Mirage

Our take on the Mirage MX 5.1

Room-filling sound from compact speakers

Each of the handsome, ultra-compact satellite speakers in the Mirage MX system fits into the palm of your hand, so you can easily place them around your room without cluttering up your décor or taking up a lot of space. Stash the small-but-mighty subwoofer under a table or behind the couch. You'll be amazed by the expansive, true-to-life sound you'll get from these unobtrusive speakers.

Omnipolar technology

Innovative technology for a wide soundstage

Mirage's Omnipolar technology is one of the secrets to this system's smooth, room-filling sound. A saucer-shaped Omniguide mounted above each driver disperses sound evenly in a 360° pattern around your room. This results in a deeper, wider, taller soundstage that transforms your entire listening space into a "sweet spot." You won't have to anchor yourself to one prime seat — you'll experience warm, natural sound throughout the room.

If you've got a six- or seven-channel receiver, add extra MX satellites for even more engaging wraparound sound.

5.1 Home Theater Speaker Package: The Mirage MX 5.1 Home Theater System Speaker Package Includes five palm-size MX speakers and the MM6 compact powered subwoofer cube. This tiny, versatile 5.1 speaker package unobtrusively fits in almost any room. The satellite speakers' and powered subwoofer's compact size offers minimum exposure while delivering big, immersive 360º audio entertainment from any position in your room. Each satellite speaker, as well as the powered subwoofer, features a sleek and stylish high-gloss black cabinet which is magnetically shielded.

Mounting Options

Satellite Speakers

Two-Way Design: A two-way speaker, the MX has a maximum power handling of 100 watts, allowing it to work well with a wide variety of amplifiers. Inside each durable polycarbonate enclosure, you'll find a .625-inch pure titanium hybrid tweeter for warm, rich high frequencies and a 2.5-inch aluminum woofer for substantial, low distortion bass performance.

Drivers: The Mirage MX satellite speakers house a 2-1/2" highly efficient aluminum polypropylene cone woofer with butyl rubber surround and a 5/8" pure titanium hybrid (PTH) dome tweeter mounted on the Omniguide.

Note: Because the drivers are so small, Mirage suggests setting the bass management crossover of your A/V Receiver or processor to120Hz (or as close to 120Hz as possible).

Omniguide: The patented Omniguide module utilizes two deflectors, one each for the tweeter and midrange. The module disperses sound the way the ear and brain are accustomed to receiving it; thirty percent is direct sound, the other seventy percent is reflected off walls, ceilings, floors and other surfaces for a completely immersive, 360º experience.

Omnipolar Technology: By utilizing the natural room reflections this speaker design radiates sound in a 360° pattern, expanding the sweet spot to encompass virtually the entire room.

Palm Size Enclosure: The satellite speakers feature a palm-size, acoustic suspension enclosure made from an ultra rigid polycarbonate with a high-gloss black finish.

Magnetic Grille: The MX satellite speakers feature a removable magnetic black cloth grille.

Speaker Terminals: The satellites feature high-quality spring post speaker terminals for a secure and convenient connection. The spring post terminals are ideally suited for bare wire connection up to 14 gauge. You will need to remove the rubber plug on the bottom of the speaker to access the speaker terminals.

Powered Subwoofer

Dynamic Power: The MM-6's digital amplifier is rated at 800 watts dynamic power. While an RMS power rating indicates power available on a continuous, long-term basis, subwoofers rely on large, short-term peaks of power to support the wide dynamics required by today's digital music formats and movie soundtracks; therefore the dynamic power rating can be used as an indication of a subwoofer's real-world performance.

Passive Radiator Design: The MM-6 has a front firing 6-1/2" anodized aluminum driver and two side firing 6-1/2" anodized aluminum passive radiators. The passive radiator design, combined with the inverted ribbed elliptical surrounds on both the driver and passive radiators, supports lower and louder bass output than is typical from 6-1/2" subwoofer in this size enclosure.

Digital Control: To protect the driver from being overdriven, a proprietary circuit monitors the output signal and adjusts only the portion of the signal that might damage the sub. This allows the subwoofer continue playing and deliver clear bass at all volume levels.

Power Mode: The power mode switch is set to On or Auto; the automatic circuit turns the amplifier on when an audio signal is detected and off after several minutes with no input signal. There is also a master power switch on the back panel.

Volume: Use the rotary volume knob to adjust the subwoofer volume relative to the rest of the system.

Phase: The phase is continually adjustable from 0 to 360 degrees.

Crossover: The crossover is continuously adjustable from 50 Hz to 200 Hz. The crossover can also be bypassed, useful for an LFE signal that's already crossed over.

Note: Because the satellite speakers used in this system are so small, Mirage suggests setting the subwoofer's crossover above 120Hz.

Preamp Level Input: The left and right line-level jacks are used to connect the subwoofer to a pre-amp, signal processor, line-level crossover, or receiver with pre-amp level outputs. Use the left input when connecting to a single LFE output.

WA Port: The WA port on the back panel is labeled for future use.

Mounting Options

Video Shielded: The satellite speakers are magnetically shielded for safe placement near your TV or computer monitor without causing picture interference.

Mounting: The Mirage MX speakers come with an integrated key-hole slot on the rear of the speaker for wall-mounting the speaker. If you mount the satellite speakers more than six feet off the floor, Mirage recommends turning them upside down. The Mirage satellite speakers also feature 3 integrated rubber feet for placing the speaker securely on a shelf or stand. If you place the satellite speakers on a table or shelf, put them as close to the front edge as possible.

Optional Stands: The MX speakers can be mounted on the optional Sanus HTB-7stands (item number 051HTB7) and similar universal speaker stands.

Pretty amazing for their size

I really wanted the Nanos but the size wasn't suitable for the decor according to the wife. So I got these instead and figured I'd have to put my 12" polk sub in there and put the Mirage 's tiny sub back in the box. After installing and watching a movie, at first I thought wow, these little speakers put out a lot of mid range and bass so I turned the volume down on the sub and to my amazement that little sub kicks. As the other reviewer said it won't jar any bones or shake you off the couch but is more than adequate for any type of listening. The speakers are superb. Our room is 16x18 but the stairwell is open to the upstairs so there is no rear wall. Thus the reason I wanted to go with the Mirage speakers, that Omni Polar technology really works. I only have the 3 front ones going at the moment sitting on the mantle and they sound great. I can't wait until I can run the wires in-wall and hookup the surrounds. They are powered by an Onkyo TX-SR608. Do yourself a favor and get a good receiver as that is the braintrust of any sound system. I learned that a few years ago by switching to Onkyo from another lesser brand and the sound was 110% noticibly better with the same older speakers.

Bottom line is if you have an irregular room (or not!), want speaker placement flexibility, great sound from tiny speakers for a small-mid sized room, buy these, you won't be dissapointed! I certainly have been very satisfied with them.

I am honestly overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of sound coming out of these tiny speakers. Far better performance than my venerable acoustic suspension speakers in their 4' high 80-lb. wooden pieces of furniture with 12" woofers. My room is 335 sq. ft. and these speakers are more than adequate to cover that area, with sound spilling out in to the rest of the house and outside into the street. Paired with a 100 watt/channel receiver, there's no chance I could crank up the volume all the way without blowing out my eardrums. I've used them with 5.1 movies and classical CDs. Bass performance from the subwoofer is also astonishing for its size. While I can detect it can't quite pump out bone-jarring volumes at the lowest frequencies, it's plenty adequate for normal listening.

These are supremely crisp and clear, and I couldn't be happier with the sound quality. The 5.1's were selected for the superior subwoofer, compared to the nanosats. (OS-3's surpassed my budget.) I use two in front and two next to the sofa in a medium-sized room. The fifth is my back-up. (It was originally used as my center-channel speaker, but I thought it was a little weak for regular TV dialogue.) I bought a Mirage OS-3 center-channel speaker to complement these, and that did the trick. I highly, highly recommend this Mirage setup.

Perfect for my Living Room

Written By kaybee, Ottawa, Canada on Tuesday, January 03, 2012

I performed a very major update to my AV system over the last couple of weeks and the Mirage MX 5.1 system with the OS3 Centre Channel speaker was a significant portion of that as well as getting a proper AV Receiver (Denon AVR-1712).

I was upgrading my system from a 25+ year old stereo-only amp/pre-amp combo so my video and audio components were not well integrated in the least.

My first Crutchfield support interaction came after placing my order and getting confirmation. At that point I decided I wanted to change the colour of the speaker wire that I had ordered. I quick email to support followed by a confirmation phone call from Crutchfield and my order was changed prior to it being shipped.

As I worked through configuring the system and getting it tuned for the speaker positions and various audio input types, I exchanged a number of emails with Lincoln at Crutchfield. Each one of these emails brought me closer to tuning the system to perfection.

All I can say is - WOW!! In my L shaped living room (dining room opening left front, hallway left real, long glass window with wooden venetian blinds along most of right hand wall) the sound clarity and balance is just phenomenal. The sound-stage encompasses the couch on the back wall of the living room as well as love seat along the left wall beautifully.

Highly, highly recommended with the caveat of the benefits of replacing the centre channel speaker.
Pros:
Easy set-up due to small satellite size and flexibility of positioning provided by Omnipolar. Crutchfield Advisor after-sales support!! Thanks Lincoln!
Cons:
Based on reviewer AndyM's recommendation I also ordered a OS3 Centre Channel speaker as well. In some quick testing using the fifth satellite as the centre instead of the OS3 the difference was night and day. The centre channel is so critical to much TV/movie dialogue that I feel this is a real weakness of the 5.1 package as offered. On the other hand (at least in my room) the sub is perfect!!

Great small system

We built a media room that was 12' x 24'. I prewired the walls for a surround sound system. Since the room was so small, I didn't want to use up floor space with large monitors. The MX 5.1 filled the bill nicely. The only floor space taken up was the area used by the sub-woofer (less than 1 sq. foot). The system sounds equal to my much larger Klipsch system in a different room.
Pros:
Small, great sound.
Cons:
Hard to connect speaker wires
