased a Sonos bridge and one Play:1 speaker. Set up would have been very easy but for the fact that my wifi router lacked an Ethernet port, so it was delayed until I could replace the router. Sonos worked well the first day, but I soon discovered that my wireless AT&T Uverse TVs quit working. The Uverse technician got the TVs working but moved the Sonos bridge to a part of the house that was apparently too far to reach the Play:1 on my patio. I solved the problem by moving the Sonos bridge to a second router in my detached garage apartment, near the porch. Set up could be much easier than what I experienced if your house is smaller and you are not trying to enjoy your Sonos system outside. I am very impressed by the sound of the diminutive Play:1 and the fantastic software interface. It pulls in music stored on iphones, ipads, home computers, as well as subscription services and radio stations as seamlessly and easily as advertised. I'm a bit of an audiophile and plan to eventually purchase two Sonos Connect boxes to enjoy Sonos on my existing stereos as well as a pair of Play:1 speakers for my kitchen; however I think this will require another Sonos bridge.
Pros:
Great software and impressive sound for the cost of the speaker.
Cons:
Range limitation.

outstanding sound

Consumer Reports gave this speaker an excellent rating and they were right! I can hardly wait to add more speakers and tie it with the sound system in my home. I think the sound is better than my Bose speakers.
Pros:
Incredible sound. and easy to move from place to place. Can be integrated into home system.
Cons:
Require WiFi so it may be necessary to purchase an extender. Is not the cheapest, but then you get what you pay for.

Play One

I now own a pair of Play 5's and Play One's. Using the 'Ones' poolside under my lanai as well as in my house.....nothing but positives....easy to set up, pair, seperate, adjust the bass/treble etc. While the One's may lack some of the depth of sound, they make up for it in convenience! I have 'sold' several friends on Sonos as well...all equally pleased. I like the new Sonos format for the Ipad and Android....well done!
Pros:
Price, ease of setting up

Sonos Play 1

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

.Product performed as advertised. Unit is solid and well made.
Pros:
Clean design and compact footprint . Good range of sound, especially bass for such a small unit.
Cons:
Control buttons (mute and volume control) are small and awkward to use for adult size fingers. Instructions supplied with unit were not current and required contact with Sonos to activate. Latest Sonos tablet android app is somewhat confusing and definitely not an improvement over original. Sonos customer service was unable to answer questions immediately when queried

Written By Matt, Massachusetts on Friday, May 09, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sonos and the Play 1 are an absolute joy to listen to. I already owned a Play 5, and wanted to add a second zone. The Play 1 packs plenty of power to fill average sized rooms, and the sound quality is incredible. Sonos products are expensive but worth every penny from my experience.

Sonos PLAY:1 is seriously awesome!

Written By Timbo, Chicago, IL on Thursday, May 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I debated for a long time on whether I should purchase a PLAY:3 or PLAY:1 for the kitchen. I have a PLAY:3 in my bedroom and absolutely love it so I had concerns that the PLAY:1 wouldn't able to properly "fill" my kitchen with enough audio. I'm happy to report that the PLAY:1 does an amazing job; the audio is very crisp and it produces shockingly clean lows. Granted, I live in a townhome so my kitchen is on the small-ish side and does not have an open design. If you have a room that's more "vast", you might want to opt for the PLAY:3 or PLAY:5 to increase your chances of the audio reaching all areas. The build quality, as with all SONOS products, is top-notch.
Pros:
Amazing sound quality from small package. Easy set-up. "Wife-proof".
Cons:
NONE! BUY IT!

Great Speaker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love this speaker. I can't believe the sound quality from such a small speaker. I can't wait to add a few more to my home and fill the house with music.
Pros:
Sound quality is great. Super lows and clear highs. Sonos software is great. I can play anything on any iPhone, iPad, iTunes library and dozen of streaming services.
Cons:
They take a minute to "boot up" when you plug them in but they run their own operating system so it's expected.

Play:1 better than Play:5

Written By MarkH, Bothell, WA on Tuesday, April 29, 2014

I have four Play:5's and four Play:1's in my loft and find that I enjoy listening to the Play:1 more than the Play:5. Very surprised at the tight and accurate bass response from the Play:1. The bass from the Play:5 is flat and sometimes distorted, but what can you expect from a 3 1/2" subwoofer. The mids and highs are very nice as well. Save yourself some money and build your Sonos system using the Play:1
Pros:
Awesome sound from a very compact unit. Very stylish in design. Excellent build quality.
Cons:
Absolutely none.

Sonos Play 1: Awesome Speaker

Written By AJ, Overland Park, KS on Monday, April 28, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sonos brings to the masses wireless music streaming, flexibility and great sound at an affordable price point with the Play 1 speaker. An attractive compact speaker that can fit virtually anywhere one would like. Its diminutive size packs a colossal punch with great mid-bass and excellent highs. Sounds great as a single speaker to bring music anywhere you like and even better as a stereo pair that creates an excellent soundstage. Its the only speaker in the Sonos line that incorporates resistance to humidity to make it an excellent speaker for a bathroom. At this price, it's a great speaker... just add the Sonos Bridge to make it fully portable. Note: Only a single Sonos Bridge connected to your router is required for multiple Sonos components. At present I have Play 1 x 6, Play 3 x 2, Sonos Sub x 2, Sonos PlayBar x 1 and Sonos Connect x 2 all unified by a single Sonos Bridge connected to my router! Incredible!
Pros:
Read my review it's all there!
Cons:
None per se...unless you consider the requirement to have a Sonos Bridge to make the Play 1 portable

sonos play 1

Written By gingerB, jonesborough,TN on Tuesday, April 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Because our 2 sons have about 5 sonos speakers in their homes we would fall in love with the music all over the house. They even brought 3 speakers to the beach house and we had music all over the house all week. so we decided to take the plunge. we liked the sonos play 1 as a starter speaker and it only gets turned off at bedtime. It is clear sounding, easy to move over the house from room to room, gives off plenty of sound and we have decided that we will be investing again in more speakers for our home. it is a MUST TO PURCHASE AND YOU WILL NEVER LIVE IN SILENCE IN YOUR HOME AGAIN.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was initially hesitant about ordering two of these, after purchasing a Sonos 5, and Sonos 3, but wanted to have a small footprint speaker for our lanai, and one for our master bedroom. There is ambient noise on the lanai, and we are up 12 floors, so we also have nice breezes, for the sound to overcome. This little guy is great! Certainly not the bass capacity of either the 3, or 5, but quite good enough for the job. Also, works great in the bedroom, when I can turn off all other speakers, while my wife watches late movies in the den, and I can set the timer for 30 minutes and listen to some soft classical while going to sleep.

This is a great product and for me it was money well spent. I am very impressed with this product. For the size the sound is great and the Sonos app/controller works great using my smartphone and tablet.
Pros:
Sounds very good for size of speaker. Produces sufficient volume but I would not call it powerful. Very nice Sonos app - very easy to use and well laid out. Speaker and bridge setup was very easy. Blends well into any room - very small and unobtrusive.
Cons:
Does not appear to work with the free version of Spotify.

This was a product I always wanted. Crutchfield was giving you the bridge for free, so I bought it. I absolutely LOVE IT!!! I was nervous the speaker would sound just ok (because of its smaller size compared to the other models), but it sounds really great. I would totally buy it again.

It was really easy to set up and use the app on my iphone. What a great product with a great sound.

Play 1 is Even Better Than Expected

Written By F, Stony Point, NY on Monday, February 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've tried bluetooth speakers, and Airplay speakers, and returned both because of connectivity issues. Limited range and frequent drop out caused more frustration aggravation than I was will to put up with. Sonos eliminated those problems. Sonos also has the added benefit of creating stereo pairs, and allows you to play different music on each speaker from the same device, using the Sonos app. Fantastic!! I bought 3 for now. Two setup as a stereo pair in my family room, and another as a single in my bedroom. Will definitely be adding others!
Pros:
Great range, simple setup, no signal loss or dropouts, and Fantastic sound!!
Cons:
Can't think of too much in the way of cons. Maybe a bit expensive, but the great sound, ease of setup, and flawless operation make them worth the price.

Extremely Surprised!

Written By DanB, Montclair, NJ on Friday, January 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I already had a Sonos system in the house but was looking for a portable solution to provide music in any room that doesn't already have speakers, at any time. I was a bit reluctant to purchase the Play 1, wondering just how good a small unit like this could sound and if it were truly worth $199. I was very skeptical and based my purchase entirely on my happiness with my current Sonos system as well as Crutchfield's great return policy.

The first thing I noticed was just how heavy the Play 1 is, clocking in at over 5 pounds. The power plug location is quite clever, plugging in at the bottom of the unit and running out towards the bag through a notch in the unit. This assures that the plug will not loosen up or fall out since the weight of the unit keeps it in. Setup was extremely simple, which is typical of a Sonos device. I played a wide variety of music, from Iron & Wine to Damien Rice, Dr. Dre, some zydeco music, and jazz. There is nothing the Play 1 couldn't handle. I was shocked by how much bass this pumps out and not the tinny bass response of cheap single unit speakers but well rounded bass typical of speakers much more expensive.

I like that the unit has a metal mounting point for speaker mounts. There is the option of plugging into an ethernet jack or going wireless. I went the wireless route and after some initial hiccuping, it played without any problems for the next hour.

Sonos continues to surprise me. Worth every penny.
Pros:
Compact, rich bass and full crystal clear range of sound, wireless or wired.
Cons:
Requires AC power, no battery.

sonos changed my life!

Written By Matt, California on Saturday, January 04, 2014

I bought a play:1 and got the bridge for free. Then received a play:3 for Christmas. Set them up in the bathroom and kitchen respectively. WOW! The sound is incredible, the setup is a cinch. The wife can listen to Britney while she's getting ready and I can listen to the game. I can't stop playing and listening to it!! I can pull into the garage and pop the game on from my phone and "group" them together so no matter where I am I am hearing what I want to hear. Truly an ingenious system. I also love how I can get XM, pandora, my iTunes, and spotify with a couple clicks. Already buying a couple more for the spare room and garage!
Pros:
Connectivity, simplicity, sound, looks (not in that order)
Cons:
I hope sonos will make an outdoor version. Would love to put one out near the hot tub. I guess that's not a con though...just wishful thinking

OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Written By Chuck P, Near St. Louis on Saturday, January 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK, folks...I'm the guy that researches something to death before I buy it; just ask my wife!! I purchased the Sonos Bridge, Connect, Play 1 and Play 3, all at once. The Bridge was free. Good deal.

So, I would expect for the money that equipment I've never owned before to be good products. The Sonos equipment isn't good, it's amazingly great!! Fractional time required to set it up. Attach the Bridge to the router using the supplied ethernet cable. Thanks, Sonos!! And off you go. Download the app to the iPhone and BOOM! Start adding speakers and the Connect and WHAM! No problems or errors.

You don't know me from Adam, but this is incredible and easy. The sound from the Play1 is equal to, if not better than the Play3. After a few minutes getting used to the app on the iPhone (and I mean a few minutes, like 3 or 4), it's all in front of you.

Different music/radio/broadcasts/podcasts in each room. Even better, from around the world. No kidding. I'm listening to a jazz station from Germany and a sports talk station in Dublin, Ireland. And even more mind blowing, is, I'm also listening to the ONLY radio station in Antarctica...a Folk music station. Holy Cow baby!!!

The Connect plugs into any open RCA or TOS Link input on the back of my home theater receiver and the entire home theater is another source of Sonos magic. Just make sure to make the output Fixed and not Variable. Other than that, my entire house is now filled with the same or different music
Pros:
Ease of setup. Sound quality. Adjustable Bass, Treble and Loudness. Looks of the components. Play 3 has little rubber feet to protect nice furniture. Everything. It even gets NOAA weather radio broadcasts from any city in the U.S.
Cons:
If you unplug the power cord of any Sonos component, you have to make sure you re-add the component to your list in the app. Not battery powered. Be prepared to pay $ to play. These are only minor Cons, though.

I currently have 4 sonos play 5s and have been very happy with all of them. I got this one for my wife's office, and was shocked at how good it sounded. The bass coming from such a small speaker was incredible. It's sonos so it synced seamlessly with all of the other components that we had previously set up in no time. It sounds amazing in a small room.
Pros:

Cons:

Sonos: Play 1

Written By StuB, Albuquerque, NM on Monday, December 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I been using the Sonos: Play 1 for about 3 weeks now. I was initially worried like another reviewer about the sound output and quality from such a small device in a very large listening space. But was I surprised. The sound output and quality was tremendous. Sound separation is excellent even in at low volume levels. Setup was very easy with the Sonos Ipad app. Be sure and connect the bridge first to your system then other Sonos products. I paired two units together as stereo. I really enjoy the online radio station streaming music capabilities. The only negative is the cost. But you get what you pay for and I very happy with the purchase. I plan on buying the Sonos soundbar in the future and using the Play 1's as rear sound effects in a 5.1 system.
Pros:
Very easy setup, great sound
Cons:
Expensive

SONOS PLAY:1

Written By Jan, Paso Robles, CA on Sunday, December 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added this gem to my existing SONOS CONNECT for use in the kitchen. Setup was incredibly easy and pain free; wireless high quality audio from Pandora streams flawlessly. Placement of the PLAY:1 was also easy, both because of its small size as well as good looks, blends in perfectly on the kitchen table. Volume and Pause control buttons on are well placed on top side of unit for quick adjustments. Having tried other wireless audio streaming solutions (Bluetooth based) in the past with limited (inadequate) success, I have recommended SONOS to friends for several years; now I will be adding more PLAY:1s in other audio deficient rooms (bathrooms, guest rooms, garage etc. All of the above considered, the price represents good value, especially when combined with outstanding tech support from SONOS.
Pros:
PLAY:1 is a perfect size and source for background music ranging from classical piano to jazz with full bass; audio quality is very good making listening even at moderate volume levels a shear pleasure
Cons:
none whatsoever

Compact size. Wall mountable. Great sound

You should get one (or more) of these!

I am very impressed with the Play:1. I was prepared for much more setup than is actually required. Plug in the speaker and bridge, download the app, and play music. The app walks you through a very simple setup, maybe a few minutes. The direct connection to the internet without using the phone for data is great. Your phone or computer is only the remote used to control it. It will directly access music on your devices, internet radio, or local radio stations. Sound quality is really good for something of its size, not much bigger than a pop can. The Play:1 happily fills a living room with sound. The bigger units must be fantastic. The ability to group speakers and play different music at different volumes in each room is really cool. I purchased this as a gift and if you're considering the same, definitely do it.
Pros:
Flexibility, easy setup and operation, direct internet connection
Cons:
We've been using it for about a week and haven't found any yet.

Great sound, easy to set up. I added the Play 1 to my Sonos system to have music in the bedroom. Can set timer to turn off after I fall asleep and has alarm to wake me up in the a.m.

Great little unit for streaming music

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Tad expensive. But it set up easily, sounds good and connected up to more than one device, and operates from more than one device seamlessly. Works great in a smaller room. Little tinny at higher volumes required to fill a larger room. Overall pretty good sound. - I think it would be great with a 2nd Play 1 unit in stereo even for a larger room. Works great in our kitchen, being a little smaller than the living room. I will definitely be looking at the other Sonos products and likely be ordering a 2nd Play-1 for other rooms and or stereo for our living room.
Pros:
Easy setup. Portable (its a bit heavy and you do need a plug in close by where you want it located). Sounds good
Cons:
limit to the sound reproduction. its good for most music, but its not a set of full size speakers and lacks solid bass for a large room.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just receied my Play:1 and added it to my Sonos network. The unit was placed the bedroom and it sounds fantastic! I only ordered the one unit, but I will most likely be ordering the second unit in the near future. Like all of my Sonos Products, this unit is very well constructed and installation took less than 15 minutes.
Pros:
Simple, sounds great and occupies very little space.
Cons:
none

Sonos Play 1

When it works it is a fabulous speaker but it keeps unlinking for no apparent reason and I constantly have to reset the component and/or the bridge. This also happens when I have it linked to my Ipad 4- this is very annoying. Otherwise the sound is great and it is easy to use outside of the above.

Expensive but worth it. Great sound from the smallest component. I run pandora on it for home and office background. The nicest part is there are no interruptions. No maintenance. No restarting my iPod. Its great.
Pros:
Simplicity
