Our take on the Mirage Nanosat® 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System

Mirage's sleek Nanosat speaker system surrounds you with high-impact home theater sound. Five compact satellites and a subwoofer combine to create gorgeous, full-bodied audio with an impressively big, spacious soundfield. Experience realistic imaging — hear the exact location of an engine rumbling off-screen, or the splash of individual raindrops in an enveloping thunder storm. This system's elegant good looks make it a great addition to any room.

Innovative design for expansive, lifelike sound
The key to the Nanosat system's open, true-to-life sound is Mirage's exclusive Omnipolar® technology. Each speaker disperses sound evenly in a 360° pattern, thanks to the saucer-shaped Omniguide mounted above its drivers. The result: a deeper, wider, taller soundstage that transforms your entire listening space into a "sweet spot." Mirage's approach delivers a combination of direct and reflected sound that's more like what we hear in real life. And you won't have to anchor yourself to one prime seat — you'll experience warm, natural audio throughout the room.

The subwoofer also boasts high-performance innovations. Its patented driver design allows the woofer to move faster and with greater precision, giving you consistently clean, distortion-free bass.

Out-of-the-way placement options
Mirage's Omnipolar design gives you lots of placement flexibility. The tiny satellites can sit comfortably on shelves or tables, or you can mount them on the wall using the included hardware. Because of the way they radiate sound, they're more forgiving than direct-firing speakers. For example, you can place the satellites high up near the ceiling for a cleaner look. Tuck the subwoofer away behind the couch or under an end table to reduce room clutter.

If you have a six- or seven-channel home theater receiver, you can add one or two additional satellites for even more engaging surround sound.

Overview

System Components: The Mirage NanoSat System is a 5.1-channel speaker package, the system includes five identical satellites and a powered subwoofer. The NanoSat satellites are also sold individually, giving you the option of adding additional matching satellites for 6.1 or 7.1 channel surround.

Satellites

Drivers: Each satellite houses a 2-3/4" titanium deposit polypropylene cone midrange with butyl rubber surround and a 3/4" pure titanium hybrid (PTH) dome tweeter mounted on the Omniguide.

OmniPolar Design: Using the Omniguide, NanoSat satellites radiate sound in a 360° pattern. This pattern creates a deeper, more spacious soundstage and a bigger sweet spot in your listening area than a typical direct radiating speaker. When listening to acoustic instruments live, we hear more sound reflected than directly. The Omniguide closely approximates this reflected to direct ratio, giving the NanoSats their large, realistic soundstage.

Enclosure: The satellites have an acoustic suspension, extruded aluminum enclosure.

Mounting: Each satellite comes with a key-hole slot wall mount bracket installed. The bracket is mounted with one screw and can position the speaker right side up or upside down. The brackets mount the speaker approximately 1/4" away from the wall. If you mount the satellites more than six feet off the floor, Mirage recommends turning them upside down. If you place the satellites on a table or shelf, put them as close to the front edge as possible.

Speaker Terminals: The satellites have high-quality binding post speaker terminals for a secure and convenient connection. You will need to remove a plug that's inserted in the center of the binding post if you wish to use single banana plugs, the terminals are too far apart for dual banana plugs. Spade connectors, pin connectors, or bare wire up to 10 gauge can also be used.

Video Shielded: The satellites are magnetically shielded for safe placement near your TV or computer monitor without causing picture interference.

Additional Speakers: If you wish to use the NanoSat System for a 6.1 or 7.1 channel surround system, you can purchase additional satellites (653NANOPB) or an additional center channel speaker (653NANOCTR, same design in a different cabinet) to fill out your speaker requirements.

Subwoofer

Design: The NanoSub is specifically designed for this system and is available only in this package. The crossover point and phase are factory set to match the NanoSat satellites. The down-firing 8 inch sub features a ribbed elliptical surround to eliminate surround distortions and allow greater efficiency. The port is front facing.

Connections: The NanoSub has spring clip speaker level inputs and a mono RCA line-level input. If available, Mirage recommends using the line input with the preamp's crossover set as close to 120 Hz as possible.

Volume: The subwoofer has a separate volume level, allowing you to adjust the subwoofer volume relative to the rest of the system.

Power: The power switch has three positions; on, off, and auto. In the auto position the sub turns on when it senses an audio signal and turns off after approximately five minutes with no signal.

Lots of bang for buck/size

Written By turbo, Long Island, New York on Tuesday, March 17, 2009

Amazing sound if you have crossover function in your receiver. Running full frequency range leaves sound muddy; letting the sub handle the lows and feeding the satellites the highs is necessary to reach full potential. The hemispherical reflector in the mid-range actually does a great job spreading out the sound. You can't review these without mentioning the small size. If you live in an apartment or don't have space these are ideal. Speakers are hefty and well made and sound fine at all volumes. Surround sound is fantastic watching movies and CD's are much clearer. Overall, great speakers for the price/size but do get the subwoofer and use a crossover.

Incredible

Written By Layne, Charleston, SC on Saturday, March 14, 2009

These things are incredible. The amount of clean sound that comes out of something so small is unbelievable. I am still trying to work out the bass module, it is either too much or not enough. That is a problem I don't mind dealing with. I strongly recommend these speakers.

Great Speakers as usual from Klipsh

Written By William, Indianapolis, IN on Sunday, February 15, 2009

These speakers are the perfect balance of size and function. There is not a single spot in my theater room where they sound out of balance. At the clearance price, there isn't a better deal on the market....

Excellent speakers!

Written By Aslam, Chicago, IL on Monday, February 02, 2009

I purchased these speakers from Crutchfield and set them up with my Onkyo 606. This is my first home theater surround sound system.

Out of the box, the speakers feel solid and look very nice. The grills are magnetically attached and very easy to take off, but won't fall off. The binding posts are great and setup was easy.

The speakers have a small footprint and blend in well. I have the sub hidden behind the TV, but it has a cool blue light on it that looks nice, so leaving it out wouldn't be a problem.

I watched Jurassic Park and was blown away! I don't have any problem hearing the voices even at low volume, and the bass is plenty for my 16x20 ft condo room. (I actually almost knocked a mirror of MY NEIGHBORS wall, on the other side of their condo!) I had to dial down the subwoofer.

The mirage omnipolar technology causes a wide soundfield. I can listen from anywhere in the family room and here the same sound. Not like other speaker systems where if you move out of the center listening position you sacrifice sound. Sound fills the whole room and its not obvious which sounds are coming from what speaker, which I love. The downside is that you can't pinpoint exactly where something is.

I was also looking at other systems, but after reading review after review I decided to save a few $100 and get these. I am not disappointed and hopefully will be using these for a long time.

Nice starter surround sound

Written By galip, FL on Thursday, January 22, 2009

Quality speakers. 5 identical mini's, 1 for center channel which is somehow weak but does the job.

Subwoofer is ok for a small room, so if you want a deep whoof this is not for you.

Perfect for our Mini-Home Theater!

Written By kateyandsarahsdad, Alameda, CA on Monday, December 29, 2008

I finally got my Nanosats installed and hooked up with my Onkyo 705 to complete the home theater in our family room and I have to say I am very pleased that they do a very efficient job in filling up and balancing out the room with surround sound for our viewing and listen pleasure. There's still some minor fine-tuning needed but I can tell I made the right choice both in picking these speakers and buying them from Crutchfield's!!! Offering the best prices combined with top of the line service, I am proud to say 99.9% of my home theater pieces are from Crutchfield........and when the time comes, I'll definitely be back for MORE!!!

Superb Quality for the Price

Written By Nathan, Austin, TX on Tuesday, December 23, 2008

I received this system from Crutchfield yesterday and immediately set it up. I am using a mid-level Sony Receiver (85 watts per channel) to drive this surround sound system in my living room. Initially, I only hooked up the fronts, center and sub since we will soon be rearranging the room. First, I was immediately impressed with the design and manufacturing quality. They are not cheapo poorly constructed Bose satellites but rather, heavy rushed aluminum with nice binding posts. They have some weight to them and feel solid when held. The free stands went together easily. I did not find feeding the wire through them as bad as previously suggested by other reviews. Simply tilt them horizontally with the hole facing downward, feed the wire through one hole until gravity pops it out the opposite hole. It only took a few attempts. Upon firing the system up (featuring Batman - The Dark Knight), I was extremely impressed with the sound quality and balance. Nice pin-drop highs and transitions to the low frequencies. The sub is really nice. It is not the earth-shattering growls you will get from a 200-watt 10" powered sub; but that type of sub will cost you as much as this entire system. I love low end sound (12 in. JL in my trunk) and this sub is plenty sufficient for my theater application. I highly recommend this to all my friends.

Excellent Value

Written By John, Bear, DE on Sunday, December 21, 2008

I'd picked this set up to fit in with with the decor of our newly remodeled
den with the requirements of a small footprint and good sound at normal
listening levels for everyday use. The Nanosats have exceeded my
expectations of a small system, and coupled with my Onkyo 606, has
performed flawlessly with music, TV and DVDs. The stands that came free
with the set really look nice and put the rear surrounds at exactly ear level.

I have the mirage system with a Denon receiver. The surround sound is
amazing. This system is exactly what I want for the money. I might replace
the subwoofer later on but otherwise a great start.
