Not just for i-Pods

Written by: Brian from Deerfield Beach, FL on September 3, 2008

The rechargeable battery sealed the deal. It makes the unit almost too portable. Not being much of a headphone freak I take this everywhere I can. Battery life at average volume is around seven hours.
The audio quality is better than I expected. Not mind-mumbing bass, but it's there, and the high end response is excellent. What they used to call transient response is incredible. The sfx function spaces it out to the extent that stereo is everywhere.
The FM tuner pulls in stations I normally only get on my home and auto systems--the ones portables can't get. There is only room for four presets.
I don't own an i-Pod, but my mp3 player sounds very good. My laptop sounds awfully good, as well.
The case issue--yes, it needs one--I solved with a DVD player case. It's a perfect fit. This is a great travel item. It weighs next to nothing. Folds up into a small package and gets out of its own way in luggage.
The apparent demise of the BB2001 subwoofer is a sort of a negative, but tweaking the bass on my mp3 player cured this, pretty much.
The remote is tiny. It is, in fact, the smallest remote I've ever seen. I had trouble with it until I realized there was a thin layer of protective plastic on it that, once removed, fixed the problem.
There's a lot to like here. Given the wide gulf in pricing on these devices, this gives you a lot of bang for your buck.

Great sound and easy to use. Rechargeable battery is a great plus. I agree with the reviewer that a travel bag would be a big plus. I would pay extra for it.

Great sound, compact. Easy to use. Only thing lacking is a travel case or bag.

The im600 is small and compact which is plus for me. I travel a lot so space is always something to consider. I like the way it folds up and their is nothing left sticking out to get broken. The sound of the im600 is really great I was shocked after I hooked it up and gave it a listening to. Very nice sound for such a small unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this little jewel for work, outdoors on boats. It doesn't sound like the Bose or most of my other stereo equipment: but it does, last at least 7 hours, keep the headphones out of my ears so I can hear the phone, pick up my Sirius plug N play from 100' and let me listen to my music rather than the lame stuff on my local radio stations. All the while giving me decent sound and plenty of volume. Now if they just made a rechargeable Sub...........

This little badboy is AWESOME!! I couldn't hardly beleive the richness of the sound coming out of such a small, stylish speaker system. The iM600 is so small and light that it is EASY to grab it and run out the door whether you carry it or put it in a bag/purse. *I love the built in battery!! It lasts really long on a full charge, mine lasts around 8 hours before it needs to be plugged in. *I also like the way that this thing is designed!! It looks AWESOME with my black Ipod video (30GB) which just plugs right in to the dock (this system also plays any audio device with the auxiliary input via a stereo mini jack). The dock and stand fold up for storage/transport and when your ready to use it, you just press the button on the front and they POP right out!! *The radio is a nice feature to have when you just want to listen to live broadcasts (I use it to listen to football games!). The FM works pretty well with the hide away antenna extended. *It also has a simple remote that hides away inside the unit when its not in use. But to me, the best feature of this speaker system is the SOUND!! *This little thing pumps out crystal clear sound with great highs and warm lows. The base is really perfect for what I listen to, it is very warm but not TOO distorting(not as much base as the BOSE or iM9 but VERY close!). I hooked my external floor sub to the unit when its in my room via the SUB OUT port & WOW! *I also use the usb connection with my computer because when you put the Ipod on the iM600 dock, it syncs with your PC. *All in all this is a GREAT setup with a lot of features, simple and elegant design, and the power to play your music loud & clear. I chose this unit over the BOSE SoundDock because the sound is just as good (little less base), it has WAY more features & ports, it is portable (BOSE has a portable one for $100 more than the regular SoundDock), and it cost about HALF of the SoundDock without sacrificing Quality.

*PS: Altec Lansing's Customer Support is awesome too!! They will help you with anything!!

This is a great portable speaker option for iPods. I really liked the sound on my son's Bose iPod speaker system, but it was only AC power. I listened to many portable systems and few had much speaker range. This AL system is a perfect balance between quality sound and portability. I have been using this iM600 for several months, mostly outdoors, and the built in Li battery actually lasts longer than the advertised 7 hours. I like the convenience of not having to fool with replacing batteries, plus while plugged into the AC both the AL speakers and iPod batteries are recharged. The only real criticism I have is that the FM reception is not strong, but that is not what I bought it for anyway.

Excellent buy. Looks sleek but the performance is outstanding. Lacks a little on bass but remember it's less than two pounds. The blue LCD display stands out perfectly on it's black background. Extremely simple to connect your Ipod and figure out the controls for those who don't refer to the owners manual.
