Bring more bass to your Sonos system

Sonos subwoofer

The Sonos SUB makes it easy to add depth and bass punch to your music. This wireless subwoofer features a matte black finish and weighs in at a hefty 36 pounds. It's packed with Sonos technology — two force-canceling woofers are positioned face to face in this unusually and stylishly shaped cabinet for loud, crystal-clear bass and minimal vibration. And a variety of adjustments can be performed to tailor the sound to your specific room using the Sonos controller app. Whether you're in a great room with high ceilings or a small office or den, the Sonos SUB is ready to bring new bass impact and greater dynamics to your listening experience.

Exceptionally easy to set up

Just like the rest of the Sonos family, the Sonos SUB is a breeze to get up and running. Place the SUB in the room where you want more bass from your PLAY:3, PLAY:5, or CONNECT:AMP and press a button. The SUB connects to other Sonos players using Sonos' proprietary wireless network, so you can place it anywhere in your room where it'll have access to power. It doesn't need to be connected to your speakers or Sonos player.

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, Android™ phone, or computer to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Pandora® Internet radio, SIRIUSXM, Spotify®, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Pandora® Internet radio, Spotify, Napster®, and SIRIUS Internet Radio. SIRIUS Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Pandora® creates customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 players in your Sonos system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought a Sonos system after moving into a house on a slab with no way to hide wires. Old house had old Bose with wires in the crawlspace. The Sonos set up pretty easily and the sound is pretty good. Bose did spoil me after 10 years with it. The surround sound is good but the sound from ordinary TV, such as watching the news, is a little tinny through my Sound Bar. Music from my iPhone 5s library is excellent. The Sub Woofer and rear surround speakers, Play 3s, were a little tricky to balance properly but after some tweaking while running a BluRay movie I got it balanced. Overall a good system, my wife appreciates no wires, but don't expect superior sound like a Bose system run through a Sony ES receiver.

Pros: Wireless, relatively easy set up

Cons: Sound above adequate but not superior; very expensive

Cons: expensive

Sonos Sub = Awesome

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sub makes the SONOS system come alive with bass. I have it paired with 2 Play 5 units in the living room and they really light up now that the Sub is handling the low frequencies. I have not tried it in a room with Play 3 units but I would expect you might be able to get very nice sound without going to Play 5 units. The Sub is easily adjustable to be anything from very subtle to overpowering.

Pros: SONOS ease of installation and setup. Easy configuration and "tuning".

Cons: HEAVY! You may want help lifting it out of the box!

Product Research

Overview: The Sonos Sub is a wireless powered subwoofer, designed to add deep bass (down to 25 Hz) to your Sonos listening experience. The Sub works with any amplified Sonos player, including the Play:3, Play:5, Connect:Amp (ZonePlayer ZP120), or ZP100. It does not work with un-amplified Sonos players, such as the Connect (ZP90) or the ZP80.

Design: The Sonos Sub features two force-canceling speakers (3" x 6" race-track shaped drivers) positioned face-to-face to provide deep, rich bass with no resonance from the cabinet. The speakers are powered by two Class-D digital amplifiers, perfectly tuned to match the speakers. The speakers are mounted into a unique cabinet that features an acoustic slot and dual acoustic ports that encircle the enclosure to enhance the Sub's performance.

Placement: Out of the box, the Sonos Sub is designed to stand upright on the integrated rubber feet. You can also lay the sub horizontally on its side, if desired. Four self-adhesive felt feet are provided, if you choose to mount the Sub on its side. A guide for placing the felt feet on the Sub is included.

Set-up: The Sonus Sub can be associated with any amplified Sonos player. The Sub is compatible with Sonos software versions 3.8 and later. Once you have positioned the Sub in the room, you can press the Join button on the side of the Sub in order for the system to recognize it. The system automatically adjusts the audio settings to perfectly balance the Sub and the paired Sonos component for best performance. All of the filter settings, active equalization, and time alignment are done digitally through a state-of-the-art Digital Signal Processor (DSP). During setup, you will be prompted, through the Sonos Controller software, to set the subwoofer's level and phase. In some cases, you will be prompted to select the size of the stereo speakers (compact, bookshelf/ceiling, or floor) connected to the amplified player. If you move the Sub to another room, you can easily reconfigure the audio and room association settings.

Connections: The Sub has only two connections, both located on the bottom of the enclosure: the power cord connection, and a single Ethernet port (RJ-45) for connecting the Sub to a wired home network.
