About the Marantz HD-AMP1

Dave Bar

Famous Marantz sound in a space-saving package

Folks around here at Crutchfield really go for the warm, detailed sound of Marantz amps, and so do our customers — just check out all the glowing reviews. But a full-size Marantz amp may not always be right for every room.  If your system is going in a bedroom, den, dorm room, or home office something a bit smaller like the Marantz HD-AMP1 could sure come in handy. This compact integrated amp delivers the powerful, dynamic punch that Marantz amps are famous for, but in a more space-saving size.

A versatile high-res champ

Just because it's small, don't think the HD-AMP1 is short on features. With its built-in, high-resolution digital-to-analog converter and array of both digital and analog inputs, this amp is ready to play from a wide variety of sources such as network music streamers, disc players, a TV, or a computer. Plus, a convenient front-panel USB port makes it easy to plug in an iPod®, iPhone®, or a thumb drive loaded with music.

Connect your computer via the HD-AMP1's rear-panel USB input and enjoy your entire library of digital tunes through your favorite speakers. If you're into downloading high-resolution audio from websites like HDtracks, 2L, or Blue Coast Records, you'll love this amp. Not only can it make your MP3 and CD-quality music sound fantastic, but it also decodes high-res audio files up to 32-bit/384kHz resolution, so you can enjoy better-than-CD audio quality. (Free USB driver download required for Windows® PC playback.) And this Marantz supports 2.8MHz, 5.6MHz, and 11.2MHz DSD digital audio signals for bit-transparent playback of those high-res digital music files.

A Marantz first

Once it sinks its teeth into your music, the HD-AMP1 knows just how to deliver warm, dynamic sound to your speakers. The conservative 35-watt stereo power rating only tells part of this amp's story. Power is generated by a wide-bandwidth, audiophile Class D amplifier — a first-ever for a Marantz component amplifier — and voiced by Ken Ishiwata, Marantz's renowned design guru. This efficient, cool-running design allows the amp to handle the heavy demands of 4-ohm speakers as well as dynamic peaks in music without breaking a sweat. The output stage utilizes current feedback circuitry — first developed by Marantz — to ensure clean playback with minimal distortion while driving both easy and difficult loads. So when that muted trumpet solo is suddenly augmented with the full power of the entire horn section, the HD-AMP1 can handle that sudden jolt of brass cleanly in all its dynamic glory.

Advanced Class D Amplifier: The Marantz HD-AMP1 integrated amplifier features cool-running, wide bandwidth and wide dynamic range Class D audiophile amplifier technology. The advanced Class D digital power amplifier stage features the latest technologies to deliver wide frequency response (to 50 kHz), wide dynamic range and lowest distortion. Rated at 35 watts per channel into 8 ohms, the HD-AMP1 is fully capable of driving lower impedance speakers and is rated at 70 watts per channel into 4 ohms+, providing compatibility with a widest range of speakers.

Current Feedback Design: First introduced in legendary Marantz tube amplifiers more than 55 years ago, Current Feedback technology provides natural warmth and musicality compared to the standard negative feedback method, helping the HD-AMP1 deliver the utmost audio fidelity for the most enjoyable listening experience.

Marantz HDAM-SA2 Technology: Marantz's exclusive Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module technology was first introduced on their widely acclaimed CD players more than 30 years ago, and today remains a Marantz signature hallmark. Instead of using conventional IC chip op-amps, HDAM technology features precision discrete component circuit blocks that deliver wide frequency response, ultra-fast slew rate and lowest distortion. The HD-AMP1 features HDAM-SA2 in three circuit blocks - including the analog front end and the D/A converter section, as well as the dedicated headphone amp block.

Q
How well would this amp pair with B&W 707 S2 bookshelf speakers? Is 35 watts per channel sufficient to drive these speakers to good effect? Setup would be in a relatively small room.
mike  Feb 07, 2019
6 answers
A
35 watts isn't even close to enough to get the best out of those 707S2 speakers..Yea, you will get sound, but you won't be close to reaching their potential. I would be pumping 100 watts of stereo power- not integrated into the speakers- the 700 series deserve that respect.
jimmy  Jun 13, 2019
A
You should be happy with this amplifier. In my 15'x17' room, KEF 300 speakers powered by this amp are super loud.
robert a  Feb 12, 2019
A
This is all speculation but it would probably pair pretty nicely. If you do a bit of digging, when the unit was first being paraded at shows, Marantz paired the unit with B&W CM1 v2's and also even larger floorstanding models.

Hi Mike, I am also driving bookshelf speakers off the Marantz HD-Amp1. The sound is crystal clear and no need to crank up the volume. In my opinion, 35 watts per channel is more than enough. I love this amp and it is built like a rock. Marantz does a great job with the on-board DAC and with your speakers you will be fine. Just keep in mind that you have two channels so if you want to upgrade you might be better with another one. Hope this helps. All the best, Chris
christopher  Feb 08, 2019
A
The Marantz HD-AMP will sound great with your B&W 707 S2 in a small room. The amp is crystal clear when connected with an optical cable with wifi. The design and craftsmanship of the amp is beautiful. Since your speakers have a sensitivity of 84 db with extended highs they would not be good in a very large room with loud music. Your speakers will sound better with a small subwoofer in a small room with this amp since there are no bass & treble controls with this amp. The amp sounds great with a "you are there" sound in a large room with horn speakers like Klipsch.
james  Feb 08, 2019
A
Those speakers are low sensitivity. Using the rule of thumb that you get 3 dB every time you double power, your speakers would make roughly 100 dB. That is like the following: a Jet take-off (at 305 meters), use of outboard motor, power lawn mower, motorcycle, farm tractor, jackhammer, garbage truck. Boeing 707 or DC-8 aircraft at one nautical mile (6080 ft) before landing (106 dB); jet flyover at 1000 feet (103 dB); Bell J-2A helicopter at 100 ft (100 dB).

Q
I'm a little wary about only 35 watts, how does it drive speakers? Do you have to crank it past half way? I currently own a Yamaha 100 wpc stereo receiver and worry ill lose volume.

A
honestly. unless you are using this in a very small room, i wouldn't mess with any amp that is less than 75 watts. it's not worth it. But also depends on your speakers as well.
jimmy  Jun 13, 2019
A
Depends upon the efficiency of the speakers. This amp powers the KEF 300's I have very well since they are very efficient.

I have the Marantz hd-1 amp hooked up to a pair of Elac uni-fi b5 speakers(4 ohms). The amp has plenty of power and it sounds great. I listen at about 1/3 volume and it is loud.

I own a pair of Sonus Faber Chameleon B bookshelf speakers, 4 ohm, 87 db and the Marantz HD Amp 1 drives them perfectly. This amp puts out 70 watts into 4 ohms.

This amp/dac is just amazing hooked up to my pc. My speakers are 8 ohms. It plays them with plenty of power. You will have twice the wattage going to 4 ohm speakers. I am sure you will love it. The dac is what makes it great sounding in my opinion. I play nothing but flac music recordings and there is no hiss or noise. Hi def movies sound great too.

Mini Maggies!!! Those rock! I had some big Maggies and loved the sound! Of course I had a big a--- amp to drive them. For the mini mags, the 7050 will do an awesome job. The 50 watt rating seems conservative, and the THD is so low as to be undetectable. I say GO FOR IT!!!

Q
When you enable "source direct" mode does it disable the subwoofer output?
sealy  Jul 20, 2017
1 answer
A
No, the Source Direct feature simply bypasses the amp's tonal control for more "pure" sound quality; but the subwoofer output remains active when Source Direct is used. For more details or to discuss further, please feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (888.955.6000) or online chat. I hope that helps!

Hello Brian, I have my samsung smart tv hooked up to it via an optical input for better sound. i also use usb thumb drives to play wav files. the sound is terrific with my revel concerta2 speakers for both music and movies. However, I have not used it to play games or other devices. I would think that as long as your devices have an optical or coaxial output you should be able to get good sound from them providing you have decent speakers hooked up. The amp seems to have plenty of power and detailed, dynamic sound.
eileen d.  Feb 19, 2017
A
No. This unit is designed for fine music reproduction only. It can accommodate both digital and analog sources.

Q
Does the AMP1 come with the same or better headphone amp as thr DAC1? Hard to find any information on this.
patrick  Mar 17, 2016
1 answer
A
I see that both the Marantz HD-AMP1 and HD-DAC1 employ Marantz's exclusive HDAM-SA2 technology and both have three gain settings available in order to provide optimum matching with the widest range of headphone impedances. So both headphone amps should perform very similarly, but there's no information to confirm that they are the exact same in each. I hope that helps.
