Overview: The Marantz PM8003 is a two-channel integrated amplifier rated at 70 watts x 2 into 8-ohms
and 100 watts x 2 into 4-ohms. In both the preamp and power amp
sections, the PM8003 uses fully-discrete, high speed current feedback circuits
for minimal phase shift and better detail resolution. Even the phono input is a
fully discrete, constant-current design optimized for moving magnet phono
cartridges. Another discrete implementation, is Marantz's notable HDAM SA3 (the
most recent addition to the High Definition Amplifier Module series) which
performs critical voltage to current conversions throughout the PM8003.
Chassis Construction: The integrated amplifier's chassis itself
includes a triple-layer bottom plate to insure long-term alignment and vibration
control. The integrated amplifier's front panel uses a carefully chosen
combination of aluminum and glass-reinforced resin to create a distinctive three
dimensional appearance. Indirect reflecting blue LEDs indicating input
selection, heighten its elegant appearance.
All Discrete Current Feedback Amplifier:
Both the pre-amp and main-amp incorporate a high-speed current feedback amp
circuit to maintain accuracy and a natural sound field. Marantz' proprietary
current-feedback circuit, using discrete components is adopted in the
pre-amplifier and power amplifier. It is a high-speed amplifier using the latest
technology developed for the higher-grade a amplifier.
HDAM (High Definition Amplifier
Module): Marantz uses HDAMs
instead of standard op-amps, rendering a more dynamic sound and less
susceptibility to radiated noise, heat, and vibration. The V/I converter circuit
which is the key block of the current-feedback pre-amplifier and power
amplifier, is equivalent to the HDAM-SA3 amp-module developed for higher-grade
CD Direct Buffer Amplifier:
The PM8003 incorporates a specialized input buffer amplifier at the CD input,
this prevents interference between the left and right channels and from the
effects of other circuits. A discrete configuration high-speed buffer amp built
on the HDAM SA technology is incorporated into the buffer amp circuit.
The PM8003's main amp has the capability to momentarily pass 25 amps or more,
providing high-powered drive to the speakers.
Short Power Line: To improve
the momentary-current supply, a new layout placing priority on making the large
current line connections as short as possible is used. The power supply circuit,
main-amp output stage, and heatsink are unified, and the large current line is
arranged to be as short as possible while remaining symmetrical.
All-Discrete Current-Feedback Phono Equalizer: The PM8003 provides an
all-discrete, current-feedback phono equalizer amplifier for connected MM
Double-Shielded Toroidal Transformer: This unit is equipped with a
toroidal power transformer to minimize vibration and leakage flux specific to
the transformer. Especially to reduce leakage flux, which affects sound quality,
the periphery is double-shielded, using a core ring and a short ring.
Large Capacity Block Condenser: A large-capacity condenser of 18,000uF
is used in the power circuit of the power amplifier. In the preamplifier, a
4,700uF condenser is used.
Protective Circuit: This unit is equipped with a protective circuit to
protect the amplifier circuits and speaker system against damage. If the
protective circuit is activated, the sound is instantly muted.
A mechanical switch turns the main power on/off. When off, the remote has no
effect. When on, the remote can be used to switch between on and standby.
A rotary knob is used to select the input source (Phono, CD, Tuner, AUX/DVD,
Recorder 1/2,) for listening.
A rotary knob to adjust the bass output, +/-10 dB at 50 Hz.
A rotary knob to adjust the treble output, +/-10 dB at 20 kHz.
A rotary knob to adjust the left/right balance.
Speakers: This knob is for selecting the speakers connected to the
Speakers System A and/or B terminals on the unit's rear-panel. When you use
headphones, set the knob to Off.
Power Amp Direct: This button, when pressed, allows the PM8003 to act
as a power amplifier.
When source direct is engaged the bass, treble, and balance circuits are
Remote Control: The supplied
wireless remote will control the PM8003 and Marantz CD players,
DVD players, tuners, and tape decks.
The speaker system A and system B outputs are binding posts. They are not 5-way posts, but
will accept single banana plugs, pin connectors,
and bare wire.
The CD, Tuner, and Aux/DVD inputs are RCA connectors.
Recorder 1 and Recorder 2 have RCA inputs and outputs.
The RCA phono input will accept moving magnet cartridges. There is a ground
terminal beside the phono input.
Stereo RCA outputs feed a powered subwoofer or another amplifier.
Power Amp Direct In: The PM8003 can be used as the main amp in a
system with a different pre-amp. In this case press the Power Amp Direct button
on the front panel of the unit.
An RCA input and an RCA output are used with other compatible Marantz components
using the D.BUS remote system, CD player, DVD player, Tuner, etc. This allows
the included remote to control the other Marantz components.
A standard 1/4" headphone jack is on the front panel. The speaker outputs
are not automatically muted when you plug in headphones so the speakers must be
manually turned off.
