Elevate digital music to reference quality

Enjoy the convenience of digital music with crystal-clear sound quality through your home stereo system. Marantz designed their Reference Series NA-11S1 network music player to squeeze every drop of detail and sonic goodness out of digital music files, no matter where they're stored. With Internet connectivity and support for Apple® AirPlay®, you can get music from a wide variety of sources to your speakers for sound that can be as smooth and lush as any CD. Stream from an iPhone® or iPad® over your wireless home network, or use your Apple device as a remote to stream from a networked computer running iTunes®. Airplay streaming requires a home Wi-Fi® network and a wired connection between your player and home network.

Mac and PC users welcome

Not an Apple devotee? That's all right — you can still stream music from a DLNA-compatible networked PC. Or just plug your computer into the rear-panel asynchronous USB input and let the NA-11S1's audiophile digital-to-analog converters give you performance far beyond your computer sound card's capabilities. The player's internal clock takes control of the music data stream, reducing timing errors known as "jitter" that can smear subtle details and make your music sound harsh. Using this USB connection also circumvents electromagnetic and radio frequency noise generated by your PC or Mac for a sonically pure signal that results in a wide soundstage and excellent tonal depth. Fire up some high-res files to really let this player flex its muscles.

Marantz Reference Series NA-11S1 network music player with AirPlay

The NA-11S1 offers many options for getting the most out of your digital music. (The NA-11S1 does not include the pictured amplifier, Apple devices or any other other components or accessories.)

Discover new music

Whether you're interested in discovering new music or checking out old favorites, you'll enjoy the NA-11S1's built-in access to Spotify®, SiriusXM, and Pandora®, as well as thousands of Internet radio stations. It's perfect for endless musical explorations or those times when you feel like being surprised by what song comes up next.

High-quality D/A conversion

How does this network player get your digital music to sound so good? The answer lies in the audiophile-grade 192kHz/24-bit DACs, which convert your digital files precisely to clean analog signals for output to your amplifier and speakers, so no details are lost in the process. Plus, Marantz's Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules are used in place of stardard op amp chips, for reduced noise and improved dynamic range and detail.

Solid construction for stellar sound

Top-notch audio performance demands a sophisticated design, from the circuit board to the chassis. Marantz optimized this player to minimize interference and distortion for pure music playback. The copper-shielded toroidal power transformer provides a heavy dose of clean current. The copper-plated chassis features a thick aluminum top panel — strong enough to support another component. And the aluminum die-cast feet provide stability as well as protection from external interference — solid footing for uncompromised sound. And it's all backed by Marantz's impressive five-year warranty.

Remote possibilites

Some wireless streaming systems leave a lot to be desired in the remote department. But Marantz has included a versatile remote control that lets you access network music, tweak settings, and apply digital sound filters. Plus, you can download the Marantz Control app for your Apple or Android™ device, giving you intuitive touchscreen control on your mobile phone or tablet.

Looks a lot better than it functions

Written by: Jack from Washington on May 29, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Looks great, but functionality is a huge disappointment.

I've had this a little over a week, and have been underwhelmed. The sound it produces is nothing special - it sounds no better than the DAC in my 7-year-old Denon 4308ci. I have it connected via studio quality balanced cables to a Marantz PM-11S3.

I am extremely frustrated by its lack of responsiveness when using the remote to browse internet radio stations or browse my modest library of HD tracks. Despite tracks playing fine in Windows Media Player and VLC, try to use WMP's "Play To" feature (which, again, worked fine on my 7-year-old Denon), and you just get a generic "File Format Error" or "Network Error" on the display of the NA-11S1.

Try to browse your music collection using the "Music Server" feature on the NA-11S1 and it takes literally seconds to move up and down menu items. My NA-11S1 is hard wired to a gigabit network, which works fine on every other device in the house, even wireless, so it's not a network issue.

FLAC files may or may not play - Try downloading Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me" from hdtracks and get it to play on the NA-11S1. It doesn't even recognize the tracks in the library. Again, these same files play fine on WMP and on VLC. They are 192 KHz 24-bit FLAC files which the Marantz purports to support. Good luck.

Airplay works, but has a tendency to disconnect repeatedly. Overall, just a real let down from such an expensive device.

Pros: - Looks - Build Quality

Cons: - Ability to actually play FLAC files - DLNA support is worse than it was 7 years ago from the same company - Price - Too few digital inputs on the back. Would it kill them to offer two or three TOSLINK inputs?

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All-in-one solution for music in my it!

Written by: Dave H. from Buckingham, PA on December 4, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am less than 3 weeks into my time with the Marantz NA-11S1; it is displacing my OPPO BDP-95 as the primary source in my system (ModWright LS100 & KWA100SE, KEF Reference 205/2, midrange Nordost and WyWires cabling). I mostly listen to 24/96 or better FLAC files streamed from a NAS, although I have acquired a dozen or so DSD files for use with the Marantz. The Marantz is significantly more resolving and musical than the OPPO - I was shocked actually to be hearing things I never knew were there, and once again my system can hold me hostage for hours on end with renewed imaging and soundstage. Using the USB input and JRiver from my laptop, the DSD recordings are just liquid, smooth, enchantment. I really now am listening to the music and not the equipment. I heartily recommend auditioning this piece of gear. I find the micro-details of the sound to be more natural and therefore musical than I was getting from the stock OPPO and the SABRE DACs, which were ever so slightly harsh around the "edges" to my ear. I re-wired my entire network with CAT7 cable, which I recommend so avoid the audio cable craziness. Just now the album ended I was playing, and it is great to open a new tab in my browser and connect to the Marantz and get the next piece started. My intent when I purchased this piece was an extended evaluation, using the 60-day return policy to good advantage -- now, maybe 15 days into it, I can't imagine giving it up.

Pros: The Music! It's beautiful! Superb build quility. DSD capability and fidelity. Gapless FLAC playback (at last!!!)

Cons: None so far.

Audio Features

Dual Clocks + Jitter Reduction: A host of Marantz digital technologies combine to deliver the ultimate audio experience. The NA-11S1 is equipped with dual master audio clock generators with jitter reduction for numerous sampling frequencies and bit depths, up to 192kHz/24-bits. A number of audio file types are supported, including WAV, WMA, MP3, MPEG-4 AAC, FLAC, and ALAC, as well as DSD over PC.

DSP Filtering: The latest Marantz DSP processor (DSP PEC777f3) provides precision digital filtering, and the NA-11S1 offers a number of DSP modes that let you tailor the sound to your liking. There are two for digital filters, as well as the option of noise shaping and a DC filter with a 1.7 Hz cutoff.

  • Digital Filters: Two filter characteristic types can be selected for DSD and PCM sources.
    • Filter 1:
      • PCM Sources: This filter has short pre-echo and post-echo characteristics. It carries a lot of sound information; therefore very profound sound image and a clear sound source are reproduced.
      • DSD Sources: This is a direct mode that does not perform any filtering on the DSD data. The original source data is reproduced without any alteration.
    • Filter 2:
      • PCM Sources: This filter offers asymmetrical impulse response, resembling analog sound quality.
      • DSD Sources: The asymmetrical DAC operation gives priority to the resolution, resulting in a smoother sound. DSD data exceeding 100kHz is attenuated.
  • Noise Shaper: Noise Shaper is a type of digital feedback used in the algorithms for oversampling. Digital feedback improves the linearity of bass sounds and the noise characteristics of the audio frequency band.
  • DC Filter: This filter is effective in preventing excessive speaker vibration when playing music sources where audio with extremely low frequency noise characteristics has been recorded. The cut frequency is set a 1.7Hz.

Exclusive Output Technology: For optimum audio fidelity, the NA-11S1 features high current, high resolution audiophile D/A converters, operating in differential mode for the lowest noise and widest dynamic range. The critical post-D/A current-to-voltage conversion is handled by the latest Marantz HDAM-SA2 devices, which feature precision discrete components in lieu of standard op amp chips. The final analog output stage features additional HDAM devices, and there are two output choices - unbalanced (RCA) and balanced (XLR). The balanced outputs also feature a phase-inversion option for compatibility with any XLR-equipped pre-amp.

Digital Connectivity: Dual digital audio outputs (optical/coaxial) are provided for connection to your home theater receiver or other components. There are also dual digital inputs (optical/coaxial) that let you use the NA-11S1 as a DAC with other digital audio sources. The digital connections support Linear PCM signals (stereo) with sampling frequencies of 32, 44.1, 48, 65, 88.2, 96, 176.4, & 192 kHz.

Headphone Amplifier: The NA-11S1 also employs a high-quality dedicated headphone amplifier, which features its own output stage that's also equipped with HDAM-SA2 devices along with a precision variable analog volume control.

Rugged Construction: The NA-11S1 features a rugged chassis with internal copper-plated surfaces. The thick 5mm top panel can easily support the weight of an additional component, and the dual-layer bottom plate and die-cast aluminum cabinet feet provide solid rigidity along with additional resistance from external vibrations. The beefy power supply features a high current toroidal power transformer with multiple oxygen free copper (OFC) secondary windings, and is housed in a copper-plated enclosure for maximum shielding. Multiple separate circuit boards ensure minimal interference between the various analog and digital stages.

Network Functions

Network Connection: The Marantz NA-11S1 is equipped with an Ethernet (RJ-45) port that lets you connect the network audio player to your home network (LAN) and your broadband internet provider. Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

I've used the Iphone app, and it looks nice and works great for internet radio, Pandora, etc., and would work well for a NAS music collection of reasonable size, especially if it is set up as playlists. Mine is very large, and I don't use playlists, and the app can't store the index locally (epic fail), so it take forever to load it from the NAS. [ Mike  May 23, 2014 ]
The Marantz app is very good. I have used the Pioneer app to control the N50 and understand your frustration with it. Marantz provides most of the functionality you would expect along with album art and the ability to create play lists. It is not as sophisticated as the Linn Kinsky app, but it is definitely a good app for controlling the NA-11S1. I use a dedicated ipod touch with the Marantz app and have had no problems or bad things to say about the app. [ Mark  May 23, 2014 ]
Thanks for the reply. So you can open a browser on the mobile device and go to the IP address of the device (if I understand you correctly)? [ Branon  May 22, 2014 ]
I am using the app primarily on a Nexus 7 Android tablet, but also have it on my phone. The app is not bad, I'd give it a "B+". If you have a lot of wireless devices coming and going as you come in and out of your wireless zone and turn things on and off, it seems like the dynamic IP assignments can cause the app to hang, but even so it is easy to shut down and restart. The direct access using a browser from any device is rock solid - not useful for browsing large libraries, but great for switching inputs quickly. Must comment that the audio performance is superb in my system. [ David  May 22, 2014 ]
