Marantz PM-14S1 integrated amplifier

The PM-14S1's massive toroidal power transformer and discrete HDAM circuitry ensure clean sound and wide dynamic range.

The right stuff

Marantz has applied their decades of audio expertise to the PM-14S1's design. Their most advanced Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules are employed throughout the preamp and power amp sections to ensure recordings are re-created faithfully and dynamically. The huge, copper-wound toroidal power transformer and current feedback circuit work together to deliver clean, stable power that handles peaks in volume smoothly and accurately — and without distortion. Discrete circuitry, anti-vibration chassis reinforcement, new high-purity copper speaker terminals, gold-plated input connectors — it all adds up to sound quality that is uncompromised, uncolored and thoroughly irresistible.

Unique setup options

In terms of setup, most integrated amps are pretty straightforward: music comes in from your source and out to your speakers. But the PM-14S1 has some interesting configuration options. You can use it as a preamp and connect a separate power amp to the pre-outs. Or, you can connect a separate preamp to the Power Amp Direct inputs and use the '14S1 as a power amp. This is also a great way to add this amplifier's clean, detailed sound to the front channels of your compatible home theater receiver.

Features

Marantz HDAM Technology: Featuring discrete circuit components, as opposed to an integrated circuit, Marantz's exclusive HDAM technology preserves analog signal purity, delivering wide band audio with expansive dynamic range along with an inaudible noise floor. A total of 24 HDAM SA2 and SA3 units are employed in the phono, line-level, headphone output, pre-amp, and power amp stages.

High Quality Construction: The Marantz PM-14S1 integrated amplifier features a rigid chassis with a double layered bottom plate and aluminum die-cast chassis feet to resist any unwanted vibration. Its power supply features a massive 650 VA toroidal power transformer with oxygen free copper secondary windings, as well as high speed, high current Schottky Barrier Diodes in the rectifier stage for maximum headroom and operational stability.

Full Discrete High Current Amplifier: For compatibility with the widest range of speaker impedances, the power amplifier stages feature high current power output devices with current feedback technology. For maximum channel separation, each amplifier stage features segregated circuitry along with individual massive extruded aluminum alloy heat sinks with a large effective radiating area that provide fan-less and noise-less heat dissipation. The amplifier is rated at 90 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 140 watts per channel into 4 ohms, assuring high stability and wide dynamic range, even with lower impedance speakers.

Multiple Gold-Plated Analog Inputs/Outputs: In addition to the Phono and CD analog inputs, there are two additional line-level inputs, and two pairs of recorder input/output jacks that together let you connect multiple sources and recorders. There's also a power amp direct input that lets you use the PM-14S1 as a standalone stereo power amplifier for additional system configuration versatility, along with variable level stereo pre-amp outputs that let you connect the PM-14S1 to an external power amplifier. The analog input and output connectors are gold plated for optimum signal transfer and long term stability.

Flexible Configuration: The PM-14S1 provides maximum configuration flexibility, as it can be configured as a conventional stereo integrated amplifier, or set up with another PM-14S1 as a dual component four channel configuration for bi-amp operation, and it can also be paired with an A/V surround processor/pre-amp and used as a stereo power amplifier for the main left and right speakers in a home theater system via the Power Amp Direct inputs.

  • Floating Control Bus System: A Floating Control Bus System (F.C.B.S.) enables the user to connect up to four PM-14S1 units, making a diversity of applications possible with complete bi-amp and multichannel connections. Moreover, a ground loop is not formed among multiple PM-14S1 units connected, therefore sound quality is not adversely affected.
  • Bi-Amp Mode: Two PM-14S1s are connected by FCBS in bi-amp mode, enabling each to work as a monaural integrated amplifier.
  • Power Amp Direct Mode: In this mode, this unit works as a power amplifier. This mode will be useful in home theater systems

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The speaker outputs are binding posts that will accept single banana plugs, pin connectors, spade lugs (up to 0.575" wide), and bare wire (up to 11 gauge). The amplifier supports speakers ranging from 4-ohm to 8-ohm.

Dedicated Headphone Output: Employing Marantz's exclusive HDAM discrete modules, the headphone circuit delivers superb audio fidelity with the widest range of headphone types and impedances, including low impedance headphones.

Linear Volume Control w/ Tone Control + Pure Direct Mode:  The PM-14S1 incorporates a linear control volume which improve S/N ratio, enabling smooth control in ±0.5 dB steps across a 0 to -100 dB range. The PM-14S1 also features an adjustable tone control for adjusting bass (50Hz) and treble (20kHz) across a ±10 dB range. The volume level of the left and right channels can be trimmed in 0.5 dB steps across a 0.0 to -9.0 dB range. For the purest audio fidelity, the PM-14S1 is equipped with Pure Direct function, which bypasses unneeded audio circuits (including tone control) for the most straight-through signal path.

Front-Panel Display: This PM-14S1 integrated amplifier features a LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) to display the input source and volume level. Compared with other types of display panels, an LCD requires less drive power and generates less radiation noise, which minimizes any adverse affects on sound quality.

Remote Control: The included IR remote control can also be used to wirelessly operate the PM-14S1, as well as the matching SA-14S1 SACD player (642SA14S1, sold separately). The PM-14S1 features remote control input and output jacks for additional remote control configuration flexibility

Auto Standby Mode: The integrated amplifier will automatically switch to standby mode if the unit is not operated for 30 minutes when there is no audio signal input.

Q
whar is the amplifer class ? a class or ab class or d class ?
ayak  Apr 08, 2014
1 answer
A
I believe all Marantz Reference Class Integrated Amps are Class A. They are definitely not Class D (which designates Digital). I am very happy with my PM-14S1. It is a lower power version of the PM-11-S3.
