Making the complex elementary

How in the world does one company make amazing versatility seem almost minimalist? Ask Marantz. In one fell swoop, their AV7701 preamp/processor brings together wireless and wired entertainment sources in an elegantly simply interface, all while serving up top-notch picture and sound quality. Take a look at the front-facing picture at right, with the front panel closed. The '7701 keeps you updated on its status via its porthole display, a classic design element dead center on the front. You're not assaulted by a mass of controls and extraneous information. It just works, communicating what you need to know, in combination with an in-depth, overlaid on-screen display sent to your TV or video projector.

Many paths to effortless control

But that's only one way to keep tabs on the AV7701. Marantz has made controlling your home entertainment even more portable and simple with robust networking and Apple AirPlay compatibility. Streaming songs directly from your iPad®, iPod® or iPhone® is a matter of a few screen swipes. And, as they say on the late night ads, "but wait, there's more!" You can download free remote control apps for both Apple and Android™ devices, so you can see your system's status at a glance, reassign sources, and adjust settings, even across multiple zones.

The Marantz AV7701 home theater preamp/processor

The Marantz AV7701 can handle all of your wired sources...and wireless ones too

Ready for ultra-modern sources — or the classics

The video side of this preamp/processor is ready for most anything, with 7 HDMI inputs and 3 outputs (one is dedicated to a second zone). The AV7701 can scale any HDMI video source up to 4K output, so it's ready for the next generation of TV technology. Plus, it handles legacy composite and component video sources with ease.

On the audio side, signals are handled elegantly as well. In addition to wireless AirPlay connectivity, you get plenty of digital and analog inputs for your gear, including a dedicated USB input for your iPod, iPhone, or iPad. Balanced XLR outputs let you make pro-quality connections to compatible power amplifiers (like Marantz's power amps), plus there are unbalanced (RCA) analog outputs too. And there's a phono input for turntables with a moving-magnet cartridge. See our bullets below for the blow-by-blow details.

Audiophiles demand performance, but elegance comes standard

So by now, you probably have a pretty good idea that the Marantz AV7701 preamp/processor is a master integrator of both your wireless and wired entertainment sources. Plus, the Marantz nameplate is known far and wide as a preferred brand of discriminating audiophiles. Take a look again. Along with the superb build quality comes an aesthetic sensibility that puts clean lines and simplicity in a priority position. Preamp/Processor Advantage: Delegating the amplification duties to a separate component allows the Marantz AV7701 AV Surround Preamplifier to keep a healthy distance between noise-inducing high voltage/high current circuits and sensitive low-level circuits. This means that the radio frequency and electromagnetic interferences that are found in most AV receivers simply don't exist in a preamplifier/processor, or are reduced by several orders of magnitude. The result is less distortion and less signal degradation in general.

Note: The Marantz AV7701 AV Surround Preamplifier does not feature a built-in amplifier and requires a separate power amplifier, such as the Marantz MM7055 five-channel power amplifier (642MM7055, sold separately).

Current Feedback Topology: The Marantz AV7701 uses a high-speed current feedback amplifier circuit for its preamplifier so that audio signals from a Blu-ray Disc player and other equipment that support high-definition audio formats can be listened to with high fidelity. Current Feedback technology offers faster signal handling and extended frequency range. Current feedback circuits track rapid sonic changes more accurately and thus sound more natural. Current feedback topology insures astounding accuracy and control even under high-drive conditions.

HDAMs (Hyper-Dynamic Amplifier Modules): The AV7701 utilizes Marantz's proprietary HDAM (Hyper-Dynamic Amplifier Module) circuits for dynamic music and soundtrack reproduction. HDAMs combine the short signal path advantages of ICs (integrated circuit) and op-amps (operational amplifier) with the superior sound quality of separate circuit components. Because HDAMs are discrete designs, Marantz engineers are free to choose the parts best able to preserve the sonic details of your favorite sources.

Optimized Components: The carefully-optimized audio/video signal paths rest on separate circuit boards for maximum performance as well as isolation from interferences generated by high-speed video processing. The Marantz AV7701 is also equipped with a Hybrid PLL Jitter Reducer that is capable of reducing jitter and phase noise that negatively affect sound quality. The Hybrid PLL Jitter Reducer improves the sound localization, reproducing a natural sound field. In addition, Marantz surround preamplifier employs a high current linear power supply with an EI core power transformer for high-quality sound playback.

24-Bit, 192 kHz D/A Converters: The AV7701 uses 24-bit/192-kHz Digital-to-Analog converters for all channels. The 192kHz sampling and 24-bit word length capabilities of the DACs allows you to play high-resolution recordings and hear the increased clarity, detail and dynamic range of those recordings.

Audyssey Technology: The Marantz AV7701 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality.

    • Audyssey Automated Setup: Audyssey MultEQ XT technology adapted by this AV surround preamplifier provides the best listening environment for multiple listeners. The Auto MultEQ Setup feature of the AV7701 measures sound characteristics of your speaker system and room where the AV surround preamplifier is used and automatically optimizes settings. To do this, the Auto Setup feature measures a test tone emitted by each channel in a maximum of 8 listening positions, using the supplied microphone. The measurement results are analyzed using an original algorithm and environmental settings are made to improve the sound characteristics of your listening area. If you prefer, you can manually setup up your speaker configurations. You can select the size and presence of each speaker, the distance of each speaker from your normal listening position, the level of each speaker in your system, and the crossover frequency setting for each speaker. You can set the Audyssey MultEQ XT to one of the following modes.
      • Audyssey: This mode adjust the frequency characteristics of all speakers so as to create the best listening environment for the sound characteristics of your listening area.
      • Audyssey Bypass L/R: Optimizes frequency response of speakers, except front (left & right) speakers.
      • Flat: This mode flattens the frequency characteristics of all speakers. It is suited for playback of multi-channel music such as Dolby Digital and DTS.
      • Manual EQ: This mode independently adjusts the AV surround preamplifier's 9-band graphic equalizer (63Hz, 125Hz, 250Hz, 500Hz, 1kHz, 2kHz, 4kHz, 8kHz, 16kHz) for each of the 7 channels.
      • Off: The graphic equalizer is not use.
    • Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audyssey Dynamic EQ solves the problem of deteriorating sound quality as volume is decreased by taking into account human perception and room acoustics. Audyssey Dynamic EQ works in tandem with Audyssey MultEQ to provide well-balanced sound for every listener at any volume level.
      • Reference Level Offset: Audyssey Dynamic EQ is referenced to the standard film mix level of 85dB SPL for -20 dBFS. Due, to the lack of standard outside the film industry, the film reference level may not be appropriate when listening to other material. Audyssey Dynamic EQ Adjust provides three offsets from the film level reference (5dB, 10dB, or 15dB) that can be selected when the mix level of the content is not within the standard.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is integrated into Dynamic Volume so that as the playback volume is adjusted automatically, the perceived bass response, tonal balance, surround impression, and dialogue clarity remain the same. The amount of compression can be set to an of the following three levels - Light, Medium, or High.
    • Audyssey DSX (Dynamic Surround Expansion): Audyssey DSX is a scalable surround exposition system that adds new channels to improve the surround impression. Based on research in human hearing, Audyssey DSX add a pair of Wide channels in the front because that information is critical in the rendering of a realistic soundstage. Audyssey DSX then adds a pair of Height channels above the main front channels to reproduce the next most important acoustical and perceptual cues related to soundstage depth. In addition to creating these new channels, Audyssey DSX applies Surround Envelopment Processing to enhance the blend between the front and side/back surround channels. The result is a much more seamless and enveloping home theater experience.

Digital Signal Processing (DSP): The Marantz AV7701 is equipped with a high-resolution SHARC 32-bit Digital Signal Processor (DSP). All elements of the Surround Processor are optimized to the highest standards by the use of selected high performance and discrete components, particularly the A/D and D/A converters and the sophisticated DSP surround decoder. The AV7701 is equipped with various surround modes to reproduce a variety of surround sound effects, according to the content of the source to be played. The AV surround preamplifier features Dolby Digital and DTS-HD decoding, as well as offers Dolby Pro Logic audio processing.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V preamplifier via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the preamp must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
      • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
      • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 7 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Height Gain: Adjust the volume (Low/Mid/High) of the Front Height channels in Dolby Pro Logic IIz.
    • Stage Height/Width: Adjust the sound stage width/height (+/-10dB) when using Front Height or Front Wide speaker in Audyssey DSX.

Direct Modes: The Marantz AV7701 offers two Direct sound modes which offer high-quality sound by bypassing the preamp's DSP and video circuitry.

    • Source Direct: In this mode the 2ch audio signal is played in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Multichannel audio signal is played in its original form, without any tone processing.
    • Pure Direct: This mode is for playback in higher sound quality than in Direct mode. The display and analog video circuitry are turned off to minimize the possibility of any noise being added to the signal.

Stereo Modes: The Marantz AV7701 surround preamplifier also provides two-channel stereo and multi-channel stereo playback, as well a virtual surround from two stereo speakers.

    • 2CH Stereo: This is the mode for playing in 2-channel stereo; bass and treble can be adjusted and sound is output from the front left and right speakers, along with a connected subwoofer.
    • Multi-Channel Stereo: This mode lets you enjoy stereo sound from all speakers.
    • Virtual Speaker: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or headphones.

Dolby Headphone Mode: You can also enjoy listening to multi-channel surround sound through headphones using these Dolby HP modes - Dolby Headphone, Dolby Pro Logic Headphone, Dolby Headphone Bypass (stereo).

M-DAX: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio) and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The M-DAX function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.

HT-EQ: The tonal balance of a film soundtrack will be excessively bright and harsh when played back over audio equipment in the home. This is because film soundtracks were designed to be played back in large movie theater environments. Activating the AV surround preamplifier's HT-EQ feature when watching a film made from movie theaters corrects this and restores the correct tonal balance.

Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.

Tone Control: You can adjust the tonal quality of the sound by adjusting the AV surround preamplifier's bass and treble independently from -6 to +6 dB.

Level Adjustments: The AV7701 provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the preamp's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Volume Settings: The AV7701 offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0dB (80), -10dB (70), or -20dB (60) to limit the preamplifier's total volume output.
    • Turn-On Volume: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Marantz AV preamplifier/processor offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Balanced/Unbalanced Preamp Outputs: The AV7701 features both unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR preamp outputs. The AV7701 features Front left, Front right, Center, Surround left, Surround right, Surround Back left, Surround Back right, and two Subwoofer balanced XLR preamp outputs to connect the preamplifier/processor to an external 7-channel power amplifier, such as the Marantz MM7055. The AV7701 features Front left, Front right, Center, Surround left, Surround right, Surround Back left, Surround Back right, Height left, Height right, Wide left, Wide right, and two Subwoofer unbalanced RCA preamp outputs to connect the preamplifier/processor to an external 11-channel power amplifier. The dedicated front height and wide preamp outputs and surround back preamp outputs let you enjoy Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD, and Pro Logic IIz without reconnecting speakers.
      • Note: If you are connecting the AV7701 to a "vintage" amplifier via XLR, please make sure the pin-out configuration of the amplifier is the same as the preamplifier (Pin 1-Ground, Pin 2-Hot, Pin 3-Cold).
    • Assignable Digital Inputs: There are 2 coaxial digital inputs and 3 optical digital inputs (one on front). The inputs accept digital audio signals from a compact disc, DVD, Blu-ray, or other digital source component. There is also 1 optical digital output. Each input can be assigned to any of the different input sources except Tuner.
    • 7.1 Channel Input: The AV7701 features a 7.1 Channel input (Front left, Front right, Center, Surround left, Surround right, Surround Back left, Surround Back right and Subwoofer) for connecting a DVD Audio player, Super Audio CD multi-channel player, or other component that has a multi-channel port so you can playback the audio with 5.1 channel or 7.1 channel surround sound. If you will not be using the 7.1 channel input with a multi-channel decoder, you can use the front and left inputs as an auxiliary input.
    • Phono Input: The AV7701's phono input lets you connect to a turntable and offers the amplification that this weaker signal requires. The preamp's phono circuitry prepares the signal from the turntable for amplification, letting you enjoy your vinyl collection at full volume without tonal distortion.
    • Headphone Output: The AV surround preamplifier features a 1/4" stereo headphone jack on its front panel for connecting a pair of optional headphones. The unit's speakers will automatically be turned off when a set of headphones are connected.
    Video Features

HDMI v1.4 (7 in/3 out): With seven HDMI ver.1.4 inputs (6 rear/1 front), the AV7701 allows you to route multiple high-definition devices--like game consoles and Blu-ray players--to your TV. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable (via its three 3 HDMI outputs; two parallel and one discrete), reducing cable clutter. The two parallel HDMI outputs distribute the same video signal simultaneously to two separate displays. The discrete HDMI output allows you to play a different audio/video source in another zone. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. They support HDCP copyright protection and are compatible with 3D signals, ARC, Deep Color, xvYCC technology, Auto LipSync, and HDMI control.

Analog Video Inputs: The AV surround preamplifier features four composite video inputs (3 rear/1 front) and one composite video monitor output. There are also three component video inputs and one component video output (60MHz).

Analog-to-HDMI Conversion w/ Video Scaling (4K): The AV7701 is equipped with a flexible video switching system that converts incoming analog video signals to HDMI and scales them to a higher resolution, so only one video connection is required from the AV surround preamplifier to the TV. HDMI input video signals can also be scaled to a higher resolution. The scaled output resolution is set in the AV surround preamplifier's menu.

    • Composite Video to HDMI: Composite video signals (480i only) can be scaled to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 108p, or 4K through the preamp's HDMI output.
    • Component Video to HDMI: Component video signals (480i/480p/720p/1080i/1080p) can be scaled to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p or 4k through the preamplifier's HDMI output.
    • HDMI to HDMI: HDMI video signals (480i/480p/720p/1080i/108p/4K) can be scaled to 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4k through the preamp's HDMI output.
Note: The AV surround preamplifier's multi-zone HDMI output does not support analog-to-HDMI conversion.

3D Pass-Through: The AV7701 is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts. By connecting a 3D-compliant Blu-ray disc player and 3D-compliant TV to the AV7701, you will have a 3D home theater where you can enjoy high-definition sound and video on a level you've never experienced before.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the preamplifier through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When the AV preamplifier is in "Standby" mode and the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled, both audio/video streams from the preamplifier's HDMI input will be output to your television, via the AV preamplifier's HDMI monitor output. Once the preamplifier is turned "On", only video will pass through the monitor output to your TV and the audio is directed to the preamplifier's preouts.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
    • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Auto LipSync: This feature automatically compensates for the timing shift between the audio and video of the AV preamp. If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.

Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The AV7701 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.

I know, dumb question, but why a preamp? Does it really make that much difference? Compared to the normal A/V home surround sound entertainment centers, with watts around 130 pre channel? Let me know!!! Thanks for your time!!!

In my case, I have five (5) 300W Marantz mono-amplifiers; therefore, a pre-amplifier is a necessity. The front speakers for the system are rated 4 ohm; almost all receivers are rated for 8 ohm speakers and probably will not drive 4 ohm speakers. I'm not sure; however, I believe pre-amplifier outputs from a receiver providing signals to individual amplifiers can not have the individual channels adjusted.

It's not a dumb question, but it deserves a good answer. Preamps separate the line voltage amplification and switching of the inputs into a separate chassis with isolated power supplies. The benefit of this is that you generally get much lower noise (no audible hum) when there is no sound input, or on quiet passages in music or movies. For many applications, like home theater, truly quiet passages are rare, and therefore a receiver is likely to do the trick. The other benefit of a preamp/preamp-processor is that the amplifier section can be much beefier in a separate chassis, and so the amplification is much more robust. This again matters more in musical applications, or in home theater applications where the speakers are not very efficient (look at speaker sensitivity and anything above 89 dB is pretty good at turning amplifier watts into sound). Note that for every 3 dB drop in sensitivity, it takes twice the amplifier wattage to get the same volume from your speakers. It really depends on how much you value quality of sound output. If you're a person who really likes music, and appreciates good speakers, imaging, and balanced sound with little noise, then a preamp will do better than a receiver. Also, if your speaker sensitivity is at or below 87dB or so, you might benefit from a separate amplifier.

Tough call if you are talking about a Marantz A/V multi channel receiver. There A/V recvr at that wattage sounds very good. I went the separates route with this pre/pro and a Marantz 5 channel amp because I have always had seperates with many iterations of my A/V system over the years. I just wish Marantz made a beefier 5 channel amp with about 200 watts per channel. I have driven this amp to clipping without trying to hard and the auto protection/auto shutdown kicked in. To answer your question, I don't think you can go wrong either way with Marantz A/V gear. If you have the $'s, go for it, if not get one of their A/V receivers. I don't think Marantz ever made a bad sounding piece of gear.

All depends on what sound you are looking for , I could not get the clean sound I wanted out of the receiver , with separated components makes for changing some thing out easier . I have used a reciever for more than 10 years before I switched over . Nothing wrong with them I just wanted something I could change up now then but with reciever you get what give until you buy new one

Separates give you more flexibility to tailor your system to exactly what you want. By buying a separate preamp-processor, I am able to use the power amps I already have, and they can be upgraded separately. Since setting up my home theater 18 years ago, I've upgraded my preamp-processor three times, but I'm still using the same power amps. Arguably, the separates are built to a higher standard and should perform better, but YMMV on that.

Not a dumb question at all. My entire 7.1 system runs mono and stereo tube amps. This unit gives me all the flexibility I need. Also the XLR outputs are what I prefer for my Pro-Gear. I have had a couple 7.1 receivers RCA jack, pre-amp outputs and they just don't seem to have the drive I am looking for. If your not going to run a separate power AMP(S) then its probably not a great fit. Hope this helps.

i should have said it up scales 1080P TO 4K@60HZ. I have a Samusug 4K TV I BOUGHT IT WITH A 4K harddrive that has true 4K content. I have to play that through the TV and route that audio back to the amp via optical cable. This causes some loss beyond Surround 5.1.

it does do 4k@60 hz. I have had two firmware updates since I have had this pre-amp. I am not sure about HDMI-2 I have not been able to give it any input from my Samsung 4K Blueray player it would no accept. I chose this unit, in part for its XLR audio outputs. Hope this helps.

I am considering this preamp for my newly acquired McIntosh MC7106 power amp. I'm looking for a solution for the 6 channels that the 7106 has available, my requirements are unbalanced preamp outputs for 6 channels Dolby 5.1, Inputs including several optical and spdif digital coax. Does anyone have a better suggestion for an equally budgeted price? Or have I found a unit that is optimum

This is an excellent preamp and you won't find a HT preamp for anywhere near the price. I ended up returning mine because I was dissatisfied with the Marantz power amp. It was weak and I couldn't afford a six channel power amp. The sound quality, width of the sound stage, separation everything was excellent. Love the lighted remote control. None of these units give you a lot of optical or coax digital inputs for some reason. Not sure how many you need to read the specS carefully. Marantz offer all their user manuals on line for download. Marantz does an excellent job with digital music. THe M dax feature is great. I ended up buying a Marantz receiver because of the excellent sound quality. Don't like not being able to adjust levels on the fly but this is a minor inconvenience for the other benefits

I can find no mention of HDCD in the specs and as far as I know, no Marantz disc player has ever decoded HDCD so I would have to assume this pre/pro does not either. I own the 7701 but have not tried to get it to decode an HDCD encoded disc.

Is this unit essentially the SR7007 without the amp? Just wondering if this unit pared with a Marantz amp would be that much more of an improvement than the AV receiver alone. Thanks.

This really depends on the power of the amp and amp ratings these days can be really misleading. Do your homework. If you are doing anything less than 200 watts per channel you might not a difference. I have the 7008 and I really love it. I paired a 2 channel Rotel amp for front channel and letting receiver drive the other channels.

Thanks for the comments, but can anyone speak to the specs of the AV7701? I understand a pre-amp, just would like to know if the internal components are an upgrade from what is inside the SR7007. The info Marantz provides doesn't really give any detail. Thanks.

Don't know about the marantz amp. I have it paired with a rotel rmb-1095 5 CH x 200 watt/channel using unbalanced outputs. While the marantz pre-pro is better than rotels counterpart, I don't think you can match rotel's amp for the money. Its the best, quiet, natural sound amp I've ever owned.

I'm not familiar with the SR7007 but yes, this is a pre-amp processor so no amplification. I have this preamp processor with the marantz 125x2 amp running my front towers and the 125x5 running the rest of my 7.1 speaker setup. I switched out this from a denon all in one receiver and the sound difference was huge. Major positive difference if you can stomach the costs

Most Pre/Pro's (AVP's) can utilize most amps out there with their 'preamp outputs. Just make sure that your speakers match the impedance ( 4 6 or 8 ohms for example) to your outboard amps and you are good to go.

I've been using it with 30+ year old Crown power amps with no issue. As long as manufacturers stick to accepted input and output voltages, there should be no issue mixing pre and power amps. Maybe there are companies who do weird things with this interface, but I wouldn't consider Marantz and NAD among them. As always, if you use balanced interconnects, Marantz uses the Euro standard for the pin outs of XLR connectors, it may differ other companies.

Has anyone coupled this with an emotiva amp? Would like to go with this marantz pre/pro and partner it with the emotiva xpa=5 and (2) xpa-1 monoblocks for a HT and 2 channels listening. Thanks

Marantz rates the Pre Amp Outputs at 1.2 V for the Unbalanced and 2.4 V for the Balanced. Emotiva rates the XPA-5 with an input senitivity of 1.8 V for rated output. They don't rate them seperatly, you should be fine useing the balanced. I would ckeck with Emotiva to confirm compatibilty. Emotiva rates the XPA1 with an input senitivity of 2.4 V for rated output, you should be fine useing the balanced outputs. Just to be sure to ckeck with Emotiva. Bottom Line, it seemes every Manufacture rates outputs and inputs differently. Hope this helps. You can check input senitivity for some power amps here on CRUTCHFIELD OWNERS MANUAL PDF.

I currently have mine paired with an Emotiva XPA-5. No problems and sounds great.

I am using the AV7701 with the MM8077. It produces clean, crisp, vibrant , almost effortless sound. Never thought of coupling it with monoblocks. I have Denon POA 6600a's with a Denon DAP 5500 preamp for 2 channel listening, which I now use in concert with the Marantz system. I'm sure , as long as you use balanced xlr interconnects you will be more than happy with the results.

Does the bass management allow Separate Left and Right Subwoofer signals? Not just the same signal from both SW1 Jacks. And can you use the L&R Balances outs and the remainder channels as RCA outs?

Jim, Your question is very interesting but i am afraid question is not enough clear. Are we talking about a 2 separate subs or subs which are part of front speakers. Thank you

Jim...You can connect up to 4 subwoofers, but they can't be separately controlled. In none of the illustrations in the manual does it show a mix of balanced and unbalanced use. I use unbal, so I don't have hands on knowledge, but my guess is that it could be done. Unless your PA is a distance away, there isn't any advantage to using balanced output. Be advised that the bal. wiring is European, which means that pins 2 & 3 is switched, vs US std. This unit allows the DVD player to switch through to the TV when the the unit is pwr OFF, but depending on the sequence of turn on and turn off, it can get confused and not cut through. This is the only minus that I've found with the unit, otherwise I quite happy with it.

You can use some balanced out and some RCA. There is a toggle switch next to each zone that selects balanced or unbalanced output. I don't know about the sub left and right. They're just labeled sw1 and sw2. You can download PDF manual from crutchfield and it might say. Hope this helps.

I can't say 100% for sure on the subwoofer output. I believe SW1 and 2 will send the same signal, however there could be something I am missing. Our implementation only had one subwoofer so we're only making use of SW1. As for the question of mixing RCA and balanced outputs, you should be able to without any trouble. As far as I can tell both sets of output are live at all times, as there is no "choosing" which to use. Our setup required the use of all XLR connections, however you should be fine operating with a mix.

There are two separate jacks - one for SW1 and one for SW2. But in the Audyssey setup there is only one test tone. It does not send a separate test tone to SW1 and SW2. It does not seem to even ask do you have one or two subwoofers. Also the Audyssey setup menu, steps and microphone seem to be identical between my Marantz, my Denon and my old Onkyo. I'm not sure shopping amps would give you separate bass management, if they are all using the Auddyssey setup software. I am using a Magnepan CC5 center channel and Magnepan 1.7's for the front right and left speakers and two Energy Subwoofers. For proper imaging, the Magnepan instructions say to set up the system with the CC5 as a "small speaker", set the Subwoofer to "None" and connect the subwoofers to the front lineout channels (not the SW jacks). This set up forces the LFE channel to the large 1.7's (and attached subwoofers). You could use a similar set up if it is important to you to have separate right and left bass management. Hope that helps.
