About the Marantz MM8077

Woody Sherman

An uncompromising recipe for sound quality

It can't be stated often enough: the overall quality of your entertainment system's sound is dependent on sufficient quantities of clean, instantly available power. There must be enough power. It must be pristine. And it must be available in an instant to give you the impact and full-frequency response you expect from today's deeply-layered and demanding movie soundtracks.

It must be pristine. And it must be available in an instant to give you the impact and full-frequency response you expect from today's deeply-layered and demanding movie soundtracks.

Respect for authority

So stand back. Take a look at the elegant, matte black Marantz MM8077 power amplifier from the front and tell me if your first impression is anything other than "authority." If you are at all skeptical, pick it up — great power components demand some mass. The '8077 is designed to deliver impressive power to seven channels with that same authority, so your surround sound experience will draw you into the action on your TV screen in a manner you've probably only experienced at a theater.

The Marantz MM8077's massive high current toroidal power transformer

The Marantz MM8077's massive high current toroidal power transformer

Under the cover

Take a peek inside and you'll be even more impressed. The copper-plated chassis isolates the unit from outside noise, vibration, and electrical interference. A massive, high-current toroidal power transformer, paired with high power filter capacitors delivers the power you need in reserve for the short-term transients and peaks so common in both music and movie sound. And in order to give you the best possible performance from high-resolution audio formats, each channel has a current feedback discrete power amp output stage and multiple high-current discrete power transistors.

Fan club

Heat, the enemy of power amp performance, is swiftly dealt with by way of an innovative dual extruded heat sink assembly with ultra-quiet fan cooling. The fan is cleverly mounted internally over the heat sinks and not to the chassis frame where it might be more easily heard.

The '8077 features both unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR inputs for all seven channels. Loudspeaker terminals are gold-plated to ensure the best possible signal transfer.

Product Research

Features

7-Channel Power Amplifier: The Marantz MM8077 seven-channel power amplifier delivers power and detail, and is rated at 150 watts (into 8-ohms, at 20-20k, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels)  and 180 watts (into 6-ohms, at 20-20k, with 0.08%, driving 2 channels). The MM8077 power amp matches perfectly with the Marantz AV-8801 home theater preamp/processor (642AV8801, sold separately).

Current Feedback Discrete Amplifier Design: Featuring Marantz's unique current feedback discrete power amp output stages (with "push-pull circuitry) that are identical for all channels, the MM8077 is equipped with multiple high-current discrete power transistors that feature high slew rate along with low impedance drive capability, for maximum operating bandwidth and solid performance in order to extract the most detail from today's high resolution audio formats.

Copper Chassis w/Aluminum Resin Front-Panel: The copper-plated chassis provides isolation from extraneous noise, and features a multi-layer reinforced bottom panel assembly for maximum rigidity along with triple-layer top cover. The power amp's front-panel features a combination of aluminum extrusion and glass-reinforced resin which shields internal circuitry and absorbs internal and external resonances. The MM8077 features the classic Marantz ringed porthole display with a blue illumination accent that includes a display on/off function.

High Power, High Current Power Supply: The high power, high current power supply features a massive toroidal power transformer along with high power (71WVDC) filter capacitors with a total 100,000µF capacitance that provides substantial headroom for dynamic peaks along with the ability to handle lower impedance speaker loads.

Highly Efficient Heat Dissipation: The output devices are mounted on a dual extruded aluminum alloy heat sink assembly, configured in a tunnel arrangement that provides both passive and active cooling. The massive heat sinks feature multiple ribbed fins that provide a large passive cooling area, and the assembly is book-ended with a whisper quiet fan that automatically kicks in to provide near silent active cooling when the soundtrack heats up. As the fan is mounted internally directly to the heat sinks (and not externally to the chassis cover as is often the case) even when it's running, it's designed to be whisper quiet.

Unbalanced (RCA) & Balanced (XLR) Inputs: For maximum connectivity, the MM8077 features both unbalanced (RCA) and balanced (XLR) inputs for each of the seven channels. Each amp channel can be configured to use your choice of input connector.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The Marantz MM8077 is fitted with seven pair of binding-post speaker terminals. The binding-post terminals feature audiophile-grade construction, and are gold-plated for maximum signal transfer, and they can easily handle a wide range of audiophile speaker cable connectors (such as bare wire, single banana plugs, and pin-connectors).

DC Control: The MM8077 features DC trigger input/outputs (3.5mm) for external power on/off control. The DC trigger input allows the MM8077's power to be controlled by another device (5-15V). The DC Trigger output allows the MM8077 to control the power of another compatible device (12V/44mA).

Remote Power Control: Dual RC-5 remote control in/out RCA jacks allow for connection to a compatible Marantz components. When a compatible Marantz preamp is connected, this unit's power can be switched on and off simultaneously with the preamp. The RC-5 input is connected to the preamp, and the RC-5 output can be connected to other compatible Marantz components; CD player, DVD player, Tuner, etc.

Flasher Input: The IR flasher input is useful with universal remote controls; power and mute remote codes are available for the MM8077.

Low-Power Standby Mode: For environmental and energy-saving considerations, power consumption during standby mode has been reduced to less than 0.4 W.

Auto-Standby Mode: The MM8077 automatically switches to standby mode when there has been no signal for approximately 30 minutes. This prevents power from being wasted whenever you forget to turn the power off.

Q
Can I switch this AMP to a 2 channel Audio setting as well as a surround sound application?
benjamin  Feb 06, 2022
1 answer
A
It's a 7 channel power amp, if you want 2 channel amplification only (like stereo), the pre amp would have to do this. I use it in this mode quite a lot when listening to music.

Q
Can this marantz drive this speakers I have cornwall iv,forteiv, and klipsch rf-7111 are this speakers to powerfull for this amp or can it be drive with ease with this marantz?
carlos  Jul 13, 2021
1 answer
A
This amp will be able to run all three sets of the speakers and we recommend placing the RF-7 III speakers on the front main channels. Then, adding the RC-64 III center channel speaker to complete the passive speaker part of the surround sound system: https://www.crutchfield.com/shopsearch/rc-64_III.html

Q
How many watts into 4 ohms ?
jose  Jan 23, 2020
1 answer
A
Hi Jose, thank you for your question. The Marantz MM8077 is incompatible with 4ohm speakers, unfortunately. However, you may want to check out the NAD Masters Series M27, 7 channel power amp! This amp is compatible with a 4ohm speaker, and will deliver 180 watts at 4ohm! Feel free to chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695! We will be happy to answer any questions you may have!

Q
What's the output with all channels driven and can this be used with the sr7012?
michael  Jun 17, 2018
1 answer
A
There is no provided spec for "all channels driven". Each channel is individually capable of producing the 150 watts RMS when every audible frequency (20-20,0000) is sent though it at the same time. The SR7012 does have a multi-channel RCA pre-amp output so, sure, you can use it to provide signal to the MM8077. Q
Can I Bi-amp front channel speakers on this amp, driving an overall 5.1 setup? My front speakers are Paradigm 9se Mk3, ready for bi-amping (6ohm nominal, 4 ohm min impedance). Running off of my older Marantz SR19ex receiver. Thanks.
michael  Jan 11, 2017
1 answer
A
Yes, as long as you can configure your preamp/processor for a 5.1 bi-amp configuration then you can use the MM8077 amp to power that system. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
What's the difference in the balanced and unbalanced connections is one better than the other?
david  Dec 31, 2016
1 answer
A
The XLR connections are "balanced" and have three pins - a positive conductor, a negative conductor, and a ground. The ground wire helps reduce electronic noise throughout the cable. XLR plugs lock into place, ensuring a secure connection. The RCA connections are "Unbalanced" and have two conductors; the positive and the negative (which also acts as the ground). They are more susceptible to interference but are much more affordable than their XLR counterparts. I hope that helps My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

Q
11 channel receiver 7 channel amp why is that.Should be 11 channel amp ?
byron  Aug 11, 2015

A
It does not appear that Marantz offers an 11 channel amp at this time. The MM8077 is a 7 channel power amp. To take advantage of an11 channel pre-amp, you can order the Marantz MM7055 5 channel amp to supplement the MM8077 (a total of 12 channels). I have a 7.4.1 setup, using the MM7055 to power the four height speakers. Other vendors make an 11 channel amp if you prefer to go that route.
brian  Aug 13, 2015
A
Not necessarily. You can have many different configurations with a pre-amp depending on your power requirements. For an 11.x setup, you'll want either 2 MM8077s or one MM8077 and a MM7055 (use the 7055 which is a little less powerful for surround backs/wides/heights). An 11 channel standalone power amp with sufficient power to warrant getting a pre/power setup would likely not be feasible although there could be some high end (re:10k+) manufacturers that offer them.

Q
I have the Marantz AV7701 processor, considering the Marantz MM8077 power amp. I have a 5.1 channel speaker setup. FL, FR, SRL, SRR, Center, and Sub. The 8077 does not have a dedicated sub output, what channel should I use for sub?
jack  Dec 14, 2014
2 answers
A
Jack - Most subwoofers are powered, in which case you connect the subwoofer to either the SW1 or SW2 connection on the back of the AV7701 processor. The AV7701 has the two connectors so that you can connect two subwoofers at the same time if you have them. If not, just choose either SW1 of SW2
art  Dec 18, 2014
A
Hi Jack C, Sorry but I have a powered subwoofer and as a result I came out of the Premap AV8801 (sub posit 1) into my powered sub. A powered sub has its on amp and if I'm correct can't be or should not be by-passed.
