Our take on the Sonos® Connect:Amp (ZonePlayer™ 120)

by Tara W.
ZonePlayer 120

Listen to music from your computer and the Internet on any speakers

Get ready for more of your favorite music in any room of your house. The Sonos Connect:Amp makes it simple and you won't have to run wires around your home. Hook the Connect:Amp up to a pair of speakers, and it connects to the Internet and your computer wirelessly through the Sonos Bridge (sold separately).

ZonePlayer 120

Powerful amplifier for crystal-clear playback

A built-in 55-watt-per-channel amplifier delivers your music in full-bodied, dynamic stereo sound. And the compact design of the ZonePlayer means it can fit in much smaller spaces than traditional stereo components.

Pair the Sonos ZonePlayer 120 with Audioengine's high-performance P4 speakers for a great-sounding — and cosmetically matched — system.

Sonos controllers

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ phone to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Rhapsody®, PANDORA®, SIRIUS, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Rhapsody, PANDORA®, Spotify, last.fm™, Napster®, and SIRIUS Internet Radio. Rhapsody offers instant access to millions of songs and ad-free radio stations through your Sonos Controller. SIRIUS Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Every Sonos system includes free 30-day trials of these two services, so you can start listening the moment you take it out of the box. PANDORA® and last.fm create customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 ZonePlayers in your Sonos system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

Features

Overview: The Sonos ZP120 Zone Player works exclusively with the Sonos Digital Music System, and contains a stereo amplifier to drive a pair of speakers. In a multi-room sound system, the first Zone Player is connected to your home network, and each subsequent Zone Player can be wired or completely wireless (except for power and speaker connection).

Class D Amplifier: The ZP120's built-in Class D amplifier produces 55 watts RMS per channel (8 ohms, 20-20kHz, THD+N<0.02%). You can connect 4-ohm speakers rated to accept up to 150 watts or 8-ohm speakers rated up to 75 watts. The unit is equipped with two sets of spring-loaded binding posts.

Controls: The Zone Player only has a mute button and a volume control, both mounted on the front of the unit. Between the buttons lies a Zone Player LED status indicator, which flashes white when powering up or connecting to the Sonos Digital Music System, and lights solid when powered up and connected to the music system.

Dual Voltage: The ZP120 is capable of accepting 115/120 Volts AC or 230/240 Volts AC. The voltage switch is located on the rear panel next to the AC power input.

Zones: You can place a ZP120 ZonePlayer in each zone where you want to listen to music. The Sonos Digital Music System can accept up to 32 ZonePlayers (either ZP90 or ZP120 with a built-in amplifier) and up to 32 Controllers (616CR200 or 616CR100). With multiple zones, you can play the same song in different rooms, or different songs in different rooms.

Placement: It is not necessary to place the Zone Player in a visible place in the home. Although the unit has mute and volume controls on the front, it can be fully controlled using a CR100 controller. Typically, the Zone Player is placed in the crawl space in a house, and used to drive in-wall or in-ceiling speakers.

Range: The transmitting range of the ZP120's built-in wireless system is approximately 100 feet, depending upon your home's layout. Thick walls, microwave ovens, and the presence of other wireless devices can interfere with or block the wireless network signals of the Sonos Digital Music Signal. When interference occurs, you can relocate the Zone Player, change the wireless channel, or make a wired (Ethernet) connection.

Desktop Controller Software: The supplied setup disc contains the software for the Desktop Controller, which allows you to control the Sonos Digital Music System from your home computer. It includes easy-to-use wizards for setup and music sharing so the music folders on your hard drive can be shared across all ZonePlayers. You can also add Internet Radio stations and set preferences for online updates. Once the system is set up, all you need to do is choose your music, choose your zone and press Play.  The Desktop Controller is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7; as well as Macintosh OS X (10.4 or higher) operating systems.

Sound Settings: From your computer, you can change the sound settings for each individual Zone Player in the system. Adjustable sound settings include volume, bass, treble, balance, and loudness.

Music Storage: Your digital music files can be stored on your computer, music server, a network-attached storage (NAS) box, or an external source like a CD player.

Network Requirements

Hardware: In order to play the digital music files stored on your computer throughout the Sonos Digital Music System, you must meet the following hardware requirements:

  • Ethernet: You must have an Ethernet network interface connection in your computer. If you do not have one, you will need to buy and install a Network Interface Card (NIC) before setting up your system.
  • Modem: It is highly recommended that you have a DSL/cable modem, or LAN-based high-speed Internet connection. It is not designed for a dial-up system.
  • Router: If you have a cable or DSL modem connected directly to your computer, you should have a router connected between your modem and your computer to maintain your computer's security. If you don't have a router, you will need to buy and install one before setting up your system.

System Requirements: In addition to the above-described hardware, your computer must have the following:

  • CPU: 500 MHz processor or better
  • RAM: 128MB RAM minimum/256MB RAM recommended
  • Compatible Operating Systems: Windows XP (SP2 or higher), Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Macintosh OS X (Version 10.4 or higher)
  • Compatible Playlist Formats: Rhapsody, MusicMatch, Windows Media Player, WinAmp, or iTunes
  • Compatible Play Formats: MP3, WMA (not including lossless), AAC (MPEG4), WAV/LPCM (uncompressed), AIFF (uncompressed), FLAC (lossless), Ogg Vorbis, Apple Lossless, and Audible Format 4. The unit is firmware upgradeable to support future audio formats.
    • Note: Apple "Fairplay" and Microsoft "Plays-for-Sure" DRM-encrypted files are not currently supported.

Automatic Updates: The ZP120 allows for free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the ZP120 and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.

Connections

Speaker Outputs: The ZP120 Zone Player has two pairs of spring-loaded binding posts, which can accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, and bare wire. The terminals cannot accept dual banana plugs or spade connectors. You can connect a pair of 4-ohm or 8-ohm speakers to the ZP120.

2-Way Ethernet Port: There are 2 female RJ-45 connectors for plugging in Category 5 Ethernet cables. You can connect a router, computer, or an additional network device, such as a network-attached storage (NAS) device. Specifications: 10/100 Mbps, auto MDI/MDIX.

Analog Inputs: You can connect an external source, such as a portable music player or a CD player, to the unit's left and right RCA jacks. The input jacks automatically detect a device is connected, and the source appears in the system. Music from the external source can be played in any zone. The volume is controlled by the Sonos Digital Music System, however, the playback (pause, music selection, etc.) must be controlled at the source.

Subwoofer Output: The ZP120 is equipped with a mono RCA subwoofer output, allowing you to connect the Zone Player to a powered subwoofer. The system will detect when a cable is connected to the subwoofer output, and apply an 80Hz low pass filter.

FANTASTIC AND EASY TO USE!!

Written By GregN, Delray Beach, FL on Monday, January 09, 2012

I love this product. I downloaded the APP on my iPhone, installed the included DVD on my computer and pushed two button's on the front of the Sonos Connect AMP. I was listening to music in under three minutes. I started out with two Sonos Connect AMP's and I've already expanded to six in under two months. What an excellent system. Everyone that has visited our home is amazed at the listening options that are available with this system. You can listen to the same music all over the house, or different music in every room all at once.

Ringo at Crutchfield recommended this system!!! Thank you so much!!

Pros:
Simple setup and easy to install. Its small and designed beautifully. The system is easy to add to and expand.
Cons:
The power plug connection port could be a bit more secure, but its nothing that is an issue.

second one I bought

Written By Big Fish, Syosset, NY on Wednesday, October 26, 2011

this is great for anyone that does not want to look at wires. I was having my siding re-done on my house and I decided to install some out door speakers in the front and the back of my house. This system is not completely wireless. I needed to run wires from the speakers to the zone player itself which needs to be near a power source. I did need a few hundred feet of high quality speaker wire to do all four speakers. It is great to be able to sit on my front step and/or my back deck and listen to music and control it from my ipad/iphone. It is an amazing innovation! You will love it!
Pros:
ease of install, innovative idea, and just all around cool.
Cons:
it may be bigger than it appears on the website.

AMAZING!!!

Written By Scott, Newburgh, NY on Friday, October 07, 2011

Without a doubt the best purchase i have made in years. Bought the Zone play 120 and the Play 3 speakers, was affraid the speakers would not have good sound being that they were small but they sound great with good bass and highs. Let me tell you, i am an electronics junkie and have probably owned 5 different systems in the past 7 years and this is without a doubt the best i have ever purchased. Sounds amazing and easy to set up. Using the iphone app is awsome and easy to use. I would definately recommend to anyone interested in a wireless system for your home. Almost nothing you cant do with this system. I was in shock with how nice this system is.

WoW

Written By Bovuk, Chicago on Friday, September 16, 2011

When i told my wife i wanted to get this system, she was mad at me for investing $650 but after i installed it, she loves it. We downloaded the controller app on both of our IPhones and we can control the music from there (also my neighbor downloaded the app onto his IPhone. Now when he sneaks over, he makes adjustments to the sound and song selection and my wife thinks i'm doing it and drives her nuts but that was funny) Anyway, the selection of Radio Stations, Internet Music Services plus my music collection gives us the ability to play just about any music under the sun. My home is not big enough to add additional zones, but i can see how that would be great as well. We use it to contol the music in our back yard and it was always a pain to run inside to change the music or be just limited to ITunes.

Great system and now all my nieghbors are looking to buy this as i'm the envy of the block!

Great Product

Written By Arnold, Dix Hills, NY on Saturday, September 03, 2011

Really great product, and easy to install. When you have a large home the price does add up you'll probably end up buying more and more of them once you play with it. Free speakers @ Crutchfield are a nice touch as they can't mess with the base price of this product due to supplier restrictions.

Absolutely the Best all house audio you can get...

Written By tripper, McKinney, Texas on Tuesday, August 16, 2011

The ZP120 I purchased from Crutchfield was for my 12th wired music zone (6 ZP100s, 4ZP 120s, 2 ZP80s), I also have a Play 3 and older S5 (now the Play5) and one zonebridge. As with all my other zones, setup took a matter of minutes. The Sonos Mesh Network makes it simple to add zones either wired or wireless...no need to enter WEP codes, just a few simple touches to the controller and the zoneplayer and before you know it you are in business. Sound quality is excellent (don't skimp on your speakers!) and the ease of combining or dropping zones is unsurpassed. Sonos also makes it easy to build your system gradually. I started out four years ago with three zones in my older home, using the wireless capability of the Mesh Network. In my new home, I was able to wire Cat5 everywhere I needed a zone, eliminating even the remote chance of wireless interference. This easy exapandability makes growing your sytem simple and more affordable. Sonos is designed to be upgraded, not thrown away and replaced like so many other electronics are (as you can see in my equipment list, I still have a number of older models and they work seemlessly with the new stuff as well). This is a great system I highly recomend to any music lover who wants to access their library...as well as all the music services available on the internet in any room in their home. Enjoy!!

Exceeded expectations

Written By Kayakor, Downingtown, PA on Saturday, July 16, 2011

Ordered it yesterday. It arrived today. Way to go Crutchfield.

As for the Zoneplayer 120. Only had it up and running for an hour or three. It has exceeded my expectations in almost every area. Sounds great. Looks great. Works great. Sonos is setting the standard of what home audio will be in the not too distant future.

The only hitch so far has been rather slow performance controlling it from an iPad. But c'mon?!?! Controlling from my wifes' iPad? My Droid? My PC? My wifes' PC? All seamlessly! Interactively! My entire music library with virtually infinite control. Thousands of radio stations? Pandora, et al? And the ability to grow and adapt. An I am confident I will figure out the iPad performance issue eventually.

Oh, did I mention it sounds great?

My wife, who is as techno-phobic as they come, now wants a ZP90 for the entertainment center and a ZP S5 that she can put out on the deck for parties, or move around the house.

I'll try to come back and re-review in a few weeks to see how it holds up.

Expensive, but worth it.

Written By CDF, Tennessee on Monday, May 16, 2011

Expensive. Easy set up, I have it powering some outdoor Definitive Tech speakers, sound great. Really is the easiest way to create wireless capabilities. Easily expandable, although adding more zones adds up $$$ quickly. Having an ipod touch/ipad eliminates the need for the Sonos remote saving you money.

All around really happy with purchase, and if you are satisfied with Crutchfield customer service than you will absolutely LOVE Sonos service!
