That's because this player sounds so good, you'll forget where the time went as you happily rediscover your digital music collection. It delivers audiophile quality performance with high-resolution Super Audio CDs as well as standard audio CDs. Enjoy smooth, densely layered sound with outstanding stereo separation and spot-on imaging, thanks to Marantz's precision craftsmanship and carefully selected internal components. You'll hear subtle nuances and musical textures on your favorite recordings that you may have never even noticed.

It can even play the latest computer-based high-res linear PCM and DSD (direct stream digital) music files.

Top-notch quality inside and out

A hefty toroidal power supply delivers plenty of clean current for effortlessly dynamic playback. The high-performance DAC accurately reproduces audio tracks with stunning clarity and detail. Better than expected

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been getting by with an aging Marantz CD and Pioneer DVD/CD/SACD player (CD63SE and DV-58AV, respectively) coupled to decent external D/A converters (PS Audio, Musical Fidelity) and, thinking D/A conversion was the critical factor affecting the sound, wasn't expecting a vast improvement with the SA8005. I was wrong. There has been a significant improvement in the sound of both CDs and SACDs -- silky smooth highs and very nicely balanced across the audible spectrum. Previously, if I felt like hearing the best possible sound from my system I'd reach for an LP but now this is only true when playing freakish LP outliers like early London pressings. I have no idea if the SA8005's D/A converters are better or other factors are in play but I'm very happy with the purchase. My other equipment equipment includes an Almarro 318B SE tube amp and Altec 604Es.

Pros: Looks good, plays great.

Cons: None so far.

A great CD Player + very good DAC

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After several weeks of listening I am very pleased with my SA8005 CD player. I wasn't all that familiar with Marantz products so I was a bit concerned how the DAC would perform but both sound crisp and well balanced with my Musical Fidelity amplifier. Prior to this purchase I had an Audiolab 8300 CD player which also had a great DAC but the SA8005 CD player has a smoother more rounded sound. This was also my first time buying from Crutchfield and i was very impressed with the service (high marks to my product advisor who was delightful and very knowledgeable). I will definitely buy from Crutchfield again.

Pros: Crisp sound when playing CDs (especially SACD) with plenty of punch and equally solid performance from the DAC. Very easy to use and solidly built, immediately noticeable when you insert the CD into the tray.

Cons: Nothing significant yet other than the remote seems a bit slow responding at time and I definitely miss the printed out manual.

Good for the money.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used play California Audio Lab Mark II. It was play well since 1996. I had Pioneer DVD player that can play SACD, but sound quality was same as regular CD. I put it in the trash can when I purchased blue ray DVD player. Recently I purchased Marantz and played old SACD. The main difference is the player has more power not only clear sound(I new SACD has more db later). That is why I can hear detailed sound more. I am happy now. Problem is there is not many SACD's.

Pros: Clear sound and powerful punch.

Cons: There is no eject button in the remote control. Fast-forward does not working well.

Good choice

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to get back into a higher end audio system and was familiar with the Marantz brand - had a 1060 integrated amp in the 70's (it still works!) so I opted for this model coupled with the 8005 CD player. First of all I was really impressed with the build quality - a very nice looking piece of equipment. Secondly, it still had the same tactile feeling on the controls that my old model did - very precise and balanced. Soundwise, it is pretty much a true reproduction of what you put into it - very happy with the power and tone quality of it. I must say something about Crutchfield - this was my first ever purchase from them and with everything all totaled, more than a few thousand bucks. I can't believe how fast things get to you - I ordered a few things at 7:00pm and they were at my house at 3:00 the next day! Secondly, I had a real issue with a DBX equalizer I was trying to hook into the system and it would not work correctly -their technical service people spent a great deal of time with me and figured out a wiring solution that would work with the components involved. In a world where a lot of companies seem to get by with as little as they can do for you, I feel the opposite is true for Crutchfield - you have a happy customer!

Pros: Great build quality, classic Marantz sound.

Cons: Zilch

Great CD Player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wonderful sound ! The player begs you to pull out CDs that haven't seen the light of day in ages and doesn't disappoint. Your reward is a very easy well rounded sound, deep bass and sound stage depth...more on the warm side of sound than the analytical. So.... a joy to listen to, CD after CD.

Pros: Ability to hook up to a computer or jump drive....which I haven't tried yet.

Cons: None so far !

USB DAC does not work

Written by: cupboy from UT on May 18, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

MacBook unsupported by USB DAC. This eliminates the ability to play DSD files. There is a review online that says the same thing, so it's not just limited to the unit I bought.

Pros: SACD playback

Cons: DSD Downloads will be unplayable.

Great Player That Will Last a Lifetime

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Crutchfield overview says you can hear the difference and they are absolutely correct. I was using a Blu-Ray player as my CD player and had no idea what I was missing. The SA8005 was a giant leap forward in sound quality. Before purchasing this player I found the highs in most music very annoying and grating, it was a "Wow, how did that cowbell get into this song?" situation. This player puts the highs in their natural place. I can hear them and enjoy them without them being overbearing and irritating. Same for the bass, I can hear it and appreciate it, but its not distracting me by bumping the entire room. This unit really separates the sound. I can now clearly hear different voices and instruments in the music making it more detailed and interesting for me. Also, in certain songs, I can now hear very low volume, subtle sounds that I was not aware of previously. While SACDs are not common these days, I still have enough in my collection that I wanted this feature; it's nice being able to enjoy all that music again. I plan on using the DAC feature in the future with Hi-Res downloads, but can't comment on that feature at this time. The SA8005 performs admirably with my iPod. Using a 5' cord I can sit in my favorite chair and listen to music without having to change disc. Using Apple Lossless format the sound quality is comparable to the original CD. I am very happy with this purchase and highly recommend it to anyone wanting a new CD/SACD/DAC player.

Pros: Construction: moving parts operate smoothly and quietly. No wobbly buttons or noisy CD trays. Versatility: CD and SACD player, a DAC, and an iPod dock. Connections: More than most people will ever use, but its nice to have them, just in case. Cost vs. Benefit: There are better players but they cost a lot more money for only a small (if even noticeable) increase in sound quality. Aesthetics: Coordinates with my other Marantz unit, and lastly: it really ties the room together.

Cons: I've used the SA8005 for several weeks and have no issues or concerns with it. Considering what I wanted and needed to what I got, I would have to try very hard to think of a con for this player.

Windows Driver Faulty

Written by: Amham from New Jersey on February 18, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've owned the SA8003 (some problems), 8004, (great player) and now the 8005. Marantz generally makes a quality player and that is so for the hardware of the SA8005. However, the Windows driver is faulty and will not load (Win7). I've spent the last 2 weeks trying to contact and convince Marantz USA they have a problem with the Windows USB driver. Very poor customer service, they are either clueless to what the driver does (tier 1) or dismissive of the problem (tier 3). I resorted to the internet (Head-fi.org) to gather other new owners and found the problem to be global. Finally a Swedish user was able to contact Marantz UK and their customer service recognized the problem, researched it and found the proper replacement. Luckily the Swedish user sent me the updated driver and finally the SA8005 is working 100% with high speed USB and DSD. If you are having a problem with loading the Windows driver (32/64 bit) insist that Marantz USA supply the corrected driver on their website. As of 2/18/14 the posted driver is faulty.

Pros: Great hardware, works 100% with MAC but NOT Windows.

Cons: Faulty Windows USB driver.

Features

SACD Player: The Marantz SA8005 supports playback of single-layer, dual-layer, and hybrid-layer SACDs; as well as CD-Audio, CD-R/RW (MP3/WMA) discs. The Super Audio standard is based on Direct Stream Digital (DSD) technology. This direct-stream digital format is a 1-bit system with a sampling frequency 64x higher than a conventional audio CD (2,822,400 Hz vs. 44,100 Hz). SA-CD produces a frequency response of 2Hz to 50kHz and a 110dB dynamic range. Because of the way inaudible and audible frequencies mix, the resulting sound is more natural.

Marantz HDAM Technology: Instead of conventional op-amp integrated circuits, the SA8005 is equipped with our exclusive HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module) technology. These discrete circuit elements feature wide-band response along with high slew rate, to deliver the most nuanced and detailed musical reproduction, and are ideally suited for today's high resolution wide-band digital audio sources.

High Resolution D/A Conversion: Featuring the reference-class high current CS4398 D/A converter, the SA8005 can accept a wide range of digital audio source types, including Super Audio CD Direct Stream Digital content at 2.8 and 5.6 MHz, along with linear PCM up to 24-bits/192kHz. The analog audio sections feature HDAM technologies for the purest audio reproduction. The DAC section features dual clock synchronization for optimum signal decoding, and can also decode MP3 and WMA digital audio formats.

Digital Inputs + Stand Alone DAC Capability: You can use the SA8005 as a stand-alone digital-to-analog converter, thanks to the inclusion of both coaxial and optical digital audio inputs. You can also connect your favorite portable audio device, via the convenient front-panel USB (type-A) port, and the SA8005 is compatible with the iPod, iPod touch and iPhone. The rear-panel asynchronous high speed USB (type-B) port lets you connect your home PC to the SA8005, so you can enjoy superb sound quality from your favorite PCM and DSD high resolution tracks stored on your computer. The USB (type-B) port also features Marantz's unique ground isolator circuit design that prevents PC-originated ground plane noise transfer.

  • Optical/Coaxial Inputs: The optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital inputs let you connect up to two external digital audio devices, such as Apple TV or other network digital audio players. Only PCM signals (32-192kHz) are compatible with the optical and coaxial inputs.
  • USB Type-A Input (iPod/Android Compatible): The front-panel USB port lets you connect select USB mass storage class devices (formatted in FAT16/32); such as Android smartphones/tablets (Froyo/Gingergread OS only), portable digital audio players, and thumbdrives; plus Apple iPod/iPhone devices (Classic, Nano, Touch, iPhone). You'll be able to listen to stored music (MP3/WMA/WAV/AAC) and music apps from your compatible device. This USB port will also charge your device while connected and you can control music playback from the included remote control.
  • USB Type-B Input (Mac/Windows Comaptible): By connecting a computer to the USB (type-B) port on the rear-panel of this unit, you're able to bypass the computer's soundcard and playback a variety of digital music files stored on your computer through the SACD player's 24-bit/192kHz DAC. The unit is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.3 and later, as well as Windows XP (SP3), Vista, 7, or 8. Windows requires the installation of a dedicated driver software found on the Marantz Website.

Analog & Digital Outputs: Two digital outputs, one optical (Toslink) and one coaxial (RCA), are provided for sending the audio signal to the digital input terminals of a receiver or digital recorder. No signal is output from either during playback of the HD layer of a Super Audio CD; digital signals are output when playing a CD, the CD layer of a Hybrid SA-CD, or any device connected to one of the digital inputs. The SACD player also features a stereo RCA analog output connection.

Fully Discrete Headphone Amp: For the most enjoyable personal audio experience, connect your favorite headphones to the SA8005 and listen to the highest fidelity natural sound, thanks to our fully discrete headphone amplifier circuitry. With discrete circuit headphone amplifier topology, the SA8005 delivers superb personal listening, featuring wide-band response, tremendous dynamic range against a virtually noiseless background, and there's a convenient front-panel headphone volume control.

High Current Toroidal Power Transformer: For the most stable DC supply to the various circuit stages, the SA8005 is equipped with a high current toroidal power transformer, and features separate rectifier stages for the analog and digital sections to prevent mutual interference.

System Remote Control: The ergonomically designed remote control includes additional control functionality that lets you operate the matching Marantz PM8005 integrated stereo amplifier (642PM8005, sold separately) as well as our network audio component. The SA8005 also features remote control input and output ports for additional remote control connectivity.

Auto Standby: With the Auto Standby Mode turned on this unit will enter standby mode after approximately 30 minutes (continuous) of no audio playback.

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

excellent product from reputable dealer [ Bruce S.  Jan 23, 2016 ]

2 questions already asked

Not sure. iPhone 5S plays on it. [ DAVID  May 11, 2015 ]
I have a I Pod classic 80 GB and plays just fine. I hope that's helps........... [ CASIMIR  May 05, 2015 ]
Yes. I have a classic ipod and it plays beautifully on the Marantz SA8005CD player. It really augments the sound of all that is played through it and brings it forward as if you are in a concert hall. An investment that is worth every penny or dollar! [ JOAN  May 05, 2015 ]
Yes, the Classic iPod will play via USB. However, I found that you had to use the iPod's interface to play, as the Marantz's (at least my early production model) interface was problematic. Hope this helps. [ RAYMOND E.  May 05, 2015 ]
Yes. At least it works with the last generation 160GB iPod. I have a couple that I use with SA8005. I would think that any of them work. I've also used first gen iPod touch, my old 3G iPone and first gen iPad. [ MICHAEL W  May 04, 2015 ]
I don't know. I don't own any iPod so I have never had occasion to answer that question. But I have enjoyed this CD player for a couple of years. It is my second Marantz CD player, the first one having been very old so I replaced it with this much-improved model. [ Andrew  May 04, 2015 ]
Yes, listening to Classic 160gb iPod right now from front USB connector and USB selected from input. [ MITCHELL  May 04, 2015 ]
Yes. [ Michael  May 04, 2015 ]
I'm not sure what is being asked here. If, by TV monitor, you mean the readout display on the front of the unit, yes, it does display track numbers and times. I assume this is the kind of text your refer to. [ Peter  Oct 08, 2014 ]
If available on the disk, album and track titles scroll across the screen. The album title scrolls across once the tray has closed and read the disk. The track title scrolls across at the start of each track. It then reverts to track number and time into the track. [ MICHAEL W  Oct 06, 2014 ]
Sorry, I don't know for sure because I don't use it on a system with a video monitor or via HDMI for multi-channel. [ WILLIAM  Oct 06, 2014 ]
Not that I know of. [ DAVID  Oct 06, 2014 ]
Yes, but only for the CDs that have it encoded into the CD. Some of my CDs don't display any text, but I have played several that first display the name of the album and then display the name of each cut. [ Andrew  Oct 06, 2014 ]
There is no connection to a TV, this is simply a CD/DAC player. [ MITCHELL  Oct 06, 2014 ]
