Our take on the Marantz PM5004

by Jim Richardson
Marantz

Everything you always wanted in a stereo receiver, except the radio

An integrated amplifier is essentially a receiver without a built-in AM/FM tuner. You get power to drive your speakers, audio controls, and inputs for music source components. Connect an iPod, a computer, a network music player, or any other device that can play Internet radio, and you may find you have no need for an AM/FM radio.

Legendary Marantz sound in a modestly powered integrated amp

Perfect for smaller systems in a den, bedroom, or dorm, the PM5004 lets you experience musical details you never before noticed on your favorite recordings, whether they're on LPs, CDs, or even high-resolution SACDs and DVD-Audio discs in stereo mode. You'll clearly discern the distinct voices of individual musicians, while the ensemble sound remains full and balanced.

To maximize audio performance, Marantz's engineers took extensive care with every aspect of the PM5004's design and construction. Audiophiles will appreciate touches like a source direct mode that bypasses the tone controls to provide the cleanest signal possible.

Ample flexibility for connecting your gear

back panel

This amp offers six audio inputs, including one for a turntable. Two sets of speaker outputs let you conveniently power a second pair of speakers in another room.

You also get a remote that gives you easy control of the amplifier plus other Marantz audio/video components in your system.

Features

2Ch Integrated Amp: The Marantz PM5004 is a two-channel integrated amplifier rated at 35 watts x 2-channels into 8-ohms and 45 watts x 2-channels into 4-ohms. This unit has a high-quality audio design such as a minimized signal path, use of high sound quality parts, and large power circuits; which is possible only in discrete audio components. The amplifiers themselves are custom-designed entirely with discrete components so you don't suffer any of the built-in limitations of off-the-shelf integrated circuits.

Current Feedback Amplifier: The Marantz PM5004 features current feedback design. This unit uses a high-speed current feedback amplifier circuit for its preamplifier and power amplifier so that signals from the your audio source can be amplified with high fidelity. This extraordinary circuit accurately tracks quickly changing, wide bandwidth musical signals for greater resolution of fine musical detail. The high-speed current feedback amplifier reproduces a natural sound space.

High-Power Output: This unit features a slim-line body, but utilizes a large power supply for dynamic music reproduction with high-power.

Input Buffer Circuit: The integrated amplifier features an input buffer circuit for high signal-to-noise ratio and high channel separation.

Aluminum/Glass-Reinforced Resin Front-Panel: The integrated amplifier's front panel uses a carefully chosen combination of aluminum and glass-reinforced resin to create a distinctive three dimensional appearance. Indirect reflecting blue LEDs indicating input selection, heighten its elegant appearance.

Controls

Master Power: A mechanical switch turns the main power on/off. When off, the remote has no effect. When on, the remote can be used to switch between on and standby.

Input Selector: A rotary knob is used to select the input source (Phono, CD, Tuner, AUX/DVD, Recorder 1/2,) for listening.

Tone Control: This unit has a tone control function for adjustment of bass (low frequency) and treble (high frequency) sound to produce your preferred sound.

  • Bass: A rotary knob to adjust the bass output; +/-10 dB @ 100 Hz.
  • Treble: A rotary knob to adjust the treble output; +/-10 dB @ 10 kHz.

Balance: A rotary knob to adjust the left/right balance.

Loudness: The Loudness features compensates for human hearing characteristics by boosting the bass and treble response at low volume levels to achieve a more pleasing tonal balance.

Speakers: These buttons turn the speaker output to the speakers connected to the Speaker System A/B terminals on the rear panel On and Off.

Source Direct: There is a Source Direct switch so you can bypass tone and balance controls for the shortest signal path from input to output. When source direct is engaged the bass, treble, and balance circuits are bypassed.

Remote Control: The supplied wireless remote will control the PM5004 and Marantz CD players, DVD players, tuners, and tape decks.

Connections

Speakers: The speaker system A and system B outputs are binding posts. They are not 5-way posts, but will accept  banana plugs (single/dual), pin connectors, and bare wire.

Line Inputs: The CD, Tuner, and Aux/DVD inputs are RCA connectors.

Recorder: Recorder 1 and Recorder 2 have RCA inputs and outputs.

Phono: The RCA phono input will accept moving magnet cartridges. There is a ground terminal beside the phono input.

Remote control: An RCA input and an RCA output are used with other compatible Marantz components using the D.BUS remote system, CD player, DVD player, Tuner, etc. This allows the included remote to control the other Marantz components.

Flasher In: This 3.5mm terminal is to control the unit from another zone with an optional keypad (sold separately).

Headphone: A standard 1/4" headphone jack is on the front panel. The speaker outputs are not automatically muted when you plug in headphones so the speakers must be manually turned off.

Marantz PM5004 Integrated. Amplifier

Written By McDonald, Seattle Area (East side) on Wednesday, December 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the 4th Amp in the house (Nakamichi, NAD racks are the others). This one is used in the music room for music sampling, recording playback, and general music listen running through monster cable to Klipsch RB61 II speakers set 34 inches up from the floor on custom home made stands. So far the sound is very clean and clear running primarily at low to mid volume.

The main purpose of this amp / speakers is to listen to specific instruments on playback as well as general music listening. The other components hooked up are Nakamich CR3a tape deck (yes, I still use this after 25 years), NAD Stereo Tuner, and laptop running sound though an external Sound Blaster X-Fi Pro running Cakewalk (Roland) recordings.

The volume is more that I'll need on this amp, and I like that at high volumes it is still very clean sound. I think it is a great amp for price.
Pros:
* Clean, clear sound. * Does not get very hot with other components sitting on top. * Clean, sleek, minimal lights, and I like the blue LED lights. * The loudness is about the right level, but don't really need it with the basic sound output.
Cons:
None so far.

Sounds like butter!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this amp for the sole purpose of using the phono input to push my pro-ject debut carbon turntable, and I am in love with the sound. Wow! Never underpowered, but am only pushing two infinity book shelve speakers. Buy it and love it!

The Sound I Was Searching For

Written By Danny B., Detroit, MI on Sunday, January 27, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I know... It's just another 5 star rated review, but take this from a VERY jaded stereophile who was perfectly happy with a vintage 80's Marantz receiver (a hand-me-down form my uncle) that recently began exhibiting signs of imminent failure. All I cared about was replacing the fantastic sound of the unit I was used to. My parents had an awesome Marantz back in the day so having grown up with, plus owning one myself, I knew this was the way to go. I have quality, vintage high sensitivity 8-ohm speakers with 10 in. woofers rated at 50 watts, so I suspected this Marantz PM5004, rated at 35 watts, would be a good match. Holy cow was I right, and this unit is definitely a step up from my old one. Listening to everything from the Beatles to classical, to death metal and techno; the sound stage has really opened up and bass is now more accurate and less loose and boomy. Movies in 2 channel also sound great. If your worried that it won't have enough power, check the sensitivity of your speakers. 90 dB or above should be enough to rouse the next door neighbors.
Pros:
Its a Marantz, and the price is right baby.
Cons:
It would have been nice to have some sort of LEDs on the front of the unit to indicate volume level. Accidentally woke up the family at 4 am a couple of times, but no real issue.

Excellent "old school" Amplifier

Written By Allen, Brooklyn, NY on Thursday, May 17, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

About a year ago I decided to totally upgrade my stereo system. I wanted that "vintage" sound [Sansui/Marantz] and ultimately purchased a 1971 Sansui receiver. All was well for about 3 months and the unit started giving me problems. I loved the way it sounded but my tech guy was unable to find the parts to fix it. During the 6 weeks that I was waiting to get my Sansui back someone told me about these modern Marantz Integrated Amps and how faithful they were to the classic Marantz sound. I must say that this is true. I absolutely love this amp. I'm a vinyl guy and the Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable that I bought sounds marvelous through this amp. The sound is rich, neutral-warm and very musical. I have a small studio apartment and this amp is plenty loud for my needs. If you like that "old school" Marantz sound and you don't want to mess with vintage stuff this unit is your answer. I've been listening now for about 6 weeks and the more this unit breaks in the sweeter it sounds. Lastly, if you like/need to sometimes listen at low volumes the loudness switch really fattens the sound in a beautiful way.
Pros:
Faithful to the legendary Marantz name.
Cons:
None!

Brings your speakers to life

Written By another music fan, Nevada on Tuesday, February 07, 2012

I bought this because I needed a amp for the PSB T6 tower speakers I bought. I tried out some cheaper amps and then I tried this. I was shocked at how much difference a quality amp can make my speakers were brought to life and actually sounded like they should. Instead of dead and lifeless with bloated bass. The 40 watts might make some think this is a low powered amp. Well most amps lie about their power you seen the Sony amp that says it 500 or 1000 watts but it's really like 2 watts. This for most home listening should be able to get plenty loud for anyone. Although those who like it really loud or have harder to drive speakers there is a the PM 6004 and PM 8004 that have more power. Marantz has a honest and uncolored sound so whatever your speakers character and the albums production is like you will be getting a honest take on it. Although I haven't tried them some say NAD is rolled off in the highs, Cambridge Audio is dry and overly analytical.Although I would like to try them out for myself. I will just stick with what is doing it's a job correctly driving the speakers and faithfully attempting sound reproduction. Not trying to change or add it's on sound flavor to the mix.

Pros:
Speakers come to life. Great improvement of sound versus cheaper 2 channel amps
Cons:
None. But I wish the North American market got the silver colored version like Europe and Japan get.

Awesome integrated amplifier

Written By JBizzle, Houston, Texas, USA on Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Excellent construction, very simple amp. If you can live without a center channel and surrounds, this is the way to go. Do not be nervous about the 35W rating; this thing has more punch than my 90s era Harman Kardon AVR45. I can feel the music now even at lower volumes. Outstanding quality.
Cons:
I wish this was 3 channel so I could have a center channel for TV and DVDs.

Marantz

Written By J Doe, Rancho Mirage Ca on Tuesday, June 07, 2011

This is a well put together, great sounding amp, the only omission in my opinion is no dedicated subwoofer output. I have been using this unit for a few months driving a high end set of book shelf speakers and have been blown away by the clarity this amp provides.

Marantz PM5004

Written By TammyA, Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday, January 25, 2011

We bought a turntable and some pretty decent speakers. We wanted an amp with a phono imput because we didn't want to buy an extra piece of equipment just to hook up the turntable. Marantz has a good reputation, so I thought I'd try it. I grew up with an amazing stereo system (old tube amp, etc). This amp meets the high bar of my expectations. Really, really pleased with this purchase.

Marantz PM5004

Written By orange, SF on Friday, December 31, 2010

I got this as a 2 channel dedicated music setup with PSB mid level bookshelf speakers, audioquest wires, and a streamer DAC to play pandora one (upgraded) through my computer. I compared this with my 10 year old NAD C340 2 channel 40wattx2 intergrated amp. The marantz was more detailed in the high range and had a more focused midrange soundstage than the NAD, but the NAD was smoother/ warmer (as NAD tends to do) in all ranges with more low end strength. Crutchfield customer service was fantastic at all stages, including return. I think the NADs on Crutchfield would be a better 2 channel bet than the Marantz. (This review was after 10-20 hours burn in on the new amp.)
