All the music you want — anywhere in your home

Sonos® systems let you tap into music from your personal collection and from the Internet, anywhere in your house. The compact Sonos PLAY:5 makes it easy to get started or add an additional room — it's a self-contained music system with built-in speakers. You'll get top-notch, room-filling sound from a player that easily fits on a counter in the kitchen or an end table in the living room. The PLAY:5 teams up five drivers — two tweeters, two midranges and a subwoofer — with five tailor-matched amplifiers to deliver full-bodied, lifelike sound.

Exceptionally easy multi-room music

Sonos makes setup easy

Place Sonos music players like the PLAY:5 in every room where you want to listen to music. The players connect to your home network — either via Wi-Fi® or by connecting one player to your router via Ethernet to create a dedicated Sonos network. This network, known for its extensive range and superior performance, gives you house-wide access to tunes stored on your PC along with a wealth of Internet audio choices. (We recommend adding the Sonos BOOST to connect all players to your network wirelessly.)

Sonos controllers

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ phone to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Rhapsody®, Pandora® Internet radio, SiriusXM, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Rhapsody, Pandora, Spotify, Napster®, and SiriusXM Internet Radio. Rhapsody offers instant access to millions of songs and ad-free radio stations through your Sonos Controller. SIRIUS Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Every Sonos system includes free 30-day trials of these two services, so you can start listening the moment you take it out of the box. Pandora creates customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

Play music stored on your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®

Sonos now gives you convenient wireless access to music and podcasts stored in the Music app of iOS devices, for playback throughout your entire Sonos system. This function works on devices running iOS6 or later (see below for full list of compatible Apple devices). The system even lets you connect multiple Apple players at once. For instance, you can queue up songs from your iPhone to play in the kitchen while you cook, and your spouse can stream a podcast in the den at the same time.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 Sonos music players in your system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

Connections

Sonos Music System

Two Ways to Connect Wirelessly: The Sonos Play:5 brings great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project through SonosNet or WiFi.

  • SonosNet Wireless Mesh Network: SonosNet, a proprietary wireless mesh network technology, provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensures synchronous music playback, and avoids sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the Play:5's built-in wireless system is approximately 100', depending upon your home's layout. In addition to the Play:5, you will need a Sonos Boost (sold separately) connected to your network router/modem via a Ethernet cable.
  • WiFi Wireless Network: The Sonos Play:5 can also operate over your home's existing WiFi network (802.11 b/g; 2.4GHz). Because you are connecting wirelessly to your home's existing WiFi network, you do not need to hardwire a Sonos Boost to your router/modem. The Play:5's range will be dependent on your home's existing WiFi network. Play:5 devices manufactured after March 2014 are loaded with the proper firmware and ready to go out of the box for WiFi connectivity. All PLAY:5 devices manufactured prior to that date will require a first wire connection to facilitate a firmware upgrade and  hereafter they will be able to work over WiFi.
Note: You cannot connect the Play:5 via both SonoNet and WiFi; you will need to choose one. Sonos recommends using its proprietary SonosNet wireless mesh network over WiFi when applicable. SonosNet will provide a more secure wireless connection with fewer interruptions for optimum performance. WiFi is subject to greater interference from other WiFi and 2.4GHz devices on your network. WiFi connectivity is not compatible with 5GHz and N routers (you will have to use SonosNet in this case).

Multi-Zone Compatibility: You can place a PLAY:5 in each zone where you want to listen to music. The Sonos Digital Music System can accept up to 32 Sonos players. With multiple zones, you can play the same or different songs in different rooms. The PLAY:5 can be combined with other Sonos components; including the Play:5 or PLAY:3 amplified wireless music players, ZP120 amplified zone player, and ZP90 zone player.

Music Streaming Services: The Sonos PLAY:5 gives you access to unlimited music; such as your iTunes library, your favorite music services, and thousands of Internet radio stations, shows, and podcasts.

  • Pre-Loaded Internet Radio: The Sonos PLAY:5 includes TuneIn, an Internet Radio Service, that provides immediate access to 100,000 Internet radio stations and broadcast programs. You can easily find radio stations from all over the world broadcasting music, news, and variety programming, including archived shows and podcasts.
  • Online Music Services: The Sonos PLAY:5 works seamlessly with 7Digital, Amazon Cloud Player, AUPEO!, DAR.fm, Hearts of Space, iHeartRadio, Murfie, Pandora, Rdio, Rhapsody, SiriusXM Internet Radio, Slacker Radio, Songza, Spotify, Stitcher, & Wolfgang's Vault, plus downloads from any service offering DRM-free tracks (service availability varies by region). Check out the Sonos website for the latest online music services. (Some online services require a paid subscription.)
  • Music Library: The PLAY:5 supports playback of music from any computer or network-attached storage (NAS) device on your home network where you have shared music folders. The PLAY:5 can play music stored on up to 16 PCs, Macs or NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices on your home network, supporting the most popular audio formats. The PLAY:5 indexes your music folders so you can view your music collection by categories (such as artists, albums, composers, genres, or tracks). The PLAY:5 supports the following audio file formats - MP3 (compressed), WMA (compressed), AAC (MPEG4), iTunes, Ogg Vorbis, Audible (format 4), Apple Lossless, FLAC (lossless), WAV (uncompressed), and AIFF (uncompressed).
  • iTunes Music: The Sonos PLAY:5 supports the playback of music and playlists managed with your iTunes account (playlists are limited to 40,000 tracks). The PLAY:5 can access your iTunes music files from your network computer or directly from your Apple iPod iOS device (4.0+) running the Sonos Controller app.

Sonos Controller: The Sonos PLAY:5 allows you to control its audio setup, playback functions, and search features through the Sonos Controller software for Windows and Mac computers, or from the Sonos Controller app for Apple iOS and Android devices. You'll have access to thousands of pre-loaded nternet radio stations, dozens of online music services, your iTunes music, and your network music library; all from one control app on your computer/laptop or smartphone/tablet.

  • Sonos Controller for Windows/Mac: The Sonos Controller software allows you to control the Sonos PLAY:5 from your computer. Simply download the Sonos Controller software from the Sonos website onto your Windows PC or Mac computer. The Sonos Controller software is compatible with Windows XP (SP3), Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Macintosh OS X (10.6 or higher) operating systems.
  • Sonos Controller for Apple iOS/Android: You can also wirelessly control the Sonos PLAY:5 from your Apple iOS device (4.0+) or Android smartphone/tablet (2.1+) running the Sonos Controller App from the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store.
Note: The Sonos PLAY:5, computer, and Apple iOS/Android device must be connected to the same home network.

Home Network Requirements: To access Internet music services, Internet radio, and any digital music stored on your computer or Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, your home network must meet the following requirements:

  • High-speed DSL/Cable modem, or fiber-to-the-home broadband connection for proper playback of Internet-based music services. If your Internet service provider only offers Satellite Internet access, you may experience playback issues due to fluctuation in download rates.
  • If your modem is not a modem/router combination and you want to take advantage of Sonos' automatic online updates, or stream music from an Internet-based music service, you must install a router in your home network. If you don't have a router, you will need to purchase and install one before setting up your system.
  • If you are going to use a Sonos controller application on an Android smartphone, iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or other tablet, you will need a wireless router in your home network.
  • Connect at least one Sonos component to your home network router using an Ethernet cable, and then you can add other Sonos components wirelessly. Or setup your Sonos component wirelessly via WiFi without any hardwire connection.
  • For best results, you should connect the computer or NAS drive that contains your personal music library collection to your home network router using an Ethernet cable.
Note: The PLAY:5 is compatible with Sonos software versions 4.0 and later. If you are adding the PLAY:5 to an existing Sonos system, be sure to check for software updates before adding the PLAY:5 to your Sonos system.

Automatic Updates: The Sonos PLAY:5 supports free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the PLAY:5 and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.

Speaker/Amp Section

Room-Filling Sound: The Sonos PLAY:5 provides crystal-clear, room-filling sound through various advanced sound technologies. The PLAY:5 incorporates an all-digital architecture design for precise sound reproduction. The Sonos PLAY:5 utilizes a five-driver bass-reflex speaker system individually powered by five dedicated digital amplifiers for room-filling sound. The PLAY:5 offers adjustable bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls for optimal sound performance.

5 Speakers/5 Amplifiers: The PLAY:5 uses five state-of the-art digital amplifiers individually coupled with the unit's five speakers to deliver superior sound to any room. The wireless music system provides crystal-clear, high-quality sound that rivals much larger, more complicated systems. The components of the PLAY:5 include:

  • 5 Class-D Amplifiers: five state-of-the-art, great sounding amplifiers that are light weight, powerful and very energy efficient in standby and use
  • Tweeters: two tweeters create a crisp and accurate high frequency response
  • Midrange Drivers: two 3.0" dedicated mid-range drivers ensure the faithful reproduction of mid-range frequencies crucial for accurate playback of vocals and instruments
  • Subwoofer: a dedicated 3.5" subwoofer driver provides deep, powerful bass you can feel

Acoustic Port: The acoustic port on the rear of the unit serves two purposes: it is vital to the sound output of the PLAY:5, and it doubles as a convenient handle when moving it from one room to another.

All-Digital Sound Architecture: From the recording studio to your home the music is reproduced as the artist intended. All filter settings, active equalization, and time-alignment are done in the digital domain through state-of-the-art DSP circuitry so there is absolutely no loss of audio quality or energy.

Controls: The PLAY:5 only has a mute button and a volume control, both mounted on the top of the unit. Between the buttons lies a Zone Player LED status indicator, which flashes white when powering up or connecting to the Sonos Digital Music System, and lights solid when powered up and connected to the music system.

Creating a Stereo Pair: For a wider stereo experience, you can combine two Play:5 units in the same room to create a pair of stereo speakers. In this configuration, one unit serves as the left channel and the other serves as the right channel. The Controller software can be used to configure the units in this manner.

Optional Wireless Subwoofer: The optional Sonos Sub is a wireless subwoofer that can be associated with the PLAY:5 to enhance the sound in the room. The set-up procedure for the Sub adjusts the crossover automatically so it seamlessly integrates with the PLAY:5. Through the Sonos Controller software, you can also set the phase and level of the subwoofer to match it to the PLAY:5's output. You must setup your Sonos system via the SonosNet wireless mesh network in order to connect the Sonos Sub (not compatible with WiFi).

Versatile Placement: You can position the Sonos Play:5 wherever you find the sound most enjoyable. Its compact size and inset handle make it easy to place the Play:5 on the kitchen counter, or carry it out to the patio with you.

Connections

Dual Ethernet Ports: There are two rear-panel female RJ-45 connectors for plugging in Category 5 Ethernet cables. You can connect a router, computer, or an additional network device, such as a network-attached storage (NAS) device. Specifications: 10/100 Mbps, auto MDI/MDIX.

Analog Input: You can connect an external source, such as a portable music player or a CD player, to the unit's rear-panel 3.5mm mini-jack port. The input jacks automatically detect a device is connected, and the source appears in the system. Music from the external source can be played in any zone. The volume is controlled by the Sonos Digital Music System, however, the playback (pause, music selection, etc.) must be controlled at the source.

Headphone Output: The Play:5 is equipped with a rear-panel 3.5mm headphone output for connecting a set of headphones. The headphone jack is auto-detecting, so when you plug-in a set of headphones, the Play:5's built-in speakers automatically mute.

Power Input: The Sonos Play:5 operates on ordinary household current using the supplied AC power adapter and cord. The Play:5 is capable of accepting 115/120 Volts AC or 230/240 Volts AC.

Sonos Play 5

Written By Skyler C., Seattle, WA on Wednesday, April 01, 2015

The ability to control music in your home with the convenience of an easy-to-use downloadable app (Android or Apple) is a luxury I have waited years for! Setup is seemless, and the sound quality on this particular unit is broad and rich.

Like most of us out there - I hope - I enjoy music in my home on a daily basis. The Sonos app and speaker(s) allow you to control all aspects of the system from your cell phone, IPAD, etc. Yes, it may promote laziness to some extent, but when you are in the middle of something and want to enjoy a specific song or album you can achieve this as easily as checking the weather on your handheld device. That translates to utmost convenience.

When I set up the Play 5 I was admittedly skeptical about the potential sound quality; both high-end and especially low-end. The unit was and still is impressive for its size regarding sound quality. It isn't going to blow the windows out of your home or apartment, but let's be honest - that is what powered subs are for.

I am already planning the next addition to my existing Sonos family of speakers/components. Maybe a Play 3 for the office? I currently have the Play 5 linked to a Sonos Connect --> perfect for those who would like to use Sonos and have a pre-existing stereo system in their home. Best thing about multiple Sonos systems in one home is the ability to group or seperate them independently of eachother and control volumes in unison, or individually.

Long story short = Try it out!

Pros: Impressive sound from a space saving, convenient, and flexible unit - did I mention great sound! Ease of setup and seemless linking with other Sonos components also stood out to me.

Cons: The Only thing I would add is an in app feature that allows users to manipulate volume controls in the background mode (vs. going into the app to control volume).

Great Sound; I like the Line-in feature

Written By csteury, Salt Lake City, Ut on Monday, March 30, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound, I already owned a Sonos-1 and Sonos-3. They sound ok, but the Sonos-5 is even better. In truth, I purchased this unit due to the "Line-In" capability as I just purchased a turntable which I wanted to plug into my existing Sonos system. Due to spatial considerations, I also wanted to place the turntable close to my computer system in order to digitize and convert Vinyl to flac, etc. In any case, all went according to plan and as a bonus the new Sonos-5 exceed expectations w.r.t sound quality!

Pros: Easy setup, great sound quality

Cons: A bit pricey, but the only system that appears to does what I want to do (which is integrate old with new media forms, etc)

It's Good

Written By Brett, Virginia on Saturday, March 21, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A little pricey, but very convenient to use. Sound is extremely good for home use - tight bass, defined mids, and non-brittle highs. Will expand the system more in time.

Excellent

Great speakers as part of a great wi-if Eco-sustem

Very Happy

Written By Beau, Coventry CT on Wednesday, February 11, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was skeptical even though I have a neighbor who swears by his Sonos 5. But I took the plunge and I am very glad I did. The setup had a few flaws but it only took about 15 minutes and not only was the 5 working great but I had downloaded SiriusXM, Pandora and some others. At first I thought that all the music services that I had already downloaded would work not realizing I had to download again into the Sonso app. No big deal. I now run the 5 in a 16x20 room with 19 foot ceilings and it sounds great. I'm going to order a second one next week to get my true stereo. No downsides to this. I only wish that I could plug my base cube in.

Pros: Simple setup great sound plenty of volume plays every music service I need plus my playlist on the ipod touch

Cons: wish I could plug in my present base cube

Happy with Sonos.

Written By MSS, California on Sunday, February 08, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very happy with both of my Sonos 5s. They have a nice low end as well as clear high end. I bought a black to go against a black wall and white for white wall so their size keeps them both fairly invisible. I have Play 1s as my speaker around the house, but use the 5s with a 25 ft. 3.5 jack as input for my TVs upstairs and downstairs. I set their level to 9 since they were both very low to begin with. I also played with the audio delay on both of my Samsung TVs so the the audio is as close as possible to the output of my TV soundbars. Each show or live event changes the delay, but it's still within reason. Very Happy! Sonos is a great system and is truly "plug and play" unlike the Samsung one I tried first. Not cheap, but not expensive compared to other good sounding systems.

Sonos Player 5 wireless speaker

Written By Ken in Texas, College Station, TX on Monday, February 02, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to set up with terrific highs and lows characteristic of Sonos. Music never sounded so good or enriched.

Pros: Small and compact speaker. Hard to believe the sound coming from its size.

Cons: No negatives at this time -- just pure music and listening pleasure.

Great sound, but limited integration

Written By TomD, Palm Springs on Wednesday, January 21, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is great-I got two Sonos Play:5s and hooked them up to be stereo. It creates good overall sound for a large room (where there aren't great acoustics) and there are no speaker wires (only electrical plugs), plus they can be moved to other rooms. The set-up was easy and everything is controlled from your smartphone (iPhone). I mostly listen to my iTunes library and Pandora, and primarily as background music. They look great in white, clean and modern.

There are only a few downsides. Sonos is an independent system, so you can't easily integrate it with other sound systems (or the TV) unless you buy one of their Connects. I got a Yamaha soundbar for the TV at the same time, wanted to integrate them all together for amazing TV sound. But buying two Sonos Play:5s and the Yamaha already tipped my budget, so adding more money for a Connect would make me rethink the whole set-up. The other downside is the spouse-it isn't easy for two people to work the system. Since it's controlled from my iPhone, if I step out of the room, he has no way to change a song or adjust the volume easily (although there are buttons on the speakers for volume). It would be better if we could control everything from the TV, so Pandora and other sources would be accessible from anyone in the room (another reason to shell out $350 for a Connect).

Not sure there was a better option for my situation, other than a TV soundbar with wireless rear speakers.

Pros: Looks great, good rich sound (especially for background music), easy to set-up, flexible to move to other spaces. Great for stand alone sound system using music apps and digital libraries.

Cons: Limited integration with other systems, not great for multiple users (unless they use their own music sources), may not be as good at high volume, not the best choice for a complete AV sound system.

Easy Setup, Flexibility

Written By CP, Wisconsin on Sunday, January 18, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second expansion to my Sonos system. I started this as part of a new home construction. Is economical and flexible than having a central control system and wiring the house. Flexibility to mix up the rooms any time is great.

Play area and the Kitchen each is set-up with an Sonos Amp. And can move the payers to combine with those as needed.

Pros: Flexibility, great sound and sleep timer

Cons: none

Sonos PLAY 5 WOW

Written By Anonymous, Ohio on Monday, January 12, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

WOW what sound, plays everything I through at it. I do however have 2 complaints, one I wish I would of bought 2 of these for stereo imaging. And the other is there are network dropouts that are hard to recover from.

Pros: The wonderful sound

Cons: Network dropouts.

EASY TO USE, ROOM FILLING SOUND

Written By TR, California on Sunday, January 11, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

THE PLAY 5 IS AN EASY TO USE, ROOM FILLING SPEAKER. I USE THIS SPEAKER IN A SINGLE SPEAKER ARRANGEMENT (CAN BE USED IN STEREO PAIRS) AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO PULLING WORIES AND INSTALLING IN-CEILING SPEAKERS. THE PLAY 5 PERFORM WELL IN THIS SETTING ALTHOUGH THE SOUND IS MORE DIRECTIONAL THAN YOU WOULD GET WITH IN-WALL OR IN-CEIING SPEAKERS.

Pros: SUPER SIMPLE SET UP. INSTANT INTEGRATION WITH MY OTHER SONOS GEAR (CONTROL AMPS)

Cons: A LITTLE PRICE. WISHED THE SOUND DISPERSION WAS A LITTLE BETTER WHEN USED IN A SINGLE SPEAKER ARRANGEMENT.

Sonos Play 5

Written By Al, Ottawa, Ohio on Sunday, January 04, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased the Play 5 to be able to have music where I am and control it remotely. To date it is working perfectly, sounds great. Easy to control from a computer on Iphone.

Pros: Wireless, Great sound.

Cons: A little pricey but worth it so far.

Simply amazing!

Written By Laurie D, the Washington, DC Area on Monday, December 29, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the Sonos system and especially love the Play 5. I bought several speakers (play 1, 3 and 5 in different rooms) for various rooms in the house and the quality and sound of the Play 5 is amazing. The depth of sound that you get with the 5 is really amazing. The ease of which the whole system is set up is amazing and my whole family loves that we can listen to music throughout the house with ease and versatility.

Pros: Quality, ease of set up

Easy setup, nice sound

Written By Paul, Minneapolis, MN on Monday, December 29, 2014

The Sonos was easy to set up and the sound from such a small device is quite good. The only drawback is that there is not an app for my Microsoft Surface Pro tablet.

Pros: Simple interface, good sound.

Cons: Does not seem to work with my Microsoft Surface Pro. I went to the store but could not find the sonos controller app.

Sonos 5 Nothing compares

Written By Doug, North Carolina on Sunday, December 28, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought one for each of my adult kids. They were not aware of Sonos (out of their price range at this point in their lives) they absolutely are blown away. The sound iincomparable..I.pulled up an Eagles song and heard it like never before. They love these things....couldn't be better...deep, rich, clear and powerful.

Pros: the ability to connect in multiples ways sets them even further apart from the rest.

Cons: absolutely nothing...

Really Good Speaker

Written By Anonymous, Florida on Sunday, December 28, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Its great sound in a small package. Connected easily enough. Occasionally disconnects from wifi during heavy wifi use. Considering getting a wifi booster.

Pros: Easy to setup. Great sound.

Cons: Only connects to phone or pc via Sonos app. Not as universal as bluetooth. And only connects via wifi. So even if you wanted to take it outside, once out of range its useless.

convenient BIG sound

Written By rsp, Princeton NJ on Tuesday, December 16, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Went with Sonos as heard great things (pun intended). We love this system! Very convenient way to get great sounding music in every room in the house. Set up and use very intuitive and easy. Way better sound without fade outs versus our prior Bluetooth. The speakers themselves are outstanding. Have both Play 5s and Play 1s - the Play 5s have a bit more lower end but frankly the Play 1s are so good you would have similar great sound just going with Play 1s and getting twice the number of speakers for the same $ outlay. Highly recommend Sonos and will be adding more shortly. Just wish they had a weather resistant outdoor model as well!

My second Play 5

Full sound, small frame

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was not sure what to expect when I took the Play 5 out of the box. It was smaller than I imagined, but after the easy set up, I was enjoying a full room of music. Surprisingly solid amount of bass generated by the speaker. All around pleased with my purchase.

Pros: Full sound. Deep bass and crisp treble. Easy setup. Small and discrete.

Phenomenal speaker ! Sylish, compact, great sounding high quality system. Very easy and intuitive to set up . The control app is perfect ! Clear graphics and stress free operation. Really like the Sonos product line. Flexible, expandable, stylish, well built and great sounding speakers.

Pros: Great sound, stylish appearance, easy to set up and operate.

Cons: None at all.

Awesome!

Written By Ed L., Virginia on Sunday, November 23, 2014

Awesome sound. Small package. Looks great. Super easy to install. SONOS is a great system. I have 5 Play:5 speakers and one Play:1 speaker. It is so nice to be able to walk from room to room and even outside and have the same (or different on each speaker) music playing in each room. The online content that is available is out of this world. I am very happy to have finally embraced the SONOS technology. The folks at Crutchfield were very helpful in answering all of my questions. Sonos play 5

Written By Steve B, Baton Rouge on Monday, October 06, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I highly recommend the play 5 over any other Sonos speaker for its sound quality. The sound is much more balanced utilizing the onboard sub and tweeter config. just sounds better than any other Sonos. Instead of going with ceiling mounted speakers i decided a few years ago to go the Sonos route for instillation simplicity. I'm very pleased with the quality, ease of operation and integration of smart phone control.

Pros: Installation, sound quality and placement options.

Cons: I'd prefer the sound quality to be a little more crisp...but not a deal breaker. A little pricy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

added to an existing multiroom SONOS system (2 PLAY:1 in kitchen and bathroom respectively) with the usual simple, no hassle, setup one has come to expect from SONOS the PLAY:5 was intended for a somewhat larger room and met all my expectations and more the PLAY:3 might have been sufficient, but I needed reserve audio power to play music at higher volume with minimum distortion the PLAY:5 delivers incredibly clear and full range audio, pure listening pleasure at a wide range of volume highly recommended - from Crutchfield - prompt and efficient order processing and shipping

Pros: excellent audio quality

Cons: not wall mountable due to size and weight (perfect for shelf)

Great Speaker System

Written By Ian H, Acton MA on Wednesday, August 13, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great addition to my newly acquired surround sound Sonos system. I wanted a speaker system that I could use to listen to music in locations away from my Surround Sound system. This is a fairly full range speaker with excellent sound, even when cranked up. The beauty of it is that it operates within the Sonos wireless network and as such only needs a power cord to operate. It mobility allows me to use it in any room of the house. It is very simple to setup and to maintain. I can play the same music or different music on this speaker sytem as that played on the surround sound system. The flexibility and ease of use of the Sonos system is terrific. The apps for the system operation could use improvement. Surprisingly the PC software is not as good as the Android and iOS software. It is possible to perform all necessary tasks, just not cleanly.

Pros: Flexibility. Portability. Sound quality and range,.Management of many music sources,

Cons: The control applications are not intuitive nor consistent among the OS specifc-implementations.

SONOS PLAYER

Written By MYRONE R., 4432209393 on Wednesday, May 28, 2014

The sound from this one speaker is phenomenal. My previous system had four speakers plus a sub woofer which sounded great, but after years of use it was time to replace this system. I didn't think that one speaker could replace my old system. I recommend this speaker to any who is upgrading their sound system to take advantage of the new technology that is available today.

Pros: One speaker, great sound.

Cons: What to do with all those old speakers?

Music everywhere

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once we got the main Sonos device for digital music this was a natural for extending the music to the rest of the house. The Play 5 has the Wi-Fi, amplifier, and speakers all built in. All you need to add is power. Sync to the main Sonos unit and you can access the music library and other sources that you set up for the Sonos. Control is via the same program or app. The system can play the same source/playlist on all devices, or the Play 5 can play its own list, separate from what's coming out of the main unit.

Our house is relatively small. We set the Play 5 in a back hallway, and the volume is enough to fill the back part of the house. The sound is quite good over the entire tonal range, for a self-contained unit anyway. Not much channel separation, as might be expected for a single enclosure. Supposedly there is a way to use two Play devices to create wireless stereo sound, but that takes away some of the point of a Play - that it's "one and done", plug in a box to AC power, sync to the main Sonos unit, and you're up and running.

My wife loves the Play. Her musical tastes are rather different from mine. This way she can listen to her music in part of the house, and I can listen to mine via the other Sonos. I suspect we'll have another Play for the second floor soon.

Pros: It's a self-contained unit that brings the music off your Sonos system to any room in the house that can pick up your Wi-Fi network. I'm tempted to try it on my back deck - if it ever gets warm enough. The sound is quite good, with surprising base for a single box, good volume overall, and surprising depth. You can synchronize the Play 5 to play what's playing on the main unit, or it can play its own playlist or source separate from what's coming out of the main unit.

Cons: Channel separation is limited, as you'd expect for speakers that have only the separation inside the unit itself. For my installation I haven't found this a large problem; when I want the full stereo effect I listen in the room with the main Sonos and the full-on stereo rig. The Play 5 is a substantial box, so it might be a challenge finding a spot for it in a room. The Play 3 might be a better choice for smaller rooms.

They pack a punch

Great full range. The bass is adequate, but it won't rattle the pictures off the walls. Given their size, they are amazing, though. Very happy with them.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love the convenience that the Sonos provides. The set up was effortless and I had no problems. After playing with it for about 20 minutes I finally discovered the menu option for "music equalization". Actually, it just allows you to adjust the treble and bass so it's a bit misleading to infer that it is an equalizer. But regardless, adjusting these controls made the sound much more to my liking. The sound is very good from such a small speaker. I was able to download the Sonos application to my MacBook Pro and my I-tunes library works seamlessly with all my controllers (Mac, iPhone and iPad). I liked the play 5 so much that I went out and bought a play 1 for my bedroom! Great products - I plan to buy more for the rest of the house!

Pros: Convenience, seamless operation, very good sound

Cons: A bit on the pricey side...

Sonos Play 5

Written By Ron Feinman, Lynchburg, VA on Tuesday, January 28, 2014

I've had a Sonos system for many years and still believe they offer the most complete wireless sound solution. The Play 5 is a key component of my system. I have one in the den at home and one in the office. I simply take a Connect 90 and a Play 5 with me when I go to the beach, where I can hook up the Play 5 and the beach house stereo to the Sonos system. I love the portability, and in the evenings will move the Play 5 to the deck for music.

The Play 5 delivers excellent musicality for a box its size and, if desired, 2 Play 5's can be connected to form a true stereo solution. Even standing alone, one Play 5 achieves a modest amount of stereo separation and I love the clarity of the sound.

Pros: Sonos network - ability to use my Spotify account, Pandora radio, playlists, iphone controller for both me and my kids, etc. portability - both from home to home and around a home very nice sound for the form factor

Cons: a little pricey, just at the edge of the value proposition . . . but what a lot of value! still tied to an electrical cord

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used to hesitate to spend too much money on a Sono Play:5 since I have many options to buy wireless speakers in this price range. After I use it for couple days, I totally love with it, and my wife too. I will buy another Sono units in the future. I am not the professional for the audio, but i believe my ears get good quality sound from this digital speaker. I believe all the aspects of Sono Play:5 is above the average. And most charming part for me is its user interface. I will say Sono will change your way to listen music as Apple's products do for us.

Pros: Good interface, Good quality of speaker and sound. And nice looking too. Simple product for people whon need a simple life. "Less is More"

Cons: Just prices...hope more promotion come in the future

Pros: Perfect as an add on to the sonos sound bar or in a room alone. I use it in a room 20x25 sound quality is excellent and no speaker wires

Cons: Oh the bad news is you will get hooked and add to your system piece by piece

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought both the Sonos play 3 and 5. The three for my den and the five for our larger living room. The five certainly has bigger sound, with the bass, but I'm not discounting the three, as it does wonderfully in a smaller space, and accompanies the five nicely when played together in separate rooms with different volume levels, to give a 'stereo' effect. Bottom line is that I greatly enjoy both the three and the five, and will add another three for the master bedroom.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great system. I purchased the play 5 for our main living area, and two play 1s for the kids' bedrooms (and to move about as needed). The speakers seem incredibly well built (nice solid, heavy feel). Set them up on Christmas Eve, for music when the family woke up in the morning. Super easy to get up and running--and way easier than putting together Santa's usual toys! It's awesome to music through the house. TV is off a lot more, and we are rediscovering our love for music.

Pros: Nice sound, easy set up, high quality packaging (and Crutchfield did an outstanding job packaging the shipment as well)

Cons: A little expensive (but not too when I think about what we spend on computers and TVs)

Sonos - Plug and play wireless system

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the system after considering in-ceiling mounts and other controller systems. This Sonos system made the most sense. The Play 5 sounds rich and clear. The bridge was easy to set up. The controllers on my iPods and iPads are a breeze. They all-in-one-place internet radio stations were a nice touch (who wants to go looking for that stuff?) Highly recommend.

Pros: Ease of use. Sound quality. Value.

Cons: Not sure if they really turn off or go into sleep mode. Reducing my carbon footprint? Doubtful.

Excellent product and service from Crutchfield. I purchased the Sonos Play:5 just before Christmas. I arrived in 3-days (appreciated the free shipping) and included a free Sonos Bridge. Set-up was incredibly easy ... 'Apple-like' intuitive set-up straight out of the box ... 3 easy steps took about 5-6 minutes in total. Thoroughly enjoying the streaming audio and the Play:5 easily serves our largest room and adjoining open-plan rooms. So satisfied I just ordered Play:1's for the office and kitchen area.

Pros: Ease of set-up, aesthetics, quality of sound.

Cons: None yet.
