Slim down your home theater receiver

Most of us would like to be a little thinner. Less bulk can be a very good thing — even in a home theater receiver. That's certainly the case with the Marantz NR1605. You might think this slim-profile design means you have to sacrifice a lot of features. Nope. This receiver is packed with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, 4K upscaling for the latest Ultra HD TVs, multi-room audio capability, plenty of connections, and digital music choices galore. If you're worried about that 50-watt power rating, don't be. Marantz is known for producing amps that punch above their weight class, making this an excellent choice for small to medium-sized home theaters.

Smartphones, tablets, computers, and online music services all play here

If much of your music listening takes place in the digital domain, you'll be impressed with the NR1605's many options. Built-in Wi-Fi makes it easy to connect to your home network wirelessly. From there, you can play music wirelessly from networked computers and storage drives. Apple® users can use AirPlay to stream tunes from an iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, or a computer running iTunes®. Or connect your iPod or iPhone to the front-panel USB port. Android™ users will appreciate Bluetooth connectivity, so they're not left out of the smartphone and tablet fun. Spotify® and SiriusXM subscribers can listen to their favorite playlists or stations. Plus, there's built-in support for Pandora® and hundreds of free online radio streams. Into high-resolution music? The NR1605 can play files with resolution up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution as well as DSD files.

Add music to another room

The NR1605's seven-channel amplifier can be configured for two-room output. Assign the Surround Back channels to Zone 2 and you can send audio to a set of speakers in another room. For instance, while the kids watch a movie in the living room in 5.1-channel surround sound, you can relax on the porch and listen to Pandora — all controlled by this versatile receiver. You can also use those Surround Back channels for Front Height speakers or to bi-amp your main speakers for even better stereo sound.

Hit the ground running

A feature-packed receiver like the NR1605 is only as good as your ability to set it up and control it. That's another area where this receiver excels. Marantz's setup assistant guides you through all your connections and settings right out of the box. Just connect your TV with an HDMI cable and you'll be ready to get started. Once you're up and running, download the free Marantz Remote app for your Apple or Android device. It's an easy way to control your receiver over Wi-Fi, giving you an intuitive touchscreen interface to change sources, play digital music, and operate key features.

    This does it all

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's been almost 30 years since I've replaced a receiver. Though I needed help in getting the setup process to work, that had more to do with my lack of knowledge than with the process. I am still working on how the tuner identifies stations, but the ability to use Bluetooth usb and internet radio means I'm not in any hurry.

    Pros: Everything

Cons: The thing uses the same means to attach speaker wires as I had in my previous receiver--and I bought that in 1982. Cmon, we can do better than that.

    Not happy

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First receiver did not work correctly. Crutchfield was quick to exchange (Thanks Crutchfield!). But that wasn't the end. The replacement has a freezing issue requiring me to unplug it and then power it on again before any controls work. Then a few months into ownership, HDMI 1 input failed. Tried different devices, cables, system reset, etc. No go. Switched to HDMI 2. A few months later, video started stuttering. Tivo connected directly to TV was fine. Tried new cables, system reset, etc. No go. Now I'm on my last resort of using the optical input for everything. Could have done that with a $100 receiver. No service centers within 200 miles so I guess I am supposed to box it up and ship it to NJ for service. Not sure if I should do that or take this to a dumpster.

Pros: Great low profile. Nice looking. During the short time everything worked, it worked great.

Cons: Unreliable. Too many failures for a modern piece of electronics. And this was the second receiver!

A lot for a little package

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Delivers as advertised. User friendly, small stature, seems to function very well. Won't give a 5 until I've had it for a while (previous other brand receivers had reliability issues). Crisp, clear and with the new speakers, great sound.

Pros: Small stature, lots of power, user friendly

    Cons: None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver replaced the Marantz I bought about 10 years ago, just before the advent of HDMI. Well it was out there but I didn't have any. The HDMI switching is a big plus. I also liked how it led me through the setup process. But the best part of all is the ethernet connection. It actually connects to my NAS box, nothing has been able to do that. With the app on my phone I can be Mr DJ! I would recommend this receiver to anyone.

    Pros: Ease of setup

    Cons: Haven't seen one yet.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am again encountering audio issues with my second NR1605 receiver. About a month after receiving my first NR1605, it began experiencing issues where I would loss audio. The unit would not power down unless I physically unplugged the power cord. In contacting Crutchfield, their support person was puzzled by the issue as he found no details indicating such issues, though it was early in the products release and I had pre-ordered the NR1605. But no problem sending me a replacement unit, fast! Now, after receiving the replacement unit the issue has again reappeared and again oddly after a month or so of usage, though the frequency of the events is less than my first NR1605. It seems when I switch cable functions quickly (rewinding a show in progress, etc.) or I switch HDMI feed (in Netflix on the blu-ray and going back to cable) is when the issues most often occurs, but once it happened when switching cable channels. I am trying real hard to like the unit, but this issue if frustrating. Tonight I have just upgraded the latest firmware release, I haven't found details on what the firmware release addresses but I sure hope it's a fix for the audio issue.

Pros: Slim, easy setup and despite the issue above I really like the unit. Foremost, Crutchfield stands behind it products and customer technical support is excellent.

    Cons: Audio issues

    Great Reciever!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great reciever! It has good power. It is small. and the onscreen display is very easy to use. I would recommend the deremote app on your iphone to operate it. Way better then the actual remote.

Pros: Size, power, fuctions, inputs, on screen

Lot of functionality for little money

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After having my other Marantz receiver for 10 years it finally blew a channel I decided on this model because it was not as tall as my last and had built in wireless and Bluetooth. It is hands-down the best receiver for the money that I was willing to spend. Does everything I want to do anymore.

Pros: Bluetooth & Wireless built in. Priced below its value. Mobile App is great . Low profile and easy set up out of the box.

Cons: Horrible documentation and user manual.

Keeps Locking Up - Unplug is Only Fix

Written By CFH, Providence, RI on Saturday, August 23, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this unit for two weeks and it has locked up several times. You have to unplug it to reset it. When it locks up audio is gone, video pass through still works, the remote wont work, no unit controls will work including the power button. I replacement is being sent. Crossing my fingers as I have read of many others having the same issue.

    Pros: Sounds good.

    Cons: Locking up.

    Better Than Expected

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A receiver that does what anyone would need it to do in a home theater set-up. I needed a unit that was low profile and the Marantz fit the bill. It is superb sonically. There was not a lot of difference to my much more expensive audio components. Set-up was not too difficult. I was able to integrate the receiver in my set-up and have it online in less than an hour. I have used the 1605 now for three weeks and the only thing I have to complain about is its remote. I just wish the remote was backlit . Other than that, I am happy that I purchased the receiver.

Pros: Easy installation and good sounding.

    Cons: Remote could be better.

    Great AV Receiver

Written By JohnM, Plano, TX on Monday, July 14, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was finally able to set this up this past Saturday. It is amazing that the receiver is short (not tall like your typical AV receiver). I was disappointed that it was deeper than my previous Onkyo (as I have to set up on a shallow shelf) but was able to overcome this by taking the rubber feet from my Onkyo and setting the NR1605 on top of those. Really, this is my only gripe.

Setup was relatively easy - the hardest part was caused by above mentioned short shelf as it made it a challenge to get the speaker wires inserted in to the terminals. After that, it was on to the very easy on-screen set up. Before we knew, the boys and I were enjoying the sounds and video.

I am not using the Marantz iPad/iPhone app due to the negative reviews of it on the Apple Store. Instead I am using the DeRemote app which supports the NR1605.

I am happy to report that the HDMI switching time is quick. My Onkyo was to the point where it took 10-15 minutes for the Apple TV to finally show (worst case). Not so with the NR1605.

I have a 5.1 setup and it sounds great. My TV is a Samsung 55" LED and the video likewise looks great.

    I'm happy with my NR1605.

Pros: - Easy setup - Sounds good - Video looks good - Unit looks good

Cons: - While this is a low profile unit, don't expect it to be any shallower than conventional units

7-Channel Discrete Amplifier: The Marantz NR1605 is equipped with a power class AB amplifier that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. The 7 channel amplifier is rated at 50 watts with 2 channels driven (20-20kHz, 8-ohms, 0.08% THD).

Amplifier Assignment: The NR1605's seven discrete amplifier channels can be configured to accommodate your type of home theater setup.

    • Surround Back: The AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front, Center, Surround , and Surround Back for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx 7.1ch playback (no second zone).
    • Zone2: The NR1605's amplifier channels can be configured as Front, Center, Surround, and Zone 2 for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch PCM playback in the second zone.
    • Bi-Amp: The AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front Bi-Amp, Center, and Surround for Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II 5.1ch playback in the main zone (no second zone). Bi-amping the front speakers achieves higher-quality sound.
    • Front B: The AV receiver's amplifier channels can be configured as Front, Center, Surround, and Front B for 5.1ch playback in the main zone and 2ch playback of the same source in a second room (not Zone 2).
    • Front Height: The receiver's amplifier channels can also be configured as Front, Front Height, Center, and Surround for Dolby Pro Logic IIz 7.1ch playback (no surround back or second zone speakers).

Isolated Audio Circuit Boards + High Current Power Supply:  The carefully-optimized audio signal path rests on a separate circuit board for maximum performance as well as isolation from interferences generated by high speed video processing. The Marantz NR1605 AV surround receiver also employs a high current linear power supply with an EI core power transformer for high-quality sound playback.

24-bit/192-kHz DACs: The Marantz NR1605 utilizes a 192 kHz/24 bit D/A converter on each of the unit's seven channels for exceptional sound quality. The 192kHz sampling and 24-bit word length capabilities of the DACs allows you to play high-resolution recordings and hear the increased clarity, detail and dynamic range of those recordings.

Digital Signal Processing (DSP): The Marantz NR1605 is equipped with a high-resolution Analog Devices (ADSP21487) 32-bit Digital Signal Processor (DSP). All elements of the Surround Processor are optimized to the highest standards by the use of selected high performance and discrete components, particularly the A/D and D/A converters and the sophisticated DSP surround decoder. The NR1605 is equipped with various surround modes to reproduce a variety of surround sound effects, according to the content of the source to be played. The receiver features Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, DTS and DTS-HD decoding; as well as offers Dolby Pro Logic II (x/z) audio processing.

Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Audyssey Silver: The Marantz NR1605 features the "Silver" suite of Audyssey audio technologies for optimal sound quality. Audyssey Dynamic Volume offers real-time volume adjustment, while Audyssey DynamicEQ improves your system's surround effects during low volume levels. Audyssey MultEQ automatically sets speakers to suit your room's listening environment and the speakers' characteristics.

    • Audyssey MultEQ: Using the supplied measurement microphone, the MultEQ function provides true in-room acoustical measurement for all of the speakers in the room, including the subwoofer, and then automatically generates multiple high resolution digital filters that combine to provide the smoothest in-room response from your speaker system. You can set the Audyssey MultEQ to one of the following modes.
      • Reference: Optimizes the crossover point, output level, delay time, and equalization of all speakers based on speaker frequency response, speaker location, and room acoustics.
      • L/R Bypass: Optimizes all speakers except front left and right.
      • Flat: Optimizes frequency response of all speakers to flat.
      • Manual: Adjusts the tonal quality for each speaker individually using the manual equalizer settings; adjust from -20 to +6 dB at 63 Hz, 125 Hz, 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, 4 kHz, 8 kHz, and 16 kHz.
      • Off: Turns equalizer off.
    • Audyssey Dynamic EQ: Audio engineers mix music and movie soundtracks at reference levels much louder than typical home listening levels. At lower volumes the human ear perceives sound differently; voices change, bass dissipates, and the surround effect becomes less enveloping. Dynamic EQ adjusts the frequency response curve based on volume to maintain consistent bass output, octave-to-octave balance, and surround impact, resulting in rich sound at any volume. You can set the Dynamic EQ to 0, 5, 10, or 15 dB.
    • Audyssey Dynamic Volume: Audyssey Dynamic Volume solves the problem of large variations in volume level between television programs, commercials, and between the soft and loud passages of movies. Dynamic Volume addresses the issue of commercials that are too loud and movie soundtracks with vast differences between soft and loud passages; the results are more intelligible dialogue, loud passages maintain impact, and soft whispers are heard clearly. When the volume level changes, Dynamic EQ also adjusts the frequency response to maintain sound quality. You can set the Dynamic Volume to Day (low), Evening (middle), Midnight (high), or off.

Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:

    • Dolby Pro Logic II Music Settings: While listening in the Dolby Pro Logic II Music format, there are three further enhancements you can adjust - Panorama (broadens the front stereo image to the surround speakers to provide a wraparound effect, especially effective when there is limited output from the surround channels, panorama can be turned on/off in the menu), Dimension (allows you to move the sound field forward or backward), and Center Width (allows you to adjust the width of the center channel).
    • Center Image: In the Neo:6 Music mode, the Center Image feature adjusts the output of the left and right channels relative to the center channel, allowing you to make the center channel more or less dominant as needed. This improves the image of the center channel, especially when the listener is off-center. Adjustment varies from 7 (nothing subtracted from the L/R channels) to 0 (L/R channel output is cut in half).
    • Height Gain: Adjust the volume (Low/Mid/High) of the Front Height channels in Dolby Pro Logic IIz.

Stereo Modes: The Marantz NR1605 surround receiver also provides two-channel stereo and multi-channel stereo playback, as well a virtual surround from two stereo speakers.

    • 2CH Stereo: This is the mode for playing in 2-channel stereo; bass and treble can be adjusted and sound is output from the front left and right speakers, along with a connected subwoofer.
    • Multi-Channel Stereo: This mode lets you enjoy stereo sound from all speakers.
    • Virtual Speaker: Enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or headphones.

Direct Modes: The Marantz NR1605 offers two Direct sound modes which offer high-quality sound by bypassing the receiver's DSP & video circuitry. Source Direct Mode provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct Mode goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.

Audio Enhancements: The Marantz NR1605 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

    • Cinema EQ: Cinema EQ gently softens the upper treble range of movie soundtracks to reduce possible harshness and improve clarity.
    • M-DAX: Compressed audio formats such as MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio) and MPEG-4 AAC reduce the amount of data by eliminating signal components that are hard for the human ear to hear. The M-DAX function generates the signals eliminated upon compression, restoring the sound to conditions near those of the original sound before compression. It also corrects the sense of volume of the bass to obtain richer sound with compressed audio signals.
    • Dynamic Range Compression (DRC): Motion picture soundtracks have tremendous dynamic range (the contrast between very soft and very loud sounds). For listening late at night, or whenever the maximum sound level is lower than usual, Compressing the dynamic range allows you to hear all of the sounds in the soundtrack with reduced dynamic range. DRC works when playing program sources recorded in Dolby Digital or DTS.
    • Tone Control: You can adjust the receiver's Bass and Treble (+/-6db) independently to suit your listening taste or room acoustics.

Level Adjustments:  The NR1605 provides the following level adjustments.

    • Source Level: This function adjusts the playback level of the currently selected input source's audio input. Use this feature if there are differences in the input volume levels between different sources. You can correct the playback level of the audio input from -12 to +12dB.
    • Dialogue Level: You can adjust the output level (+/-12dB) to clarify the dialogue output from the center channel.
    • Subwoofer Level: You can set the receiver's subwoofer output level (+/-12dB) independent from the other speaker levels and system's main volume.

Volume Settings: The NR1605 offers the following volume settings.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display an Absolute volume scale (0-98) or Relative volume scale (-79.5 to 18dB).
    • Volume Limit: You can set a maximum volume level of 0dB (80), -10dB (70), or -20dB (60) to limit the receiver's total volume output.
    • Turn-On Volume: You can define the volume setting that is active when the power is turned on (0, 1-98, -79 to +18dB, or Last)
    • Mute Level: You can set the amount of attenuation for the audio muting circuit; -40dB or -20dB below current volume, or full mute (sound turned off entirely).

Audio Inputs/Outputs: The Marantz AV receiver offers a variety of analog and digital audio inputs/outputs.

    • Assignable Digital Inputs: The NR1605 features an optical digital (Toslink) input and a coaxial digital input. Each input can be assigned to any of the different input sources except Tuner.
    • Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding-post terminals for all speaker connections. The binding-post terminals can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and banana plugs (single only). The receiver will accept speaker impedances of 4 to 16-ohm.
    • Preamp Outputs: The NR1605 home receiver is fitted with 5 preamp outputs (Front L/R, Zone 2, Mono-Sub).
    • Headphone Output: The receiver features a 1/4" stereo headphone jack on its front panel for connecting a pair of optional headphones. The unit's speakers will automatically be turned off when a set of headphones are connected.

    Video Features

HDMI 2.0: The Marantz NR1605 AV receiver is fitted with eight HDMI 2.0 inputs (7 rear/1 front) and one HDMI 2.0 output to deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video signals. The HDMI 2.0 jacks support 4K/60Hz and 1080p video signals; as well as 4:4:4: Pure Color sub-sampling pass-through, another feature of the latest HDMI 2.0 specification. 3D video, ARC functionality, Deep Color (30/36 bit), x.v.Color, and auto Lip-Sync compensation is also supported via HDMI. The AV receiver's HDMI jacks support 2-channel and multi-channel linear PCM (up to 8-channel) and Bitstream (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc) digital audio formats.

    • 4K/60Hz Pass Through: 4K/60Hz Pass Through allows the NR1605 to receive ultra high-definition resolution video and pass the video signal to a 4K/60Hz compatible TV or display monitor. The receiver's front-panel HDMI input does not support 4K/60Hz.
    • 3D Ready: The NR1605 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games, and other 3D content through its HDMI (v.1.4) connections. 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be needed.
    • ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to your receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.
    • Deep/x.v.Color Support: The NR1605 also supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture.
    • LipSync: This feature automatically compensates for the timing shift between the audio and video of the receiver. If needed, the audio signal can be manually delayed to match the video signal; adjust from 0-200ms.

Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.

4K Video Upscaling: The AV receiver is equipped with a 4K video upscaler that allows standard definition (480i/480p) sources and high definition (720p/1080i1080p) sources to be upconverted to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels) for high definition video images from any video source. This lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the NR1605 and then connect to your HDTV with just a single HDMI cable.

HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When the AV receiver is in "Standby" mode and the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled, both audio/video streams from the receivers HDMI input will be output to your television, via the AV receiver's HDMI monitor output. Once the receiver is turned "On", only video will pass through the monitor output to your TV and the audio is directed to the receiver's speaker outputs.

    • HDMI Input: Selects the HDMI Input for which the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled.
    • Last: The HDMI Standby-Through function is activated on the input source selected at the time of setting the AV receiver to the "Standby" mode.
    • Off: The HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is disabled.

Advanced ISFccc Video Calibration: The NR1605 is certified by the Imaging Science Foundation to deliver top video quality, and the unit also features advanced ISFccc video calibration controls that allow for precision fine-tuning of the connected HDTV, even if it's not an ISF certified set. You can choose from a variety of Picture Modes - Standard, Movie, Vivid, Streaming, ISF Day, ISF Night, Custom, or Off. The Custom mode lets you manually adjust Contrast, Brightness, Saturation, Noise Reduction, and Enhancer (sharpness).

Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features three composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output. There is also two component video inputs (60MHz) and one component video output.

Video Select Function: You can switch the video input source on the receiver while listening to a different audio signal (iPod/USB, CD, Tuner, Network, or Bluetooth).

The Marantz NR1605 features a contoured front-panel that combines aluminum and glass-reinforced resins for maximum shielding, dimensional stability, and sophisticated styling. The front-panel is clean, precise, and inviting. Volume and input selection knobs flank a rectangular volume/source display.

On-Screen Menu w/ Setup Assistant (via HDMI): The AV receiver's on-screen menu provides quick information about your system's settings. You can easily make settings for your home theater system while viewing menus on the TV screen. Simple settings are enabled with the setting menus displayed on the TV screen. The Marantz NR1605 also features an on-screen Setup Assistant that provides easy-to-follow setup instructions. When you control the sound volume, the volume level is displayed on the screen, and when you switch the input source, the name of the input source is displayed. These menu displays can only be output to your TV via HDMI. If you connect the receiver to your television via only composite video, you will need to use the A/V receiver's front-panel display for menu and source adjustments.

Zone 2 + All Zone Stereo The Marantz NR1605 offers Zone 2 and All Zone Stereo functionality for playback of audio in two separate rooms of your home.

    • Zone 2: Zone 2 allows stereo audio playback of another source connected to the receiver in another room of your home via left/right RCA audio or speaker level outputs. The receiver's surround back amplifier can be reassigned to power a pair of speakers in Zone 2. When using the NR1605 to power speakers in a second room of your home, the main zone is restricted to 5.2-channels. When using the receiver's line output terminals for the second room, you need an additional amplifier to power those speakers; the main Zone of the receiver remains 7.2-channel. The volume of Zone 2 can be controlled by the Marantz receiver using either configuration or from your add-on amplifier when using the line-output.
      • Compatible Zone Sources: Only tuner, analog, USB/iPod, Bluetooth, and Network/AirPlay sources can be played in Zone 2. As for Network/AirPlay, USB/iPod, and Bluetooth sources; you cannot select different inputs for the main room and Zone 2. For example, if a Network source has been selected in the main room and then a USB is selected as playback source in Zone 2, the input in the main room will also change to the USB source. When listening to AM/FM radio, you cannot select different stations for the main room and Zone 2.
      • Incompatible Zone Sources: It is not possible to play the digital audio signals from the HDMI, Coaxial, or Optical terminals in Zone 2. Video cannot be sent to Zone 2.
    • All Zone Stereo Function: The All Zone Stereo function allows you to enjoy the AV receiver's Main Zone audio source in Zone 2 simultaneously (regardless of input audio signal types; analog or digital). During the All Zone Stereo, 2ch playback is automatically selected for all zones and each zone will play at the same volume level. This is useful when you want to enjoy the same music at the same time in multiple rooms during a get together or party.

Smart Select Functions: The NR1605 features four Smart Select function buttons on the front-panel and remote control that let you quickly choose your favorite sources, and the unit will remember your preferred audio settings for each input. The Smart Select functions can be assigned for each Zone.

Source Rename/Delete: You can change the display name (up to 8 characters) of a selected input source. If an input isn't being used, you can delete it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.

Eco Mode: Eco mode provides reduced power consumption, according to the actual volume level, and features an on-screen Eco mode bar graph that lets you see the power consumption savings in real time. You can also set the Eco mode to Auto, for continuous automatic power consumption reduction.

Timers: The receiver features a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Standby function.

    • Sleep Timer: This function allows you to automatically set the power to standby after a predetermined amount of time has passed; set the sleep timer up to 120 minutes in 10 minute increments.

Dual Backup Memory Function: This receiver stores its settings in a nonvolatile memory even when the main power supply is turned off. Using the Dual Backup Memory function, you can write settings information to another memory area to back up saved settings for recovery anytime as needed.

    • Personal Memory Plus: This function sets the settings (input mode, surround mode, HDMI output mode, MultEQ, Dynamic EQ, audio delay, etc.) last selected for the individual input sources.
    • Last Function Memory: This function stores the settings which were made before going into the standby mode. When the power is turned back on, the settings are restored.
Note: To prevent accidental operation of this unit, you can disable operation of the buttons on the front-panel.

    Bluetooth + Remote Control

Built-in Bluetooth: The Marantz NR1605 features built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR) with support for profiles A2DP 1.2 and AVRCP 1.4. You'll be able to wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry Windows PC, or Mac computer to the Marantz receiver. You will also be able to control basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip) using the receiver's remote control; advanced music operation will still need to be handled from your Bluetooth-enable device. Song/artist information (no Album Art) will be displayed on-screen via the receiver's HDMI connection to your TV. Up to eight Bluetooth-enabled devices can be paired with the receiver, but only one can be used at a time.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Marantz receiver.

The AV receiver will need to be connected to the same network as your Apple iOS or Android device. This free Remote App lets you control the Marantz A/V receiver's basic functions (power, volume, input, surround modes) from your mobile device. The multi-zone control page of the Remote App lets you adjust power, volume and input selection for all zones from a single screen (when applicable). You can even navigate the A/V receiver's network and Internet content from your compatible Apple iOS or Android device. For added convenience, there are eight customizable home screen short cut buttons that allow you to tailor the look and function of the Marantz Remote App to suit your needs.

IR Remote w/ HDMI Control: The Marantz AV receiver comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of this receiver and other HDMI-connected sources (via HDMI CEC). The AV receiver supports HDMI-CEC, which synchronizes the operation of this unit with other HDMI-CEC devices when connected via HDMI. When the receiver is connected to a HDMI-CEC compatible TV, they will turn ON/OFF together and you can use the TV remote to control the volume of the receiver. HDMI-CEC also provides playback functionality with other components, such as your Blu-ray player. For example, you can use the receiver's remote control to operate player functions like Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, or Stop.

Note: Not all HDMI-CEC compatible components and functions are guaranteed to work.

Remote Connections: The Marantz NR1605 is fitted with the following custom remote inputs/outputs.

    • Remote In/Out: These RCA input/output connectors allow you to connect the NR1605 to a Marantz component equipped with remote control (RC-5) terminals.
    • Flasher In: This 3.5mm input is used to control the NR1605 from an external key-pad (sold separately).
