Our take on the Marantz Reference Series
TT-15S1

by Ralph Graves
Marantz

Marantz visited Crutchfield recently and demonstrated just how fantastic vinyl can sound with their Reference Series TT-15S1 turntable. They simultaneously played an LP and CD of the same music, switching the sound back and forth between the TT-15S1 and the Marantz SA-11S1 disc player. The demonstration showed why audiophiles continue to crave high-quality turntables. This one blew us away, even when compared to a reference disc player costing over $3,000.

The TT-15S1 features a high-density acrylic chassis and platter to provide a low-resonance foundation. A floating mount isolates the motor's vibration from the chassis, and the drive's endless silicon belt ensures the platter rotates at a smooth, constant speed. An included "clever clamp" fits over the spindle and keeps your LP snug against the platter, making it as flat as possible.

The turntable's moving magnet cartridge is mounted in a non-conductive ebony base to minimize any static interference. A magnetic anti-skating mechanism in the tone arm lets you make precise adjustments to keep the stylus tracking properly, so it can reproduce every detail contained in the vinyl.

Specifications

Features

Acrylic Base/Platter: The Marantz TT-15S1 Reference Series turntable features a low-resonance, high-density acrylic chassis and platter. The chassis is 17-5/16" wide x 13-11/16" deep x 3/4" thick. The platter is 11-11/16" in diameter and 1-1/8" thick. The turntable is supported by three solid aluminum feet. The feet are adjustable, so the turntable can be leveled.

Assembly Required: The turntable is packed unassembled in thick foam rubber. The platter, tone arm, and cartridge must all be mounted to the turntable base before use.

Motor: The TT-15S1's non-servo controlled AC motor is float-mounted in the left rear corner of the turntable base. To prevent vibration, the motor actually rests on the table top, and protrudes through a hole in the base. A silicon band completely isolates the motor from the turntable base.

Belt Drive: The turntable features a belt drive system, and comes with 2 endless silicon belts (one is a spare). The pulley, which slips onto the motor shaft, has two grooves with different diameters for the two rotating speeds (33-1/3 rpm and 45 rpm). To change the speed, you must manually move the silicon belt from one groove to the other.

Tone Arm: The TT-15S1 features an anodized aluminum, straight tone arm. The low-coloration tone arm has a magnetic anti-skating mechanism and a fine adjustable counter weight. It also has an attached high quality 39" audio and ground cable. The audio cable has left and right RCA plugs, and the ground cable has a spade connector. The counter weight is used to set the proper height of the tone arm.

Cartridge: This Marantz turntable comes with a 6-gram, high quality ClearAudio Virtuoso ebony wood MM (moving magnet) stereo cartridge and non-replaceable stylus. The cartridge is attached to the tone arm via a fixed mount. Tools for mounting the cartridge to the tone arm are included.

Clever Clamp: The turntable comes with a Clever Clamp record clamp from Souther Engineering. This 65mm diameter plastic disc slides over and grips the spindle, locking and clamping records into place. The upturned edges on the clamp allow for easy removal.

Supplied Accessories: The TT-15S1 comes with the following accessories:

  • Tool Kit: To help you assemble the turntable, the tool kit includes 3 Allen wrenches and a screwdriver.
  • Bearing Oil: A 5 ml bottle of bearing oil is included for regular maintenance of the turntable. It is recommended that you lubricate the bearing of the center shaft every two years.
  • Turntable Sheet: A 1/8" thick felt pad is included if you prefer not to place your records directly on the acrylic platter. A small circular piece of felt is included to assist you in setting the proper tone arm height when the turntable sheet is used.
  • White Cotton Gloves: When changing turntable speeds, it is recommended that you use the white cotton gloves when handling the silicon belt to avoid damaging the belt.

Nice Table...

Written By plainscraps, Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, November 05, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this table as a temprary replacement for my Music Hall 5.1. The Music Hall constantly needs motors replaced due to noise and other issues. The table was received in excellent condition with exceptional packaging! The table was the EASIEST I have ever set up, including the catridge. Even taking my time, from unpackaging to playing a LP was maybe 30 minutes, tops. Excellent cartridge for a "inclusive" one. The arm is simple and very effective. Tracking force was setup initially set according to instructions (course) and "finally" set by a tracking force scale. Recommended was 2.2, mine settled at 2.25 grams. Let it be known, for a 1500.00-1700.00 table, I do not approve of the counter weight design. Clear Audio/Marantz should consider a "true" threaded design with a graduated numeric scale that can be repositioned to "0" when the tone arm is balanced. The pro-ject arm on my 5.1 is set up that way and makes much more sense. After that, I have very few "issues" that are serious in nature, but are more "preferences." I prefer the tone arm cables to be terminated in a RCA junction box so the listener can choose or replace the RCA style cables to their preferences as desire/budget permits. This perspective however, introduces caviats (additional connections/point of failure/soldering etc.). Due to imitations of this editor, the table is quiet, asthetically pleasing and the cartridge/arm combination is a great value. A definite improvement over the Music Hall! Enjoy!
Pros:
Good design (Overall). Quiet, great inclusive cartridge. Sound quality above the set price.
Cons:
Listener Cannot choose the RCA type connection (preference). Motor design is effective yet convoluted in design. Isolated from table but after power switch usage, motor needs the be moved back as to not touch the plinth. Maunufacturers need to rotate/place the power switch 45 or 90 degrees in placement to resolve the switch issue. Other resolutions needed for motor movement issue. A turntable at this price needs a dust cover. Keep the price what it was and ADD a dustover.

Outstanding

Written By Steve M, Chicagoland on Tuesday, October 22, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Most people know this is really made by Clearaudio in Germany. I've owned VPI, ProJect and Rega tables and this one is superior to every one of them in design, construction, fit and most importantly, sound. The cartridge alone costs >$800 and is worth every dollar. My only disappointment is I waited so long and wasted time with the above mentioned 'other' tables.
Pros:
Everything but especially the sound - spectacular.
Cons:
None (although a dust cover would be nice)

Marantz TT-15S1

Written By West County Audiophile, Manchester, MO on Sunday, October 13, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Marantz TT-15S1 is outstanding in both form and function. I was not sure I would find a suitable replacement for my previous turntable that I held in high regard; however, there is no looking back with the Marantz. Well done! My research payed off with this purchase. The reviews on this web page are spot on.
Pros:
My vinyl never sounded better.
Cons:
I had to purchase a cover for the turntable. Considering the quality of the product, I did not consider this an issue.

As good as they say. Exceptional value.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agree with the other reviewers here. I purchased through Crutchfield and had the usual excellent purchase experience. I've had it for about 8 months and I use it a lot.

In a nutshell, if you want a really high-end vinyl playing experience, but don't want to break the bank, this is your turntable. It sounds great (ditch the mat, and use a proper record clamp/weight). The included MM cartridge is a great value. It's a joy to set up (white gloves included). It's really hard-core looking, and people really notice that. Did I mention how good it sounds? Great bass extension and weight, clean and clear midrange nice high-end with out being glaring. A perfect balance. No interest in upgrading the cartridge, just play vinyl, buy vinyl, play vinyl, repeat.

It's a true treat to use. We do vinyl parties where people bring over the old albums they love but can no longer play. People always remark on how beautiful their records sound, with lots of "wow, that really does sound better than digital" and "I remember loving this album, but I don't remember it sounding that amazing." And like that.

Very nicely crafted, a great audio purchase for the "sane" audiophile, if there is such a thing.
Pros:
Great sound, build quality, easy non-fussy setup with included cartridge. Excellent value with included cartridge. Beautiful to look at. Inert and resonance-free. Did I say great sound?
Cons:
Doesn't come with a dust cover. That's a Con, I suppose.

Thrilling Sound at Great Price

Written By Joe, PR, USA on Friday, September 21, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Marantz TT-15S1 turntable shows clarity of sound, astonishing low resonance, stunning appearance and represents a solid investment. Also it is simple; cartridge has to be attached to the tonearm via a fixed mount. That means correct alignment always.

This gem arrived with the acclaimed Clearaudio Virtuoso cartridge which sounds amazing. Audiophile, high end performance at reasonable price. Virtuoso is a close cousin of the legendary Clearaudio Maestro cartridge.

Chances are you will be thrilled by this masterpiece. Even with power switch in off position.

Fantastic Turntable

Written By Gregory, Fishhook, AK on Monday, January 19, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Marantz TT15S1 was designed for Marantz by respected German electronics firm "Clearaudio." My initial impressions of turntables were forged in the '70's (hence the initial "sticker shock," when I initially saw this.) However, a little research on quality turntables quickly dispelled any concerns over the price. In fact, the Marantz TT15S1 represents an excellent value for the cost. It includes a very-high quality, Clearaudio cartridge (MM) that is matched to this particular model (an important consideration which can add significant cost when purchasing a new turntable.) I was easily able to set the TT15S1 up out of the box following the clear set-up instructions. The sound quality is superb breathing new life into my old LP's. This is an excellent value for those wanting to rediscover vinyl; audiophile-grade sound, but not able to spend several thousand dollars.

1 question already asked

I just purchased a Marantz tt-15s1 with the Clearaudio Satisfy tonearm. Setup went fairly well, with the exception of two issues. Namely, I can not get the grounding cable to stay connected to the bottom of the spindle bearing housing. It has a little slot for it, in which I insert the plug. I push as hard as humanly possible, and it just falls out again. I finally, wrapped it around the housing a few time, which provides enough torque for it to stay in place. But if the table is jostled at all it will fall out? Any Ideas? Secondly, When I lower the queuing lever the tonearm shifts slightly to the right. Do any of you with this tonearm know how to adjust the platform for the queuing lever to prevent this? Cheers! Thanks for the help. [ J  Dec 26, 2013 ]

  • I had/have both of these issues setting up my table. My ground cable fell out the first time but has stayed in place since so I cant help you there. My tonearm shifts a few millimeters to the right as well when I lower it but since it is minimal I live with it. Maybe adjusting the ant-skate would help. Enjoy your table! Many systems lack the phono input needed to hook up a turntable. Separate phono preamps not only make it easy to connect to these systems, they also tend to offer better performance than the phono preamp circuitry built into many amps and receivers. See all categories & accessories
