Our take on the Marantz M-CR610

by David Brown
Marantz

The sound solution for the less-is-more movement

On one hand, you want something that sounds much better than an iPod® or Bluetooth® speaker. On the other hand, you want something less complex than a surround sound system. You'll find your sweet spot in a stereo receiver. In addition to being easy to set up and use, many now offer Internet radio and other network music options. Add your music source and two speakers, and you're ready to relax and enjoy your tunes. You might even connect your TV for improved sound with movies and shows.

A world of music in any room

Looking for a stereo receiver with more on-board music options than just the AM and FM radio bands? Then check out the Marantz M-CR610. Sure, the AM/FM tuner is there. But there's also a built-in CD player, wireless network capability, and Apple AirPlay, extending your listening choices far beyond local radio stations. It's all underneath the hood of a compact chassis — perfect for a bedroom, office, dorm room, or den, where you may not have room for separate components.

High-res audio

With built-in Wi-Fi, the M-CR610 is ready to wirelessly stream music even if your router isn't within reach. Play music from networked computers, online music services like Pandora® and Spotify®, or free Internet radio stations from around the world. This receiver also has Apple AirPlay, making it a snap to stream songs from your iPhone®, iPad®, or iTunes® on your Mac® or PC. Or if you'd prefer the simple convenience of CDs, just pop one into this unit's built-in player. That's a whole lot of music choices built into a single compact component that can make your speakers sing with legendary Marantz sound.

Connections for other disc players, TVs, USB storage drives, and your iPod®

You don't have to listen to music wirelessly with the M-CR610. There are inputs for analog and digital sources, so you can connect a separate disc player or even hook up your TV to bypass its tiny speakers and actually hear movies and shows. Front- and rear-panel USB ports are perfect for mass storage devices loaded up with digital music files. Or plug your iPod or iPhone into the front port for digital playback using this receiver's high-quality digital decoding. There's also a preamp output for a powered subwoofer, in case you need to augment the bass response of your bookshelf speakers.

    Quality Receiver

Written By Gus, Cascade, ID on Wednesday, August 20, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a shelf stereo system just for music and college ball games. I hadn't bought a stereo for 40 years as everything I got was for AV. All of the bookshelf systems I researched seemed to fall short in the reviews or capabilities. I liked the Marantz name, reviews, and the wifi with internet radio so I could listen to AM so I ordered this receiver along with Infinity P163 speakers. I am very pleased. The sound is crisp and clear with clean highs and lows and the volume easily fills my 24 x32 garage. I did add a subwoofer, but keep it at low levels just to enhance the base. The internet radio is really useful. I am still exploring the channels, but the ones I have been using are much clearer than over the air. I listen to an XM receiver attached to the analog input and the sound is fine. It would be better using the internet version but I haven't added that to my subscription. Overall I am very satisfied. I did buy the open box discounted version, but I could see no damages or reduced quality.
    Pros:
Very good sound and input selections.
    Cons:
The price is a little steep, but as the saying goes "you get what you pay for".

    Really Nice

Written By Bill, Vermont on Thursday, January 30, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Marantz CR-610 is a very nice unit and compact which is what I needed for the small space I have. Setting up the unit initially and finding my network was flawless. I was able to download and install the android and iphone app for controlling the unit. The iphone app is a bit buggy and sometimes crashes. Overall the apps do a nice job allowing me to stream music from a variety of sources. I wish they had all the functionality build in available in the standard remote control that comes with the unit. There is no way to control the speaker balance or fade from the app. Really stupid, but maybe they will enhance the apps in the future. The sound is excellent. I have the unit hooked up to my new Polk speakers and I couldn't be happier.
    Pros:
Compact Excellent sound Super easy setup
    Cons:
Android and Iphone Apps are a bit limited in functionality.

    As Promised

Written By Stocky, Delray Beach, FL on Monday, January 27, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been looking for a long time for compact unit like this for months. This has all the features I was looking for unlike other brands that offered only some. The set up was very easy and smooth. Once you learn the intuiative menus the operation is a breeze as well. The sound output is sufficient to make almost any speakers sound good. It's on the expensive side but worth every penny.
    Pros:
Easy set-up and operation, excellent sound, fully featured in a compact unit
    Cons:
    None

    Amazing Product

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was torn between the NAD D 7050 and this one. The lack of Bluetooth support had me on the fence but I'm the only one in the family with an AptX Bluetooth device so it didn't make much sense for me. Don't let the RMS output fool you, I have this hooked up to a pair of Definitive BP 7006's and it blows my walls down! The sound this amp puts out is quite crisp and AirPlay / Spotify stream flawlessly.
    Pros:
    * Easy to setup * Quality sound & workmanship * Handy iPAD / Android app
    Cons:
    * None that come to mind

One of my best buys. It does everything. A minor glitch related to signing in especially if you use symbols. However, the unit delivers, excellent sound when coupled with definitive technology speakers with a subwoofer. Beautiful, simple but elegant unit.
    Pros:
Does everything well. High end sound
    Cons:
signing in with symbols a bear e.g. where is "@"

    Really nice setup

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did quite a lot of research to try to find a home stereo receiver. I don't really watch TV and 5.1, 7.1 and whatever else is out there does nothing for me. I want to listen to a great stereo sound like I did when I was in high school in the '80's. I was leaning towards an integrated receiver but as I looked into more products and what would really suit my needs I came across these Marantz receivers that have built in WiFi. I subscribe to SiriusXM and generally like internet radio, but I wanted to play CD's as well and have options for future components. The M-CR610 seemed to be the answer so I took a chance and ordered it. (Not really a "chance" given the return policy!) The M-CR610 does everything that I expected it would. I to my Wi-Fi via the push button in about 5 minutes. I setup my username and password for Sirius XM in about 10 minutes. The CD tray has a solid, well-built feel and opens and closes silently. The sound is absolutely crystal clear and the silence of no source is, well, perfect silence. The 55RMS is plenty to produce a wonderfully crisp, clean sound with plenty of low end that is punchy and not at all muddy from the Bose 301 Series V bookshelf speakers that I decided to run with it. I am very pleased with my purchase and expect to enjoy many years with my setup.
    Pros:
Solid, well-built feel. Small size. Easy to setup various features via Wi-Fi. CD player is a great convenience and sounds really good. Plenty of nice, clean RMS power for my Bose speakers. Very secure, solid speaker input terminals and ability to bi-amp, if you want. Sleek, good-looking unit.
    Cons:
    I haven't found any yet.

    Marantz M-CR610 Stereo Receiver

Written By SteveM, Central New Hampshire on Tuesday, December 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In many ways this is the perfect receiver for use in a den or bedroom. It's compact, combining a receiver and CD player, and thus occupies a very small footprint. It's easy to set up. It plays CDs, am/fm, and with Wi-Fi, Apple AirPlay. internet radio, Pandora, etc. I hooked it up to a couple of Klipsch KG4 speakers that I bought in the late 1980s and the sound is great. It's perfect for my audio needs. So why only three stars? Because I can not upgrade the firmware despite multiple telephone calls with Crutchfield and Marantz technical support. According to Marantz the unit is timing out before it can connect to their servers that are located in Japan. I tried all of their suggestions such as connecting the unit directly to the modem and attempting to update early in the morning or late at night. Nothing worked. So unless you are willing to live without software updates, or alternatively, have a high speed business internet connection or live in Asia, I do not recommend this unit. And I say that with regret since it's otherwise a great receiver.
    Pros:
ease of setup, CD/receiver combination, wireless internet
    Cons:
    inability to update software

    • I am using vintage Klipsch Chorus ll. Lots of power sound great. [ J MICHAEL   Aug 05, 2014 ]
    • JBL Control1 [ C-J-N   Aug 04, 2014 ]
    • Klipsh 75W - 8ohm, RB-25. [ Jerome   Aug 03, 2014 ]
    • Shelf speakers KEF Q300. The largest shelf speakers KEF makes. It's an excellent match. [ Jaroslaw   Aug 02, 2014 ]
    • Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1 and they sound pretty good [ Phillip   Aug 02, 2014 ]
    • Dali Zensor 1, small bookshelf speakers in medium sized room. Great bass with no subwoofer. [ Theodore   Aug 02, 2014 ]
    • Using it in a relatively small room, an office, with Infinity Beta 10 speakers. [ Peter   Aug 02, 2014 ]
    • Boston Acoustic M25 bookshelf speakers. It sounds amazing!!! Crisp, clean, deep sound! [ MICHAEL C   Aug 02, 2014 ]
    • I'm using the Bose 301 Series V speakers. They are a great match for the Marantz you are considering. The sound is really, really good! [ DANIEL   Aug 02, 2014 ]
    • I return the Marantz. [ ROB   Aug 02, 2014 ]
I am looking buy the Marantz M-CR610 to connect to a whole house audio system (SpeakerCraft BB1235). Is it a full line level "line out" like on other typical components (receivers/CD/DVD players) or lower voltage like IPODs/portable players (which results in lower volume without a line level pre-amplifier)? Some mini systems do not provide component level line out voltage, but rather portable media player level voltage. [ A  May 28, 2014 ]

    • @ A JI am sorry I don't think I am enough qualified to answer to your question. What I can tell you is the Marantz M-cr610 is compact, look nice.I use it for listening the music, radio, cd. The distribution and power is enough for the whole living room (400 sq/ft). The bad point is some time there is a delay to connect internet radio stations/also for tuner stations.Other wise for the price and my use, I am satisfied with it.I just want to add, the Crutchfield team is GREAT.I will purchased with them again.I hope the review will help you in your choice.ErwanPs; sorry for my english. [ ERWAN   May 31, 2014 ]
    • I am using the M-CR610 to power two full size, unpowered Klipsh (75 Watt speakers) in bi-amp mode and it works great. This is a system that is on the smaller side, but I would not consider it mini. [ Jerome   May 29, 2014 ]
    • Not sure I understand your question so ask again if this doesnt help. It has line outs for 4 speakers. We dont need a preamp with this unit. We are running two klipsch bookshelf speakers with it and never run it anywhere near full volume. [ Kismet   May 29, 2014 ]
    • I connected mine to a denon receiver that way and it works just fineit is about the same perceived level previous cd player connected that way. [ JOSEPHUS VAN   May 28, 2014 ]
    • I don't know specifics regarding the voltage, but can tell you that you will need a pre-amplifier, as the line out does not run through the Marantz pre-amp...IE no volume control. I use the Marantz in a small room with a pair of tube amps and bookshelf speakers. I needed to insert a pre-amp/volume control between the Marantz line out and the amps. I use a Pro-Ject Prebox S, which works very nicely. [ NEAL   May 28, 2014 ]
    • I returned this product, so I will not be able to answer this question. Sorry, Rob [ ROB   May 28, 2014 ]
I set up my new M-CR610 using one wifi network with limitations and would like to switch to another wifi network. How can I do that? I did not find info in the user manual. The say to look at the quick start manual, but then, everything was automatic. Now even if I switch of the first wifi, it does not automatically look for a new one. Thanks! [ Benoit  Apr 14, 2014 ]

I want to drive 5 ceiling speakers in our basement with background music, not audiophile listening and no bass booming dace music would this work?? [ harlanhogan  Feb 09, 2014 ]

    • Sorry, we are only driving two speakers right now. There are only four connections for speakers, though. Just use the wattage to figure about driving 4. best KRC [ Kismet   Feb 11, 2014 ]
    • I have owned the M-CR610 for a couple of months and I'm extremely pleased with the sound quality, build quality and ability to access music from almost every conceivable source. However I believe it supports only 4 speaker and one subwoofer connectors which would not meet your 5 speaker requirement. I would look for a proper 5.1 receiver to drive your speakers. It will give you more flexibility in how the music should be presented and not lock you into just stereo sounds from 5 speakers. [ CHRISTOPHER   Feb 10, 2014 ]
    • I bought this unit recently. It seems to be designed to drive 2 pairs of speakers. There is also a sub-woofer capacity. Overall it is a really nice unit, sounds great with a pair of jbl control 1. Setup was very easy. [ C-J-N   Feb 10, 2014 ]
    • I'm not a true audiophile but you should be able to drive 4 speakers no problem suspect your 5th speaker is not a sub so I'm not sure how to connect it for a stereo effect [ Richard   Feb 09, 2014 ]
    • Hi Harlan, Well, the unit has 2 speaker outputs on channel A and 2 speaker outputs on channel B. Each speaker gets 25 watts RMS if you are running 4 speakers, using A and B at the same time. As far as your 5th speaker, maybe there is a way to split one of the speaker wires to go to 2 speakers instead of one. I'm not certain how that would work though. Good luck! [ DANIEL   Feb 09, 2014 ]
    • For background music this unit might be somewhat of an overkill. It can drive two set of speakers, A and B, in two different rooms simultaneously. It can also drive a sub-woofer. In my opinion, for your purposes, you should look at 5.2 A/V network receiver [ Peter   Feb 09, 2014 ]
    • Four speakers, A and B channels. I have not been able to connect receiver to network yet or to hard drive. Complicated. [ JEFFREY S   Feb 09, 2014 ]
    • I don't think this would work well. There are only hookups for 4 speakers. [ Jaroslaw   Feb 09, 2014 ]
CAN I STREAM AND USE THE CONTROL APP FROM A SINGLE APPLE PRODUCT SIMULTANEOUSLY? THANKS, JACK [ Jack  Dec 08, 2013 ]

    • Will this unit drive a pair of wireless speakers? [ C-J-N   Jan 02, 2014 ]
    • Sorry I didn't try all functions yet. So far I very please, It is compact, nice design, easy to use and powerful. I recommande it. [ ERWAN   Dec 13, 2013 ]
    • Hi Jack. It doesn't look like we've heard back form any of the owners, but I suspect that this should work. The streaming should continue as a background application when you pull up the remote app. [ Jeff Staff  Dec 11, 2013 ]
