It's the kind of player that will keep you listening late into the night, rediscovering every disc in your collection. Marantz sweats the small stuff
Marantz included circuitry refinements and specially selected parts straight out of their high-end Reference Series playbook. For example, high-quality capacitors are used in the audio signal path for superior transient speed and better bass response — giving lifelike energy to your music. And the CD5004's advanced Cirrus Logic digital-to-analog converters (DACS) deliver the kind of rich, detailed sound you'd normally expect to hear only from costlier players.

Music enthusiasts will love the CD5004's Audio EX mode. It mutes the digital audio outputs and turns off the display. By eliminating these potential noise sources, the CD5004 delivers pristine sound quality. Marantz also uses widely spaced, gold-plated RCA jacks that won't cramp the heavy-duty connectors found on high-quality cables.

Features

Aluminum Front Panel: The unit's front-panel combines the structural advantages of extruded aluminum with the resonance absorption characteristics of glass-reinforced resin.

Disc Compatibility: The Marantz CD5004 Single Disc CD Player can play CD, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

CD-TEXT: The Marantz CD5004 supports CD-Text information such as artist name and track titles. The CDs used must also support CD-Text for this feature to work.

MP3/WMA Playback: The CD5004 supports MP3 (32-320 kbps) and WMA (64-160 kbps) audio files that have been recorded onto CD-R or CD-RW discs in ISO9660 mode 1 or mode 2 disc format. The Marantz CD player will recognize up to 255 files and 255 folders on a single disc. The unit will also display MP3/WMA tag data information.

CS4392 High-Performance D/A Converter: The CD5004 uses a Super-Audio CD grade 192kHz/24-bit Cirrus Logic CS4392 D/A converter to provide exceptional sound quality. This high-performance D/A converter is capable of handling high definition audio data streams (DSD and 24-bit/192 kHz PCM signals).

High Performance Audio Grade Capacitors: ELNA Silmic & Cerafine series high-quality film capacitors are used in the audio signal path for superior transient speed and better bass response.

CD Playback Technology: During CD play, the PCM signals recorded on the disc are oversampled to 128fs inside the D/A converter and then processed by a combination of the dynamic element matching (DEM) and multi-element switched capacitors to achieve playback characterized by a high linearity.

HDAM-SA2 (High Definition Amplifier Module): The CD5004 utilizes Marantz's Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module, or HDAM, at critical analog circuit junctions to insure smooth and ultra-fast signal transfer from one stage to another. Marantz uses HDAMs instead of standard op-amps, to render a more dynamic sound with less susceptibility to radiated noise, heat, and vibration. The unit uses an HDAM-SA2 for high-speed and high-quality sound.

20 Track Music Calendar: A linear music calendar appears at the bottom of the display, and lights up with the number of tracks on the currently selected disc, up to 20. An "arrow" icon indicates the presence of 21 or more tracks. After a track has been played, the number for that track disappears from the calendar display. In addition, the tracks selected during Program Play appear in the music calendar display, and disappear after they are played.

Note: This Music Calendar is only available when playing back Audio CDs.

Auto Standby: With Auto Standby On, you can automatically set this unit to standby mode after the CD player is in stop-mode (no operation) continuously for approximately 30 minutes.

Controls

Display On/Off Function:  The CD5004 features a Dot Matrix FL display . The "Display Off" function enables the main unit display to be turned of. By turning off this display, the pulsive noise generated from the display is reduced, thus eliminating its effects on the music signals.

Pitch Control: The "Pitch Control" functions enables the play speed (pitch) to be varied over a +/-12 step. This feature is particularly useful for musical instrument practice sessions. This function is only possible when playing back audio CDs only.

Audio EX Function: The Audio EX mode is provided in order for you to enjoy  high quality sound based on how you have connected the CD5004 to your amplifier. Audio EX bypasses the pitch control, mutes the digital output, and shuts the FL display off completely. With those three potential noise sources eliminated, you'll be able to hear everything just as the artists intended. There are three settings - Off (digital signal is only output when the pitch control setting is 0), EX 1 (offers better overall sound), EX 2 (offers best sound from analog outputs).

Quick Replay Function: By a single-action operation, the "Quick Replay" function enables play to be moved back from the current play position to the time equivalent to the setting (range of 5 to 60 seconds) and play to be resumed. This function makes it possible to return to a part of the track that was just played so it can be heard again.

Note: This functions is only possible when playing audio CDs.

Playback Options: The CD5004 provides the following options for disc playback:

  • Audio CDs:
    • Peak Search: This feature allows you to search for the loudest passage on the disc.
    • Direct Search: Directly enter the track number on the remote control to play the desired track.

Q
I am looking for a high-quality CD player with a good headphone amplifier to use standalone with my Sony and Sennheiser headphones. How does this player sound when used this way?

Hi Pete, I'm sorry, but I haven't used the headphone jack on the CD player much at all. It works, and sounds great, but I have not done any extensive listening through headphones. As a component in my system, I couldn't be happier with the player, and would certainly recommend it for similar applications.

I use the CD5004 to listen to my Sennheiser HD598 headphones and find the results to be quite satisfactory. The headphone volume control on the player is a nice feature.

I don't listened through headphones
patrick j  Jun 13, 2014

Unfortunately, I am not using this CD player with headphones so I cannot comment on the quality of that amplifier. I can say that the overall fidelity and musicality of this unit is very, very good and it is able to integrate quite well with other high quality components (separate pre-amps, power amps and expensive speakers). It is an incredible bargain considering the quality audio it produces.

i've been very happy with this cd player, which i purchased simply for use in our kitchen through a set of small book shelf powered speakers, i chose this unit because it has a nice display which allowed me to find certain passsages in music which we rehearsed for the concert band we perform with. another option might be a cd player designed for DJ use.....they tend to have more versatility, but are not as attractive on a shelf. i've never used the cd player through a head phone amp, but the quality of the output is superb, so i can imagine you'd be satisfied. i've purchased through crutchfield over many years,,,,,and the return policy always makes me feel risk free,,,,,if a product doesn't work out. jeff L

I really liked the ability to listen with headphones, and have volume control. The sound was great--when the player recognized the disc. It recognized less than a quarter of the discs (all commercially-recorded) that I tried. I returned the machine and noticed when I packaged it that the thing had sustained enough of a blow in shipping to damages the inner carton. This is probably what caused my problems.
richard s  Jun 12, 2014

Sorry, but I use mine joined to a receiver/amplifier and have no idea about how well headphones are handled by the player. I am quite happy with the player as used in my setup.

Q
Does the unit have two speakers?

A
William, this unit is not equipped with speakers. If, however, you are looking for a component CD player that will make a big improvement in your sound, this is the one. I bought it because Stereophile magazine listed it as a Class C recommended component. It replaced a 15 year old Sony player that was highly regarded at the time of purchase. My wife and I are amazed at the improvement in sound.

It is player and I connected them to an amplifier with 2 speakers. I am watching the one unit which sometimes doe not read disc right away. my daughter reported that she needs to rsest 2-3 times before it will play.
gregorio  Jan 20, 2014

Sorry there are no speakers in this model that I am aware of. You need to also supply a preamp, amp and speakers unless you limit your listening via a set of headphones. Sound quality is excellent.

I bought this Marantz CD5004 from Crutchfield as an Outlet Special (I believe it was a "Scratch & Dent") on 02/15/13. It proved to be defective and I returned it for credit on 03/04/13.

The Marantz CD5004 unit is a stand alone CD player with no speakers. It has a headphone outlet but no other amplification thus you would need a receiver or something similar to go with a set of speakers.

Hello... This unit does not come with speakers if that is what you are asking...not sure if that is what you are getting at Thanks Joe
joe  Jan 17, 2014
A
No, the unit does not have speakers. It is a CD player (transport and electronics only) meant to be connected to a preamplifier/amplifier system, or an integrated amplifier, to which normal stereo speakers are connected. It's a great CD player and I highly recommend it.
michael p  Jan 17, 2014

The unit is made to be connected to a receiver or amplifier. Mine is connected to a receiver which in turn is connected to two speakers.
martin  Jan 17, 2014
A
No it does not have speakers. It is strictly a CD player and needs to be connected via cables to an amp or receiver with speakers. I am very pleased with its performance. Rob
