An integrated amp that welcomes digital sources

Show your speakers some love, without leaving digital music out of the loop. While many integrated amplifiers have only analog inputs, the Marantz PM6005 features optical and coaxial digital inputs that feed this amp's high-quality digital-to-analog converter (DAC). That means you can connect a network music player or streaming media device, as well as your turntable and AM/FM tuner. The PM6005's DAC is as adept at decoding high-resolution audio files from your digital music player as it is at improving the sound quality of your CD player.

There's power, and then there's clean, dynamic power

Once it sinks its teeth into your music, the PM6005 knows just how to deliver warm, dynamic sound to your speakers. The conservative 45-watt stereo power rating only tells part of this amp's story. Those 45 watts per channel are generated by a high-current power supply that features a toroidal power transformer with high-current storage capacitors. That allows this amp to handle the heavy demands of 4-ohm speakers as well as dynamic peaks in music. Plus, the output stage utilizes current feedback circuitry — first developed by Marantz — to ensure clean playback with minimal distortion while driving both easy and difficult loads. So when that muted trumpet solo is suddenly augmented with the full power of the entire horn section, the PM6005 can handle that sudden jolt of brass cleanly in all its dynamic glory.

Tone controls, direct mode, and room for extra speakers

The PM6005 features two pairs of speaker connectors, front-panel treble and bass controls, and Source Direct mode for bypassing these tone controls if you desire even purer sound. There's also a discrete headphone amplifier for the full-size headphone jack, for late-night music listening that won't disturb others.

Everything you always wanted in a stereo receiver, except the radio

An integrated amplifier is essentially a receiver without a built-in AM/FM tuner. You get power to drive your speakers, audio controls, and inputs for music source components. Connect an iPod, a computer, a network music player, or any other device that can play Internet radio, and you may find you have no need for an AM/FM radio.

This amp is an upgrade.

Written By Mark, North Carolina on Monday, September 21, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I hemmed and hawed about upgrading our sound system, which does double duty for music and streaming tv. I was using an old Sony 5.1 receiver but was only using it for 2 channels. There was a deal in place if this Marantz amp was purchased with the matching CD player. Finally, I did it. I wasn't sure what to expect as this was my first experience with a true stereo amplifier.

A couple other background pieces of info. We are using a pair of Pioneer floor standing speakers (the Andrew Jones variety). My wife is a trained, degreed musician who before this seemed disinterested in quality of musical sound from our gear. I hooked up the new rig, and put in the Pink Floyd DSOTM CD. When I pushed play on the unit I thought something was wrong with the sound (I was sitting 2 feet away from the unit/tv stand) because it sounded like the musical image was coming from the tv screen, which was turned off - unbelievable. Backing up, we turned up the volume, but only a little because this baby can crank! The sound improved so much compared to the old Sony we were shocked.

Long story short, within 30 minutes, we were diving through old CDs we had forgotten and rediscovering our tunes. Beyond that, we are now hearing things in recorded music we have Never Heard Before. The best way I can describe the reproduction, is "pure".

You won't be disappointed, and won't miss surround sound. There is no comparison. Don't get hung up on the amp ratings. This thing can do it well.

Pros: quality, simplicity, detailed sound, balanced musical quality, power!!, auto shut-off

Cons: you haven't bought it yet because you are reading this review

Does everything well

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I use this unit for Vinyl (Rega rp-1), CD (Marantz CD6005) and digital (Optical - MacBook Pro) and this little amp makes each source shine. I have it hooked up to an old pair of Klipsch kg2.5s and they sound better than anything else I've powered them with... Works beautifully with the matching CD player... Auto shut off feature is great.

Pros: Value for money Ease of use Source options

Wanted to use it but couldn't.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought the PM6005, but I don't need all the features. Will return and get the PM5005 next time. I only play vinyl and CD'S on my stereo. Not much power difference between the two.

Pros: Better quality than I have now.

Cons: None.

Working Well

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

No problems, but I wish the unit could drive a little more volume. During first week of operation the amp cut out on me from too much volume.. I am glad it cut out- to prevent damage. If you want more sound- you pay more money. Please note- the amp was driving as clear as a bell when she cut off. The sound from this amp is WAY better than my old Rotel RA 1060.

Pros: Nice presence at most frequency and volume levels. Great value- Auto shut off after 30 minutes is a feature I use daily. Love the great hook up versatility.

Cons: Get banana plugs. Otherwise speaker hook is (and always has been) a pain. If your room is dim, it may be difficult to see volume setting. This is not an issue for me, however.

Fantastic product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is paired with the Marantz cd6005. I am very impressed with the sound quality. It powers B&W 684s. Those speakers never sounded so good with my previous amplifier ( Onkyo). Would strongly recommend this product, well worth the money.

Pros: beautiful compact design

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The time had finally come to replace my aging stereo amplifier. I did my due diligence: research, looking over the specs, and relying on my memory for the names of audio equipment makers with an outstanding reputation for quality. I settled on the Marantz PM6005 integrated amplifier along with the Marantz CD6005 CD player. Initially, I had a concern about the output of this integrated amplifier. My concerns were unfounded. I am using the PM6005 in a room approximately 15' x 15', driving a pair of vintage 45-year old JBL's along with a pair of small Klipsch bookshelf speakers. The Marantz PM6005 has more than enough power for my speaker combination. I do wish the bass and treble controls were a bit more sensitive, but the Marantz supplies sound with such wonderful clarity one hardly needs to tweak the bass and treble at all. Thanks to Crutchfield for their excellent and efficient service.

Pros: Clarity of sound. Ample power.

Cons: Bass and Treble control sensitivity could be improved, but not a significant issue.

A great Amp

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was guided towards buying this amp by the award it received from the UK-based WhatHiFi web magazine (Best Amp under 500 pounds sterling). I use it as the main unit in a 2-channel audio setup and it has delivered everything I had hoped in that it easily provides enough full and clear sound to fill a room. I paired it with the matching Marantz CD6005 CD player and Klipsch Reference RF62-II floorstanding speakers. Very happy with the entire setup.

Pros: Fantastic performance for the price. Warm and spacious sound with sufficient power to drive a solid pair of floor-standing speakers.

Cons: None at this price.

Marantz PM6005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After finishing my basement into a TV / Music room, I was looking to upgrade my low budget thirty year old amplifier. I was saving for the 4000 or 5000 series Marantz. Then I happened to read a review of the PM6005. It sounded like more of what I was looking for, Direct Source Signal, Loudness Control Button at low volume. Plus a great deal when bundled with the matching CD6005.

I am so glad I changed my mind. I used to use an equalizer to get the sound that I wanted from my vinyl. Now the amplifier does not come off of Source Direct. Every play sounds like a private live concert. Either through Vinyl or CD. More than enough power, clear highs and lows, and everything in between. I have been missing alot.

Pros: Source Direct Loudness Great deal for the money

Cons: Now I want to upgrade my Turntable

PM6005 -- No problems

Bought this Amp to replace an aging Rotel preamp and Proton amp. Pleased with the purchase. Plenty powerful for my 4 ohm KEF speakers. Nice colorless sound. Pleased with the purchase.

A Very Nice Amp

Written By Mark H., Kalamazoo, MI on Wednesday, June 25, 2014

I had purchased a Yamaha AS500 that was rated highly, but after several weeks of critical listening I found that amp to be somewhat brittle sounding. I have never owned a Marantz until now, but I was always impressed by the warmer sound that Marantz produced in a solid state component. The PM6005 is an excellent amplifier, and even though its power capabilities are less than the AS500, this amp can still play loud and clean, depending of course, on the efficiency of your speakers. And the fidelity is superior. I'm using this amp connected with a Marantz CD5004 player and a pair of Paradigm Atom Monitors, although I may upgrade to some Dali Zensor 3 speakers later. (See WhatHiFi reviews concerning Marantz and Dali online) Regarding the features, the loudness control is good for occasional use at lower volume, although sometimes the midrange gets lost in the mix. The source direct feature is valuable, but only when you have an exceptional source, such as a well mastered cd. Otherwise, the tone controls are extremely helpful in achieving a more balanced sound. I hope to utilize the phono input eventually. Vinyl is still preferable even though cds are convenient. Finally, the digital inputs and Cirrus Logic DAC are extremely useful for refinement of various sources including television and cinematic audio. If you're looking for high fidelity and versatility, consider the PM6005.

Pros: Natural fidelity, digital inputs and DAC

Cons: Moderate power, no subwoofer output

Mind Blowing Sound!

Written By marty, Fort Worth TX on Sunday, January 19, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this integrated amplifier to replace an expensive vintage McIntosh amplifier and pre-amplifier which cost me three times as much and weighs a ton and takes up more space. I loved the fact that it has a loudness contour which is hard to find these days. I listen to music at moderate levels and the loudness contour makes a huge difference. I have really efficient speakers so I don't need allot of power to push them either and the Marantz does a fine job. I have always loved the sound of McIntosh until I heard the Marantz PM6005! Wow it sounds so smooth and the bass is pronounced but not boomy unlike the McIntosh. My speakers have a center mounted horn which at times sounded harsh with the McIntosh but not with the Marantz, the highs sound magnificent, smooth and sweet. The phono pre amp sounds amazing as well and is dead quiet. Plenty of options to hook up any component and the finish and build is solid. The esthetics are pleasing and contemporary. I couldn't be happier and highly recommend.

Pros: Sound Quality Loudness Contour Finish and Build Endless Connectivity Possibilites Simple Remote

Cons: None
