Here at Crutchfield HQ, we have a large room where vendor representatives come to demo new products and provide training. In the front of the room is our "house system," and in that rack of gear you'll find a Marantz receiver. That should tell you something. So if you're looking for better sound in your home theater, rest assured the Marantz SR6009 will deliver. Though designed with an eye (and ears) on sound, this receiver doesn't skimp on features. Whether you're putting together an ambitious home theater with multichannel sound and multi-zone playback, or starting with a simple stereo setup with plans to expand, the SR6009 offers outstanding audio and video performance.
If much of your music listening takes place in the digital domain, you'll be impressed with the SR6009's many digital music features. Built-in Wi-Fi makes it easy to connect to your home network. From there, you can play music wirelessly from networked computers and NAS drives. Apple® users can stream tunes from an iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch®, or a computer running iTunes® with AirPlay. Or, connect your iPod® or iPhone to the front-panel USB port and control it with the receiver's remote.
Android™ users will appreciate Bluetooth connectivity, for wirelessly streaming audio from any app on your device. Spotify® and SiriusXM subscribers can listen to their favorite playlists or stations. Plus, there's built-in support for Pandora® and hundreds of free online radio streams. Into high-resolution music? The SR6009 can play files with sampling rates up to 24-bit/192kHz as well as DSD files.
Take a look at the SR6009's back panel. That's a lot of speaker outputs for a seven-channel receiver. The extra outputs allow you to connect as many as nine speakers. Then you can configure the receiver's amplifier to send music to whichever seven speakers you choose. This gives you some options: enjoy 7.2-channel sound in your home theater, using surround back, front height, or front wide speakers to get the ideal sound for your room. Add speakers to a second room to listen to music while others watch a movie with 5.1-channel sound in the main zone. You can even add a TV to that second room, for watching two different movies or shows from different sources at the same time.
The 4K Ultra HD revolution is here. The SR6009 offers 4K picture quality with your Ultra HD TV and can upscale lower-resolution signals to 4K. This ensures you'll get crisp, clear picture quality with all your video sources. This receiver is not HDCP 2.2-compliant and will not support copy-protected 4K video content.
A feature-packed receiver like the SR6009 is only as good as your ability to set it up and control it. That's another area where this receiver excels. Marantz's setup assistant guides you through all your connections and settings right out of the box. Just connect your TV with an HDMI cable and you'll be ready to get started. Once you're up and running, download the free Marantz Remote app for your Apple or Android device. It's an easy way to control your receiver over Wi-Fi, giving you an intuitive touchscreen interface to change sources, play digital music, and operate key features.
Your receiver powers your speakers and lets you connect and select your entertainment sources. But a great receiver does a lot more it ignites your emotions. From the passion of a favorite musical artist, to the crossfire of a super-charged movie soundtrack, to the intensity and immersion of a fast-paced video game, your receiver is the key to experiencing and enjoying it in full.
I'm using this receiver to power my KEFs Q900 Front / Q600C Center / Q300 Surrounds / Def Tech SC8000. So far the sound is very impressive when it comes to Home Theater 5.1 movies. I do not have two additional speakers to test 7.1, so I am not sure what the performance is like. The One caveat that I've noticed, which most people who purchase these type of systems know, is that type of MP3 encoding matters. I've played CDs, MP3s in 128kbps, 192kbps, and 320kbps , as well as online music. The sound quality ranges from decent at best, to flat out amazing. The type of music also makes a huge difference. Overall I am satisfied with this receiver but I am still breaking in my speakers so I am still waiting to see what this thing is capable of. However, until Marantz fixes the stability issue, I cannot honestly say I would buy another Marantz receiver. I was considering trading this one in for their highest end receiver, but I will most likely consider another brand at this present time.
Pros: Excellent HT sound. Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray sounded amazing on with this receiver. I am still testing several movies with 5.1 sound, so I will update this section in the future. Easy to navigate UI Good music sound performance. Multiple options for media / Bluetooth / IPod / and Apple AirPlay. You can even stream from ITunes on your PC or Windows Media player to this system.
Cons: This receiver is super buggy. I can't count how many times I've had to unplug the receiver to get internet radio streaming to work or even to play music from an iPod/iPhone. It's very frustrating and quite honestly, the reason for my 3 star review. Marantz released a recent firmware to address this, but the receiver still has issues and locks up frequently.
I bought this receiver to replace an aging Lexicon MC-1 and thought the WiFi and HDMI capabilities would be really what I needed. I do, but at a cost of sound quality here. The setup was difficult for a 5.1 system, the receiver needed to have the rear speakers hooked up as the side surrounds to get past the setup. Nothing about this in the manual or on screen help. A few fields to great Crutchfield's tech support and it finally set up. Once all leveled out it was time to listen. There are so few selectable sound processors available that my 1998 MC-1 was better with just Dolby DTS and no video to it! Also one cannot on the fly adjust output levels of the speakers. Program providers will never be the same on their surround mix. It would be nice to have front, center, back, surround, and sub woofer volumes on the remote without having to navigate the initial setup menus. What a pain! I think this one is coming back on the 60 day return guarantee.
Pros: none found yet.
Cons: very bad speaker management, lousy remote, very few surround pre-sets.
It is very difficult to choose an AVR. I had a Onkyo TX-NR709 and the the USB WiFi adapter never worked well, clarity was poor and eventually the HDMI board failed after 2 years service. I emailed Onkyo but no response. I probably should have gotten Crutchfield involved since it came from them but I was ready to move on.
I researched numerous AVR for to find a reliable unit with HDMI 2nd room and digital sound for 2nd room. This unit does it! Zone tow is easily controlled and will play digital music from any source and will also power my 2nd Tv in the kitchen which is always tuned to the same source as the game room. The set up is simple and Audyssey calibration is easy. The WiFi works great and the SR6009 is very clear with good dynamic sound for both movies and stereo. The remote is not universal and only controls the AVR, no TV or DVR player. The remote is straight forward and simple to work. No mystery buttons!
It lacks the sound fields that my Onkyo had but frankly I have not missed them. It is a simple and solid AVR. I had Marantz back in the 80s and I'm happy to be back. I wish I had my old Marantz gear back... Crutchfield answered my questions accurately and quickly about the 6009 and shipping and tracking was excellent, along with their return policy. Why risk buying elsewhere?
Pros: Simple set up and clarity of sound.
Cons: Remote is not multipurpose.
This receiver blows everything else I have owned out of the water. My last two receivers were a Yamaha and Denon and the Denon stopped working after just a few years of moderate use. I have not had luck with the Denon brand and everything seems to fail after the first couple years.
The Marantz SR6009 is an awesome receiver. I have it Bi-Amped to Polk RtiA9's up front and the rest of the system is Polk. The sound is sharp, clear and the sound enveloping during music or movies is incredible. Best separation I have experienced in a similarly priced receiver. The setup was easy but the unit had problem working with my iPod so I reset the unit and it works fine.
The tuner on the internet radio is funky. It says my favorites are full yet I only had one in the Favorites Folder. My work around was to just go on the internet site they provide with your MAC number and set it up remotely from the home computer.
Audyssey setup was totally easy and just plug in the mic and follow the step by step procedures on the TV screen. The result is an expansive sound field. With the discrete circuit technology, the amplifier provides identical quality for all 7 channels(150WX7 channels) and has impressive sound reproduction even at very high levels. Pure sound at all volumes.
I almost gave this review a 4 for the small inconveniences mentioned above but the sound field and quality of this receiver is superb and deserves nothing less than 5 stars. Totally happy!
Pros: Pure, clean sound field at all volume levels. Customized settings are about infinitely adjustable and tunable and actually work as compared to other receivers. Well thought out options for WiFi, iPod and other streaming technology.
Cons: The Internet Radio directions could be clearer on the instruction manual and give us a paper instruction manual instead of just a downloaded version off the internet or the CD. Print a manual!
I found this to be a good surround sound receiver. I was a little disappointed in the remote control. I thought I could use it to control other devices I have. I also was disappointed in that I could not stream movies from my ipad wireless. Still overall I am very happy with my purchase. The salesman was very helpful and not pushy at all.
Pros: Good sound quality. Lots of nice sound features.
Cons: Not a universal remote

7-Channel Discrete Amplifier: The Marantz SR6009 is equipped with a power amplifier that reproduces high-fidelity sound in surround mode with equal quality and power for all channels, true to the original sound. The power amplifier circuit adopts a discrete-circuit configuration that achieves high-quality surround sound reproduction. The 7 channel amplifier is rated at 110 watts with 2 channels driven (20-20kHz, 8-ohms, 0.08% THD).
Amplifier Assignment: The SR6009 supports up to 7.1 channels (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and SW) for surround playback defined by the Blu-ray disc format. The seven amplifier channels built into the receiver are typically used for 7.1 channel surround in the main room, but there are various amplifier configurations to accommodate your home theater setup:
Exclusive HDAM & Current Feedback Technology : Incorporating technology derived from Marantz's Reference Series components, the SR6009 features Marantz's exclusive HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module) system, which combines ultra fast slew rate and maximum dynamic range to deliver optimum sound quality with today's high resolution audio formats. The SR6009 also incorporates Current Feedback instead of the typical voltage feedback configuration. Current Feedback technology provides a wide closed-loop bandwidth and very high slew rate, delivering superior audio fidelity
Multi-Channel Decoding Formats: The Marantz SR6009 AV receiver supports the following multi-channel (Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic) decoding formats.
Note: Dolby Digital and DTS listening modes can only be selected if your audio source is connected to the A/V receiver via a digital audio connection (HDMI, optical, or coaxial). To enjoy true 7.1ch Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD surround sound, the receiver must be connected to your Blu-ray player via HDMI.
Direct Listening Modes: The Marantz SR6009 offers two Direct Listening Modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. Source Direct provides playback of 2ch or Multichannel audio in its original form, without any surround or tone processing. Pure Direct goes a step further by turning off the receiver's display and analog video circuitry to minimize the possibility of any noised being added to the audio signal.
Stereo Modes: The Marantz SR6009 surround receiver also provides two-channel stereo and multi-channel stereo playback, as well a virtual surround from two stereo speakers. The 2CH Stereo mode is for playing in two channel stereo; bass and treble can be adjusted and sound is output from the front left and right speakers, along with a connected subwoofer. Multi-Channel Stereo mode lets you enjoy stereo sound from all speakers. Virtual Speaker mode lets you enjoy surround effects using only the front speakers or headphones.
Audyssey Gold: The Marantz SR6009 features the Audyssey Gold suite of powerful DSP features; including MultEQ XT (PRO), Dynamic Volume, Dynamic EQ, and Audyssey DSX.
Surround Parameters: You can adjust the following surround mode parameters:
Audio Enhancements: The Marantz SR6009 receiver provides various audio enhancements to deliver a high-quality listening experience every time.

Volume Settings: The SR6009 offers the following volume settings.

The second HDMI output is discrete and allows you to enjoy a different audio/video source in another room. The HDMI jacks can accept and switch 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K video signals to a HDTV (depending on input).
Note: The AV receiver's HDMI 2.0 jacks do not support the latest HDCP 2.2 copyright protection for 4K ultra-HD content, so it will not support 4K content from satellite/cable providers, online video services, and Blu-ray disc which are copyright protected with HDCP 2.2.
4K Video Upconversion: The Marantz AV receiver's sophisticated video processor provides upconversion from standard definition (480i/480p) and high definition (720p/1080i/1080p) sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels), which lets you connect all your analog (composite/component) or digital (HDMI) video sources to the SR6009 and then connect to your HDTV with just a single HDMI cable.
HDMI Standby Pass-Through: When the AV receiver is in "Standby" mode and the HDMI Standby Pass-Through function is enabled, both audio/video streams from the receivers HDMI input will be output to your television, via the AV receiver's HDMI monitor output. Once the receiver is turned "On", only video will pass through the monitor output to your TV and the audio is directed to the receiver's speaker outputs.
Analog Video Inputs: The receiver features three composite video inputs and one composite video monitor output; supports up to 480i. There is also two component video inputs (60MHz) and one component video monitor output; supports up to 1080p.
