Marantz

Our take on the Marantz CD5004

You can hear the difference
People who think all CD players sound the same should take a listen to the Marantz CD5004. It's the kind of player that will keep you listening late into the night, rediscovering every disc in your collection. It offers a hard-to-find combination of superb audio performance, understated good looks, and affordability.

Marantz sweats the small stuff
Marantz included circuitry refinements and specially selected parts straight out of their high-end Reference Series playbook. For example, high-quality capacitors are used in the audio signal path for superior transient speed and better bass response — giving lifelike energy to your music. And the CD5004's advanced Cirrus Logic digital-to-analog converters (DACS) deliver the kind of rich, detailed sound you'd normally expect to hear only from costlier players.

Music enthusiasts will love the CD5004's Audio EX mode. It mutes the digital audio outputs and turns off the display. By eliminating these potential noise sources, the CD5004 delivers pristine sound quality. Marantz also uses widely spaced, gold-plated RCA jacks that won't cramp the heavy-duty connectors found on high-quality cables.

Highlights:

  • plays CDs, CD-Rs & CD-RWs, and MP3 & WMA CDs
  • 192kHz/24-bit Cirrus Logic CS4392 digital-to-analog converters for exceptional sound quality
  • ELNA Silmic and Cerafine audio-grade capacitors used in signal path for faster transients and better bass response
  • Marantz HDAM® (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module)-SA2 used in analog circuitry for faster signal transfer and better transient response
  • aluminum/fiberglass front panel for vibration resistance
  • Audio EX mode eliminates potential noise sources for cleaner sound
  • variable pitch control allows music CD playback at different speeds
  • remote
  • Toslink optical and RCA coaxial digital output
  • gold-plated RCA analog output jacks
  • headphone jack with front-panel level control
  • remote control input/output (for use with Marantz receivers and amps with a compatible remote control in/out jack)

Features

Aluminum Front Panel: The unit's front-panel combines the structural advantages of extruded aluminum with the resonance absorption characteristics of glass-reinforced resin.

Disc Compatibility: The Marantz CD5004 Single Disc CD Player can play CD, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

CD-TEXT: The Marantz CD5004 supports CD-Text information such as artist name and track titles. The CDs used must also support CD-Text for this feature to work.

MP3/WMA Playback: The CD5004 supports MP3 (32-320 kbps) and WMA (64-160 kbps) audio files that have been recorded onto CD-R or CD-RW discs in ISO9660 mode 1 or mode 2 disc format. The Marantz CD player will recognize up to 255 files and 255 folders on a single disc. The unit will also display MP3/WMA tag data information.

CS4392 High-Performance D/A Converter: The CD5004 uses a Super-Audio CD grade 192kHz/24-bit Cirrus Logic CS4392 D/A converter to provide exceptional sound quality. This high-performance D/A converter is capable of handling high definition audio data streams (DSD and 24-bit/192 kHz PCM signals).

High Performance Audio Grade Capacitors: ELNA Silmic & Cerafine series high-quality film capacitors are used in the audio signal path for superior transient speed and better bass response.

CD Playback Technology: During CD play, the PCM signals recorded on the disc are oversampled to 128fs inside the D/A converter and then processed by a combination of the dynamic element matching (DEM) and multi-element switched capacitors to achieve playback characterized by a high linearity.

HDAM-SA2 (High Definition Amplifier Module): The CD5004 utilizes Marantz's Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module, or HDAM, at critical analog circuit junctions to insure smooth and ultra-fast signal transfer from one stage to another. Marantz uses HDAMs instead of standard op-amps, to render a more dynamic sound with less susceptibility to radiated noise, heat, and vibration. The unit uses an HDAM-SA2 for high-speed and high-quality sound.

20 Track Music Calendar: A linear music calendar appears at the bottom of the display, and lights up with the number of tracks on the currently selected disc, up to 20. An "arrow" icon indicates the presence of 21 or more tracks. After a track has been played, the number for that track disappears from the calendar display. In addition, the tracks selected during Program Play appear in the music calendar display, and disappear after they are played.

Note: This Music Calendar is only available when playing back Audio CDs.

Auto Standby: With Auto Standby On, you can automatically set this unit to standby mode after the CD player is in stop-mode (no operation) continuously for approximately 30 minutes.

Controls

Display On/Off Function:  The CD5004 features a Dot Matrix FL display . The "Display Off" function enables the main unit display to be turned of. By turning off this display, the pulsive noise generated from the display is reduced, thus eliminating its effects on the music signals.

Pitch Control: The "Pitch Control" functions enables the play speed (pitch) to be varied over a +/-12 step. This feature is particularly useful for musical instrument practice sessions. This function is only possible when playing back audio CDs only.

Audio EX Function: The Audio EX mode is provided in order for you to enjoy  high quality sound based on how you have connected the CD5004 to your amplifier. Audio EX bypasses the pitch control, mutes the digital output, and shuts the FL display off completely. With those three potential noise sources eliminated, you'll be able to hear everything just as the artists intended. There are three settings - Off (digital signal is only output when the pitch control setting is 0), EX 1 (offers better overall sound), EX 2 (offers best sound from analog outputs).

Quick Replay Function: By a single-action operation, the "Quick Replay" function enables play to be moved back from the current play position to the time equivalent to the setting (range of 5 to 60 seconds) and play to be resumed. This function makes it possible to return to a part of the track that was just played so it can be heard again.

Note: This functions is only possible when playing audio CDs.

Playback Options: The CD5004 provides the following options for disc playback:

  • Audio CDs:
    • Peak Search: This feature allows you to search for the loudest passage on the disc.
    • Direct Search: Directly enter the track number on the remote control to play the desired track.
    • Track Skip: Skip to the next or previous track or the beginning of the current track.
    • Forward/Reverse Search: For searching for a particular part of the current track, you can search forward or backward.
    • Repeat Play: You can repeat playback of one track, the entire disc, or specific portions of a track (A-B repeat).

    • Program Play: You can arrange and play tracks on a disc in a specific sequence. Up to 30 tracks can be programmed. As you are selecting tracks, the display will show the number of tracks in the program, and the total playing time of the programmed tracks. During program play, you can repeat the entire list of programmed tracks, or play them in random order.

    • Quick Replay: The Quick Replay feature immediately returns to the position 6-50 seconds before the current playback position and restarts playback from there
  • MP3/WMA Files:
    • Playback Mode: You can select from two playback modes - Continuous Mode (all playable files on the disc will be played) or Folder Mode (all playable files in a selected folder will be played)

This cd player is quite a bargain. It sounds like a much more expensive cd player. The sound is very detailed and accurate. I have really enjoyed listening to it. You can't go wrong with this product.

I decided to give this unit a try after an annoying experience while using my DVD player to play cd's-all I can say is, if you can't hear a difference between the Marantz and a cheap player something is definitely wrong! The clarity and depth of the music is incredible. Harvey Mason's drums ( Fourplay) were killer-Larry Carlton's ES-335 sounded sweeter than EVER-I could go on---new Drive By Truckers disc was amazing-every instrument and vocal was crystal clear--I could not stop listening---my receiver is a Denon AVR 3808-Cambridge Tower II speakers and Def Tech subs-bottom line-this is the best player I have ever heard (I admit I haven't heard the very high end units but I dunno how it could be any better!) As usual Crutchfield was awesome-got a great deal on an open box unit. Extremely satisfied with my purchase (and as a musician, sound tech and home studio engineer I'm pretty picky)

I've had many CD players since the beginning. From small and expensive, larger and cheaper, multi-disc player, car, boombox, portable, etc. The sound from this unit is beyond anything I thought a CD could achieve. Depth, deep bass, brilliant detail, presence, lively. Controls are a dream, remote is super handy. I play through classic JBL 100's that have never ever sounded better, even with their age. So glad I splurged on this one.

What a difference!

OK, I'm cheap. But I think I have a decent ear for quality music. I have been listening to CDs through DVD and Blu-ray players (Toshiba 3109 and Sony BDP-350) for the last 15 years. But I got inspired when I dusted off the old Toshiba and played some of my CDs through it again. Hmmm. It sounds better than the Sony BDP. The player DOES make a difference!

I tried a few 1990s vintange CD players (JVC and Philips) and did some research. I found that I could tell the difference in the 'sound stage' for my favorite tracks on some players. And the research led me here to the Marantz.

Honestly, after I ordered the CD5004, I had a bit of buyers remorse. How could it be worth $350? I paid less for my amp (Yamaha RX-V365) and used speakers (JBL P20s). But I figured my wife wanted to get me a nice birthday present.

So I unboxed the Marantz, and hooked it up to the analog in jacks of my amp and set it to 'Direct' (no digital processing). I sat my wife down and put Mary Black (No Frontiers) on. We 'felt' the difference. I have never heard the dynamics and presence of 'I Dream of Columbus' like this before. Then we tried Norah Jones. Same jaw-dropping experience.

Of course other 'lesser' CDs are not as noticeable of a difference, but I'm sold. I'm not sending it back. I just need to upgrade my amp and speakers now. This could get expensive!

Thanks Marantz for giving me back the joy of music!

What an absolutely fabulous value this is. After reading a review in Stereophile, I had to try this machine in my den. I couldn't be happier. The sound is smooth, the soundstage is clear and defined. I thought I'd have to spend 4 times as much to get this kind of quality. No need for an outboard DAC with this one. Don't hesitate if you want an affordable CD player that really does what it's supposed to!

Picked this up for my office system and I love it. I purchased this after I have had such a great experiance with my Marantz SACD player in my main system. For standard CD playback, this sounds just as good as my SACD player. Great warm tone, detailed and great imaging. If you don't want to spend a fortune on a CD player and can give up SACD, this is the machine to beat.

Superb product. Right out of the box it was bass heavy, then a little bit on the high side. But after a short break in period, it has settled in to a very rich sound. Using a CD of Steely Dan, & dialing up FM, the stereo imaging was outstanding. Bass was tight, mids clear with highs impeccible. Moving into a U2 CD, the bass tickled my feet. You can really feel the music. This CD player replaced an old Sony that was used mostly on pro sound & found it's way to my main stereo system. Yes, you can hear the difference. Highly recommended.

I've played with this unit enough to know it out performs the two I've been using by a long shot. The sound is full bodied, stable, and evenly presented with no sense of harshness. Steve Winwood's piano literally sounds as big as my room on Traffic's "Low Spark" cd. I know it's an entry level player, but so far performance wise I can see no reason to look further. I was skeptical about buying any manufactures bargain player, but with what I've heard so far, combined with Crutchfield's satisfaction policy, it seems like a no brainer. Excellent sound, a plethora of features, and the entry level price adds up to great value for me.

A get good source to your system

Written By another music fan, Nevada on Thursday, February 09, 2012

This CD player has a very nice sound if some early CD players sounded this good people would likely be saying good bye vinyl only missing the giant album cover art. So good CDs sound great on it. Bad cds from bad production, engineering and horrible mastering extreme compression nothing is going to help those albums ie Death Magnetic,Californication etc Anyways the good things about this is it is dead quiet not that I would be able to hear the disc spinning when listening to speakers. But I've never had a piece of equipment with spinning discs be dead silent it makes me assume a high build quality. The CD tray comes out smooth goes in smooth CD loads quick. The CD tray is thick so it real easy to put your discs in unlike DVD players these days of thin trays that you put a disc in and you wonder if the tray will snap off. Using the remote you can skip tracks easily punchy the track title to any number and the song instantly comes on. The remote is extremely responsive unlike a lot of remotes seem to not be Comparing this player to a 1991 era Yamaha CDP the Marantz sound is thicker, more alive, better dynamics, stronger more defined and detailed bass, micro details come out, more clarity in the highs, vocals jump out,and a far more detailed midrange. Comparing to a DVD player I'm thankful CD players are still made by quality companies because the sound on those are a pain I've played about 200 albums so far on it no problems. I think it will last
Pros:
Build quality seems really good.Sound is very good
Cons:
None really.
