Our take on the Sonos® Play:5 (S5)

by Tara W.
S5 in bedroom

All the music you want — anywhere in your home

Sonos systems let you tap into music from your personal collection and from the Internet, anywhere in your house. The compact Sonos Play:5 makes it easy to get started or add an additional room — it's a self-contained music system with built-in speakers. You'll get top-notch, room-filling sound from a player that easily fits on a counter in the kitchen or an end table in the living room. The Play:5 teams up five drivers — two tweeters, two midranges and a subwoofer — with five tailor-matched amplifiers to deliver full-bodied, lifelike sound.

Exceptionally easy multi-room music

Sonos makes setup easy

Place ZonePlayers, like the Play:5, in every room where you want to listen to music. The players connect to your home network — one player makes a wired connection, and communicates with all other players using Sonos' proprietary wireless network. This network, known for its extensive range and superior performance, gives you house-wide access to tunes stored on your PC along with a wealth of Internet audio choices. (We recommend adding the Sonos ZoneBridge for easy wireless access.)

Sonos controllers

You probably already own a Sonos controller

You can use an iPhone®, iPod touch®, iPad®, or Android™ phone to control any and all Sonos players. A free download turns your smartphone and tablet into a full-fledged Sonos controller. Easily navigate and search through playlists and tracks stored on your computer, or select an Internet radio station. Create customized playlists on the fly for individual rooms or for playback over your entire Sonos system. You can also mute or adjust the volume of each of your players.

Rhapsody®, PANDORA®, SIRIUSXM, and more at your fingertips

The Sonos system works seamlessly with a host of Internet-based digital music services, including Rhapsody, PANDORA®, Spotify, last.fm™, Napster®, and SIRIUS Internet Radio. Rhapsody offers instant access to millions of songs and ad-free radio stations through your Sonos Controller. SIRIUS Internet Radio gives you access to over 80 channels of programming. Every Sonos system includes free 30-day trials of these two services, so you can start listening the moment you take it out of the box. PANDORA® and last.fm create customized Internet radio streams just for you — all you have to do is enter the name of your favorite song or artist. And because Sonos connects directly to the Internet for all of these music services, you don't even have to turn on your PC.

Expand your Sonos system

You can have up to 32 ZonePlayers in your Sonos system, and each one can play an independent selection of individual tracks or playlists. Listen to jazz in the den while your spouse plays rock music in the kitchen, or pump a single playlist of songs throughout the entire house during a party.

The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 creates room-filling, high-performance sound using an integrated five-way speaker system driven by five built-in digital amplifiers. Wireless Technology

SonosNet 2.0 Wireless Mesh Network: The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 brings great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project. SonosNet 2.0, a proprietary wireless mesh network technology, provides superior wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensures synchronous music playback, and avoids sources of wireless interference. The transmitting range of the ZonePlayer S5's built-in wireless system is approximately 100 feet, depending upon your home's layout.

Note: Thick walls, microwave ovens, and the presence of other wireless devices can interfere with or block the wireless network signals of the Sonos Digital Music Signal. When interference occurs, you can relocate the ZonePlayer S5, change the wireless channel, or make a wired (Ethernet) connection.

Multi-Zone Compatibility: You can place a ZonePlayer S5 in each zone where you want to listen to music. The Sonos Digital Music System can accept up to 32 ZonePlayers. With multiple zones, you can play the same song in different rooms, or different songs in different rooms.

Audio Section

Room-Filling Sound: The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 provides crystal-clear, room-filling sound through various advanced sound technologies. The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 incorporates an all digital architecture design for precise sound reproduction. The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 utilizes a five -driver bass-reflex speaker system individually powered by five dedicated digital amplifiers for room-filling sound. The ZonePlayer S5 contains two tweeters, two mid-range drivers, and on bass driver for accurate tonal balance, deep bass, and crystal clear sound. The ZonePlayer S5 offers adjustable bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls for optimal sound performance.

5 Speakers Powered By 5 Dedicated Digital Amplifiers: The ZonePlayer S5 uses 5 state-of the-art digital amplifiers individually coupled with 5 speakers to deliver superior sound to any room. The wireless music system provides crystal-clear, high-quality sound that rivals much larger, more complicated systems. A subwoofer produces powerful bass while two mid-range drivers and two tweeters fill out the sound.

  • Class-D Amplifiers: state of the art, great sounding amplifiers that are light weight, powerful and very energy efficient in standby and use
  • Tweeters: two tweeters create a crisp and accurate high frequency response
  • Midrange Drivers: two 3.0" dedicated mid-range drivers ensure the faithful reproduction of mid-range frequencies crucial for accurate playback of vocals and instruments
  • Subwoofer: dedicated 3.5" subwoofer driver provides deep, powerful bass you can feel

Acoustic Port: The acoustic port on the rear of the unit serves two purposes - it's vital to the sound output of the S5 when in use and it's also a convenient handle when moving it from one room to another.

All-Digital Sound Architecture: From the recording studio to your home the music is reproduced as the artist intended. All filter settings, active equalization, and time-alignment are done in the digital domain through state-of-the-art DSP circuitry so there is absolutely no loss of audio quality or energy.

Adjustable Audio Controls: Optimize sound performance using zone-specific bass, treble, balance, and loudness controls. Adjust volume by individual zone or by groups of zones.

The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 indexes your music folders so you can view your music collection by categories (such as artists, albums, composers, genres, or tracks). The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 supports the following audio file formats - MP3 (compressed), WMA (compressed), AAC (MPEG4), iTunes, Ogg Vorbis, Audible (format 4), Apple Lossless, Flac (lossless), WAV (uncompressed), and AIFF (uncompressed).

Controllers

Wireless Control: The ZonePlayer S5 provides wireless control of your music using your iPhone or iPod touch ,and a Sonos CR200 Zone Controller (616CR200, sold separately).

  • Sonos Controller (CR200): The Sonos Zone Controllers work exclusively with the Sonos Digital Music Wireless Systems, and allows you to control all of your music and all of your zones wirelessly from the palm of your hand. The controller communicates with the nearest ZonePlayer through Sonosnet, a secure, peer-to-peer wireless mesh network, allowing you to extend the range of the controller to any room in your house, even outside. Because it communicates with the nearest ZonePlayer, rather than through one distant control point, the system avoids sources of wireless interference. The range of the Sonosnet is 50 to 100 feet, a range similar to that of an 802.11g wireless access point.
  • iPhone or iPod touch: You can also control the Sonos ZonePlayer S5 from your iPhone or iPod touch with a free application from the Apple App Store. You are able to search for songs and stations, choose the music, and control the volume. You can even get a text or a call on your iPhone and the music will keep playing.

Controls: The ZonePlayer S5 only has a mute button and a volume control, both mounted on the top of the unit. Between the buttons lies a Zone Player LED status indicator, which flashes white when powering up or connecting to the Sonos Digital Music System, and lights solid when powered up and connected to the music system.

Desktop Controller Software: The supplied setup disc contains the software for the Desktop Controller, which allows you to control the Sonos Digital Music System from your home computer. It includes easy-to-use wizards for setup and music sharing so the music folders on your hard drive can be shared across all Zone Players. You can also add Internet Radio stations and set preferences for online updates. Once the system is set up, all you need to do is choose your music, choose your zone, and press Play. The Desktop Controller is compatible with Windows XP and higher, as well as Macintosh OS X (10.4 and higher) operating systems.

Mounting Options

Versatile Placement: You can position the Sonos ZonePlayer S5 wherever you find the sound most enjoyable. Its compact size and inset handle make it easy to place the ZonePlayer S5 on the kitchen counter, or carry it out to the patio with you. For maximum performance, following these guidelines:

  • For best bass performance, locate the ZonePlayer S5 within 2-feet of a wall.
  • Place the ZonePlayer S5 across the room from where you will be listening.
  • Don't block the acoustic port when in use.
  • Place the ZonePlayer S5 at least 12-inches from a television, computer, or other monitor to avoid the possibility of picture quality interference.
  • The ZonePlayer S5 is not water-resistant; do not leave it outside during a rain store or position it near water.

Network Requirements

Hardware: In order to play the digital music files stored on your computer throughout the Sonos Digital Music System, you must meet the following hardware requirements:

  • Ethernet: You must have an Ethernet network interface connection in your computer. If you do not have one, you will need to buy and install a Network Interface Card (NIC) before setting up your system.
  • Modem: It is highly recommended that you have a DSL/cable modem, or LAN-based high-speed Internet connection. It is not designed for a dial-up system.
  • Router: If you have a cable or DSL modem connected directly to your computer, you should have a router connected between your modem and your computer to maintain your computer's security. If you don't have a router, you will need to buy and install one before setting up your system.

System Requirements: In addition to the above-described hardware, your computer must have the following:

  • Compatible Operating Systems: Windows XP and higher, Macintosh OS X (10.4 and higher)
  • CPU: 500 MHz processor or better
  • RAM: 128MB RAM minimum/256MB RAM recommended

Automatic Updates: The ZonePlayer S5 allows for free automatic software updates so you will always have the newest features and music services to enjoy. Simply register the ZonePlayer S5 and Sonos will automatically notify you when software updates are available. By simply pressing one button your system updates itself.

Connections

2-Way Ethernet Port: There are two rear-panel female RJ-45 connectors for plugging in Category 5 Ethernet cables. You can connect a router, computer, or an additional network device, such as a network-attached storage (NAS) device. Specifications: 10/100 Mbps, auto MDI/MDIX.

Analog Input: You can connect an external source, such as a portable music player or a CD player, to the unit's rear-panel 3.5mm minijack port. The input jacks automatically detect a device is connected, and the source appears in the system. Music from the external source can be played in any zone. The volume is controlled by the Sonos Digital Music System, however, the playback (pause, music selection, etc.) must be controlled at the source.

Headphone Output: The ZonePlayer S5 is equipped with a rear-panel 3.5mm headphone output for connecting a set of headphones. The headphone jack is auto-detecting, so when you plug-in a set of headphones, the ZonePlayer's built-in speakers automatically mute.

Power Input: The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 operates off AC houshold current using the supplied AC power adapter and cord. The ZonePlayer S5 is capable of accepting 115/120 Volts AC or 230/240 Volts AC.

Finally, music made easy.

Written By HKP, Connecticut on Saturday, February 04, 2012

Finally, music made easy. Plug it into your network or use with the wireless bridge and you will have quick, easy access to your online services, iTunes and/or Windows Media Player music. You can control music source, music selection, volume, and multi-room syncronization right from your smart phone or pad. With other parts you can also build it into your stero system to receive or play music.
Pros:
Easy access to content from many sources. Simple install. Use your smart phone or pad with a free app to access content or control settings.
Cons:
A bit pricy, but well worth it.

SONOS System

Written By Bill, St. Louis, MO on Friday, February 03, 2012

In the last few months we've bought a PLAY3 and a PLAY5. Our early experiences with SONOS have been great. Setup was simple, and sound quality is very good (especially on the PLAY5). There are a few small improvements to the playlist creation software that we would like to see, and it would be great if the system could somehow equalize the volume of MP3s, but those things are minor. Overall we're very happy with the whole SONOS system, and we're looking forward to adding additional rooms in the future.
Pros:
Easy setup. Good sound quality. Flexibility to control/connect rooms.
Cons:
Nothing significant.

Sonos 5 house install

Written By bo, san diego CA on Monday, January 30, 2012

Purchased 3 Sonos 5 speakers and a single 3 to set up house music system over the holidays. Installation of the Bridge, 4 speakers and an amp unit for the existing living room system took less than 20 minutes. Most of that was spent walking up and down our 2 flights of stairs to the speakers to push the connect button. Yes, I could have done this all at the computer and TAKEN the speakers to their locations afterwards but I'm slow like that.

After installing controller apps on two iphones and two ipads, we are off and running. Set up was 5 stars for sure. It allows us to have continuous (or custom) music throughout our 3 level home and on the deck whenever we want it.

The 5's work well outside but the 3 is a little weak in output for open space. Only complaint to date is some background noise on the speakers that is unidentifiable. You can only hear it in between songs, but we have not been able to pin it down and now it's all I can hear sometimes.
Pros:
Ease of install, ease of use, good sound quality in and outdoors. Wireless
Cons:
background noise

Sonos® Play:5 (S5)

Written By HH1202, Philadelphia on Monday, January 30, 2012

My wife and I are thrilled with the Sonos System and the service we received at Crutchfield. We are novices at electronics and they made the process simple for us to understand and easy to hook up. We have two of the 5 series speakers and the sound quality is excellent. As a side benefit, there is the iPod Touch which is a fun device. Very satisfied with the whole experience.

Excellent Sonos S5 (white) sound quality

Written By Jorge, Hatillo, Puerto Rico on Sunday, January 29, 2012

I recently purchased the Sonos5 with the bridge. The installation was a breeze, just connect the bridge to the router, install the program, and plug in the sonos5 to an electric outlet. Now I can listen to all the music on my computer. The most amazing thing is that I listen to radio stations from around the world. The sound quality is excellent. I can control it from my Computer, Iphone 4 and Ipad 2 . I have a Denon 3212 receiver with bose speakers, but now I only use the Sonos S5 system o listen music from different sources. I bought the airport express and now I use the airplay feature. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to just get one system to listen to all the music.
