About the Marantz PM6005

David Brown

An integrated amp that welcomes digital sources

Show your speakers some love, without leaving digital music out of the loop. While many integrated amplifiers have only analog inputs, the Marantz PM6005 features optical and coaxial digital inputs that feed this amp's high-quality digital-to-analog converter (DAC). That means you can connect a network music player or streaming media device, as well as your turntable and AM/FM tuner. The PM6005's DAC is as adept at decoding high-resolution audio files from your digital music player as it is at improving the sound quality of your CD player.

The PM6005's DAC is as adept at decoding high-resolution audio files from your digital music player as it is at improving the sound quality of your CD player.

There's power, and then there's clean, dynamic power

Once it sinks its teeth into your music, the PM6005 knows just how to deliver warm, dynamic sound to your speakers. The conservative 45-watt stereo power rating only tells part of this amp's story. Those 45 watts per channel are generated by a high-current power supply that features a toroidal power transformer with high-current storage capacitors. That allows this amp to handle the heavy demands of 4-ohm speakers as well as dynamic peaks in music. Plus, the output stage utilizes current feedback circuitry — first developed by Marantz — to ensure clean playback with minimal distortion while driving both easy and difficult loads. So when that muted trumpet solo is suddenly augmented with the full power of the entire horn section, the PM6005 can handle that sudden jolt of brass cleanly in all its dynamic glory.

Tone controls, direct mode, and room for extra speakers

The PM6005 features two pairs of speaker connectors, front-panel treble and bass controls, and Source Direct mode for bypassing these tone controls if you desire even purer sound. There's also a discrete headphone amplifier for the full-size headphone jack, for late-night music listening that won't disturb others.

Features

Marantz HDAM Technology: Marantz's exclusive HDAM technology features precision discrete components that provide wide dynamic range with low distortion, outperforming conventional op-amp integrated circuit chips. HDAM modules are used in the digital audio converter stages as well as the critical analog audio stage.

Current Feedback Amplifier: Equipped with multiple high current wide range power transistors, the PM6005 features the ability to handle low impedance speakers, and is rated at 45 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 60 watts per channel into 4 ohms. The output stages feature current feedback (originated by Marantz) instead of voltage feedback, for the lowest distortion and highest stability.

High Current Power Supply: Featuring a high current high capacity shielded toroidal power transformer, the power supply section also employs high current high speed Shottky Barrier Diodes, along with high current storage capacitors that together provide wide dynamic range along with low impedance drive capability.

Reference Quality DAC: The PM6005 is equipped with a reference class CS4398 24-bit/192kHz DAC for exceptional sound quality of your digital audio sources. The digital audio section is housed in a shielded compartment to prevent interference with the analog audio circuit blocks.

Analog & Digital Inputs: In addition to four other analog line level inputs, the PM6005 also features a dedicated phono input, for compatibility with moving magnet turntables. Both optical and coaxial digital audio inputs are provided, for compatibility with a wide range of digital audio sources (2ch PCM only). The analog inputs and coaxial digital input are gold-plated for optimum signal transfer.

Gold-Plated Binding Posts: Equipped with two sets of speaker terminals, the PM6005 can drive two pairs of speakers, or it can be connected to one pair of bi-wiring compatible speakers, with one set of terminals for the low range drivers and the other set connected to the high range drivers The PM6005 is fitted with eight gold-plated binding post terminals for long life and optimum signal transfer integrity. The binding posts will accept  banana plugs (single/dual), pin connectors, and bare wire (up to 10AWG).

Fully Discrete Headphone Amp: For superb sound quality with the widest range of headphone types, the PM6005 features a fully discrete headphone amplifier that is able to handle just about any headphone type, regardless of impedance or sensitivity. The high quality gold plated 1/4" headphone jack is compatible with audiophile and studio headphones and adapters.

Tone Controls + Source Direct Mode: This unit has a tone control function for adjustment of bass (low frequency) and treble (high frequency) sound to produce your preferred sound. There is also Loudness feature which compensates for human hearing characteristics by boosting the bass and treble response at low volume levels to achieve a more pleasing tonal balance. The Source Direct function bypasses unneeded circuit stages (such as the tone controls) for the most direct audio path from input to output.

Aluminum/Glass-Reinforced Resin Front-Panel: The integrated amplifier's front-panel uses a carefully chosen combination of aluminum & glass-reinforced resin to create a distinctive three dimensional appearance. Indirect reflecting blue LEDs indicating input selection and heighten its elegant appearance.

Remote Control: Featuring an easy to use ergonomic design, the elegant remote control can also be user to control the matching CD6005 CD player (sold separately), as well as controlling a network player. Remote input and output terminals let you connect the PM6005 to other Marantz components, such as the matching CD6005 CD player, allowing you to place the PM6005 out of sight (such as in a cabinet) yet still providing full remote control capabilities. The IR (infrared) flasher port lets you connect the PM6005 to an external system remote controller

AC Outlets: The Marantz PM6005 is fitted with two switched & one un-switched AC power outlets to connect your other A/V components.

Protection Circuit: The PM6005's Protection Circuit prevents damage to devices within the power supply when an abnormality such as an overload, excess voltage occurs or over temperature for any reason. If a malfunction occurs in this unit, the power indicator blinks red and the unit switches to standby mode.

Auto Standby Mode: With the Auto Standby Mode "On", this unit will automatically enter the Auto Standby Mode after approximately 30 continuous minutes of no output from the speakers or headphones.

Q
I was originally recommended the PM6005 for my needs. Instead, I purchased a NAD D3020 for a price I couldn't pass up. While the NAD sounds really good, I've constantly been thinking about this amp. Does anyone know how they compare? I'm thinking that I'm missing a bit of clarity and power. I have Wharfedale Diamond 10.1's.

I purchased this amp, along with a pair of KEF Q300 speakers. This combination provides a monstrous sound in my living room. I also bought a fancy Samsung 46 inch tv, and rigged the whole thing together. I am now clinically addicted to this setup and must enter rehab at some point in 2015. This amp will take you wherever you need to go.

Although I can't compare the 2 units, I can say that this amp has been a great enhancement to our entertainment center. It is clean, powerful, clear sounding and seems to be a full range sound, with a good set of speakers.

I've been doing quite a bit of research on integrated amps and have come to an impasse. Should I purchase this Marantz or pony up for a more expensive offering -- eyeing the Peachtree amps (nova 125se or 220se). Any suggestions? Feel free to recommend a completely different product! I'm open to recommendations from an expert. Note: my use case is fairly bland ... Music Hall 2.2 record player connected to amp connected to Sonos speakers. I can see adding in a nice pair of bookshelf (possibly floor) speakers eventually.

Hi Brandon, there is a considerable difference in price between the amps you are considering which suggests you are very open to suggestions. The Peachtree amps would certainly be better quality but you probably won't be getting the best out of it with the other gear you are currently running. What is your total budget for a system upgrade? Ive always been a big believer that half the budget should be spent on the speakers. So, you are willing to spend about 4k on a new amp+speakers+turntable package, then a Peachtree would be a fine option. I allowed myself a budget of 2k and just purchased the Marantz PM6005 with matching CD6005 CD player and Klipsch floorstanders. I am extremely happy with it. It effortlessly fills my large open-plan living room with crystal clear sound. The 45 Watt power rating feels conservative as the marantz has the same presence as a Yamaha amp I just replaced which was rated at 90 watts per channel. Plus the marantz has flexibility to handle both digital and analog inputs so it provides what I need now but is a sound base for building the system further in the future. For me, the PM6005 is the best performing amp for the money and it is hard to see you going wrong with it. John.

I picked this up about a year ago. I had the chance to hear it side by side with a couple of peachtree options as well as several more expensive options. There were noticeable improvements with amps costing 3-4 times as much, but this really really stands up to anything else in the price range. Great DAC, great phono pre. Really my only complaint is that the volume adjustment with the remote is a bit jumpy.

I'm no expert but do like my Marantz amp. I bought it to pair with a Marantz CD player and to connect with SONOS and Polk bookshelf speakers. Would buy it again.

The only way I can answer this is to tell you how I use it, and you can decide if it fits your needs. I listen to mostly album rock, and some new alternative. Very little jazz or classical. The room I use it in is relatively small, and my listening position is midway between speakers in front of the system. I use the matching CD player, a direct-drive turntable, optical input from the Television, and the network input from a "smart" blue-ray player. I also use a surge protector/power conditioner for all these components. Given this setup, I am extremely happy with the power and the sound. I don't play anything very loud, so the loudness button comes in handy. I haven't needed to use the bass or treble control to get the sound I want, and it feels like I am listening to a live concert no matter the source. In the future I may upgrade the turntable and speakers. In conclusion, it is a very subjective choice. For the money, it was the best I have ever spent.

I can't say anything about the others but i am very happy with my Marantz. Very solid unit and sounds great connected to full range bookshelf speakers. I am no expert but I rebuild vacuum tube amps and antique radios. The components in this are very good and not inexpensive. Best of luck, whatever you decide

The Marantz works great for me. I have a projec turntable and B & W speakers. There is ample power to drive the speakers with no distortion.

Very good detail, and punch. Plays classical music as well as rock. The built in DAC is a noticeable improvement over the analogue outputs from the Blu-Ray player for CD playback. Don't own a turntable so can't say anything about the phono input. It has very good dynamics and plays at late-night volumes with good clarity. Plays louder than the 45wpc, but might want more power for driving large speakers to high volumes, but fine driving my relatively inefficient 85db speakers in a bedroom size room.

Brandon, I went about replacing a 20 year old Denon system a little differently then you are attempting. I found a pair of Paradigm Studio 100 speakers that gave me the sound quality that I was looking for and then went out to try to find the best amp to drive them. I wasn't looking for a surround sound amp and I did have a limited budget so my choices quickly settled down to the Marantz 6005 and the Peachtree 125. After listening to both of them, I settled(gladly) for the Marantz. The Marantz had the A_B speaker switch for piping music into another room w/o adding an external switch. The Marantz gives a great listening range over low to high frequencies w/o distortion. I listen to Sonos and am in the process of ripping my CD collection so I can play it with Sonos as the driver. One thing I forgot to mention was that when I bought the Marantz, they had a bundle going where they were throwing the Marantz 6005 CD player in at a discount. The two are a nice addition to the whole package. Bart

I am not an expert, but we purchased the Marantz amp and a good set of tower speakers for a large room where we mostly listen to jazz and classical cds. We have been pleased with the quality of sound.

RCA jacks labeled network are to bring in data from your computer to paly throught the apm. I have my SONOS system hooked up this way and itt works like a dream to stream internet radio stations, mpr from the computer or from tthe Amazon Cloud.

To plug in a network audio player. I have not used them.

They are for whatever you want them to be for, as long as your device uses RCA jacks. I have a CD player plugged into CD and a DVD player plugged into Tuner. I will probably plug my Nintendo Wii into the Network jacks.
