Our take on the Marantz NR1403

by Marshall Chase
Marantz

Receivers: Your ticket to sensational sound

Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more — it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.

Big home theater sound from a compact component

The NR1403 is sized just right to fit comfortably on just about any bookshelf or TV stand. This full-featured model measures only half the height of many surround sound receivers, yet it boasts all the clean power you need to drive five speakers, and enough inputs to connect a full complement of A/V sources. Even though it's rated at an understated 50 watts per channel, the NR1403's high-quality amplification is a great match for most room sizes, speakers and listening preferences.

Convenient switching for your HD components

3D TV Learn more Blu-ray players, video game consoles, and HD satellite, cable and DVR boxes all go well with the NR1403. HDMI switching lets you send all your high-def digital video sources through a single connection to your TV, making hookup a breeze. Marantz takes the extra step of carefully isolating this unit's internal audio and video circuit boards. This ensures ultra-high signal purity for rich, enveloping surround sound with all your movies, music, TV shows, and video games. And cutting edge decoding delivers the master-quality sound that comes with most of today's Blu-ray discs.

Bluetooth® and HD camcorder friendly

Add Marantz's Bluetooth receiver and play music wirelessly from your compatible cell phone or computer from up to 30 feet away. Marantz's own M-DAX™ audio expansion circuitry recognizes the frequencies that get lost in compressed music files and restores them for better sound. And a front-panel HDMI input makes watching your latest home video a simple matter. Even when the receiver is off, the audio and video pass right through the onto your connected HDTV.

Setup simplicity

Marantz uses Audyssey MultEQ® Auto Calibration to take the hassle out of speaker configuration. Just plug in the included microphone and place it in up to six listening positions. The NR1403 uses a series of test tones to balance speaker levels and fine-tune the delay and equalization settings for each speaker. The result is optimized home theater performance for your specific speakers and room. And Audyssey Dynamic Volume monitors the system to cut those surprise bursts of volume from commercials down to size.Plus, this receiver comes with a built-in first-time setup assistant that walks you through the process step by step.

    Audio Features

5-Channel Discrete Amplifier: The Marantz NR1403 is equipped with a power amplifier that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. The 5 channel amplifier is rated at 50 watts with 2 channels driven (20-20kHz, 8-ohms, 0.08% THD).

High Current Power Supply: The Marantz NR1403 AV surround receiver employs a high current linear power supply with an EI core power transformer for high-quality sound playback.

Isolated Audio Circuit Board: The carefully-optimized audio signal path rests on a separate circuit board for maximum performance as well as isolation from interferences generated by high speed video processing.

24-bit/192-kHz DACs: The Marantz NR1403 utilizes a 192 kHz/24 bit D/A converter on each of the unit's five channels for exceptional sound quality. The 192kHz sampling and 24-bit word length capabilities of the DACs allows you to play high-resolution recordings and hear the increased clarity, detail and dynamic range of those recordings.  The NR1403 is equipped with various surround modes to reproduce a variety of surround sound effects, according to the content of the source to be played. The receiver features Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital, and DTS decoders.

Audyssey Technology: The NR1403 features a full package of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics.

    • Audyssey MultEQ: Audyssey MultEQ technology helps create an optimal acoustic profile for your home theater. Using the included setup microphone, Audyssey MultEQ measures sound levels and adjusts speaker configuration accordingly, making setup fast and easy. This room acoustic measuring and correction system analyzes (via the included microphone) the audio characteristics of your speaker system and your listening environment at up to 6 measurement points and automatically tailors the sound for top audio fidelity. You can set the Audyssey MultEQ to one of the following modes.
      • Audyssey: Optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics.
      • Audyssey Bypass L/R: Optimizes all speakers except front left and right.
      • Audyssey Flat: Optimizes frequency response of all speakers to flat.
      • Manual: Adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings; adjust from -20 to +6 dB at 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz.
      • Off: Turns equalizer off.
    • Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are heard clearly. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), Midnight (high), or off.

Digital Signal Processing (DSP): The Marantz NR1403 incorporates advanced 32-bit digital signal processing circuitry (ADSP21487) for powerful and highly accurate surround sound reproduction.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the AV receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). Even though the AV receiver will decode 7.1channel surround sound (via HDMI), it will only output 5.1ch surround, because it lacks Surround Back channel speaker outputs.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust:
      • Panorama: Broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu.
      • Dimension: Allows you to move the sound field forward or backward.
      • Center Width: Allows you to adjust the width of the center channel.
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 7 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).

Stereo Modes: The Marantz NR1403 surround receiver also provides two-channel stereo and multi-channel stereo playback, as well a virtual surround from two stereo speakers.

    • 2CH Stereo: This is the mode for playing in 2-channel stereo; bass and treble can be adjusted and sound is output from the front left and right speakers, along with a connected subwoofer.
    • Multi-Channel Stereo: This mode lets you enjoy stereo sound from all speakers.
    • Virtual Speaker: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or headphones.

Direct Modes: The Marantz NR1403 offers two Direct sound modes which offer high-quality sound by bypassing the receiver's DSP & video circuitry.

    • Source Direct: In this mode the 2ch audio signal is played in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Multichannel audio signal is played in its original form, without any tone processing.
    • Pure Direct: This mode is for playback in higher sound quality than in Direct mode. The display and analog video circuitry are turned off to minimize the possibility of any noise being added to the signal.

M-DAX: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio) and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The M-DAX function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.

HT-EQ: The tonal balance of a film soundtrack will be excessively bright and harsh when played back over audio equipment in the home. This is because film soundtracks were designed to be played back in large movie theater environments. Activating the receiver's HT-EQ feature when watching a film made from movie theaters corrects this and restores the correct tonal balance.

Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.

Level Adjustments:  The NR1403 provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Volume Settings: The NR1403 offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0dB (80), -10dB (70), or -20dB (60) to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Turn-On Volume: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Tone Control: You can adjust the receiver's Bass and Treble (+/-6db) independently to suit your listening taste or room acoustics.

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Marantz AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Digital Inputs: There is 1 optical digital input and 1 coaxial digital input on the receiver's rear-panel. The inputs accept digital audio signals from a compact disc, DVD, or other digital source component. You can designate the input for each digital input according to your component.
    • Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding-post speaker terminals for all speaker channels (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R). The binding posts can accept bare wire, pin-connectors, and single banana plugs. The terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs. The collar surrounding the binding post terminals prevent the use of spade connectors. You can connect 6-8 ohms speakers.
    • Preamp Outputs: The NR1403 home receiver is fitted with 3 preamp outputs (Front L/R, Mono-Sub).
      • Front Pre-Out: The AV receiver is equipped with a pair of Front Left/Right Pre-Outs, so you can separately power the front speakers with an amplifier.
      • Mono-Sub Pre-Out: The AV receiver features a mono-subwoofer preamp output (LFE) to connect a powered subwoofer for a complete 5.1 channel surround sound.
    • Headphone Output: The receiver features a 1/4" stereo headphone jack on its front panel for connecting a pair of optional headphones. The unit's speakers will automatically be turned off when a set of headphones are connected.

AM/FM Tuner: The Marantz AV receiver features a built-in AM/FM tuner with 56 station auto-preset memory tuning. You can also set your presets manually. You can even label these presets. In addition, you can even directly tune in a frequency using the receiver's remote control.

    Video Features

HDMI (v1.4a): With six HDMI v.1.4a inputs (5 rear/1 front), the NR1403 allows you to route multiple high-definition devices--like game consoles and Blu-ray players--to your TV. It also allows you to connect all of your devices to your TV with a single HDMI cable (via its HDMI monitor output), reducing cable clutter. The HDMI inputs are assignable to different input sources. They support HDCP copyright protection and are compatible with 3D signals, ARC, Deep Color, xvYCC technology, Auto LipSync, and HDMI control.

3D Pass-Through: With the advent of 3D media, it is important to own a receiver that recognizes 3D video signals. The NR1403 is able to pass through 3D signals from your Blu-ray player, ensuring that the 3D effect doesn't get lost in translation. It also recognizes signals from 3D television broadcasts. By connecting a 3D-compliant Blu-ray disc player and 3D-compliant TV to the NR1403, you will have a 3D home theater where you can enjoy high-definition sound and video on a level you've never experienced before.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The NR1403 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.

Auto LipSync: This feature automatically compensates for the timing shift between the audio and video of the receiver. If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When enabling the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function, regardless of whether the AV receiver is "On" or in "Standby" both audio/video streams from an HDMI input will be output to your television, via the receiver's HDMI monitor output. You can select between three HDMI through function modes.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input (1-6) for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
    • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features two composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. You must connect the receiver to your TV via composite video to view incoming video from the receiver's composite inputs.

Note: There are no component video inputs or outputs.

Video Mode: You can select between 3 video processing settings.

    • Auto: Processes video automatically based on the HDMI content information.
    • Game: Always processes video appropriate for gaming content.
    • Movie: Processes video normally.

Video Select Function: You can switch the video input source on the receiver while listening to a different audio signal.

I needed a high-quality, low-profile A/V receiver for a 3.1 setup with a TV. Previously, I was using the built-in sound bar on the TV with a sub. The sound from the previous setup was OK, but I always knew it could be better. I'm now using the Marantz with Polk TL2 L/R fronts, a TL3 center, and a Polk sub. The sound is excellent. Dialog from movies and TV is clearer and the separation of frequencies is much improved. I can hear sounds I never knew were there before. Music sounds 100% better with the Marantz. I can listen to MP3s or Pandora and it sounds like the musicians are in my living room. I didn't bother to install the rear surrounds because it would have required running long lengths of wire over the ceiling. I have a 5.1 setup in an office and I've never been very impressed with the sound that comes from the rear channels anyway. The Marantz is in a small living room and the 3.1 system completely fills the room with sound. Installing the Marantz was very easy. I would recommend getting some banana plugs because they make connecting the speakers a snap. The on-screen HDMI menus are very user friendly and configuration options are plentiful. You can plug in the Audyssey mic and let the receiver configure everything, you can manually configure, or you may use a combination of the two.
    Pros:
high-quality, low profile, HDMI on-screen setup, aesthetics
    Cons:
    none

    Nice but.....

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To provide some background I've been an audiophile since my late teens and sold high end audio in the 70's. I bought this receiver along with a pair of PSB 5's, C4, and Infinity PS38 with the Samsung BD-F7600 Blue-Ray. This was for a vacation home and my original intent was to have decent 2-channel stereo for CD's but thought it would be nice to enhance the dialogue on our Panasonic plasma panel for movies and HD broadcast. The Crutchfield rep steered me toward this 3.1 system but in the end I had problems getting the receiver to work with 2 brand new Comcast HD boxes with one being a DVR as neither box worked reliably with the Marantz using HDMI. After a week of technical support calls, changing cables, boxes, etc. I said enough. Part of my discontent also centered with the Marantz Pure-Direct 2-channel performance as CD's from the Samsung Blue-Ray through the Marantz sounded processed and muddy. I don't know if this was the Samsung or the DAC in the Marantz but definitely not audiophile quality. There were also annoying random static sounding clicks or pops in quiet passages that were not evident when the Samsung was connected to the Panasonic panel via HDMI and played through the internal speakers. After using Audissey to set levels my wife and I watched a few movies and several HD content shows and frankly, found the dialogue easier to understand using the Panasonic speakers so it went back. I'll blame Comcast for the connectivity issues - a disfunctional company.
    Pros:
Easy to set up, nice form factor, lots of adjustment and functionality for the price.
    Cons:
Not for someone looking for good quality 2-channel reproduction from CD's even in "Pure-Direct".

    Marantz NR1403 Receiver

Written By dc, Morro Bay on Sunday, February 02, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace a 16 year old Yamaha 7.1. It was no longer viable with todays technology. This Marantz exceeded my expectations, could not be happier. I love the lower profile and weight. With HDMI, the setup was too easy. I have it hooked up with DISH, ROKU & Samsung Blu-Ray . The sound & video quality is brillant! This particular unit has exactly what I wanted and for the price, which is a hundred less than what paid for the Yamaha 16 years ago, I cannot say enough about it. Just a note, know that I am no techie, but I did read the instructions, and for me this was very easy.

    Pros:
I think the beside the extremely easy set-up, would be the Audyssey Setup. I have a very strange speaker arrangement. But using the setup microphone, I was able to easily manipulate how I wanted the speakers to sound, and it only took a few minutes. Again BRILLANT!!!!!
    Cons:
    None for me.

Wonderfully easy to set up and use. Sound quality is great with ample but not overwhelming wattage. The lower height of the Marantz works well in my situation. The control is refreshingly uncomplicated. This unit replaces a Pioneer receiver which lost power in the left channel. The Marantz provides better sound than the Pioneer and my previous Denon. The audyssey feature worked great and set up the Marantz in just a few minutes. It even caught that one speaker was out of phase. I am very pleased with the Marantz.
    Pros:
Great sound and ease of use
    Cons:

    Very happy with my NR1403

Written By Mr_T, Edmond, OK on Monday, January 20, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced an aging, non-HDMI Onkyo AV receiver with the Marantz NR1403. Several things attracted my attention. First, it has plenty of HDMI inputs for my needs which are primarily Dish DVR, Sony Blu-ray, and Roku device. The NR1403 lacks analog inputs for our Wii's RGB, but I knew that going in. HDMI adapters for the Wii are pretty easy to find.

Although the two digital audio in jacks on the back are labeled CBL/SAT (Coaxial) and TV AUDIO (optical), they are in fact available to map to any of the sources. My TV is too old to support ARC via HDMI, but it does have a coaxial digital audio out. So I used that to return TV audio to the receiver. But we so rarely watch broadcast TV, that I'm not sure why I even bothered.

The presence of separate DVD and Blu-ray HDMI inputs seemed redundant. You generally have either one or the other, and since Blu-ray plays regular DVDs, I'm not entirely sure why you would want to have both.

The guided Audyssey MultEQ along with the included mic was mega-cool. The mic has a tripod mount, and I took advantage of that to put the mic at head level at six different listening locations during the setup.

I wanted simplicity, and the NR1403 delivers with an uncanny example of "less is more". The dead simple remote passes the wife test. I didn't want or need one with a gazillion buttons on it. Being able to make my inputs show up as "DISH" and "DVD" and "ROKU" on the front panel is nice.

I'm really quite happy with the NR1403!
    Pros:
Audyssey MultEQ setup with included mic, assignable digital audio inputs, input labeling, input masking, simple remote, plenty of HDMI including one in front, not obnoxiously tall like most AV receivers, runs only slightly warm to the touch versus scorching with others, discrete amps for each channel, does more with 50 W per channel than my old Onkyo did with twice the power, beveled edges on front panel match exactly the front panel profile of my Dish Hopper with Sling.
    Cons:
Doesn't pass 4k which really isn't a big deal to me for many years to come, no network or streaming which is also not a big deal to me because that's why I have the Roku.

Very easy to set up -- the microphone feature to automatically set up the speakers is very helpful -- volume is more than loud enough and sound is very Clean. The remote cant be any easier to use and the compact design lets it fit almost anywhere
    Pros:
Microphone set up for Speakers -- ease of over all setup -- clean sound -- plenty of HDMI connection
    Cons:
the only one I can think of is that there is not second or ( remote ) set of speaker connection

Didn't know what I was missing

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At one point in my life I was really into the audio game but now I want something easy that sounds good and I am very happy with the Marantz NR1403. I had an old Kenwood which I thought was pretty good and the only reason I upgraded was the ability to switch HDMI inputs to a common cable to a new wall-hung flatscreen. But the difference I got in audio was like night and day. I'm using the same Bose speaker set-up that I had before but the sound that I get now is great, so much better than before. The speaker set up was very easy although the result did say that all four speakers were out of phase. I may check into this later although the manual did say that in some cases they would report an out of phase condition when everything was OK. Since I think it sounds great, I may not even worry about it. One thing I noticed was that the volume setting on the Marantz is a lot higher that the old receiver setting as others have commented on. On the old receiver the normal volume setting was just cranked not even a quarter of a turn where on the Marantz the normal setting is between 45% and 60%. Doesn't really make much difference unless you're into blowing out speakers or walls. Very happy with this unit.
    Pros:
Great sound, easy speaker set-up with great results.
    Cons:
At least in my case, volume setting is quite a bit higher ... but who cares?

I bought this receiver to replace my stereo only Yamaha RX-397 driving a pair of Paradigm Atom Monitor V5. I was surprised after reading all the positive reviews re the NR-1403 at how unimpressed I was with my initial listen. Even after running the Audyssey calibration the music was flat and bright. I like everything else about this receiver but I can't accept its lack luster fidelity. Its going back.

Form factor Price Easy to use controls
    Cons:
    flat and bright sound

The Marantz NR1403 is great for the price. I have not purchased my speakers yet for this unit, therefore I am using my old Cambridge Soundworks DTT3500 5.1 cube speakers temporarily . I cannot believe how much better this receiver makes them sound even though they are 12 years old and not the highest quality. Can't wait to get a good set of speakers for this thing! Also, I am using this unit with my HTPC mainly and have found it to be very compatible. I love the HDMI pass through. This way I can still see my computer screen without the unit being on.
    Pros:
Slim, good power, a multitude of sound modes, plenty of HDMI inputs and just plain sounds great.
    Cons:
Could have used at least one analog output

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I am very happy with this product. It is smaller than most and was relatively easy to set-up. I enjoy the simplicity. But if you have legacy analogue devices in addition to a full complement of digital, you may run short of inputs. Also, 50w/channel may not be powerful enough depending upon your speaker system.
    Pros:
Design and ease of use. Easy set-up.
    Cons:
Hooking up older, analogue devices is challenging and requires "workarounds". Also, could be more powerful.

    Very Impressed

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Coming from a vintage set-up, Sansui 9090 (110wpc) and Original Advent Loudspeakers, I was skeptical if this Marantz would reach the volume and sound quality I desire. I took a chance on it because of Marantz's stellar reputation and because I wanted to integrate digital sources in to my home stereo/theatre with out spending money on a DAC or external remote or fancy HDMI hubs that would integrate my old Sansui. This NR1403 was cheaper than other less straight forward options.

The Audio: This little unit has no problems at all driving four very efficient Advent Loudspeakers. They're stacked with the top pair inverted and I listen to music in Multi Channel Stereo, often at very loud volumes and they do not clip. From Vinyl to Cassette to MP3, over all the sound is a little bright, but the NR1403 on-board EQ helps remedy that. I wish I could run all 4 speaker in "Pure Direct" but am unable to do so, at least not on media that was made in Stereo/Mono aka most music (at least the old stuff). I sometimes move the top pair from the front and use as surrounds, sounds great for movies and games! I think I will purchase a vintage power amp to run with this for listening to analog music (pure direct should work with that setup)

    The Video:

Works perfectly. This is my first AVR but I have no complaints here. Easy to set-up, easy to switch sources, and nice (essential) that it remembers settings for each source.

Unit is handsome too, looks nice next to vintage Marantz 5220
    Pros:
Good Looks, Great Sound, Great Price, no frills AV Receiver where it seems like equal care was put in to Video AND Audio. Upgradable with Pre-Out. Pure Direct is a superb feature.
    Cons:
In my experience sound was a little bright at loud volumes and I wish I could run 4 speakers in Pure Direct. Both of these cons though I wouldn't hold against Marantz. Just a couple things lacking for what I want in my listening, I'll need to spend some time and money to correct these cons. And who cares about no phono input, out-board phono pre-amps are far superior. I'd rather have a tape-loop on this thing, but in this day and age it would be a ridiculous expectation.

Great receiver for apartment living, much less ugly and space consuming than competitors but still provides a good number of HDMI ports. The remote is also much less complicated to use than others I have experienced. If you are using all modern hardware, this is all you need, port-wise however there is no phono port despite the resurgent popularity of records but that appears to be an industry-wise issue.
    Pros:
Design, easy setup and calibration using included mic.
    Cons:
Lack of phono support- you'll need to add a preamp to play records.

I have limited space...a Cherry wood Thomasville Entertainment center w/2 side glass drs bookcases...bought almost 20 years ago. The Denon S-102 system( from Crutchfield) bummed out...CD didn't load. The guts of the new system is the Marantz NR 1403 fits nicely into a small space...I can only have a 32" flat screen in the main unit. I added 2 Cambridge Audio Minx 11 w/stands & monster cable with gold connectors...and stands...a little work to get the wires though the stands. Well worth the effort! With this is a Yamaha BDS673 & Infinity PS38, Sub Woofy...all connected with HDIM...as opposed to what? The set up was easy and flawless...one cable to the sub to the receiver. All are unbelievable in small space...the response is crisp, clear ....the sub adds a nice touch after tweeking the room. The Marantz has easy HDIM hookups...and great FM response! You will be BLOWNED away from the Minx...4" square. The Yamahammer produces great blue-ray...if your into westerns try " The Long Riders." I am an old time MT Banjo Clawhammer musician....this system also produces great Jazz, Classical & rock...try "Rumours" on this....incredible! If you need a awesome system in small space & limited room area...you just found it....if you don't like it, I'll buy it, well, not really , but that it sounds good. Thanks to KRAMER & BOB....and Crutchfield service, it was here in 3 days!
    Pros:
Great sound...easy setup! Kramer listened to all my needs!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product to replace a 12 year old Denon AVR 2700. While it has less watts than the Denon, it isn't a problem. I purchased the Marantz NR 1403 after purchasing a Oppo BDP-105 and realizing my old Denon wouldn't process the digital signal. I'm mostly a music person but wanted to integrate my home theater system into my 2 channel system (VAC Avatar) using the HT by-pass built in to the VAC which I did with the Denon. The only thing I drive with the Marantz is the center, rear surrounds and the sub. I had to have something that had a pre-out to drive the front L & R through the VAC. I had a few challenges setting it up but after working with it a while and calling Marantz I was able to set it up. There are several features I like but the main one being I can drive my TV through the Marantz even with it turned off (using as a pass through). Maybe that feature is common but it allows more flexibility. The audio quality, while not up to par with the VAC, does a fantastic job at this price point and has the features I need for my system. It definitely has everything I need and produces a great sound as well. The only reason I give it a 4 instead of a 5 is because of the system I have it in which probably isn't fair however it's hard to give it a 5 given my comparison. It really is a great unit and I couldn't be happier with it. I would definitely recommend the unit!
    Pros:
Functionality, size, number of inputs, flexibility, sound quality, price point, pure direct
    Cons:
Power output (it's not bad just wish it was a little more)

I bought this receiver because of a suggestion by a Crutchfield adviser named Ringo. The very first movie my son and I watched with this receiver he said "it sounds like we are in a movie theater". We have watched 100's of movies with my older Onkyo receiver and he never even once mentioned the sound. After fine tuning the speakers I could not be happier with this product.

Wow! For such a low profile, I am quite impressed with the sound output of this receiver. I don't have a very large room so the lower power output didn't bother me. If you have a large room, it could be an issue. This system replaced a Yamaha receiver with twice the power output, but you would never guess it. I needed a slim A/V Receiver for my shelf space and this was the slimmest I could find. I can't imagine a better choice. It's slim, sleek and almost sexy with it's curved face. The TV screen setup display and included omni-directional microphone is genius, and idiot-proof. The sound is at least as good as the Denon or Sony I've owned in the past. Hard to imagine why 50 watts per channel isn't enough for some folks. Maybe if you're a closet DJ and need to fill your neighborhood with thumping dance music, this unit might not suffice. The connectivity is naturally geared toward HDMI so if you have a host of older components to hook up you might have to get creative. I'm no techie or audiophile but I know what sounds good to me, and this does. If I could wish for one more feature it would be an A/B speaker switch. HIghly reccomend this unit.
    Pros:
Easy to set up. Great looks. Great sound. Great physical dimensions.
    Cons:
I would like a second optical audio input and an A/B speaker switch.

50 watts per channel is more than loud enough if you have good cable from Monster, banana plugs for all connections, good speakers as from Infinity, and a powered sub. To the user who put a con is because there is no connection for the iPod, that is a PLUS. Apple products are garbage. Use a "Y" stereo from your headphone output. thats all you need. The sounds ESPECIALLY in DTS HD MASTER AUDIO is awesome!
    Pros:
Excellent sound, quality build for the money and easy setup!
    Cons:
    NONE

    Amazing receiver

Written By Brian, Mountain View, CA on Saturday, October 06, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is amazingly good - I am thrilled with it. If you are considering it, look no further. I replaced a 55 watt per channel HK receiver, and the Marantz 50 watt sound quality blows away the HK. This receiver would easily outperform any mainstream 100 watt per channel+ receiver, so don't let the power rating dissuade you. Even my wife (who is far from an audiophile) is blown away by the sound quality. It looks extremely sharp, including a uniquely slim profile. Set-up takes minutes thanks to an easy step-by-step "wizard" - you don't even have to glance at the manual. Breakthrough Audyssey technology equalizes the sound based on the positions where people will actually sit in the room - now that I have seen how well Audyssey works, I would never consider a receiver without it. Remote control is simple, functional, and nicely designed. I could not be happier with this product.
    Pros:
Excellent sound quality/clarity, sharp look, slim profile, easy set-up, Audyssey technology, plentiful HDMI inputs
    Cons:
Supports up to 5 speakers but not 7 speakers (only relevant if you have a 7-speaker setup)

Great Unit Despite Small Size and Modest Price

Written By Anonymous, Harold in New York on Friday, October 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

From my judgement, this small, modestly priced unit has virtually all of the features and performance to be found in much larger, more expensive units. A great improvement over its predecessor while maintaining its size and price. Very easy to set up by navigating its intuitive menues and sound is excellent, at least to my elderly ears. Front panel display is crisp and bright; remote has all the keys needed. So., why pay more for big clunkier units when most people could not rell the difference watching or listening?
    Pros:
    Performance, features, size, price.
    Cons:
A bit too automated. Would like easier ways to modify settings.

    Mostly happy

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My only disappointment is that it appears that I cannot watch a football game via the HDMI cable from the receiver while at the same time listen to a play-by-play via a digital connection from a DVD recorder.
    Pros:
Easy to set up. Compact profile is very nice.
    Cons:
    See above.

    Love it

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this receiver. The slim line fits into our small stereo cabinet, and it is very simple and easy to operate. For sound, it thumps. I see no reason to go with the 1603 which has minimal upgrades.
    Pros:
Sound. Ease of use. Size. Clean stylish design.
    Cons:
No iPod connection and the accessory adapter is expensive.

How does headphone surround sound processed audio on the Marantz NR1403 compare to SilentCinema on Yamaha RX-S600? I will be primarily listening to receiver on headphones. I've heard good things about SilentCinema but the Marantz is a bit cheaper and seems to be pretty highly rated. [ Caleb  Apr 12, 2014 ]

    • Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget. [ Krissy Staff  Apr 14, 2014 ]
Can you play an ipod nano with this? How does it hook up? [ Marc  Mar 07, 2014 ]
    3 answers
    • This is a great compact receiver however I was never interested in doing that but to my knowledge there is no direct connection for the ipod nano. There may be some adaptor cords available so you can connect it somehow. What I have done is put a ton of music on a flashdrive and my Samsung BluRay player has a USB port on the front of it. Of course the BluRay player is connected to the receiver so I can listen to music that way. [ JAMES   Mar 08, 2014 ]
    • You will probably need a dock to do that. What I do is play my music straight from iTunes on my computer to apple tv which is hooked to my receiver. Check with advisor to be sure about needing a dock. nice receiver I've been happy with it. [ SAM   Mar 07, 2014 ]
    • Yes any iPod model can be connected using an auxiliary cord. [ THOMAS P   Mar 07, 2014 ]
The pages lists product height as 4 & 1/8th inches? Is that the height of the metal casing, or the front-cover? Also, are the feet removable. My storage space is literally 4 & 1/8th inches tall, and if the feet are removeable, what would be the height without them? [ Justin  Jan 20, 2014 ]
    7 answers
    • the feet can come off, someone had to put them on. They probably won't be replaceable. [ CHARLES   Jan 23, 2014 ]
    • picked the 1403 because I needed a hdmi switching receiver that has pre- outs for the front L-R channels. I use two outboard amps for music w/ Martin- Logan electrostatics. The Dims on the receiver are correct @ 4 1/8 in. w/ feet that can be removed. Hope this helps..... [ CHARLES   Jan 22, 2014 ]
    • We had a similar space issue which is why we bought it. The 4&1/8 msrmt is very accurate. Without the feet it is 3.5 inches. It appears that the feet are removable as there's a screw in the center of each. I don't think you'll find a thinner unit. [ KATHRYN D   Jan 22, 2014 ]
    • Hey vents are top and bottom and thats it. [ C KENT   Jan 21, 2014 ]
    • The unit height is 4 1/8 from the bottom of the feet to top of case. Front cover and case about the same size. Front top might be up 1/16. Yes the feet come off. They are about 1/2" , but case goes down in the middle so you might gain a 1/4" with feet off. I wounld not recomend takeing them off. There are holes for ventaltion on the bottom and the top. I would have concerns on putting it in a tight area, for it may over heat. [ C KENT   Jan 21, 2014 ]
    • The tallest point is exactly 4&1/8" inches. The tallest point is not the metal chassis, but rather the plastic facefront, more specifically, the center section of the face; inspect the picture closely and you can see how it rises just a bit between the large round dials. The metal chassis sits just slightly lower than the facefront, at 4&1/16" Yes, the feet are removable, but the bottom is uneven and the unit would not sit well w/o the feet. The feet are 7/16" tall, you may be able to replace them with a smaller foot, but it would take experimentation to find a good replacement foot that exceeds the lowest point on the bottom, but is shorter than 7/16". Hope this helps. [ Christopher   Jan 21, 2014 ]
    • Hi Justin, although I'm not home right now to measure for you, I would strongly caution against fitting any audio or video component into a space that leaves no clearance above for proper ventilation. Even though my NR1403 runs only slightly warm to the touch, that would quickly escalate to damaging temperatures even during normal ops if there were no air gaps above below behind and on both sides. [ JAMES   Jan 21, 2014 ]
Will this device output audio and video through its HDMI and RCA outputs simultaneously so that two displays can be used? [ Rick Bentley  Jan 20, 2014 ]
    4 answers
    • Seems to work on mine.... [ CHARLES   Jan 23, 2014 ]
    • Patrick, I can't answer that question. I have a fairly simple hook-up and am only using the HDMI connection. Have not used the RCA jacks at all. I can tell you that overall I am very happy with the performance of this receiver. Jim [ JAMES   Jan 21, 2014 ]
    • Not sure. I only need one display. Contact Marantz to be sure [ KARL   Jan 21, 2014 ]
    • Sorry, but I haven't tried that, so I'm of no use to you. But the unit works just fine. BK [ BERNARD   Jan 21, 2014 ]
can i plug in my dish receiver and run it through the home theater receiver to plug that into my tv with a hdmi cable? [ mike  Jan 02, 2014 ]
    7 answers
    • I am not really sure, I do not have a dish. I do have ALL of my comments plugged into it thought via HDMI cables. Crutchfield guy helped with all the settings and this thing is awesome [ VINCE   Jan 08, 2014 ]
    • If your HDTV supports HDMI Cable with Ethernet that supports the ARC function then connecting to the NR1403 from the Dish receiver may work. See pg 9 & 10 of the User Manual for discussion. [ WAYNE   Jan 03, 2014 ]
    • yes. You can put several devices into the receiver then send the HDMI cable to the TV for all the devices. The remote lets you change each device. [ SAM   Jan 02, 2014 ]
    • Yes you can. That is the way I did it. I have my DirectTV Playstation 3 going into the receiver then out to the TV through a HDMI cable. And I have to say I love the Marantz NR1403 [ PAT   Jan 02, 2014 ]
    • Yes but only if you are using HDMI from the dish also. The unit only has HDMI inputs. It has one HDMI output. [ CESAR   Jan 02, 2014 ]
    • Sorry I unable to answer this question. I purchased this to use in a pretty basic 2 channel system, Plasma tv, cd/dvd player and Infinity set-top box. I am not using it for Blu-ray, Satellite, streaming, etc. So I cannot speak as to whether or not you can use it for what you wish. The manual is available online I believe, and it is very comprehensive. [ KEVIN R   Jan 02, 2014 ]
    • Yes [ PAUL A   Jan 02, 2014 ]
I need to make sure that this receiver can connection to all the following devices: An Old Turntable, Adriod Phone, DVD player, Wii system, cassette tape player wireless connection for playing music from Android Phone? [ mike  Nov 28, 2013 ]
    1 answer
    • This receiver is mainly designed for connection to HDMI sources. A quick call or chat with an Advisor should help you select a receiver that will allow you to connect all your devices. [ Jeff Staff  Nov 29, 2013 ]
