About the Mirage OMD-28
A speaker that disappears
A speaker that disappears
The best speakers are always the ones that make you forget you're listening to a speaker. They simply disappear and leave only a direct emotional connection between you, your favorite artist, and the music that you love. That's the magic of Mirage's top-of-the-line OMD–28. This sophisticated tower speaker will thrill you with its ability to create incredibly lifelike sound with an exceptionally wide soundstage, accurate imaging, and extraordinary depth. Its sound is well-balanced and natural, with deep, precise bass and smooth, detailed highs. The OMD-28's sculpted, hand-built cabinet is complemented by a mirror-like high gloss finish, for a look that is as striking as its sound.
Innovative technology for exceptionally open, lifelike sound
The key to this speaker's expansive, true-to-life sound is Mirage's exclusive Omnipolar® technology. Thanks to the saucer-shaped Omniguide positioned above its top-mounted midrange and tweeter, the OMD-28 can disperse sound evenly in a 360° pattern. The result: an immersive soundstage that transforms your entire listening space into a "sweet spot."
Mirage's approach delivers a combination of direct and reflected sound that's more like what we hear in real life. It gives you easier, more flexible placement options too. You won't have to anchor yourself to one primary seat — you'll experience warm, natural sound throughout the room.

Features
Overview: The Mirage OMD-28 is a tower speaker that uses sophisticated driver technology, Mirage's exclusive OMNIPOLAR technology, and elegant cabinet design to make the speaker ideal for the listener who has floor space for a full-range tower speaker. The speaker is available in a Gloss Rosewood and Gloss Black finish.
Applications: The OMD-28 is a versatile tower speaker because it is full-range and can be used as a front main or surround speaker. You can use this speaker to help create a complete home theater speaker system or a dedicated 2-channel stereo setup.
Voice Matching: This speaker can be matched up with Mirage's OMD-C1 or OMD-C2 center channel, Mirage's OMD-15 floor standing speakers, Mirage's OMD-5 bookshelf/satellite speakers, and Mirage's OMD-R rear surround speakers to create a home theater speaker system.
OMNIPOLAR Technology: This technology radiates sound in a perfectly spherical dispersion pattern, expanding the sweet spot to encompass virtually the entire room. OMNIPOLAR technology uses natural room reflections to create a greater sense of realism. This is accomplished by recreating the same ratio of direct to reflected sound (70% reflected/30% direct) that is typically found in performance spaces. A conventional speaker only produces 30% reflected sound. It is the additional reflected sound provided by a Mirage Omnipolar speaker that creates a three-dimensional sound experience in your home.
Drivers: The drivers used in the OMD-28 are as follows and are separated into two cabinets (one sealed cabinet and one ported cabinet):
- Sealed Top Section:
- Tweeter: Floating above the midbass is a precisely angled cast aluminum OMNIGUIDE module that houses the speaker's proprietary 1.1" titanium dome tweeter.
- Midbass: The speaker features a 5.25" multi-layer carbon fiber/fiberglass hybrid cone midrange driver located on top of the cabinet.
- Ported Bottom Section:
- Woofer: The speaker features two 8" multi-layer carbon fiber cone woofers with a ribbed elliptical rubber surround mounted in the front of the cabinet.
Enclosure: The cabinet is made of very solid inert medium density fiberboard (MDF) which creates a solid, flex-free cabinet which eliminates music altering distortion. The enclosure is divided into two sections. The enclosure uses a sealed section at the top of the cabinet for the Tweeter and Midbass driver to provide clean and accurate reproduction of high and midrange frequencies. The bottom half of the cabinet uses a down firing port design (dual ports) used to help the front-firing woofers produce louder, lower frequencies.
Speaker Terminals: The OM Design Series tower loudspeaker features high quality gold plated binding post connectors that will accept a variety of connector types including bare wire, spade lugs, banana plugs (single only), or pin type connectors. The OMD-28 is equipped with 3 sets of binding posts which allows the speakers to be tri-wired/tri-amped, bi-wired/bi-amped, or traditionally connected to your amplifier. The tweeter's terminals are on top, the midrange driver's terminals are in the middle, and the woofer's terminals are at the bottom. Gold plated shorting straps are factory pre-installed, one strap to connect the three negative and one strap to connect the three positive terminals.
Spiked Isolation Feet: The Mirage OMD-28 includes four machined aluminum spiked feet which provide secure placement and helps to tighten the loudspeakers bass response. The four spiked feet screw into the bottom of the speaker and can be adjusted to level the tower speaker with your floor.
Placement: For best stereo imaging, the left and right speakers should be the same distance from their respective sidewalls. If the distance from one speaker to the listener is very different from the other it can affect the soundstage or stereo imaging. Therefore, the ideal position is having the speakers equidistant to the listener. When choosing the position for your new speakers, try to avoid walls with predominately glass surfaces, as they might not be the best choice for placement. If it is unavoidable to position the OMD-28s close to a glass wall or a large window, it may result in a hard sound with too much reflected information.
Break-In Period: It is vital that the OMD-R speaker be allowed to break-in properly before you perform any precise set up procedures, system adjustments, and before you play it at higher volume levels. The best method of performing the break-in is to play a full range musical passage at a moderate level as long as possible. Utilizing the repeat function on your CD or DVD player can assist greatly. Optimum sound will not be achieved until approximately 100 hours of playing time. After break-in, the volume level can be increased. Do not play the speaker at high levels until the break-in process has been completed. The drivers need to "loosen up:, and until this occurs, damage can result to the drivers.
