Our take on the Sonos PLAY:1

by David Brown
Sonos
Sonos PLAY:1 wireless streaming music speaker

A world of music you can fit almost anywhere

If you have a wireless home network and a smartphone, then you're ready to start streaming music in any room in your home. All you're missing is Sonos, the easiest way to create a network of wireless music players throughout your home. Now, it's more affordable than ever to get in on the fun. The compact PLAY:1 offers easy setup, clear sound, and simple placement or wall mounting in almost any spot you'd like to liven up with some tunes.

How much music can you access with the PLAY:1? How about pretty much any music available anywhere? Get Pandora® Internet radio, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Last.fm, Rhapsody®, SiriusXM, and thousands of free Internet radio stations. The compact Sonos PLAY:1 lets you enjoy music from the Internet as well as songs stored on your home computers or portable devices — without filling your room with audio gear. It's perfect for small rooms and cozy corners, and setup is as easy as pushing a button. You can even pair two PLAY:1 speakers and configure them for rich stereo sound.

Expand to any (or every) room

Place Sonos players like the PLAY:1, as well as the larger PLAY:3 and PLAY:5, in every room where you want to listen to music. The players connect to the Internet and communicate with each other using Sonos' proprietary wireless network. If you have your router in a room where you won't have a Sonos player, use a BRIDGE to connect to your network. Once you have one speaker connected, you're free to add others without connecting them to a BRIDGE or your router.

Sonos controllers

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ device to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone or tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Don't have your portable device handy? Press the "Play/Pause" button on top of the PLAY:1 to pick up the music where you left off.

Play music stored on your Apple® or Android™ portable device

Sonos now gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored on iOS and Android devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This function works on Apple devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices) as well as Android smartphones and tablets. The system even lets you connect multiple devices at once. For instance, you can queue up songs from your iPhone® to play in the kitchen while you cook, and your spouse can stream a podcast in the den on his smartphone at the same time.

Spotify®, Pandora®, SiriusXM, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Rhapsody, Pandora, last.fm™, Slacker, Songza, and SiriusXM Internet Radio. Spotify offers instant access to millions of songs and seemingly endless playlists. SiriusXM Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Every Sonos system includes free 30-day trials of these two services, so you can start listening the moment you take it out of the box. Pandora and last.fm create customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 Sonos music players in your system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

Features

Two Custom-Designed Drivers + Dedicated Amplifiers: The Sonos PLAY:1 uses two state-of the-art digital amplifiers individually coupled with two drivers (1" tweeter/3.5" mid-woofer) to deliver great sound to any room. The wireless music system provides pure, clean sound that is perfect for bringing room filling music to a kitchen, bedroom, office, or just about any room in your home.

Note: You can use two PLAY:1's in a stereo pair; one speaker acts as a dedicated left, while the other speaker acts as a dedicated right. The Sonos PLAY:1 wireless speakers can also be used to create a wireless 5.1ch surround sound experience with the Sonos Playbar (616PLAYBAR, sold separately) and Sub (616SUB, sold separately).

SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: The Sonos PLAY:1 brings great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project. SonosNet, a proprietary wireless mesh network technology, provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensures synchronous music playback, and avoids sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the PLAY:1's built-in wireless system is approximately 100', depending upon your home's layout.

Note: Thick walls, microwave ovens, and the presence of other wireless devices can interfere with or block the wireless network signals of the Sonos Digital Music Signal. When interference occurs, you can relocate the PLAY:1, change the wireless channel, make a wired (Ethernet) connection, or add a Sonos Bridge between the router and the PLAY:1 to extend the wireless range.

Multi-Zone Compatibility: You can place a PLAY:1 in each zone where you want to listen to music. The Sonos Digital Music System can accept up to 32 Sonos players. With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms. The PLAY:1 can be combined with other Sonos components; including the PLAY:3 or PLAY:5 amplified wireless music players, the Connect:Amp zone player (ZP120), and the Connect zone player (ZP90); all sold separately.

Network Connection: The Sonos PLAY:1 connects to your home network via its rear-panel Ethernet jack which connects to your broadband router. If the PLAY:1 will not be located near your router, you can connect a Sonos Bridge (616BR100, sold separately) to the router instead; the Sonos Bridge will then wirelessly connect to the PLAY:1. One Sonos component must be connected to your broadband router.

Music Streaming Services: The Sonos PLAY:1 gives you access to unlimited music; such as your iTunes library, your favorite music services, and thousands of Internet radio stations, shows, and podcasts.

  • Tune-In Internet Radio: The Sonos PLAY:1 includes TuneIn, an Internet Radio Service, that provides immediate access to 100,000 Internet radio stations and broadcast programs. You can easily find radio stations from all over the world broadcasting music, news, and variety programming, including archived shows and podcasts.
  • Online Music Services: The Sonos PLAY:1 works seamlessly with 7Digital, Amazon Cloud Player, AUPEO!, DAR.fm, Hearts of Space, iHeartRadio, Last.fm, MOG, Murfie, Pandora, Rdio, Rhapsody, SiriusXM Internet Radio, Slacker Radio, Songza, Spotify, Stitcher, & Wolfgang's Vault, plus downloads from any service offering DRM-free tracks (service availability varies by region). Check out the Sonos website for the latest online music services. (Some online services require a paid subscription.)
  • Music Library: The PLAY:1 supports playback of music from any computer or network-attached storage (NAS) device on your home network where you have shared music folders. The PLAY:1 can play music stored on up to 16 PCs, Macs or NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices on your home network, supporting the most popular audio formats. The PLAY:1 indexes your music folders so you can view your music collection by categories (such as artists, albums, composers, genres, or tracks). The PLAY:1 supports the following audio file formats - MP3 (compressed), WMA (compressed), AAC (MPEG4), iTunes, Ogg Vorbis, Audible (format 4), Apple Lossless, FLAC (lossless), WAV (uncompressed), and AIFF (uncompressed).
  • iTunes Music: The Sonos PLAY:1 supports the playback of music and playlists managed with your iTunes account (playlists are limited to 40,000 tracks). The PLAY:1 can access your iTunes music files from your network computer or directly from your Apple iPod iOS device (4.0+) running the Sonos Controller app.

Sonos Controller: The Sonos PLAY:1 allows you to control its audio setup, playback functions, and search features through the Sonos Controller software for Windows and Mac computers, or from the Sonos Controller app for Apple iOS and Android devices. You'll have access to thousands of internet radio stations, dozens of online music services, your iTunes music, and your network music library; all from one control app on your computer/laptop or smartphone/tablet.

  • Sonos Controller for Windows/Mac: The Sonos Controller software allows you to control the Sonos PLAY:1 from your computer. Simply download the Sonos Controller software from the Sonos website onto your Windows PC or Mac computer. The Sonos Controller software is compatible with Windows XP (SP3), Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Macintosh OS X (10.6 or higher) operating systems.
  • Sonos Controller for Apple iOS/Android: You can also wirelessly control the Sonos PLAY:1 from your Apple iOS device (4.0+) or Android smartphone/tablet (2.1+) running the Sonos Controller App from the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store.
Note: The Sonos PLAY:1, computer, and Apple iOS/Android device must be connected to the same home network.

Home Network Requirements: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

  • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation in download rates.
  • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a router in your home network. If you don't have a router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
    • If you are going to use a Sonos controller application on an Android smartphone, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or other tablet, you may need a wireless router in your home network.
  • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly.
  • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.

Note: The PLAY:1 is compatible with Sonos software versions 4.0 and later. If you are adding the PLAY:1 to an existing Sonos system, be sure to check for software updates before adding the PLAY:1 to your Sonos system.

Automatic Updates: The Sonos PLAY:1 supports free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the PLAY:1 and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.

Mounting Options: You can place the Sonos PLAY:1 wherever you find the sound most enjoyable. Its compact size makes it easy to place the PLAY:1 on your desk, the kitchen counter, or on your nightstand. You can even wall mount it (optional wall bracket sold separately).

  • Rubber Feet: You can position the PLAY:1 in a vertical orientation on your bookshelf, nightstand, or desk. Integrated rubber feet protect your furniture and keep the PLAY:1 secure.
  • Wall-Mount (optional): The Sonos PLAY:1 has a 1/4"-20 integrated, threaded mounting hole. If desired, you can easily wall mount the PLAY:1 using a suitable mounting bracket (sold separately). Simply choose a location that's close to an electrical outlet.

AC Power: The Sonos PLAY:1 operates on standard household current using the supplied 6.5' AC power cord.

sonos play 1

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Because our 2 sons have about 5 sonos speakers in their homes we would fall in love with the music all over the house. They even brought 3 speakers to the beach house and we had music all over the house all week. so we decided to take the plunge. we liked the sonos play 1 as a starter speaker and it only gets turned off at bedtime. It is clear sounding, easy to move over the house from room to room, gives off plenty of sound and we have decided that we will be investing again in more speakers for our home. it is a MUST TO PURCHASE AND YOU WILL NEVER LIVE IN SILENCE IN YOUR HOME AGAIN.

The Sonos system was easier to setup than I expected and sounds better than I expected. The Play:1 speaker sounds full and rich. This entire system (from Bridge to software to speakers) is well planned out and well implemented. Well done Sonos, well done!

Terrific speaker...don't underestimate

Written By Anonymous, Naples, FL on Thursday, March 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was initially hesitant about ordering two of these, after purchasing a Sonos 5, and Sonos 3, but wanted to have a small footprint speaker for our lanai, and one for our master bedroom. There is ambient noise on the lanai, and we are up 12 floors, so we also have nice breezes, for the sound to overcome. This little guy is great! Certainly not the bass capacity of either the 3, or 5, but quite good enough for the job. Also, works great in the bedroom, when I can turn off all other speakers, while my wife watches late movies in the den, and I can set the timer for 30 minutes and listen to some soft classical while going to sleep.

This is a great product and for me it was money well spent. I am very impressed with this product. For the size the sound is great and the Sonos app/controller works great using my smartphone and tablet.
Pros:
Sounds very good for size of speaker. Produces sufficient volume but I would not call it powerful. Very nice Sonos app - very easy to use and well laid out. Speaker and bridge setup was very easy. Blends well into any room - very small and unobtrusive.
Cons:
Does not appear to work with the free version of Spotify.

This was a product I always wanted. Crutchfield was giving you the bridge for free, so I bought it. I absolutely LOVE IT!!! I was nervous the speaker would sound just ok (because of its smaller size compared to the other models), but it sounds really great. I would totally buy it again.

It was really easy to set up and use the app on my iphone. What a great product with a great sound.

Play 1 is Even Better Than Expected

Written By F, Stony Point, NY on Monday, February 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've tried bluetooth speakers, and Airplay speakers, and returned both because of connectivity issues. Limited range and frequent drop out caused more frustration aggravation than I was will to put up with. Sonos eliminated those problems. Sonos also has the added benefit of creating stereo pairs, and allows you to play different music on each speaker from the same device, using the Sonos app. Fantastic!! I bought 3 for now. Two setup as a stereo pair in my family room, and another as a single in my bedroom. Will definitely be adding others!
Pros:
Great range, simple setup, no signal loss or dropouts, and Fantastic sound!!
Cons:
Can't think of too much in the way of cons. Maybe a bit expensive, but the great sound, ease of setup, and flawless operation make them worth the price.

Extremely Surprised!

Written By DanB, Montclair, NJ on Friday, January 24, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I already had a Sonos system in the house but was looking for a portable solution to provide music in any room that doesn't already have speakers, at any time. I was a bit reluctant to purchase the Play 1, wondering just how good a small unit like this could sound and if it were truly worth $199. I was very skeptical and based my purchase entirely on my happiness with my current Sonos system as well as Crutchfield's great return policy.

The first thing I noticed was just how heavy the Play 1 is, clocking in at over 5 pounds. The power plug location is quite clever, plugging in at the bottom of the unit and running out towards the bag through a notch in the unit. This assures that the plug will not loosen up or fall out since the weight of the unit keeps it in. Setup was extremely simple, which is typical of a Sonos device. I played a wide variety of music, from Iron & Wine to Damien Rice, Dr. Dre, some zydeco music, and jazz. There is nothing the Play 1 couldn't handle. I was shocked by how much bass this pumps out and not the tinny bass response of cheap single unit speakers but well rounded bass typical of speakers much more expensive.

I like that the unit has a metal mounting point for speaker mounts. There is the option of plugging into an ethernet jack or going wireless. I went the wireless route and after some initial hiccuping, it played without any problems for the next hour.

Sonos continues to surprise me. Worth every penny.
Pros:
Compact, rich bass and full crystal clear range of sound, wireless or wired.
Cons:
Requires AC power, no battery.

I got this for my wife to use in the bathroom while she gets ready. The app that goes with it is great she can listen to radio stations, music on her iphone, and the 3,000+ songs on my desktop.
Pros:
Sound, loudness, and crisp tone
Cons:
Could use a battery option to be a little more portable

Extremely easy to set up! Sounds fantastic. I use primarily in the bathroom. I enjoy the fact you can push play on the unit and you will pick up to what you last we're listening to. Not necessary to go grab the iPad to play the sonos. I am looking forward to the next Play 1 for the kitchen!
Pros:
Ease. Sound. Limitless listening choices.
Cons:
Only wish it were a little bit cheaper so I could have a whole house full of them!

sonos changed my life!

Written By Matt, California on Saturday, January 04, 2014

I bought a play:1 and got the bridge for free. Then received a play:3 for Christmas. Set them up in the bathroom and kitchen respectively. WOW! The sound is incredible, the setup is a cinch. The wife can listen to Britney while she's getting ready and I can listen to the game. I can't stop playing and listening to it!! I can pull into the garage and pop the game on from my phone and "group" them together so no matter where I am I am hearing what I want to hear. Truly an ingenious system. I also love how I can get XM, pandora, my iTunes, and spotify with a couple clicks. Already buying a couple more for the spare room and garage!
Pros:
Connectivity, simplicity, sound, looks (not in that order)
Cons:
I hope sonos will make an outdoor version. Would love to put one out near the hot tub. I guess that's not a con though...just wishful thinking

OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Written By Chuck P, Near St. Louis on Saturday, January 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK, folks...I'm the guy that researches something to death before I buy it; just ask my wife!! I purchased the Sonos Bridge, Connect, Play 1 and Play 3, all at once. The Bridge was free. Good deal.

So, I would expect for the money that equipment I've never owned before to be good products. The Sonos equipment isn't good, it's amazingly great!! Fractional time required to set it up. Attach the Bridge to the router using the supplied ethernet cable. Thanks, Sonos!! And off you go. Download the app to the iPhone and BOOM! Start adding speakers and the Connect and WHAM! No problems or errors.

You don't know me from Adam, but this is incredible and easy. The sound from the Play1 is equal to, if not better than the Play3. After a few minutes getting used to the app on the iPhone (and I mean a few minutes, like 3 or 4), it's all in front of you.

Different music/radio/broadcasts/podcasts in each room. Even better, from around the world. No kidding. I'm listening to a jazz station from Germany and a sports talk station in Dublin, Ireland. And even more mind blowing, is, I'm also listening to the ONLY radio station in Antarctica...a Folk music station. Holy Cow baby!!!

The Connect plugs into any open RCA or TOS Link input on the back of my home theater receiver and the entire home theater is another source of Sonos magic. Just make sure to make the output Fixed and not Variable. Other than that, my entire house is now filled with the same or different music
Pros:
Ease of setup. Sound quality. Adjustable Bass, Treble and Loudness. Looks of the components. Play 3 has little rubber feet to protect nice furniture. Everything. It even gets NOAA weather radio broadcasts from any city in the U.S.
Cons:
If you unplug the power cord of any Sonos component, you have to make sure you re-add the component to your list in the app. Not battery powered. Be prepared to pay $ to play. These are only minor Cons, though.

Great sound in a small package

Written By MV, New Orleans on Saturday, January 04, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I currently have 4 sonos play 5s and have been very happy with all of them. I got this one for my wife's office, and was shocked at how good it sounded. The bass coming from such a small speaker was incredible. It's sonos so it synced seamlessly with all of the other components that we had previously set up in no time. It sounds amazing in a small room.
Pros:
Easy setup Great sound for a small space Very full bass
Cons:
None that I have seen yet. The price is steep for one speaker, but it sounds great and can be paired with other speakers for additional options.

Sonos: Play 1

Written By StuB, Albuquerque, NM on Monday, December 30, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I been using the Sonos: Play 1 for about 3 weeks now. I was initially worried like another reviewer about the sound output and quality from such a small device in a very large listening space. But was I surprised. The sound output and quality was tremendous. Sound separation is excellent even in at low volume levels. Setup was very easy with the Sonos Ipad app. Be sure and connect the bridge first to your system then other Sonos products. I paired two units together as stereo. I really enjoy the online radio station streaming music capabilities. The only negative is the cost. But you get what you pay for and I very happy with the purchase. I plan on buying the Sonos soundbar in the future and using the Play 1's as rear sound effects in a 5.1 system.
Pros:
Very easy setup, great sound
Cons:
Expensive

So I placed this speaker in a small bathroom and the sound is clear, even at high volumes. I have the play 5 and was anticipating a large step down in sound quality with the play 1 but was surprised when this didn't occur. Only had this speaker for a month but am happy I've bought into the Sonos family
Pros:
Easy set up, sounds great
Cons:
Not cheap but worth the money

SONOS PLAY:1

Written By Jan, Paso Robles, CA on Sunday, December 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added this gem to my existing SONOS CONNECT for use in the kitchen. Setup was incredibly easy and pain free; wireless high quality audio from Pandora streams flawlessly. Placement of the PLAY:1 was also easy, both because of its small size as well as good looks, blends in perfectly on the kitchen table. Volume and Pause control buttons on are well placed on top side of unit for quick adjustments. Having tried other wireless audio streaming solutions (Bluetooth based) in the past with limited (inadequate) success, I have recommended SONOS to friends for several years; now I will be adding more PLAY:1s in other audio deficient rooms (bathrooms, guest rooms, garage etc. All of the above considered, the price represents good value, especially when combined with outstanding tech support from SONOS.
Pros:
PLAY:1 is a perfect size and source for background music ranging from classical piano to jazz with full bass; audio quality is very good making listening even at moderate volume levels a shear pleasure
Cons:
none whatsoever

You should get one (or more) of these!

Written By Brett, Inman KS on Wednesday, December 18, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very impressed with the Play:1. I was prepared for much more setup than is actually required. Plug in the speaker and bridge, download the app, and play music. The app walks you through a very simple setup, maybe a few minutes. The direct connection to the internet without using the phone for data is great. Your phone or computer is only the remote used to control it. It will directly access music on your devices, internet radio, or local radio stations. Sound quality is really good for something of its size, not much bigger than a pop can. The Play:1 happily fills a living room with sound. The bigger units must be fantastic. The ability to group speakers and play different music at different volumes in each room is really cool. I purchased this as a gift and if you're considering the same, definitely do it.
Pros:
Flexibility, easy setup and operation, direct internet connection
Cons:
We've been using it for about a week and haven't found any yet.

Great little unit for streaming music

Written By AndyK, Seattle on Wednesday, December 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Tad expensive. But it set up easily, sounds good and connected up to more than one device, and operates from more than one device seamlessly. Works great in a smaller room. Little tinny at higher volumes required to fill a larger room. Overall pretty good sound. - I think it would be great with a 2nd Play 1 unit in stereo even for a larger room. Works great in our kitchen, being a little smaller than the living room. I will definitely be looking at the other Sonos products and likely be ordering a 2nd Play-1 for other rooms and or stereo for our living room.
Pros:
Easy setup. Portable (its a bit heavy and you do need a plug in close by where you want it located). Sounds good
Cons:
limit to the sound reproduction. its good for most music, but its not a set of full size speakers and lacks solid bass for a large room.

When it works it is a fabulous speaker but it keeps unlinking for no apparent reason and I constantly have to reset the component and/or the bridge. This also happens when I have it linked to my Ipad 4- this is very annoying. Otherwise the sound is great and it is easy to use outside of the above.

Good but...

Written By PaulA, Centreville, VA on Wednesday, November 20, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been looking at Sonos for a while but thought the price of entry was a little high if I did not like it, until the PLAY:1 came along bundled with a free bridge. Sound quality is good enough, but for the money I would have hoped for better, hence only 4 stars. I have the bridge in the basement and the PLAY:1 on top of the fridge and so far the sound has never dropped. I have to admit I got a PLAY:5 soon after getting this to experiment with the line-in feature, as I have a webcam setup as a baby monitor and can feed that to the Sonos network via the line in. Wish the bridge had a line in too, or there was a software based player that integrated into the Sonos network. Will probably get a CONNECT:AMP next as I am hoping that will give me the convenience of the Sonos network and the quality of bigger speakers further apart (but yes with wires ;-) )
Pros:
It's wireless music made easy. Build quality appears good so far, it is wall mount ready and the power lead is nicely integrated (actually better than the PLAY:5) Can play local media on Android device as well as from your library.
Cons:
Sound quality is good, but not that good for the amount you pay. The PLAY:1 appears to be mono. You need a PLAY:5 or above for a line-in. Does not appear to support WMA Lossless, but then again not too many devices do, so I am ripping my CDs again anyhow. Not really a con, but something to take note of. You need an iOS / Android device or some such to act as a remote.

Surprised!

Written By B, Charlotte NC on Sunday, November 10, 2013

Let me start by saying I understand that this is a small speaker and limited by its size. That being said it's exceptional for its size and nothing I've heard from similar products (even some larger ones...*cough* BOSE) comes close. Mids and highs are crystal clear! It does suffer in the low end department on some rock and especially hard rock. However it's unbelievable for jazz and lighter stuff and I couldn't be more impressed. May wind up taking back for a play3 or 5 or I may not. Might even get another and make a pair. I have a sneaky suspicion that a stereo pair of these and a sonos sub would be out of this world!
Pros:
Portability Mids and highs Easy Better than the competition
Cons:
Little flubby on the low end doesn't like a lot of rock or metal

Written By pbeard, Austin, TX on Monday, November 04, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I researched and consider buying a Sonos system for over year. What held me back was the high cost of the speakers. When Sonos rolled out the Play:1 at a lower price point, and threw in a free bridge, it was a no-brainer to pull the trigger. I'm glad I did. The sound quality of the speaker is terrific. But the best part is the easy interface with my iPhone and iPad. I plan on buying a Play:5 and Connect over the next several months to build up the system. I knew that I'd be impressed with the Sonos system, but it managed to exceed my already lofty expectations.

Sonos Play one

Written By sschork, 94118 on Sunday, November 03, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Been looking at Sonos for a while. With bluetooth, airplay, wifi speakers trying to compete with Sonos, I was a bit hesitant the last few years to see if Sonos would be able to stand the competition. If you ask anyone with a Sonos system, you will know why they are so loved, it is absolutely better than those other wireless systems.

In the end the play1s and Sonos are amazing and easy to use. The 2 play1s we have are great and Competitively priced, I will be buying more.
Pros:
One of the key points is that the app is easy to use, I need wife buy in to build up the system I want. And she is very happy with how easy it is to use the sonos app. The other requirement from my wife is that the speakers not be too big. With the release of the play1, that requirement is also met. The speakers are great, and can put out a lot of volume. They look great and sound great (granted we are not audiophiles).
Cons:
Upon initial set up the Play1 has "loud" turned on, with is essentially base boost, and makes the audio sound muffled. You can easily turn this off via the app which solves the problem. ( Sonos in general) Lack if line in, so you cannot add a bluetooth dongle or connect to another audio source, or connect to tv. I would like to run a stereo pair of play1s with my TV audio. The other issue I have with Sonos is the lack of being able to connect a powered sub other than their $700 one.

Although a expensive this is a very good performer for such a small form factor. It delivers crisp, clear sound. The big plus is that it can be paired for stereo sound and used as rear speakers with the play bar.

Cons:

Like all Sonos products, this one is well made and sounds incredible, even for its small size. I own eight Sonos components so I had no hesitation in buying this one on the day it was released. This unit is portable, has a play/pause button (which none of the other units have), and is humidity resistant, meaning you can place it on the bathroom counter. Now every room is covered with Sonos.
Pros:
portability, styling, consistent with the Sonos ecosystem

I am a long-time Sonos user... picked up the Play:1 to fill a hole in my set up (the GARAGE!). This little speaker system puts out a lot of sound for its size. Tuck it in the corner to boost the low end a bit and it sounds really full. I have a Play:5 as well, and while it's not as nice sounding as that, it is very good for $199. Love it.
Pros:
Sound, Price, Fit and Finish

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well we hung ours on the wall in our kitchen with the "Pinpoint AM24W White Wall-mount Speaker Bracket" and all is well. This little guy puts out a bigger sound than expected and is sized just right for this type of space (as I'm sure a bedroom, den, etc.). Love it so far, along with the Play 5s. What's a bit confusing though is it's advertisement about it being 'humidity resistant, even for use in a bathroom,' however the instructions indicate the opposite (to not expose to humidity, etc.). In our case, it didn't matter much, but maybe with another unit I'd consider an under eave, outdoor use (minus the winter of course).

Perfect addition to a Sonos Home

Written By Lrettig, Mary Esther, FL on Monday, October 21, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Play:1 is the perfect addition to our Sonos home. We have four Play:3's, one Play:5, a sub and now one Play:1 speaker. Right now you can walk just about anywhere in our house and hear continuous music, except for 2 spare bedrooms and the office. I plan to put a Play:1 in these locations.
Pros:
*The Play:3/5 have fuller sound and more bass than the Play:1. I was impressed with the sound of the Play:1 when I first listened to it by itself. In side by side comparison, I can definitely tell the difference between the speakers, but the Play:1 is totally adequate by itself. *Smaller size *Lower price than the other speakers- good for lesser used rooms of the house
Cons:
Sound is not as full as the other speakers.

I purchased the Play:1 mainly to listen to podcasts in the kitchen. The sound exceeded my expectations when playing music. It is very balanced - decent low end for a small speaker and crystal clear mid and highs. It's a great addition to a Sonos system to fill in rooms that might be too small for a Play:5 or Play:3. I highly recommend it.
Pros:
Great sound for its size Looks great Very high quality construction No external power brick
Cons:
No aux input

Does the Play:1 work seamlessly with iTunes and iTunes Match (via a Mac computer)? [ Brad  Feb 03, 2014 ]

  • In a word, yes. I use a Sonos Bridge to connect my Sonos speakers to my home network. My music is all stored on a MacBookPro along with the Sonos App. From the Sonos App you need to "update Music Library now" and this will enable Sonos to see all you music, including playlists. Now you can use the Sonos App - on whatever device(s) you are using - to access and play all your stored music. I use both an iPod Touch and my laptop depending where I am in the house to access my music. Hope this helps. David [ DAVID   Feb 04, 2014 ]
  • No, there are seams. Background: The PLAY:1 combines a speaker with a dedicated, embedded music-playing computer. You send commands to the speaker from your phone, tablet, or computer telling it what music to play, and then the computer in the speaker takes it from there. The device you use to send commands to the speaker is, generically, a SONOS "Controller." It can be your computer, your smartphone, your tablet, or a battery-powered dedicated SONOS gizmo. The seams: You install the SONOS app on your Mac. Then, using that app, you tell SONOS where your music files are. This is part of the setup. SONOS will scan the directory, create an index, and call these files your Music Library. You can set it to re-scan every day so it stays current. When you want to play music from your Mac, you tell the PLAY:1 to want to hear something from your Music Library. The PLAY:1 will use the index to figure out where the files are, then start streaming them. Assume the files are in your iTunes library, and that your iTunes library is on a disk attached to your Mac. The PLAY:1 will realize this by looking at the index, and then ask your Mac for permission to stream the files. That means your Mac must be turned on and connected to the network. You do _not_ need to have iTunes running. The Mac is acting as a music-server. iTunes Match let you remove files from your Mac and store them in the Cloud. Once you remove them from your Mac, the PLAY:1 will not be able to see them. You will need to download them again. iTunes Match also lets you buy a song on one device, and listen to it on all your devices. Let's say you buy a song on an iPhone. In order to listen to it on your PLAY:1, you can either (1) play directly to the PLAY:1 from your iPhone using the SONOS iPhone App or (2) from your Mac by (a) downloading the song from the cloud with iTunes, (b) re-scanning your Music Library with SONOS, then (c) selecting the song from your Music Library on the SONOS Controller. • It works perfectly with iTunes and love the Sonos Play:1. I don't subscribe to iTunes Match so I can't comment on that. [ STEVE   Feb 03, 2014 ]
  • Hello Brad, I'm sorry I can't answer your question. I don't use apple equipment with my sonos. I use the streaming services that are excellent. [ KEITH   Feb 03, 2014 ]
  • Brad, this doesn't directly address your question, but my Play 1 does work seamlessly with iTunes off of my windows PC which is where my music Library is located. I don't use iTunes Match. [ TERRY   Feb 03, 2014 ]
  • You'll be using Sonos's application (which you download and install on your mac, iphone, ipad, etc.) to play music over the speakers, however it integrates seamlessly with iTunes. Any changes you make in iTunes (adding, removing, editing songs) will also be updated in the Sonos application. [ DANIEL   Feb 03, 2014 ]
I live in a smaller town and am interested in listening to our local radio station on the Play 1. While the listed apps, pandora, iHeartRadio, etc., have great selections, they don't have our local stations. I use an app called iTuner. Will the Play 1 work with this app ? Or are there other ways to get the Play 1 to stream local radio stations? [ Smalltown  Dec 02, 2013 ]

  • I am not sure if it will play your local station. That station would need to stream music over the internet for this to work with it. The Play1 does not have a radio tuner. However, in the Sonos app, there is a Radio function where you can search for local stations. You would have to check to see if your specific station exists in the App. [ SCOTT   Dec 06, 2013 ]
  • Hello - The Play:1 is an excellent product which provides great sound with deep bass; I just ordered a second to pair them together. I purchased this unit after buying a sonos:5 for my son and a Sonos:3 for my daughter. I was looking for a way to stream Spotify and local radio stations as well. I use TuneIn which is available in the Sonos app and this allows me to stream local radio, police, etc.. I would recommend downloading this app to see what local stations you may receive. [ MARTIN   Dec 02, 2013 ]
  • My experience is that you can listen to most local radio stations on the Sonos system via "Tune In radio" or "IHart Radio" - [ JOHN   Dec 02, 2013 ]
  • I don't use the Sonos Play: 1 with local stations so I can't give you an answer--sorry. [ MARK B   Dec 02, 2013 ]
  • Hello, i think i answer that question. The play 1 will only play from sources within the Sonos app. Pandora , spotify , etc all have interfaces that allow the Sonos app to connect to your account for said services. So if you can't find your source among the many available through the Sonos app you will not be able to play in the Play 1. I could be wrong (often i am). However, I have a Sonos ecosystem of 8 zones with almost all of the devices (connect, connect:amp, play3 and the recently added Play 1). As such I have tinkered a lot with the system. Lastly, the connect and Play 5 have a "line in" input which theoretically will allow you to play your local radio station throughout your sonos ecosystem. I was able to have my appletv connect to sonos this way. Hope that helps! [ Munir   Dec 02, 2013 ]
