Enjoy more music on your high-end audio system

"Internet music" and "great sound quality" don't often go together, but they most definitely do with this network audio player from Marantz. The NA7004 connects both to your home network and your audio receiver, allowing you to enjoy cool music options like PANDORA® Internet radio, Rhapsody®, and more, on your best audio system. You can plug your iPod® straight into the front panel or upgrade to Apple AirPlay® for ultra-convenient access to your iTunes® library — no dock needed.

NA7004

High-quality circuitry and components for an exceptional listening experience

This player exemplifies Marantz's commitment to superb sound. The NA7004 uses high-quality parts throughout, chosen only after extensive listening tests. You'll hear a spacious, lifelike soundstage emerge from deep silence, thanks in part to shielding that prevents digital noise from affecting sensitive analog circuits.

A "DAC" of all trades

You've probably noticed that digital music files that sound fine though a set of earbuds often sound thin and flat when played through a stereo system. The NA7004's advanced Cirrus DAC (digital-to-audio converter) will surprise you with its ability to spin straw into gold, sonically speaking. Its impressive number-crunching power handles digital audio signals all the way up to 192kHz/24-bit, reproducing your favorite music files with natural warmth and rich detail. Take advantage of the great DAC in this player four different ways:

  • stream digital music over your home network, including files stored on your PC's hard drive and music from the Internet
  • plug your iPod® directly into the front-panel USB "Type A" input
  • use the player's back-panel USB "Type B" input to play files stored on a PC's hard drive
  • connect your CD player to the back-panel optical or coaxial digital input
No matter which way you choose, the NA7004 will breathe new life into your favorite digital music sources and let you hear them in a way you've never heard before.

Discover new music

An Internet-powered player like the NA7004 is a great way to broaden your listening horizons. You'll have easy access to thousands of Internet radio stations, plus you can tune in music services, like Rhapsody, Napster®, and PANDORA Internet radio. Use Rhapsody to explore a vast catalog of music without paying for each song (there's just a small monthly subscription fee). PANDORA lets you create personalized radio stations based on the artists and songs you like.

Quick access to your favorites

You can also connect your iPhone® or iPod touch® directly using the front-panel USB input (and there's a free iPod/iPhone App you can download at the iTunes Store). If you'd like to avoid running a cable to your home network, this Monster PowerNet system lets you use your home's electrical wiring to pass Ethernet signals. And for wireless playback, check out the optional RX101 Bluetooth® module.

Unleash your iTunes® music — with a free upgrade to AirPlay®

Apple's exciting AirPlay technology lets you access your favorite music from your iPhone®, iPad™, iPod touch®, or your iTunes library on your computer using this Marantz receiver. You'll be able to control iTunes and see music information, including your album art, track titles, and artist info on your compatible Apple device, or on your TV if your Marantz receiver is equipped with a video output. First you will need a free firmware upgrade. Go to the Marantz website for instructions on how to download and activate the upgrade. Requires a wireless home network. HDAM SA2 Circuits: In the analog section of the NA7004 are Marantz-proprietary HDAM SA2 circuits that handle critical buffering and stage-to-stage signal transition.

Symmetrical Audio Circuitry: Symmetrical signal traces help maintain perfect synchronization between Left and Right channels for rock-stable imaging and a convincing soundstage.

Impedance Matching Copper Plate: An impedance-matching copper plate inside the rear panel just behind the analog outputs improves signal-to-noise performance and channel separation to preserve the NA7004's outstanding imaging capabilities.

High-Grade D/A Converter: The Marantz NA7004 employs a Cirrus Logic advanced D/A converter (CS4398) for superb high-fidelity audio playback (2Hz-96kHz). The Cirrus CS4398 stereo D/A Converter offers several advantages. An advanced multi-bit Delta-Sigma architecture handles 24-bit/192kHz digital signals, and boasts extraordinary dynamic range (up to 110db) as well as equally exceptional signal-to-noise performance (up to 110dB) so your digital music files provide the warmth, detail, and resolution you demand.

M-DAX: The Marantz Dynamic Audio eXpander (M-DAX) makes up for lost audio content in compressed audio sources (from lossy compression) during playback. You can choose from on of the following M-DAX levels - High, Mid, Low, or Off.

Analog & Digital Outputs: The Marantz Network Audio Player features both analog & digital audio outputs.

  • Analog Output: The Marantz NA7004 is equipped with a set of stereo audio RCA outputs to connect the unit to your home stereo receiver. The analog output will transfer network, USB, and iPod/iPhone audio content to your home stereo receiver.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using the NA7004 connected to my own DAC. It delivers a clean signal to the DAC and is easy to listen to. I also have hooked up my Ipod 160 to it. It worked right away playing the playlists I chose on the Ipod. Again the sound was clean, subtle and musical. In tuning internet radio stations the NA7004 is easy as long as you use its internal search tools. If you want to find a particular station it becomes a bit more complex to operate. I am interested in finding the internet version of XM radio. So far no luck.

Pros: Clean, dynamic and musical sound. Easy to use. Connects to Ipod.

Cons: Difficult to search for particular or unique internet radio stations.

Best of the lot, though not perfect

Written By Tom, Rochester NY on Wednesday, March 28, 2012

After finally bailing on the Swiss Army Knife AVR world and moving up to an NAD T787 AVR, I needed a separate component to still have some "bells & whistles" like Airplay & DLNA, but with higher quality sound. I used an Apple TV to "get by" till I could decide on a permanent replacement. I looked at several options, including direct competitors' offerings from NAD and Denon, Sonos. None were a perfect fit for me, each had some good and bad points.

I chose the NA7004 basically for these reasons: Airplay excellent DAC for streaming (different world than most "all-in-one" AVRs) more flexible inputs/outputs (allows for multiple options going forward) excellent headphone amp (eliminated need to get external HP amp for my Audio Technicas)

Those advantages offset some negatives like the small and clunky display and the inability to control Airplay volume remotely. I'm not a huge internet radio fan to begin with, and the small display 15' away makes that even less appealing. I'm keeping the Apple TV in the mix for patio Zone 2, for volume control via iphone/Remote app. BTW, WizzApp is useless--the forums were right!

Summarizing, this player will give you excellent sound for streaming, especially via analog out, limited only by the source content you throw its way. The headphone amp is better than any separate HP amps I've heard under $500. And you have choices going forward, e.g., NAS drives. But depending on your applications, might be missing some conveniences.

Pros: Streaming sound quality, Headphone Amp, Versatile Inputs/Outputs, less prone to early obsolescence than competing models

Cons: Small Display, Volume Control limitations

Marantz NA 7004

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Marantz did a great job of making the NA 7004 easy to use once I figured out the menu structure. Within minutes, I was listening to internet radio stations from around the world. There are so many stations available that this alone exceeded my expectations.

The NA7004 has excellent sound when you find a station that is doing a good job of streaming the audio for broadcast. 128Kb/s or greater is decent and begins to have good fidelity. With a quality stream rate, internet audio is surprisingly easy on the ears as reproduced by the NA 7004. I believe it sounds better that FM radio. I did not try Pandora, nor do I own an IPOD so I can't comment on these sources.

If you really want high fidelity, listen to 24 bit 96K sampled FLAC files, and this player will provide spectacular sound. These files play easily from a USB stick or a DLNA network server. The NA 7004 is able to D/A coaxial or optical sources. The electronics and processing is top grade; the limitation is the digital audio that you feed it. The headphone output has good transparency with plenty of power feeding a stereo 1/4 phone socket. The analog outputs are fed by some very high quality D/A converters and electronics.

. . As usual ordering was easy and quick. Crutchfield delivered UPS Ground to my home within a week.

Pros: All of the above. The NA 7004 is very versatile, has all kinds of in and out options.

Cons: Pricey at first glance, but still worth the money. No WiFi, not an issue for me as I'm hard wired. Wish it had a larger front display screen.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This really is the "Swiss Army Knife," of digital music. I love being able to stream digital music from a variety of devices and formats to my home stereo. It does require a hardwire connection to your router so I would have that run in advance. There are so many ways to play music through this thing that it takes a little time playing with to discover all of the methods. I have played music from a Synology NAS, multile home PC's, i-pods, usb thumb drives, internet radio and pandora. It has excellent sound quality, of course it only sounds as good as the media it is playing (flac files sound much better than 64kbs internet radio). My music collection on flac and mp3 sound incredible. It can access all of these from the remote control. Depending on what you are playing it can also be controlled via itunes, windows media player, remote control app in windows and an ipod. You can also control it with the keypad on the front of the component. It is amazing to me the flexibiltiy of this device.

The NA7004 complements my setup, I am using a Marantz pm8004 with Polk Lsi9 speakers and a Polk Sub. I have a Synology NAS with a large music collections. It sounds awsome and the NA7004 really completes the system.

Pros: I have been a music lover my whole life. This device networked with other products is the type of thing that I have literally dreamed of. It was easy to hook up and start playing music right out of the box. I can access an amazing varity of music with 1 remote control. It looks great and most importantly sounds great.

Cons: There is a very brief pause in between tracks when streaming flac files. It takes about 1 minute to boot up when turning on. I upgraded to airplay which was easy to do but it would have been great if that was pre-installed. I can not "reverse" to replay the last couple of seconds of music. It has to start back at the beginnig of the track. There may or may not be a less expensive product that can do similar things.

Quite nice

Written By Lincoln, Post Falls, ID on Tuesday, September 06, 2011

I am quite pleased with this. I took this unit and had it playing within 5 minutes out of the box. It is extremely simple to install. I am the minority I suspect in that I really am not a huge internet radio fan. I do enjoy it from time to time. But what really drew me in to this unit was the USB connections and the DAC that was capable of 24 bit support. If you like high resolution FLAC files and want to play them on the home system, this is a good way. I just copied over my FLAC 24s over to thumbdrive and within minutes I was really impressed. The only draw back is the lack of wireless. I'm not saying I would use it but I would like the option.

Update on my NA7004

Written By Charles, Toms River, NJ on Friday, September 02, 2011

This is a follow up on my original review. I generalized the sound of the NA7004 as being as good as FM. I have to correct that and say it is FAR better than FM. After the unit broke in for another month the sound really, I mean REALLY opened up. I would put the sound level on par with CD quality.

My main use for the NA7004 is classical music at normal listening levels. The sound is extremely clean, clear, articulate and dynamic. It does not suffer from any form of compression in either the midrange or treble.

After comparing it to my local FM channels it is far superior in quality and clarity. I just can't believe how happy I am with this unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like many of the Marantz products the NA7004 is a very stylish and elegant in both looks and function. The manual is intimidating considering this unit is virtually a plug and play. So take the manual and put it away. I plugged the unit in, it initialized and five minutes later - internet music. It WAS that simple.

If your streaming rate is around 128k the sound is on par with any FM radio station. The sound had a good solid bass and none of the dreaded treble rolloff which is a common problem of compressed music. Marantz designed a player that can bring the entire world of music to your ears.

My NA7004 is paired with an equally attractive Marantz PM8004 amp.

Great Job Marantz. I would recommend this player to anyone.
